P4J Jumping Jigglypuffs w/c 30.9.19

Another busy week in P4J!

Please bring your Learning Stories back to class next week.

We would also like to request glass jars from home to help us with a science experiment for our topic – weather in Scotland. Thank you!

Maths and Numeracy

We have been applying our skills for rounding whole numbers this week. We have been using our rounding skills to estimate the answers to calculations, using subtraction and addition. Next week, we will continue to practice this skill and revise our knowledge and skills from place value, rounding and estimating.

We have been practising and applying our skills for chance and probability with Miss Houliston. We can use these skills to say how likely an event is to happen. Our next maths topic will be looking at symmetry.

We have been learning quick and accurate recall of addition facts and 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

Literacy

We have been learning about Modal Verbs with Miss Houliston such as will, would, could and should.

We have been looking at our class novel Storm, to identify ‘powerful verbs’. We discussed that a verb is a ‘doing’ word and we highlighted verbs from Storm which were very powerful to the reader. We then wrote our own sentences using powerful verbs to apply our knowledge. We wrote some super sentences!

Spelling Words

We have been learning to add the ‘ed’ suffix to a root word.

Spicy – helped , thanked, jumped, haunted, enjoyed, planted, painted, wanted, reached, granted

Hot – murdered, explained, haunted, gasped, fainted, stranded, clamped, tramped, happened, received

Tricky words – people, water.

Health and Wellbeing

In P.E, we have been applying all of our dodging, coordination, teamwork, throwing and catching skills to play 3 v 3 tag rugby games. We have really enjoyed playing together and have demonstrated some excellent teamwork! We will finish our learning about tag rugby skills next week.

As part of our whole school resilience programme, we have been discussing what we are grateful for. In our classroom, we have an ‘appreciation station’ where we can write down what we are grateful for, throughout our day.

IDL

This week, we have been discussing weather in Scotland. As a class, we have been discussing what we know about weather, what we would like to find out about weather, and how we can find out about it.

Mrs Ritchie gave a fantastic talk to P4J and P4W about weather and the water cycle and we had lots of questions. We will be investigating weather and the water cycle in the coming weeks.

Home learning:

  • Practise adding multiples of 10 together. e.g. 40 + 10, 60 + 30, etc.
  • Try this game to practise rounding to the nearest 10 and 100: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/rocket-rounding  You can also practice counting in multiples of 10 and 100.
  • Try this game to practise chance and probability skills: http://www.scootle.edu.au/ec/viewing/L118/index.html#
  • Practise your spelling words using your favourite coloured pens.
  • Read your set reading books and traffic light your reading record sheets. Write down any tricky words to share with your reading group next week.

Have a lovely weekend!
