Modern Languages week 1 Second Level

Remember its Well being Wednesday, please see the news feed on the website for further details.

Numeracy

Mental maths

Learning Intention

We are learning to estimate how long a task will take

Your task is to create a 10 minute exercise programme which you could do at home. The programme should include short rest times!

Try to use your estimating skills. For example, if you plan to do star jumps for 1 minute try to estimate how many you can do in that time.

Time

Learning intention

We are learning to read and convert times using the 12 and 24 hour format.

We are going to work in more detail on the 24 hour clock, this will help us when it comes to working out intervals or duration’s of time tomorrow. I have taken a photo of the questions I would like you to complete. Remember to traffic light your work when you finish with how confident you feel and then ask an adult to assess your work and traffic light again and see if your assessment matches.

Have a look at the explanation below to remind yourself how to convert the time.

Writing

Your writing task this week is to create an advert which will use the features of persuasive language. I will give you more information on this tomorrow. Today we will focus on the skills that we will require to do this piece of writing to a high standard.

I have uploaded a powerpoint called, what good adverts need to our team, it is in the resources literacy folder. I want you to spend time today reading this for understanding as we will be using these features as part of our success criteria. You will see throughout the powerpoint there are tasks and questions for you to answer.

You will notice from the PP that one of the features effective adverts use are bossy verbs which is something we worked on last week.

To finish today as a little practice could you pick 3 of the features of persuasion from the PP and use them to advertise this car.

Could you perhaps give it a celebrity endorsement or describe its special features?

Reading groups

Below is your reading for the week, you could read it with your parents and they could use the blooms questions that were in your pack. I would use the understanding questions today.

SPELLING P5 WEEK 25

Learning Intention

We are learning to spell a set of words accurately using different activities

Word of the Day – “Whimper”

Remember to copy the word into the back page of your jotter, then find and record the definition.

Task:  Write a paragraph using the sentence starter below

Sarah cradled her injured arm and whimpered softly…

Drama

Here is a drama activity to brighten up your Wednesday (if you have any younger siblings you may wish to lead these games, if not then try to play them with someone else at home):

Fortunately – Unfortunately

This can be played with 2 or more people (although an odd number works particularly well as the sentence starter changes each time).

*        Gather your players in a circle. Discuss the meaning of the words ‘fortunately’         and ‘unfortunately’.

*        Choose someone to to start with a story opener of their own e.g. ‘Once upon a         time there was a dragon that lived in a cave’ or ‘There once was a lonely green       alien on planet Zog….’

*        The next player then has to follow on the story with a sentence starting with           ‘Fortunately…….’

*        The next player follows the story with a sentence starting with ‘Unfortunately……’ and so on.

*        Continue until the ideas run dry and then begin again with a new opening line.

*        You could develop this game by each player adding actions or funny voices as           you play.

Hope you have a fun day and remember to check back tomorrow.
