1.12.17 P2cheetahs. What we have been learning this week.

Literacy

It was Book Week this week and we had a great time with role play exploring our Book Shop.

We listened to a librarian and a fabulous storyteller who told stories all about giants Maybe you could tell someone what happened in the story.

P4 were our book buddies and we shared our books with them

READING

We enjoyed looking at a variety of books this week and sharing our favourite with each other. We looked at the difference between faction and non  fiction.

We are continuing to work in class on predicting, analysing and discussing the wide range of texts we read – including, but not limited to, our home reading books.

SPELLING

We have been investigating what happens to the u vowel when we add magic e.

We worked on  tricky word patterns of would, should, could , kind and find.

On our Spelling City page, you can access the tricky word lists and some fun games to play for extra practice.

WRITING

We wrote a Book Review and made word pots full of exciting new words we found in our books.

We talked about lists and how useful they are . We made lists of things we would need if we went to Space.

Numeracy & Mathematics

We are using our counting back skills to help us with our understanding of subtraction.

We investigated symmetry using 2d shapes. We looked at symmetry in our environment.

Can you spot any examples of symmetry in your home?

Other areas of the curriculum

We celebrated St Andrew’s Day by finding out interesting facts abut out patron saint. We loved taking part in the conga around the school.

P2 had a joint PE lesson and we enjoyed the team games we played.

We continued to work learning to sing some traditional Christmas songs ready for our concert in December ! We love this time to get together too.We discussed the Nativity story and the origins of Christmas day. We made our own  Advent Christmas Tree.

Our Eco rep told us all about litter in the playground and that we must use the bins.

Our Pupil Parliament Rep shared some of the discussions  they had.

“All About Me”

Thank you to all the parents/carers who have completed the “All About Me” sheet with their child.  Celebrating Wider Achievement is a much looked forward to part of the school day/week and seeing all of the activities/clubs pupils at Buckstone attend is fantastic! The range is amazing! The information gathered from these forms will only be used at school level to now identify any opportunities the school can offer the children.

Additional copies will be sent home over the next week if you have not managed to fill it out yet.

Thank you.

24.11.17 P2cheetahs. What we have been learning this week.

Literacy

READING

We are continuing to work in class on predicting, analysing and discussing the wide range of texts we read – including, but not limited to, our home reading books.

Please support us at home by using the reading rocket bookmark as a prompt for your discussions. As there will be no fluency books this term we would encourage the children to choose extra reading material from their home bookshelves or a local library.

SPELLING

We have been investigating what happens to the o vowel when we add magic e.

On our Spelling City page, you can access the tricky word lists and some fun games to play for extra practice.

WRITING

We wrote an account of our weekend news and in our writing we tried to use some of the tricky spelling words we have been learning.

We also did an imaginative piece of writing about a visit to the moon.

Numeracy & Mathematics

We are using our counting back skills to help us with our understanding of subtraction.

We have spent time creating and investigating patterns. We discovered that you could make towers with the pegs but that eventually the tower would flop over.

Other areas of the curriculum

We have been finding out all about the moon and trying to find answers to some of the questions we had identified when we planned our topic. We have also learned about the first man to ever walk on the moon and what has happened to his footprints since then.

As we have a few clear nights forecast this week it would be great if you could find time to look for the moon in the sky and see how much of its surface we can see at the moment.

We are learning how the sun, the moon and the earth rotate around each other to give us night, day and seasons.

Some of us want to know more about the solar system and have been doing our own research. It is a fascinating subject.

In in preparation for the school fair we baked some goodies to sell – thank you to the parents who came in to help.

We are already  hard at work learning to sing along to some traditional Christmas songs ready for our concert in December !

Sumdog – Update

Our Sumdog licence expired at the end of last week.

Sadly the provider has increased the licence fee by 60% per pupil. As a result we have decided to investigate other options to support Maths learning via online applications.

We appreciate this will be a disappointment to some pupils who have actively engaged with Sumdog and been motivated to often use the application. We would hope to identify a solution to continue to support the pupils in the near future.

We will use the school library as soon as it is available to us again.

We are learning all about the magic e spelling rule and how it effects the sounds of vowels.

This week we have had great fun looking at magic “e” with “a” with playdough, magnetic letters , sand and paint.

We began Block 3 tricky words but keep practising Block 1 and 2 .

We explored shapes within Halloween pictures trying to identify and recognise as many properties as we could.

Other areas of the curriculum

Following on from our class story ‘The Owl Who was Afraid of the Dark’  we began to investigate  nocturnal animals. We have used science clips and non fiction books to explore the lives of habits of nocturnal animals.

We brainstormed what we already knew about owls and then found out some  more interesting facts using the internet to answer our questions.

Our Owl Facts

We began an Owl display and using our fine motor skills for cutting and drawing are in the process of making our own fabulous owls.  We used circles and semi circles and finished them off with feathers

In PE we joined with P2D for ball skills and were learning how to dribble using a football  and  passing and marking in team games

We learnt all about Bonfire Night safety and will be able to tell everyone how to have a safe November 5th.
