# Week beginning 17.02.20

Our highlight this week was Buckstone’s Got Talent. Well done to everyone who practiced and performed in front of an audience!

This week in Maths we were exploring how multiplication and division are linked. We were looking at fact families to help us understand this. Jenni has an example of a fact family below.

We also started exploring money. We were finding different ways to make the same amount. Next we will be working on adding money together.

Our spelling rule this week was magic e with u – e like in cute and use.

We were learning about question marks with Mrs Bailey and we were writing a story with Miss Collyns this week. Our story is about all the different ways we are smart.

We learnt about the artist LS Lowry. We found out he only used 5 colours in his paintings and had a go at creating our own Lowry colours. We had to mix black and white with other colours to create different tones. We think our next step will be to create our own Lowry inspired paintings.

In ICT we were using dance mat typing (on Topmarks) to try and improve our typing skills.

## Home Learning

Please keep reading the assigned reading books and discuss them together. We will be continuing to focus on comprehension this term.

We are starting a focus on money so as much real world experience as possible will benefit the children. We will be looking at adding together different amounts within 10 pounds (for example: 73p and 45p or 60p and 30p). There are also games on topmarks that will support the children’s learning.

# Week beginning 03.02.20

We had a very special visitor this week… PC Scott and PC Rogers came to talk to us about being a police officer! We learnt that some police officers have huge horses, that there are different types of police officers. We learnt that police officers have lots of different equipment like batons, stingers, vests, signs and cones and special jackets. We learnt that they are always trying to keep people safe and that they have to work together lots.

In maths this week we were looking for patterns in the times tables. Some of us were exploring the link between the 5s and 10s, the 2s, 4s and 8s and some of us were looking at the 3s and 6s. For example we know that to work out 9×4 we can first work out 9×2 then double our answer. We have also still been trying to learn our times tables by heart, 2s, 5s and 10s are particularly important. Some of us were proving that we know them to Miss Collyns but we need to keep practising them over the holidays!

Thank you to everyone who came to see how we are getting on in gymnastics! This week we were also looking at climbing the ropes and getting better at the splits, teddy bear rolls, bridges and balancing.

# Drop In tomorrow, 05.02.20

Hello,

P3C will be at gym tomorrow morning during the drop in. Parents and families are welcome to join us as part of the drop in experience.

Please come into the school through Door 3, the P5 door and then wait outside the new gym hall until P3C are changed and ready to go.

# Week beginning 27.01.20

This week we all became published poets! We worked hard to be authors, editing, improving and sharing out work with others.

In maths we have been learning our times tables with Miss Collyns and exploring symmetry with Mrs Bailey. We experimented with trying to add actions to help us learn our times tables. Some of us said it helped while some of us said we liked to write them down to learn them.

Our spelling rule was the magic e again but this week we looked at when it is an i_e like in ride and divide. Most of us are feeling confident with the magic e!

We had music with Mary. She taught us a new song and helped us learn about rhythm and beats in songs.

We learnt about the Ambulance Service for topic and got to create drama scenes involving paramedics and ambulances. We have really enjoyed being doctors and nurses as well during skills time.

In health and wellbeing we thought about what qualities make a good friend and we thought about our own best qualities.

Our Growth Mindset Hero of the week was Dillon who did a fantastic job at describing our class dog for his poem. He had lots of fantastic describing words and worked hard to meet the success criteria, well done!

Buckstone’s Got Talent will be held on February 20th with the House Captains acting as judges. P3 can put through 2 acts to the competition so we will be holding P3 auditions on Wednesday 19th February. Good luck!

# Week beginning 20.01.20

Learning Stories have come home today with new targets the children have set for themselves. We have started working towards them already! Please can Learning Stories be returned to school by Tuesday 28th January.

This week we have been working hard to be poets. We were trying to create poems with a pattern, some rhyming words, lots of WOW words and that were describing an object not telling a story. Some of us found it a challenge but we are very proud of what we have created so far! Our next step will be to edit and improve them so we can publish and share them.

We have been learning about the magic e spelling rule this week. This video helped us understand what the magic e does to words. We know that the magic e changes the sound from the letter sound to the letter name. For example, the a sound changes between hat and hate and in cap and cape. We also explored what strategies help us learn best with some of us trying writing our words to learn them, some of us trying saying them and some of us trying to act them out to help us remember.

In maths we have been exploring different strategies to help us work out multiplication sums. This week we looked at how arrays can help us picture and solve a problem. We have also been working to learn our times tables by heart.

We were also learning about symmetry with Mrs Bailey. We explored different shapes and investigated whether they had lines of symmetry or not.

We talked about what we would like to learn for our new mini-topic: Emergency Services. Some of the questions we had were: What equipment do they use? What training do they do? How long have there been emergency services? We would love to hear from any parents or family members who have experience in this area and would like to share their knowledge with us!

In ICT we were learning how to save files to a location as well as develop our skills in clicking and dragging, using the mouse, opening applications and re-sizing windows.

In PE we started to develop our gymnastics skills. This week we were trying to improve our balance and control of our bodies. We had to use our tummy muscles a lot! We tried yoga, rolling, jumping and balancing on the beam. Lots of us found the teddy roll quite challenging and we all enjoyed trying different yoga poses.

