P5 Learning Grid WB 21.04.20

Mental maths

I have set a new challenge on SUMDOG for you, it is all about fractions. which we are beginning next week. This will hopefully help you remember some of the learning from P4. Fractions are linked to division – for example If I ask you to work out 1/3 of 27. The calculation would be 27/3 which is = 9.

We are going to work on our understanding of time today. Specifically reading calendars.

Learning Intention

We are learning to read and interpret calendars

I have included a link below for a game that will help you with your understanding.

Once you have clicked on the link there are two different levels of challenge.

  • If you need to work on finding information from a calendar you should choose option 1.
  • If you feel confident about this already then Choose option 3 to answer harder problems.

I have attached the work below I would like you to complete today, please choose a level, 1 star would be super, 2 stars fantastic and 3 stars spectacular. The answers are at the end so you could assess your own work when your finished.

calendar 2020

You will need to use a calendar to work out the answers. I have attached an online version of a 2020 calendar below.

Grammar and writing

Learning Intention

We are learning to use imperative (bossy) verbs

(Remember a verb is a doing word)

It is so hard to find things that are fun to fill Elijah’s day at home, so we have been trying to get him to help in the kitchen whilst Luna plays in her pretend one, ha ha! I have been showing him how to make healthy muffins, sandwiches and pancakes. I would imagine, with all of you being at home just now, your parents are trying to get you to help in the kitchen too.

Your writing task this week is to create a set of instructions in the style of a recipe. I will give you more information on this tomorrow. Today we will focus on the skills that we need to do this piece of writing to a high standard.

Watch this video using the link below. Stefan demonstrates the process of instruction writing. He talks through the key features of this style of writing.  These will be our Success Criteria tomorrow.

  • Chronological order.
  • Simple precise language.
  • Imperative (bossy) verbs

Click on the link below. There is a short video and underneath it there is an activity where you are asked to highlight the imperative verbs.

Now complete the worksheet I have attached. This will further develop your understanding of ‘bossy’ verbs. There are three worksheets to choose from. At the bottom left hand corner of each sheet you can see how many stars there are.

*=Super **=Fantastic ***=Spectacular

Choose which one to complete, or if you have time you could do more than one.

Imperative Verbs Worksheets

ERIC Reading

Please remember it is also important to try to spend time each day completing silent reading on a book of your choice. Try to aim for a minimum of 30 minutes.

There are also stories on audible which are free to listen to, they have lots of great titles.

This is another website where you can enjoy listening to stories being read.

Please carry on practising your spelling using the document below.

Learning Intention

We are learning to spell a set of words accurately using different activities

Word of the Day – “velvety”

Remember to copy the word into the back page of your jotter, then find and record the definition.

Task:  Write a paragraph using the sentence starter below

Some people said that Oz’s velvety voice had special powers…

Hope you have a good first day back and remember to check back tomorrow.
