P6NM Week Beginning 09.11.20

We have had a great week in P6NM. Here is a summary of our learning.

  • We held our first Literature Circles meeting.
  • Our spelling rule was ‘or’ often follows ‘at’, ‘ct’, ‘it’ and ‘ess’ Please see Monday’s blog post for further information.
  • We read more of ‘There’s A Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom’ and discussed the friendship issues that were raised by the characters.
  • We watched an animation based on the game ‘rock, paper, scissors’. We noted down lots of emotions/attitudes that the characters experienced and used these in our imaginative writing.

Opportunities for home learning:

Think back to the animation we watched. Can you identify any of the emotions/attitudes we explored in books/ films you watch?

Here are some of the words we discussed:

  • Horror
  • Fascination
  • Fear
  • Exhilaration
  • Determination
  • Concern
  • Pride
  • Inspiration

Can you remember what each of these words mean?

Write a description of Paper from the point of view of Rock. Can you use a simile?

We have been converting between 12 and 24 hour times as well as calculating time intervals. Working out a time interval means being given two times and calculating the length of time in between the two.

We found that an empty number line is useful for carrying out calculations in this way.

For example, if a flight departs at 09:30 and arrives at 11:05 you could sketch a number line like this to show how you calculated the duration of the flight.

Opportunities for home learning:

  • Think of activities you do over the course of a day. Record some of them and write the times in both 12 hour format and 24 hour format. For example you could write ‘I have dinner at 6.15pm/18:15.’
  • Develop your skills in calculating time intervals by playing this game. There are various levels of difficulty. Remember to use an empty number line to help!

Other areas of the curriculum:

  • We took part in an online assembly on Speak Out, Stay Safe.
  • We started a Space Mission. We have been working in trios to research a planet and begin to make a poster to display our findings.
  • We had fun making paper rockets in a STEM activity. We enjoyed taking these outdoors and investigating the best angles to launch these at!
  • We enjoyed French with Miss Collyns on Friday.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs McFarlane
