P1W – Reflective Friday – 06/05/2022

Hello and welcome back! I hope that you all enjoyed the extra few days of holiday this week.

Some of our independent learning this week

Literacy –

This week our focus has been on developing talking and listening skills. Children had the opportunity to present a talk about their favourite place and did a great job. It has been lovely to see lots of the children’s confidence grow when presenting information to their classmates. Many thanks for supporting your child in preparing and practicing for this activity at home.

We will return to our usual reading schedule next week.

Writing –

This week we wrote a letter to the queen to celebrate her Jubilee and inviting her to our party! We will post them next week. We really hope that she writes back to us.

Numeracy and Maths –

In Maths this week we started our new Time topic. This week we recapped the days of the week, practising saying them in order. We also looked at the months of the year and the various features of the four seasons. We considered our daily routines and used this to introduced the idea of o’clock, starting with analogue clocks and using the 12 hour clock. As an extra challenge some of us looked at telling the time using half past .

Other curricular areas:

  • This week we explored the celebration of Eid, learning about the story behind it and how it is celebrated. We really enjoyed hearing from Mrs Ahmed. We enjoyed making some traditional Eid sweets and tasting these in class!
  • We also enjoyed discussing what we can eat to stay healthy and creating our own healthy lunches.
  • We continued with our space topic – this week we learned more about the different things in our solar system, such as the planets, the sun, comets and stars.
  • We enjoyed working as a class to create our own rocket ship. The children planned this collaboratively and discussed the features a rocket needs and which materials, we should use and why. It is now up on our class wall so they can admire their amazing work!
  • During Outdoor learning we enjoyed using chalk to create solar system pictures.
  • During Assembly this week we enjoyed learning about making a difference in our school and community.
  • We have been really enjoying having the big bricks back and it has been wonderful to see the children coming up with come really complex and inventive structures.
