Week beginning 16.09.19

This week our focus has been on preparing for and practising our class assembly – we are really looking forward to showcasing our learning! The class assembly is on Friday 27th September at 9.15am. The children are welcome to come dressed as a Roald Dahl character for assembly. This could be as simple as having a gold ticket with them to be Charlie.

In Maths this week we have been looking at another addition strategy – the make 10 strategy. We have been focusing on showing our thinking as well.

In reading this week we have been working on summarising as a reading skill. We have been asking and answering questions to identify the characters and setting. To help us think about what happens in the story we organised events into the beginning, middle and end. We loved doing this with a chapter of The BFG because we got to act out the main events.

In spelling we have been looking at the ‘ng’ and ‘nk’ sounds at the ends of words. We have been exploring our spelling words in a number of active ways throughout the week.

In P.E. we have been improving our control and speed in hockey. We particularly enjoyed having a go at playing a hockey game but found that our next steps needs to be a focus on passing accurately.

We took our French learning outside this week and were busy practising our numbers by finding a collection of objects as well as finding creative ways to write the number Miss Collyns said.

Home Learning

Maths – if you are interested in the make 10 strategy then have a look at this video (excuse the American accent). Topmarks is always a good website to be supporting maths learning, in particular this page on addition and subtraction games.

Literacy – in class we will be focusing on summarising as a reading skill. Some examples of discussions that could be used to support this at home are:

  • Can you retell the text in your own words?
  • What are the most important events or ideas in this text?
  • What order did the events happen in?
  • If you were to write a review of this text, what would you say?
  • What is the main point of this text?
  • What key words would you write down to help you summarise this text?

Enjoy the sunshine this weekend!