We have also been trying our best to be Growth Mindset Superheroes this week! We were inspired by these paralympians and our class motto at the moment is ‘YES I CAN’. Kai was a superhero in maths this week because he tried different strategies to solve a multiplication sum and he didn’t give up even though he found it tricky. Blake had a fantastic growth mindset attitude in maths this week because he believed in himself and took on the challenge of harder problems to solve. Abigail was a growth mindset superhero because she didn’t give up on her poetry writing but tried a different strategy and created a poem she was very proud of.

## Home Learning

Choose one of the times tables we have been working on to practice at home. We have been practising (and will continue to practice) the 2,3,4,5 and 10 times tables.

We have been learning about poetry and have enjoyed listening to and performing different poems.

Speak to someone at home about a poem they enjoyed as a child. What was it about and why did they enjoy it? If it is possible, you might wish to read or listen to the poem together.

# Week beginning 13.01.20

Happy 2020! We have launched straight into the new year and have been working very hard this week.

We have started exploring multiplication in maths this week. We have been looking at using equal groups to solve problems and show our understanding. We watched this video to help us understand how multiplication sums work.

In literacy we investigated poetry and have been looking for patterns in the sounds and on the page. We discovered that sometimes poem rhyme but they don’t always have to, poems describe a feeling, place, person, thing, weather and seasons and we thought poems were another way to tell a story. We had a go at performing a poem and got to be poetry critics! We analysed ‘shape’ poems and thought about why we liked them.

Our spelling sound this week was the or sound but spelt with au (as in haul and author) or an aw (as in paw or lawyer). We had to think carefully about whether the sound was the or sound or another sound. It’s tricky because the au in cause makes an or sound but the au sound in because doesn’t.

We were learning to open applications and change the size of windows during ICT this week. We could all open applications but some of us found trying to have two windows open side by side on the same screen more of a challenge.

We had music with Mary from the National Youth Choir of Scotland on Tuesday. She taught us some new songs and we were learning about beats and rhythms with her.

# Happy Holidays from P3C!

Thank you for your support at our Carol Concert yesterday, we raised £137 for Guide Dogs!

We hope you have a lovely Christmas holiday and see you in 2020!

# Week beginning 09.12.19

We have been practising all week for our carol concert which will be on Thursday 19th December at 2.30pm in the new hall. All parents and families are welcome to attend. We will be asking for a small donation at the end of the concert to raise money for our chosen charity: the Guide Dogs.

Cheryl came to speak to us from the Guide Dogs with her puppy called Tommy. We found out about the important jobs guide dogs do to help blind and visually impaired people. Cheryl has to teach Tommy to be obedient, she has to socialise him so he is used to going on trains and buses and going places like the cinema or the supermarket. Cheryl has to teach Tommy to always come back when she blows a whistle three times and she has to teach him to go to the toilet in one place. Guide dogs have a special word that tells them when to go to the toilet.

We have been working on our subtraction skills in maths. Some of us were using counting backwards in our heads or on a number line to help us subtract. Some of us were using an empty number line to help us subtract. An empty number line means you can count backwards in bigger jumps.

In literacy, we re-told our reading books by making a comic. We had to choose the most important things that happened in the story and only put those in. We liked making speech bubbles to show what the characters were saying.

We also split up into our different learning teams and had a chance to work with people from other classes across the school.

We loved going to the cinema, especially sitting in the big, comfy sofas!

# Week beginning 25.11.19

We hope everyone who has been sick this week is starting to feel better!

We have been learning to tell the time on analogue and digital clocks this week. We know the minute hand is the long hand and the hour hand is the short hand. Some of us were working on o’clock (always at the top) and half past (always at the bottom) times and some of us were looking at quarter past and quarter to times. We all found quarter to trickiest, especially understanding that quarter to 4 is 3:45 in digital time not 4:45.

We have been independent learners in charge of learning our spelling words with different activities. We had a chance to make our spelling words from blocks, chose a chilli challenge to complete and chose how we would practise our spelling words. Our sound this week can be made in two ways: oi (like in spoil and oil) and oy (like in toy and boy).

We created exciting characters in writing. Next they will be going on an adventure into a volcano. We loved being creative and were focussing on using WOW adjectives to describe our characters.

We focussed on having a quality discussion as part of our literacy learning this week. We identified the steps to success of a quality discussion as giving sensible answers with lots of detail, answering in sentences that aren’t too long or too short, giving our opinion and giving reasons for them, having good eye contact, speaking clearly, listening carefully and asking follow up questions like ‘why do you think that?’ or ‘tell me more’. We used key language like ‘I agree’, ‘I think’, and ‘because’. We talked about how our next steps will be to make sure we are having quality discussions about our reading books.

We created art using the five patterns in nature and in the style of Andy Warhol. We looked at Andy Warhol’s art and decided he uses the same picture but in different colours, he uses bright colours and he put them all in little squares.

Abigail, Rosie, Lexi and Emma taught us some of the Spring Fling. We asked to learn more about Highland Dancing as part of our topic ‘The Life of Buckstone’.

