P1 Lions Reflective Friday 21.8.20

Welcome to the Primary 1 Lion’s blog!

The P1 Lion’s have had a fantastic week in Primary 1! We have had lots of fun playing and exploring in the classroom and playground, building on daily routines and making lots of new friends.

The P1 team would like to remind parents to provide children with a small filling snack, big enough a to last the P1s until lunch time. We only have a short time for snack and outdoor play, so one item is plenty for the children. Also, please could you provide your child with a lunch that doesn’t take too long to eat. We only have 45 minutes for lunch and the children love to play outdoors after eating. Some children are having less time to play outdoors due to taking too long to eat. We would also like to remind you to please label all items your child brings into school with their name. This will help ensure nothing goes missing at school.

The P1’s also received a very exciting present from the Fairmilehead Parish Church knitting group! Each P1 was given their very own Buckstone teddy bear! P1L would like to say a massive thank you to the knitters for our teddies and that we love them so much! A journalist from the Edinburgh Reporter came to school and took the P1’s photograph with their bears. You can see the photos and news article here.

This week we have been learning all about rhyme. We read a story, which the class were able to point out that lots of the words in it sounded the same. We then played games in the classroom which allowed the children to explore rhyme for themselves. We are also loving hearing about what’s inside each child’s memory box! A kind reminder that if you haven’t brought yours in yet, could you do so sometime next week please.

This week the Primary 1s were showing off their amazing counting skills! We have been practicing counting up to 20 and beyond! We also have been practicing counting down from 10!

Other Areas

P1 has been learning all about the Colour Monster and how it is important to know which emotion we are feeling. We designed our own emotion monsters and talked about times and places where we have felt happy, sad, scared and excited and why we felt that way.

We also learned about lions! We learned that lions live in big groups called Prides, they are really fast and have big loud roars. We also coloured in our own lions for our class identity display.

Our daily routines are also starting to become familiar. We practiced how to line up quietly, how to walk to the cloakroom sensibly, how to get ready for going outside to play and the importance of listening to someone when they are sharing an answer or idea. Well done P1L for working really hard this week on developing our routines!

Things to Try at Home

We would love it if the P1s could practice some skills which would help transitions between breaks and learning/play. We are trying to build on their independence so that daily routines can be done quicker and more smoothly.

Try and practice: Changing shoes (fastening buckles and Velcro themselves, making sure they are on the right foot), putting on, zipping up jackets (and turning sleeves the correct way round), opening snacks themselves and tidying up after play.

Happy Weekend!

I would just like to note that on Mondays Ms Leach will be teaching P1L. There will be a couple of other dates which she will be teaching the class but I will inform the children the day before. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with either of us with any concerns or worries you may have.

I hope you have a lovely weekend and I look forward to seeing you on Monday!
