Term 1

Literacy and Language:

Literacy

Reading

* Working with my literacy circle, I can respond to different types of questions and create interesting questions of my own.

In P7 you will continue to secure your knowledge and understanding. You will have the opportunity to regularly select, compare and listen to or watch texts for enjoyment and interest, and express how well they meet needs and expectations, and give reasons, with evidence, for personal response.

Writing

* By continuing to develop my use of all the VCOP strategies, I can use language and style to engage and influence my reader.

You will regularly select subject, purpose, format and resources to create texts of your choice, and will be encouraged to develop your own style.

Listening & Talking

* I am developing confidence when engaging with others within and outside of the classroom. I can communicate in a clear, expressive way and am learning to select and organise resources independently.

During listening and talking activities you will be encouraged to engage with others, respond in ways appropriate, show that you value others’ contributions and use these to build on thinking. You will identify and discuss the purpose, main ideas and supporting detail contained within the text, and you will use this information for different purposes.

Numeracy and Mathematics:

Shape

Having explored a range of 3D objects and 2D shapes I can use mathematical language to describe their properties.

Through practical activities and the use of technology I have developed my understanding of the link between compass points and angles.

Fractions

I have investigated how a set of fractions, percentages and decimal fractions and can carry out the necessary calculations to solve problems.

This year in P7 you will enjoy exploring and applying mathematical concepts to understand and solve problems. You will have the opportunity to explain your thinking and present your solutions to others in a variety of ways. An emphasis on collaborative learning will encourage reasoning, logical thinking and creativity through discussion of mathematical ideas and concepts. Through effective use of questioning and discussion, Mrs Kirkmali and Mr McKeesick will use misconceptions and wrong answers as opportunities to improve and deepen your understanding of mathematical concepts. You will have the opportunity to consolidate your knowledge in number process, angles, fraction, decimals and percentages, data handling, money and shape.

Health and Wellbeing:

As this is your final year of primary school there will be a focus on giving you more ownership of your learning, this will include increased responsibilities, independent learning and having more pupil voice within the structure of a school day.

Your Personal Learning Profile has changed slightly to include information that you will require for the transition to High School. It is your responsibility to update your profile to ensure the content is relevant and reflects you as a learner.

Mrs Kirkmali and Mr McKeesick are looking forward to the year ahead. We hope you make the most of the opportunities and experiences you will be involved in throughout the year.

Science:

Having explored the substances that make up the Earth’s surface, I can compare some of their characeristics and uses.  SCN 2-17a

Social Studies:

I can describe the main features of a democracy and discuss the rights and responsibilities of citizens in Scotland SCO 2-17a

I can investigate the features of an election and the work of representative at a local, national or European level to begin to develop my understanding of how democracy works SOC 2-18a

I can describe the physical processes of a natural disaster and discuss its impact on people and the landscape SOC 2-07b

Technologies:

Create a movie, using images, text and sounds which will communicate some of my learning and experiences from this term.  TCH 2-04b

Research, design and construct models related to my learning.  TCH 2-14a

Religious and Moral Education:

Explore the lives and teachings of significant figures from world religions to increase my knowledge and understanding of their key beliefs.  RME 2-04b

Develop my understanding of how my own and other people’s beliefs and values affect their actions.  RME 2-09d

Expressive Arts:

I can create and present work that shows developing skills in using the visual elements and concepts (Banksy).  EXA 2-03a

Create, adapt and sustain different roles linked to my learning and experiences. EXA 2-12a

Demonstrate traditional Scottish dances, cooperating and supporting others (for P7 Ceilidh).  EXA 2-10a

Mathematics – its impact on the world: past, present and future

I have worked with others to explore and present our findings on, how mathematics impacts on the world and the important part it has played in advances and inventions.

MTH 2-12a

Overview

Up until the February break you will focus on the outcomes detailed above.  We will also continue to focus on consolidating skills with the four number operations on a Monday and Friday.

This term you will also have the opportunity to apply your mathematical knowledge and skills in a range of exciting ‘real-life’ scenarios while making links with previous learning.  This will be focussed around the ‘Maths in Motion’ theme which will begin after the February break.  This will involve a wide range of exciting challenges including building an electric buggy, bridge engineering and investigating local as well as global journeys.

Health and Wellbeing:

Describe different careers and occupations, making a link to my personal learning, skills and interests which may influence my future.  HWB 2-20a

Describe the changes which happen at puberty, both physical and emotional.  HWB 2-48a

Science:

Through research and discussion I have an appreciation of the contribution that individuals are making to scientific discovery and invention and the impact this has made on society.  SCN 2-20a

I can report and comment on current scientific news items to develop my knowledge and understanding of topical science.  SCN 2-20b

Social Studies:

I can use primary and secondary sources selectively to research events in the past SOC 2-01a.

I can compare and contrast a society in the past with my own and contribute to a discussion of the similarities and difference SOC 2-04a.

I can discuss why people and events from a particular time in the past were important, placing them in a historical sequence SOC 2-06a

Technologies:

Develop an animation movie during which I will explore and experiment with the features and functions of computer technology.  TCH 2-04a

Construct a robot, programming it to undertake a series of tasks and explore the problems encountered during this process and identify ways to improve.  TCH 2-01a/TCH 2-13a

Religious and Moral Education:

Investigate the ways in which followers of world religions mark major life evenst and times of the year to explain key features of festivals and celebrations.  RME 2-06b

Describe and reflect on practices and traditions of world religions.  RME 2-06c

Expressive Arts:

Create images using the style of Enric Miralles (architect of the Scottish Parliament) EXA 2-02a

Communicate my ideas, thoughts and feelings through drama taking inspiration from different stimuli, including poetry and stories.  EXA 2-13a

Listen to a range of music and respond with ideas, thoughts and feelings through musical activities EXA 2-18a, 2-19a
