Learning Together At Home P3M Thursday 14.5.20

Hello everybody

I hope you are all well and that you enjoyed some of yesterday’s circus skills activities. Here are your learning activities for today:

LITERACY

SPELLING

Complete an activity from the spelling grid to help you learn your new words. Dictations tomorrow as usual.

READING

We spent some time at school learning about the author and illustrator Quentin Blake. We found out a little bit about his life and created our own character in the style of his drawing. Some of you chose to do your artist talk about him.

Quentin Blake has a new book out called ‘The Weed’. He was inspired to write this book when he saw a tiny weed growing in a crack between the pavement and the bottom of the garden railings. Each day he passed it, the weed got a little bit bigger.

I would like you to read the following  information  and answer the questions. There are three levels of difficulty, please choose the passage you are able to read and understand. You may want to challenge yourself and that is great,  but read through the information and questions first so you can make a decision.

This piece of work is going to be your first assignment on Teams. When you have completed your questions, take a photograph of your work. Instructions on how to put this into the assignments tab on Teams will follow shortly. You have until Friday 22 May to complete this task.

When you are answering the questions, please remember to take a new page in your jotter, write a title and the date. Take a new line for every question and remember to write in sentences with a capital letter at the start and a full stop at the end.

Quentin Blake is an author and illustrator, he has written a new book called ‘The Weed’.

The story is set in the future. The world is hard and dry.  A large crack opens up in the ground. There is a family stuck at the bottom of the crack and they can’t get out. They are called the Meadowsweet family and they have a pet mynah  bird called Octavia. Octavia flies to the surface and returns with a seed which she drops into a tiny crack in the rock floor. A green shoot appears, then leaves, branches and  green fruit. As the weed gets taller, the family starts climbing. Then the weed  bursts above the surface and the Meadowsweets are thrown to the ground with green leaves growing all around them.

Try to read the information above, ask someone at home to help you with any words you are not sure about. Answer the following questions , writing the answers in sentences if you are able.

What is an illustrator? ( An illustrator is someone who…….)

What is the title of  Quentin Blake’s new book? ( The title of Quentin Blake’s new book is….)

The book is about the Meadowsweet family, where are they living? ( The Meadowsweet family are living…….)

They have a pet Mynah bird, what is her name? ( The bird’s name is……..)

How do the family get out of the crack? ( The family get out of the crack by………)

The weed has green fruit growing on it. Draw a picture of what you think the fruit would look like or design your own green fruit. Think about the size, shape and colour of your fruit.

MAGICAL

Quentin Blake is an author and illustrator. He is not sure how many books he has illustrated but he thinks it is more than 400. Although he is 87, he still draws every day. For 40 years he drew standing up,  but his feet started to hurt,  so now he draws sitting down.

He has a new book out called ‘ The Weed’

The story is set in the future where the world is hard and dry and difficult to live in. A large crack opens up in the ground. There is a family stuck at the bottom of the crack wondering how to get out. They are called the Meadowsweet family and they have a pet mynah  bird called Octavia. Octavia flies to the surface and returns with a seed which she drops into a tiny crack in the rock floor. A green shoot appears, followed by leaves, branches and edible green fruit. As the weed gets taller, the family starts climbing. Eventually, it bursts above the surface and the Meadowsweets are flung to the ground with greenery sprouting all around them.

Answer the following questions in your jotter:

Why do you think Quentin Blake is not sure how many books he has illustrated?

Why does Quentin Blake now have to sit down to draw?

In his new book, what is the future like?

Where do the Meadowsweet family live?

What does Octavia return with and what does she do with it?

When the weed starts growing what do the family do?

What do you think the word -edible – means? Try to guess what it means from carefully reading the rest of the sentence.

What does the word ‘sprouting’ mean?

The family  have a mynah bird as a pet, Quentin Blake enjoys drawing birds and they feature in many of his stories and drawings. Design your own illustration of a bird. It can be as colourful as you would like to make it. Think about what the feathers, wings and beak would look like.