# Home Learning

Reading: we are focussing on having quality discussions about our reading books in class. I am encouraging the children to give their opinion, reasons for their opinion and to ask questions about the book. Some examples of questions are:

• If you were the main character, what would you have done differently?
• What did you learn from this story? Has it changed your opinion of anything?
• How could you have improved the story?
• How would it effect the story if you changed the setting?
• Was there a ‘secret message’ hidden in the story?

Maths: Using and talking about real clocks (both analogue and digital) throughout the day will be enormously beneficial to the children. If you are looking for some online resources to use as well, you could look at this mathsframe game which can be played with either o’clock and half past or the quarter hour (or the next step which is 5 minute intervals) and uses analogue and digital times. This timetools game is matching o’clock and half past times on an analogue clock and level one of this ictgame explores reading quarter hour times on an analogue clock.

Our whole school Building Resilience focus is ‘Be Kind to Others.’ The children have been exploring a concept called ‘Bucket Filling’ based around a book called ‘Have you filled a bucket today?’ by Carol McCloud. P3C are experts on bucket filling as we are always trying to be a class of bucket fillers. It is an easy-to-understand concept. Everyone carries an invisible bucket that fills up whenever we do kind, considerate, helpful things for others. We call these acts ‘bucket fillers’. When we say things that are mean, inconsiderate, uncaring, or disrespectful to others, this has a negative impact and gradually empties theirs and our buckets. These acts are bucket dippers. We learned that:

·         Kindness makes a difference to ourselves and others

·         Being unkind hurts others, and it hurts us too

·         It is important to be kind to ourselves

For the Family Sharing Activity the children have been asked to think about how they can fill someone else’s bucket. There is a slip of paper that has gone home to support this. Please discuss ideas with your child and we will continue to discuss ideas in class as well.

# Week beginning 18.11.19

Holly’s mum came to speak to us about the history of Buckstone for topic this week. Mrs Carter told us about the old quarry and showed us a photo of the men who worked there 100 years ago. Then we learnt about how Buckstone got its name 500 years ago from the King who went hunting here and started at the Buckstane. 2000 years ago, there were Picts here who fought the Romans in a big battle. Mrs Carter told us about the Picts. We learnt they had blue painted on them and that they drew pictures on stones to tell stories and mark their property. We had a go at designing our own Pictish carvings on stones.

We have been independent learners in charge of learning our spelling words with different activities. We investigated and said if words were real or nonsense, we chose a chilli challenge and chose how we would practise our spelling words. Our sound this week was a stretchy ‘o’ which you can make with oo (like in room and moon) and ew (like in few and threw).

In reading we have been focussing on giving quality answers to discussion questions about our reading books. We know that a quality answer means giving our opinion and reasons for them.

In maths we have been practicing our subtraction skills. Some of us have been taking away 10, some of us used empty number lines as a strategy to help us and some of were having a go at missing number subtraction problems.

For art we went looking for patterns in nature. We were trying to find branching, explosions, meanders, packing and spirals. We used what we found to inspire our art.

We were learning to talk about the weather in French this week. We had a go at acting out different types of weather and drawing them.

In PE we were working on defending as a ball skill. We had a go at playing netball with some people defending. We thought about stars and wishes for each other. Some of the stars were that people were shouting when they were ready for the ball, people had their hands up ready to catch the ball and that some people were finding an empty space to be in. Some of the wishes were to spread out more, pass the ball quicker and work as a team more.

We were learning to use the trackpad in ICT this week. We were focussing on clicking, double clicking and using the mousepad to move the mouse. We played different games online and used Paint on the computers to practise these skills.

# Home Learning

Reading: we are focussing on having quality discussions about our reading books in class. I am encouraging the children to give their opinion, reasons for their opinion and to ask questions about the book. Some examples of questions are:

• Where is the book set? How did the main character feel at the start of the book and at the end of the book? Why did it change? Who is telling the story? What is the story about? What kind of book is it and how do you know?
• Who are the main characters? Name three adjectives to describe your favourite character? What was the main problem in the story and how did the main character solve it? What did you learn from the book?
• Could you improve the story? What parts would you change? Do you agree with the character when they did …. Could the main character solved the problem in another way? Does the book have a hidden message?
• What was the most interesting part of the book and why? Why do you think the character did… Who was this story written for? Which character would you like to be friends with and why?
• What did you learn from the story? Have you had a similar experience? Would you recommend this book to a friend and why? Did this book give you any new ideas about yourself and why?
• What is the relationship between the main characters? Why do you think the main character chose to … Why did the author use …. word? Can you create a different ending to the book? Why would you change it?

Spelling: the children have opportunities to practice in class through a number of active strategies, all of which could be done at home as well. A particular favourite is drawing a picture and hiding the words in the picture. If you were wanting to use an online resource as well, you could enter the spelling list (posted on a Monday) into spellingcity and try out some of their games as another way to practise.

Maths: we will be looking at time next week. You could be discussing useful vocabulary like quarter past, quarter to, half past and o’clock at home to support this.
