Zones of Regulation

At Buckstone we want our children to develop the skills they need not only to learn successfully but also to understand themselves, manage challenges and build positive relationships with others. Self-regulation is an important part of this.

Self regulation is the ability to recognise and manage our emotions, thoughts, energy levels and behaviours. It helps children to pause, think about how they are feeling and choose a response that will help them to feel ready to learn and interact positively with others.

We use Zones of Regulation to give children a simple and consistent language for talking about their emotions and how they are feeling.

The four Zones are;

Blue Zone – feeling low, tired, sad, bored or unwell.

Green Zone – feeling calm, focused, happy and ready to learn.

Yellow Zone – feeling excited, frustrated, worried, nervous or overwhelmed.

Red Zone – feeling extremely angry, frightened, out of control or highly distressed.

An important message we teach is that all of the Zones are OK. Being in the yellow or red zone does not mean that a child is ‘bad’, just as being in the green Zone does not mean that everything is always perfect. our emotions provide us with important information.

the aim is to help children to recognise which Zone they are in, understand what might have caused them to feel this way, and learn strategies that can help them regulate their emotions and energy levels.
