Buckstone’s Wee Sleep Out 2018!

I just wanted to say how incredibly proud I am of all of the Primary 6 children who took part in the Wee Sleep Out last night!

The children have taken a leading role in the planning, advertising, research and organisation of this event from the beginning and have shown how determined, resilient and passionate they are to support a very worth while cause!

Well done everyone!

P6 Christmas Fair Craft

Primary 6 children have been asked to make something crafty to sell at the christmas fair.

We would like to make glass candle holders.  (using battery operated tea lights)

Please, if possible, could you bring in a glass jar by the end of next week – Friday 23rd November to enable us to have enough time to decorate these to sell at the fair which is taking place on Friday 30th November.

If you have extras, these would also be gratefully received.

Many thanks,

P6 Team

Literacy

Class Novel – This week we finished our class novel Friend Or Foe by Michael Morpurgo. The whole class loved this book and can’t wait to read more of his work. Our task this week was to find evidence from the text to show if the Germans were friends or foes. Then we had to create a colorful poster with the evidence on it and then we put them in our learning stories.

Reading – This week in reading we had another meeting with our reading group to discuss our literature circle roles. We had to have a discussion director, an artful adventurer, a super summarizer, a literary luminary and a character captain. We shared our learning with our reading group and then discussed our roles for next week.

Spelling – This week in spelling we learned ous which says us. We had to split the words into syllables and then think of our own words. E.g. ner/vous, mar/vell/ous and con/tag/ious.

Topic – This week for our topic we had to carry on with our space shuttle launch story by upleveling some sentences and then continuing the story.

MATHS

  • In maths we have been learning how to round in tens, hundreds, thousands and for some people tens of thousands
  • EG-3465 tens-3470 hundreds 3500 thousands-3000.
  • Also we have been doing our beat that’s and a new type of math’s called the clic test.  In the clic test we have to demonstrate our understanding of the different written methods of calculations.
  • Please see our video clip for an explanation:

Topic

In topic we have been learning about space. We learned how to up level sentences for example {my mind was racing with lots of different thoughts and question} is up leveled to {amazingly my mind zoomed with thousands of thoughts and questions }

Sewing – Skills Time

During Skills Time we have been practicing sewing so we can make a soft sculpture for our P1 buddies. Our buddies have designed their monster toy and we have begun to make this out of felt.  We have been practising our sewing now for weeks so we are excited to finally start making the finsihed piece.

P6 Wee Sleepout!

Primary 6 have decided to support the local charity Social Bite!

Social Bite are on a mission to STOP homelessness in Scotland.

The way P6 are going to support them is by doing a Wee Sleepout, sleeping in the gym hall.

The reason we chose to do a sleepout rather than anything else is because every year Social Bite do a sleep in the park to raise money. We wanted to know what it would feel like to be sleeping out of our comfort zone with no mattress, and no technology, but it won’t be as bad as being homeless but it will still be hard.

Literacy

In literacy we learned how to write a synopsis for a short film. The short film was called Alma. It was about a little girl. She wrote on a wall and a doll pops up she goes inside the shop and gets sucked in to it.

In our class novel Friend or Foe, we sorted quotations from the book in to chronological order. We mapped the change in point of view of the main character David and discussed how this had changed over time.

Thanks to Finlay for writing this section of the blog.

We also held our first Literature Circle meetings – these were very successful! We have been reminded to think about our role for next week while we are completing our reading homework.

Numeracy

Time:

  • working out time calculations using bus/train timetables and tv schedules
  • calculating the duration of events
  • converting between units of time (minutes to hours)

Number:

  • explaining what a factor is and working out all of the factor pairs of a number
  • identifying and explaining what prime numbers are
  • using a range of strategies to complete written calculations in the clic test
  • developing our speed and accuracy of mental maths in the Beat That tests
  • using the grid method to complete 2 digit x 2 digit multiplication calculations. (please see video)

Other Areas of the Curriculum

  • We have been finishing our space posters. We have been given a planet to research about and you need to, in a group, make an eye-catching poster to present to the class. I think everyone is enjoying doing the Space Posters and are looking forward to presenting them.
  • In ICT we have been learning about formulas and the names of the bars in Excel. We have enjoyed this because our class likes to learn something new every day.
  • We have been carrying on our knowledge of sewing and we have been sketching and planning our P1 buddies designs in order to make an attractive toy you could buy out of a shop. I think we are all excited to do this for our buddies and our buddies are excited to get them too. We have not started yet but I think it will be a real challenge.
  • We have continued to respond to Holst’s Planet Suite and will soon be creating our own pieces of music.
  • A new Resilience topic, ‘Talk Things Over’ was launched in assembly this week.
  • We are super excited that we now have permission from the council to take part in the wee sleep out!  It will be happening on Thursday 15th November to raise money for Social Bite –  a homeless charity.

Thanks to Amelie for writing this section of the blog.

Our Learning in P6N w/c 22nd October

This week we have read some more of ‘Friend or Foe’. We then wrote David’s Diary as a personal reflection about Tucky and David discovering two German soldiers and considering whether the boys should help them or not. We also participated in a Drama activity, Corridor of Thought.

In Numeracy and Mathematics, we have been learning to use Venn diagrams to group multiples. We have learned about factors and common multiples. For one of our morning challenges, we had to use a combination of given numbers to try to reach the given total, by either adding, subtracting, dividing or multiplying.

In our learning about Space, we have been learning about space shuttles. As part of this, we also learnt about the preparations as astronauts prepare for take off, for example, the different people helping the astronauts to get their seat belts on. We have been working in our co-operative learning teams to undertake some more work on our posters about planets.

We have been learning to create questions in our Literature Circles for the rest of our reading group to answer.

LITERACY

This week in Literacy we have been learning about punctuation, character descriptions, presenting and summaries.

Punctuation

We have been revising where to put basic punctuation in our sentences and where to put commas like in lists.  Also we have been thinking of what words would have a capital at the beginning.

Character Description

This week we have also been learning about character description and about taking quotes out of a book to show evidence. We have also been thinking of a character in our books and describing them.

Summary

The other piece of Literacy we have been doing this week is a simple summary. A summary is a small paragraph that describes a story or something that has happened .We have been doing a summary on our class novel Friend or Foe by Michael Mopurgo.

Presenting

We also have been presenting our charity work. This week we have been researching facts about charities and we all presented our work to the school.

MATHS

IN MATHS WE HAVE BEEN LEARNING HOW TO DIVIDE BY 10/100/1000 AND MULTIPLY BY 10/100/1000.

E.G. 46 X 1OOO

THERE ARE THREE ZEROS IN 1000 SO EVERY NUMBER MOVES TO THE LEFT THREE TIMES. YOU MUST USE THREE ZEROS TO HOLD THE PLACE IN THE HUNDREDS, TENS AND UNITS COLUMNS. THE ANSWER IS 46 000.

NOW YOU NEED TO KNOW HOW TO DIVIDE BY 10, 100, 1000.

E.G. 320O DIVIDED BY 100, SO THERE ARE TWO ZEROS IN 100 SO EVERY NUMBER MOVES TO THE RIGHT TWO ZEROS AND END UP WITH 32 AS YOUR ANWSER .

IN MATHS WE HAVE ALSO BEEN PRACTISING OUR BEAT THAT’S. WE ARE TRYING TO GET MORE QUESTIONS DONE IN A CERTAIN TIME.
