This week we have introduced the vowel digraph ee as well as revising some of our ‘tricky’ words

We continue to use core reading book resources in school as we begin to develop developing the children’s reading comprehension skills, exploring the cognitive strategies of activating, inferring, monitoring/clarifying, questioning, searching/selecting, summarizing, and visualising.

We had another Friday ‘dictation/spelling’ written activity. Each week the children will be asked to spell two or three words using the sounds we know, and also to accurately write two of our tricky words. Please keep practising this skill at home.

We have been working on individual numeracy targets this week, including finding the number between two given numbers, adding using the ‘counting on’ strategy, making equal groups, recognising numerals and naming the number after a given number.

You may wish to let your child play this BLAST OFF game at home. Choose a level for identifying numbers or counting on.

Core numeracy skills this week included

• writing the numerals 1 – 10 ( and beyond) correctly
• counting backwards from 10 (or 20 for some pupils).
• naming the next number in an isolated short backwards number sequence. ie. I say, 10, 9, 8 (they say 7)
• establishing a collection (give me 9 counters/raisins/etc)
• counting a collection beyond 10 with accurate 1-1 correspondence
• recognising numerals
• sequencing a short selection of numerals ( e.g. 5,6,7,8)

Looking ahead to next week

On Friday next week, we will be going for a walk and play in the local woodland. This is dependent on there being no staff absences, and also reasonable weather. If it is very wet we will postpone – but a little rain won’t stop us, so please can children come appropriately dressed.

Other areas of the curriculum

We learned about honey bees and bumble bees. Some key vocabulary included , honey…. hive …. beekeeper… swarm…. nectar…. pollinate

In PE we choreographed our own dances using the Scottish Country dance steps we knew. We performed the Flying Scotsman and the Circassian Circle to Mrs Imrie. She was very impressed.

We looked at some Scottish castles – key vocabulary: moat… turrets…drawbridge… portcullis… defence…protect. If any children have photographs of themselves visiting a castle we invite them to bring the photos in to share ( alternatively you could email them FAO Mrs Cross )

Other areas of the curriculum

We learned about volcanoes. Key vocabulary was erupt, extinct, lava, magma. rock, molten. Arthur’s seat.

We learned about some important items invented by Scottish people. These included, amongst many, the telephone, television, penicillin, colour photographs, fridges, toasters, pneumatic tyres, contact lenses and the realisation of usefulness of fingerprints.

We discussed how sound is made by vibrations, and we learned how Alexander Graham Bell used his interest in how sounds are made to help him invent the first telephone. We looked at the vibrations of a violin string.

We identified where Scotland is on a map of the world and also looked on a map of Scotland to find the cities of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Inverness.

We have been learning about some famous Scottish Artists including Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Steven Brown and John Byrne. We have enjoyed creating our own artworks inspired by these artists.

In PE we have learned some more Scottish Country dance steps and we are almost able to dance the ‘Flying Scotsman’ in sets .

Mrs Ross came to talk to us about ways people can be the same or different.

We have been learning about the story of The Nutcracker and the music of Tchaikowsky. We have been moving our bodies in different ways, representing all the parts of the story and creating sequences of movement. We have also enjoyed watching excerpts from the ballet and appreciating the skill and strength of the performers.

• Please can children bring a bag to school on Monday 19th as we will be sending home indoor shoes and changes of clothes to allow you to check for fit and replenish clothes ready to bring back in January.

We have a large collection of unnamed and unclaimed property which we will leave out in the playground in a tray for you to look through. Anything unclaimed by the end iof term will be donated or disposed of. Our box wrapping activity last week was very popular – many thanks for the generous donation of a brand new roll of paper. We would still welcome any donations of surplus Christmas wrapping paper/ribbon and small empty cardboard boxes for wrapping in order to allow more children opportunity to access this activity, but please don’t shop especially – unwanted leftovers are absolutely fine.

Nativity

Our main focus this week was our presentation of the story of the Nativity. The children worked so hard to learn their lines, songs and actions. We performed to an audience 5 times in total, one to the nursery, twice to classes from the school and then twice to parents. We very much hope you enjoyed it.

I’m happy to say that almost all children in the class were very proficient at dressing themselves and changing into their costumes, and folding their clothes neatly. We only have two extra items of unclaimed costume. One vest and one white tshirt. If your child is missing one of these please come to the door to collect or send a message and I can pop it in a purple folder.

This week’s homework sheet includes all of these words. We would like all pupils to be confident in their recognition and spelling of these words by the end of term. We will be continuing to focus on these in class for the next two weeks and would appreciate your support with spelling practise at home..

This week we have been exploring how 10 and a single digit number can stack together to make a teens number. We noticed that the single digit number replaces the zero in the number ten. We had further discussion about people who help us and found out about the roles of a police officer and someone who works on a train serving snacks.

Another very successful loose parts activity session with lots of scientific investigations.

In music we sang songs and played games designed to develop skills of keeping a steady beat. We also explored using our voices in different ways.

In PE we have been focusing on working in teams, sharing resources and following a circuit of activities.

We enjoyed a road safety magic show on Monday. Stop, look, listen and think.

It has been Scottish Book week. The children will today bring home a bag of resources from the Scottish Book trust.
