P5 fundraising for Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity (Sick Kids)

Hello,

In P5 we are going to be doing a toy sale to raise money for the Sick Kids Foundation. It is going to be on Thursday 4th April in school near the P5 classrooms.

If you have any toys that you would like to donate can you please bring them in next week and by Monday 1st of April at the latest.

Please don’t bring in toys that you want to keep, you can bring in toys that you don’t play with any more or that have been sitting in your cupboard. It might be a good time to have a spring clean!

Please put any toys you bring in on the table in the P5 library.

Some examples of toys we would like are

Books

Action figures or Barbies

Soft toys

Cars

Baby toys so you can buy them for younger brother and sisters

Board games

Loom bands

Lego

Cards

Can you please make sure the toys are clean and good quality.

Week Beginning 18.03.19

Literacy & Reading.

This week we have been having a revision week!

Please continue to revise and practise sounds and ‘tricky’ words’ at home.
New reading books will be sent home next week – Monday/Tuesday.

Below are some tricky words which we are finding tricky to read. Please work on these at home: come, some, one, you

During reading we have also been really focusing on finding rhyming words, and thinking of words which rhyme. 

  • Writing – This week we used our creative writing skills wrote about ‘Michael Recycle’ and what we thought might happen next!
  • Dictation – children have been working on remembering how to write our tricky words. We also used peer assessment for the first time and marked each others work!
  • Reading – Children should now be trying to use their knowledge of the digraphs (oo, ee, oi, ch, th, ai etc) to read bigger words.

 

Maths/Numeracy

 

  • We have been focusing on revising maths skills this week (addition, subtraction, order and counting forwards/backwards).
  • Subtraction – we have had a whole class focus on subtraction calculations this week. To help with skill you can practise counting backwards.

 

Other Curricular Areas

  • P.E. – We have been working on team work games to encourage communication and new friendships.
  • P.E. – We have been continuing to work on our new skill of skipping. We are enjoying this new challenge!
  • P.E. – Children have been enjoying the Daily Mile, Go Noodle and Cosmic Kids Yoga as part of their P.E. too.
  • Science and Technology – we have been exploring different types of materials, how strong they are, and how we can use these materials to build!
  • ICT – we are now using iPads to support our learning. Children have been great at sharing and not spending too much time on the iPads!

 

 

Learning Through Play

  • Fine Motor Skills- we continue to focus on hand strength using pegs, threading, play-dough and cutting activities.
  • Science – children have had the opportunity to plant some bulbs and explore different types of bulbs – we are still watching these grow!
  • Role Play – Some children have been enjoying singing and dancing this week!
  • Role Play – in the house corner some children have enjoyed playing ‘families’ and have been looking after the babies.
  • Sand Play – children have been exploring wet sand playing with different shaped moulds.

Extra Information

 

  • We have a new ‘whole school focus’. In order to become more eco-friendly, we are encouraging recycling at Buckstone Primary School! We are starting small with crisp packets – if your child has crisps for snack we are asking them not to put the packet in the bins outside. We have bins in each classroom for these to be stored and then a main bin at reception that will be collected to be recycled!
  • We were invited to watch the P2 Spring Show. We really enjoyed all the singing and dancing! Well done P2!

P4 Food Bank Charity Collection

Primary Four are organising a food bank collection for the Edinburgh Food Project, who support families who are struggling to provide food for their families. We are looking for donations from the whole school to support this amazing charity. We require all donations to be in school by Friday 29th March.

 Here is a list of the products that are currently required by the food bank:

Urgently Needed: Instant coffee (jars), cold meat (tins), fruit juice (long-life), tea bags (packs of 40s), tinned fish, sugar

Low On Stock: Rice (500g bags), tinned fruit, toilet roll, tinned vegetables, tinned potatoes, tinned rice pudding, pasta sauces (jars), tinned custard, tinned tomatoes, jam.

We can also donate hygiene items such as: deodorant, shampoo, shaving foam & toilet roll.

 ****Please do not send fresh items as refrigeration is not available.****

Please send your donations to school with your child and ask them to pass them on to Primary Four.  Your donations will be greatly appreciated.

Literacy & Reading

  • Writing – This week we talked about ‘Beach Pollution’ as part of our topic and wrote about what we could see in a picture of beach pollution.

