P2/3 Golden Treasures Reflective Friday week beginning 7th December

Important note: although we will continue to read in class until the end of term, we will not be sending any more reading books home until the new term in January. Thank you all for your support this term with reading at home- sending your children’s books into school each day and returning books every Thursday- it is much appreciated. We will be revising spelling patterns covered so far therefore there will be no new spellings posted on the blog until the new year.

Here’s a snapshot of what we’ve been up to this week:


  • We have been continuing to enjoy our class novel, The BFG
  • Reading in our reading groups and during BEAR time
  • Listening and Talking: thinking about a book we have enjoyed and preparing a book talk all about it. We have been sharing our book talks in class this week.
  • Spelling: using Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check to practise our words and making our own word searches.
  • Team Jewel: single sounds q, x, y z. Blending sounds to make words such as zap, fox, yap, quit
  • Team Gold: initial consonant blends, for example, br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr, tr. Words include: drop, trap, gran, pram, frog, brush, trip, crash.
  • Team Treasure: magic e for a words; Core list: cake, make, brake, ate, late, date, frame, shame, spade, scrape; Challenge list: grate, handmade, framed, calculate, escape, ashamed, aeroplane, blameless, elated, deflate; Tricky words: because, want.
  • Writing our book talks, which included writing a summary and writing letters to Santa.
  • Continuing to work on handwriting, focussing on correct formation of our letters (cursive and non cursive).

Ideas for home learning

  • Use Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check to practise the spelling words above for your group.
  • Keep practising the tricky word lists that were sent home
  • Tell an adult at home about the book you chose for your book talk and why you chose it.


  • Continuing our learning about telling the time using analogue and digital clocks (o’clock, half past and quarter past and to times)
  • Chilli challenge completing number sequences in our jotters.
  • Continuing our learning on addition and subtraction, using the skills we have been learning to add up amounts of money and calculate change- this was very tricky and we will revisit it next term.
  • Beat-that sums– working out addition sums as quickly as possible.
