P5M – What we have been doing this week 4/12/20
Good afternoon, I hope you have all had a lovely week and enjoy the snow todady!
Literacy
In reading this week we have been focusing on our comprehension skills again. We have been developing our ability to pick out information from the text to answer recall questions as well as understanding questions. We also worked on building our vocabulary by discussing unknown words and strategies to uncover the meaning.
For writing this week we were describing a character from Fantastic Beasts using ‘show don’t tell’. This is where we use all of our descriptive writing skills that we have been developing to infer description of a character, instead of listing their characteristics. P5M were fantastic at this!
Things to do at home –
See the progress record for this week’s reading pages (penguins do not have reading for this week).
Try reading forward and reading back to uncover the meaning of any unknown words in your book
Please see spelling document posted on Monday
Maths and Numeracy
Our numeracy focus this week has been multiplication and using a chimney sum to multiply 2 and 3 digit numbers by 1 digit. We will continue to practise our time tables and multiplications using algorithms.
For our shape topic this week we were learning about perimeter. We discussed what it is and the ways we can calculate it.

Practise your times tables throughout the week to improve your mental multiplication. Focus on times tables you find tricky
Other curricular areas
- For our environment topic (Free the Forest) we have been researching and designing our very own bio-diverse eco-gardens. We carried out our own research using the laptops into what features would make our gardens bio-diverse. We then designed the layout of our gardens.
- We focused on some Christmas art this week for the art exhibition. We loved going around the school and looking at all the class’s artwork. The snow made it nice and Christmassy for us!
Have a great weekend!
