What have we been learning in P2D this week? (Week beginning 4.12.17)


This was the last week of reading coming home. We will work on reading a class text in class in next week.


We were continuing to revise all magic ‘e’ sounds and compound words. We also were identifying rhyming words in poems and continuing our own poem.


  • We were identifying a half and quarter of a shape making sure each part was equal.
  • We were counting in steps of 2, 5 and 10.
  • We were identifying numbers which are multiples of 10. (10, 20, 30 etc)


  • We can recognise the planets in our solar system.
  • We have been singing each day in preparation for our Christmas Choir
  • Mrs Ritchie came to our class to teach us all about astronauts and Space.
  • We can talk about different Religions in the World and recognise different religious symbols.

We enjoyed:

  • Talking about what we might eat for Christmas Dinner!
  • Writing a poem

Next week we want to:

  • Make and eat our own pizzas linked to our maths topic!
  • Make decorations for our class Christmas Tree.


“All About Me”

Thank you to all the parents/carers who have completed the “All About Me” sheet with their child.  Celebrating Wider Achievement is a much looked forward to part of the school day/week and seeing all of the activities/clubs pupils at Buckstone attend is fantastic! The range is amazing! The information gathered from these forms will only be used at school level to now identify any opportunities the school can offer the children.

Additional copies will be sent home over the next week if you have not managed to fill it out yet.

What have we been learning in P2D this week- Week beginning 27.11.17

Reading & Literacy

Please read a little each day with your child. Can your child spot any compound words? rain + coat = raincoat / sun + flower = sunflower.

Write down any compound words you spot in your reading book or other texts at home and bring these into class to share.

We are continuing to revise all magic ‘e’ sounds in class.

Reading will come home next week for the last time before the Christmas break. 


We are learning all about venn and carroll diagrams in class.

We are also counting backwards in steps of 10 and 5.



  • We have been learning all about ‘night and day’ and we have created posters in cooperative teams.
  • We have been learning all about jobs on a pirate ship. Which job would you like to do?
  • We have had a great time celebrating ‘Book Week’. We shared some examples of our favourite stories. We enjoyed have a Librarian and Story Teller visit our classroom.
  • We took part in a Conga to celebrate St Andrew’s Day. We learned all about why we celebrate St Andrew’s Day too.

We enjoyed:

  • Baking shortbread to celebrate St Andrew’s Day
  • Dropping Everything and Reading (DEAR time)
  • Having P4 reading buddies visit our classroom
  • Writing about the daily life of a pirate.

Next week we would like to:

  • Learn all about Space- Mrs Ritchie will visit our room to share her knowledge!
  • Begin to learn all about poetry.
  • Retell the Christmas Story
  • Continue our Advent Calendar!

Good morning everyone,

Just a post to let you know that your child will bring home their learning story on Friday 8th December. Please share the learning with your child. There will also be report comments on Literacy and Numeracy for this term inside the jotter. Please take time to reflect on the comments and leave feedback in the parent section at the bottom of the page.

Just a little post to remind you to bring in a book from home this week. You can keep the book in your tray. A bell will ring throughout the day from Monday-Friday and we will “drop everything and read!”! How exciting!

Our PE times may change on the lead up to Christmas. Please make sure that you have a PE kit in school.

What have we been learning in P2D this week? Week beginning 20.11.17

Homework activity: A sheet will come home to explain all about our whole school homework resilience task. Who is in your back-up team? Look out for the sheet in your purple bag.


Please read a little each day with your child. Keep a note of any words he/she is finding tricky and work on reading these separately.

Please download and print out the tricky word sheet from a previous post. Work on spelling and reading these words.

We are beginning a ‘Poetry’ unit in class. Perhaps find a poem at home and bring it in to share.


This week we have been reading and recording data in a block graph and pictogram.

Can you share your learning with a parent?


We have been learning all about sources of energy in class. The sun is a source of energy. We will be discussing all about ‘night and day’ into next week.

Key Question: Why do we have night and day?

What we have enjoyed:

  • Creating a block graph and answering questions about it.
  • Continuing to learn our Christmas choir songs.
  • Creating a telescope and pirate portrait

Next week we would like to:

  • Add numbers
  • Play counting games
  • Create our own block graph



Sumdog – Update

Our Sumdog licence expired at the end of last week.

Sadly the provider has increased the licence fee by 60% per pupil. As a result we have decided to investigate other options to support Maths learning via online applications.

We appreciate this will be a disappointment to some pupils who have actively engaged with Sumdog and been motivated to often use the application. We would hope to identify a solution to continue to support the pupils in the near future.

Can you spot any magic ‘e’ words with the a-e, i-e, e-e and o-e sounds as you read?

Who are the main characters in your story? Tell someone at home who they are and something interesting about each character.

Continue working on number bonds at home.

We have been working on our speed when answering basic number bonds to 10. How many ways can you make 10? How many ways can you make 20?

We are also working on reading ‘Grid references’ linked to our pirate topic. Can you tell a parent/carer what we have been learning?

  • We have been learning about how pirates travelled. We have been creating diagrams of pirate ships.
  • We have created large pirates for our learning wall and labelled the different things the pirates are wearing.

  • Creating our own cones linked to the o-e sound.
  • Learning all about ‘energy’ and what ‘energy’ is.
