World Nursery Rhyme Week

This week is World Nursery Rhyme Week. Listening to and reciting nursery rhymes from a young age increases a child’s chances of being able to read and write. Children attune to the sounds and patterns of rhyme that they hear when listening to a nursery rhyme and this helps them to develop an early understanding of sounds.

Please take a look at the website and share the nursery rhymes with your child in a variety of locations and during different activities. Keep repeating them and practising them!

As your child becomes more confident with the rhymes, say the rhyme leaving the final word missing – can they complete it correctly? Talk about the words sounding the same. Ask your child to think of words that sound the same as other words unrelated to the nursery rhymes.
