Learning Together At Home Friday 24.4.20

Hi Everyone

Happy Friday-hope you and your families are all well. It looks like it is going to be a sunny weekend so I hope you really enjoy your outdoor time.

Here are today’s activities :


We have been thinking about how we can display and understand information. We have looked at block graphs, pictographs, venn diagrams and bar graphs.

Today we are going to learn about Carroll diagrams. A Carroll diagram is a four square diagram used to sort objects or numbers. The diagram is named after Lewis Carroll, the author of Alice in Wonderland. He was a mathematician who worked at Oxford university and he invented the Carroll diagram.

Look at the Carroll diagram below, it is showing shapes which have been sorted into four boxes. Each box has to follow two criteria or rules : pink shapes with curved lines, pink shapes with straight lines, blue shapes with curved lines, blue shapes with straight lines.


The next Carroll diagram involves sorting numbers:

even numbers in the 5x table

odd numbers in the 5x table

even numbers not in the 5x table

odd numbers not in the 5x table

It is a good idea to deal with one number at a time. For example: look at the number 10 and then go through each of criteria to work out which box it should go in, then cross off number 10 from the list, do the same for the next number and so on.

Copy out this blank diagram using a ruler. Put the following numbers in the correct boxes : 15  10  25  12  6  7  9  20


When you have finished your Carroll diagram should look like this :


Can you add some numbers of your own? Think of other numbers in the 5 times table and decide which box they should go in.

Make up your own Carroll diagram. You could use numbers from another table, animals, shapes, or anything else you would like to sort.



Friday is still dictation day so draw a line under your last piece of writing or take a new page. Write the heading and date as neatly as you can. Ask someone at home to read your sentences out to you so that you can write them down.

They heard the deafening planes overhead every day no matter what the weather.


She had a loaf of bread every day for her health.

He had a very sore head but still read his book.



The Lost Key by Roderick Hunt

Read pages 17 to 32

When the children get the key back they are very worried that the magic will no longer work because so many things have happened to it. Look at the picture on page 27. Kipper is trying to  make the key work by telling it the adventures he would like to have.

If you had a magic key, what adventure would you like to  have? Draw a picture on a blank page in your jotter. Write a sentence underneath explaining what is happening in your adventure.


Kipper’s Laces by Roderick Hunt

Read through your book with someone at home. Practise any words you are finding tricky.

Talk about these questions with someone at home, they are about the pages 9 to the end of the book.

How did Dad help Kipper?

Was Kipper able to tie his laces straight away? What did he have to do ?

What happened to Kipper at the end of the book.

Can you think of something you have had to practise and practise before you got it right?

Draw a picture of yourself practising this skill or activity.


William’s Mistake by Adam Coleman

Read pages 17 to the end of the book.

Think about the story you have just read. Write a ‘blurb’ for the back of the book summarising the story in a few sentences. Try to make the story sound fun and exciting so that someone would want to read the whole book.

Cool Clive by Michaela Morgan

Read chapter 4, the final chapter.

Talk about the following questions with someone at home:

Did you enjoy the book- give a reason for your answer.

Do you think that the ending was realistic?

Do you think that it is important to have ‘cool’ clothes?

How did Clive feel when he got his new clothes and trainers?

Why did Clive have to wait until it was mum’s day off to go and visit the man?

The book is called ‘Cool Clive’. Can you think of your own story where the character has an adjective which describes them? For example : Acrobatic Amy, Sad Sam, Happy Holly………

Draw the front cover of your book, make sure the title is clear and attractive. Add your own name as the author.


Midge and the Eggs by Roderick Hunt

Read the pages 13 to the end of the book. Practise any words you are finding tricky.

Talk about these questions with someone at home.

Why does Midge keep losing the eggs?

How do you think Midge’s mum feels?

What happens to the eggs at the end of the story?

Copy these sentences out and fill in the missing word. Take a new line for every sentence. Remember to write the title of the book and the date at the top of the page.

Read chapters four and five for Monday 27 April, ‘Catty paddle’ and ‘The wettest way’.

There is quite a lot of challenging vocabulary in this book. If you come across a word which is unfamiliar to you, can you guess its meaning from the rest of the sentence or the illustration if there is one? If you can’t, use a dictionary to find out its meaning or ask someone at home.

Can you think of a way Suzy could get home to France? If you were going to write about it what would you call the chapter?
