P.1 W Reflective Friday 26/ 11/21

Hello and Happy Friday! Hope that everyone has had a good week. We have had lots of fun learning in Primary 1W this week.

Independent learning

Literacy

This week our focus sounds were c , k and ck. We continue to revise all the sounds taught so far. We introduced the new tricky words was and saw as well as revising our previously learned words. We continue to practice blending using the sounds we have covered so far.

We are continuing to develop our fine motor skills to help us with handwriting. We do this through lots of activities in the classroom as well as our funky fingers sessions. Our handwriting this week focused on correctly forming the i letter.

Our writing prompt this week was “When I was little.” We are focusing on developing our story telling skills by discussing all our ideas as a class, then using drawing to create a detailed picture which clearly tells a story, and finally retelling our story for an adult to ‘scribe’ for us. Many of us have been “having a go” at writing and mark making all by ourselves. As a challenge some of us have been learning how to write sentences using capital letters, full stops and finger spaces.

Literacy home learning ideas:

  • Practice creating words using the new sounds and the tricky words from the blue homework sheets.
  • Encourage mark making indoors and outdoors (sounds, words, drawings, etc).
  • Read books to your children as often as possible.

Numeracy

This week we have recapped lots of the different maths learning we have learned this term. We revised pattern and symmetry, 2D shapes, number bonds to 10 and 20 and numbers to 10 or 20. Our challenge group recapped numbers beyond 20 and practised their addition skills.

We continue to practice the days of the week and months every day.

Other Curricular Areas:

In outdoor PE we continued with our Daily Mile.

In indoor PE we have been focusing on ball skills: we have been learning about underarm and overarm throwing and rolling and aiming a ball.

We continued to rehearse our Christmas show by practising our songs. We have been really enjoying singing together. Lots of us have been proudly sharing our lines with each other.

We continued with our polar explorer topic this week. We explored polar animals and discussed the characteristics which help them to keep warm in such a chilly climate.

We also explored the different qualities of water focusing on melting and freezing. We left ice cubes outside overnight to see if they would freeze. It was not cold enough unfortunately but we will try again! Thankfully Miss Wyatt had frozen some in her freezer so we could explore how quickly ice melts. Lots of great ideas of how to make it stay frozen longer and how to make it melt faster.

  • In outdoor learning this week we read the story of “Leaf Man.” We then went outside and worked with a partner to create our own leaf men and leaf girls! Some great co- operative and artistic skills were shown.

Things to remember-

  • As the weather is getting cooler and wetter, please ensure your child comes to school in an appropriate coat and footwear. ( wellies are great on a rainy day as our playground can get very puddly).
  • If your child has had to change clothes any day, please remember to send new spare clothes the next day so that we don’t run out of dry socks – our playground is often full of puddles.
  • Our PE days are Monday and Tuesday. Please ensure that your child comes dressed appropriately. On Tuesday the children need to wear indoor PE shoes.
  • Next Friday your child will take home some work they have done this term so you can see their progress and be aware of areas for development. We hope that you enjoy discussing this and celebrating their success with them. Literacy and numeracy comments will be uploaded to the learning journals
  • On Tuesday 30th we are inviting the children to wear something tartan, if they wish, to celebrate St Andrew’s Day.

We are here to help and support you so please feel free to send in any questions or concerns via office admin or if you are happy to catch us at the door at the beginning/ end of the day.

Thanks for your continued help and support.

We hope you enjoy a lovely weekend!

Miss Wyatt 😊