AMAZING

Quentin Blake is an author and illustrator. He became famous for illustrating the stories of Roald Dahl.  Roald Dahl sent him a pair of sandals in the post and said he would like him to draw the BFG wearing them! He drew the illustrations for  David Walliams’s  Mr Stink and The Boy in the Dress. He has drawn murals for hospitals in London, Sheffield and France and you can buy Quentin Blake wallpaper, mugs, fridge magnets, greeting cards and tea towels. He is not sure how many books he has illustrated but thinks it’s more than 400.

He is now 87 years old and still draws every day. He draws in bed and when he’s sitting on the sofa. For 40 years he drew standing up but his feet started to hurt so his doctor suggested that he should sit down! He says it feels strange to him to draw sitting down but enjoys drawing while lying in bed. He finds drawing cars and buildings difficult but always enjoys drawing birds. He doesn’t think too hard about what he is going to draw, he just gets on with it. He says he is a fast worker.

He is working on drawings to go with a book of poems written by Michael Rosen. It is called ‘On the Move’ and is about people and families having to leave their homes and travel to other places.

Quentin Blake also writes books of his own.  He has just published a brand new book called ‘The Weed’.

The story is set in the future where the world is hard and dry and difficult to live in. A large crack opens up in the ground. There is a family stuck at the bottom of the crack wondering how to get out. They are called the Meadowsweet family and they have a pet mynah  bird called Octavia. As the weed gets taller, the family starts climbing. Eventually, it bursts above the surface and the Meadowsweets are flung to the ground with greenery sprouting all around them.

Answer the following questions in your jotter:

How did Quentin Blake become famous?

What does Quentin Blake find difficult to draw?

why do you think Quentin Blake draws quickly without thinking too hard about what he is going to draw?

Look at the photograph of Quentin Blake. People have said that he looks like one of his characters. Why do you think this is? (look at the shape of his face and nose, look at his hair) Start your sentence – I think that Quentin Blake looks like one of his characters because……………

He is working on a book of Michael Rosen’s poems, what are the poems about?

After reading the summary of his new book ‘The Weed’, would you be interested in reading the book? Give a reason for your answer.

In his new book the Meadowsweet family are stuck at the bottom of a hole. How did this happen?

Find out the meaning of the following words and write their definitions in your jotter:

mural

edible

sprouting

Can you find out the word which means the movement of people from one place to another?

As they are climbing, the family eat some of the fruit on their way up. The fruit tastes different to each member of the family. It tastes like peaches to Mr Meadowsweet and pomegranates to Mrs Meadowsweet. Design your own green fruit, think about size, shape and colour and whether it is smooth or rough. Write a sentence beside it explaining what your fruit tastes like.

ART ACTIVITY

Look at Quentin Blake’s drawing from his new book ‘The Weed’. He has drawn members of the Meadowsweet family using the branches to climb out of the crack. He has used different shades of green to illustrate the plant and his drawing is outlined in black. Have a look in your garden or when you are out your walk, look at all the different shades of green there are in nature. Right now is a great time to see different colours because it is spring and many trees, bushes and plants are coming in to bloom. You can see leaves unfurling and new life on many plants. Can you spot any weeds? A weed is a wild plant. Some people hate weeds and pull them out as soon as they see them in their garden but some people think they are just plants growing in the wrong place. Many weeds are very pretty and have colourful leaves and flowers. Quentin Blake was inspired to write his book when he saw a weed growing. Can you spot any weeds growing in strange places, for example, out of walls, through cracks in pavements?

Have a go at drawing a plant in the style of Quentin Blake, use what you have available in the house : pens, paints, crayons, coloured pencils. Look carefully at the different shapes of leaves on the plants which are around you. You could take a notebook into your garden or out on your walk to sketch the different leaf shapes. Think about using different shades of green if you can, you could try mixing colours together for this.  Try to outline your drawing with a black pen or pencil. Maybe you could add some green fruit?
