This week, we will be revising the digraph sounds: ai/ay, ee/ea, igh/-y, oa/ow.  We will also be revisiting shape and numeracy skills (counting forwards and backwards).

Be Geraldine

Be Geraldine, have a look around your house and see if there are any words featuring the ai /ay sound.


Our priority is for children to be able to use the digraphs ai/ay  appropriately (letter/sound correspondence, segmenting, word building, blending).

Our task today is to read and sort words with ai/ay. You can choose one of these tasks:

Mild: Circle the word ai ay circle the word

Spicy: Cut, paste on the right box ai ay worksheet cut and paste

Hot: read and write on the right box. ai and ay sort with sentences

Tricky words

Please revise Block 1, 2 and 3 as well as the First 100 Fry words. Take your time, every child is at a different stage. Follow your child’s lead. Don’t rush, it is better to have few secured than all not consolidated.

  • Please continue to use the tricky word power points.
  • Challenge: If your child can read all of the words quickly and confidently test how well they can independently spell the tricky word when you read them out loud (just like dictation). Continue to practice your 100 fry words.



Prediction skills:  Look at the cover at the book and then looking only at the pictures in the book could you predict: What is going to happen in your story?

Learning Intention

I enjoy investigating objects and shapes and can sort, describe and be creative with them

Success Criteria

  • I can recognise, describe and sort common 2D shapes and 3D objects according to various criteria, for example, straight, round, flat and curved.


We are aware that we have done shape recently but we thought it would be good to do a final review before the end of term.

Warm up:

Ask your child what she/he knows about shapes. This will give you an idea of their knowledge in this area.

  1. Now it’s time for you to go on a hunt around your house or garden to see what shapes you can find. You could also ask these questions:
  • Which shape do you like best?
  • Which are interesting shapes?
  • Do any shapes remind you of something else?
  • Why do you think an object has the particular shape it does?
  • Which is the most common 2D shape you can see?
  • Do hexagons and pentagons exist in your house/outside?
  • Is it possible to find regular shapes, such as squares or circles, in natural features and objects?
  1. Play Shifting shapes. Move the torch to guess the name of the hidden shape and then click the ‘eye’ to see if you were right.