 

Numeracy & Maths

 

Maths/Numeracy

 

  • We are having a focus on numeracy skills this week (addition, subtraction, order and counting forwards/backwards).
  • Addition – we are encouraging children to use different strategies to complete addition calculations. For addition, we model putting the bigger number in our head and counting forwards the small number – feel free to give this a go at home. Your child should be able to show you how it works!
  • Subtraction – we have worked on subtraction calculation this week. To help with skill you can practise counting backwards.

 

 

Other Curricular Areas

 

  • P.E. – We have been working on team work games to encourage communication and new friendships. We have also been working on skipping with a rope and throwing and catching with bean bags.
  • P.E. – Children have been enjoying the Daily Mile, Go Noodle and Cosmic Kids Yoga as part of their P.E. too.
  • Science – children have had the opportunity to explore how flowers grow, decorate plant pots to grow flowers and explore different types of seeds. We will plant some seeds, watch them grow and learn how to look after these as they grow.
  • Health and Wellbeing – The foxes have been focusing on being kind this week!

  • Science – children have had the opportunity to plant some bulbs and explore different types of bulbs.
  • Role Play – in the house corner some children have enjoyed playing ‘families’ and have been looking have their new babies.

 

  • Play Time – we have been setting a ‘Play Time Challenge’ to encourage new friendships. We have been asking P1 to think of someone in the class they have never played with and ask them to play or playing with their learning partner.

Literacy & Reading

This week’s new sounds are oi and oy. ‘Tricky Words’ are said and come. Please continue to revise all sounds and ‘tricky’ words’ at home.

• Writing – This week we wrote about Our favourite character from a book for World Book Day. The children loved sharing their books with their peers.

Numeracy & Maths

• Maths – we have continued to explore time. We have now covered predicting what time it will be in 2hours, 3hours, 4hours etc. we have also discussed what time was it 2hours, 3hours, 4hours ago etc.
• You could also talk about times of the day (bed time, dinner time, time to get up) and read these on the clock together.
• We have also been continuing our learning on add two amounts together .

Other Curricular Areas

• P.E. – We have been working on our fitness levels in P.E. Children have been working their way round a circuit. We are also using positional language in P.E.
• P.E. – Children have been enjoying the Daily Mile and Cosmic Kids Yoga as part of their P.E. too.

•IDL – This week we took our learning outside, and we explored the school grounds. We then got the chance to make maps of the school of what we saw.

 

Learning Through Play

• Technologies – Children have been using the recycling to build models and explore how to join different materials using glue, tape and ‘blue-tac’.
• Technologies – Children have also been making paper aeroplanes and testing how far/high they can fly them.
• Fine Motor Skills- we continue to focus on hand strength using threading, play-dough and cutting activities.

P1 Squirrels/Foxes

P1 Parents/Carers,

This week at school we are celebrating World Book Day. We are not having a dress up day at school, we plan on celebrating by doing other activities. We understand some of the children will be disappointed by this, please feel free to dress up and home and send your children in with a photo to share at school. Your child can also bring along their favourite book to read and share!

•We wrote stories about space this week for the world book day competition , and they were out of this world!

Numeracy & Maths

• Maths – we have continued to explore time. We have now covered reading the time to o’clock and half past

• You could also talk about times of the day (bed time, dinner time, time to get up) and read these on the clock together.

•Numeracy – We have been working a lot on adding this week using number sentences. eg 3 + 5 = 8

Other Curricular Areas

• P.E. – We have been working on our fitness levels in P.E. and children have been working their way round a circuit. We are also using positional language in P.E.
• P.E. – children enjoyed P.E. out in the sunshine using our new equipment. Our focus this week is sharing and communicating.
• French – Miss Davidson read Goldilocks and the Three Bears to the class in French!
• Music – All children in P1 took part in singing this week and all managed to sing a small solo part to the rest of their group!
• Health and Wellbeing – We are focussing on ‘Get Active’ this week. Children have shared what they like to do to be active. We know the children are also keen to start their ’30 Day Challenge’ at home – Good Luck!!!

Learning Through Play

• Role Play –The children are still enjoying using the role play skills in the area, they have used the role play area to create a house and a hospital.
• Drawing – Some children have really enjoyed drawing and creating jewellery this week.
• Dance – children have made a dance floor and have been sharing their dance moves along with singing.
• Fine Motor Skills- we continue to focus on hand strength using threading, play-dough and cutting activities.

Junk Modelling

Tomorrow (Wednesday 27th February), the P1 foxes are going to be making some junk models of bridges that we see in our local environment in the classroom.

Please feel free to send in any junk materials we could use for this from home, helping us to save our environment by reusing! Unfortunately we cannot accept any empty egg boxes or old toilet rolls.
