P1 Koalas Reflective Friday 17.11.23

Hello everyone,

This is what we have been learning this week:

LITERACY

We introduced the new sounds c, k and ck.

In small groups we were thinking about words beginning and ending with these sounds, playing games, and identifying the letters which make these sounds. Some of us were learning how to ‘build’ and ‘blend’ three letter words with the sounds we know.

We also introduced two ‘tricky words’ his and put. Tricky words cannot be sounded out but have to be learned. We will be introducing new tricky words on a weekly basis.

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

Hold up the letters and ask your child to tell you the sound they make. Ask them if they can think of a word beginning with that sound. Play ‘I spy’ using the sounds your child has learnt.

Use letters written on a piece of paper or card to ‘build’ a word. The adult says a three letter word and the child choses the correct sounds to make that word.

An adult makes a three letter word, and the child says the pure sounds of each letter to blend together to read the word.

Write down his and put on a piece of paper or card, hold the cards behind your back then show them to your child and ask them to read the word you have shown them. Your child could practise writing these words, forming the letters the way they have been shown in class.

(If you are unsure about correct letter formation, please speak to one of us at the end of the day).

Writing – Our starter sentence this week was ‘He put his…………’

We are encouraging the children to   try to  write as many of the letters and words as they can.

NUMERACY AND MATHS

In numeracy we have been carrying out some assessments to establish where children are in their learning and to identify next steps.

We were completing our topic on measure, using the language : taller, shorter, heavier, lighter, full, empty, more, less.

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

Please choose an activity from the SEAL wall which was sent home earlier in the term.

PE

We were playing running games to improve our fitness and have fun. We participated in various fitness activities at different stations around the gym hall.

We took part in yoga in the classroom.

RME

We talked about the celebration of Diwali and watched a short film about it.

NATIVITY

We have started practising our Nativity play which will be performed to families on Tuesday 5 and Wednesday 6 December. Your child has a piece of paper with the part they will be playing in their purple folder (If it says N. and a number, they are a narrator). Can you please help your child to learn their words. Further information will be coming out shortly.

WORLD BOOK WEEK

We had a visit from local author Morag Hood. She talked about her job as an author and illustrator and shared two of her books with us: Spaghetti Hunters and Dig Dig Digger. She showed us how she draws one of her main characters and the children drew along with her. They were very engaged in this activity and were proud of the results. Your child should have brought their drawing home in their purple folder yesterday.

LOOSE PARTS

Next date for loose parts is Wednesday 6 December.

SPARE SOCKS AND TIGHTS

As the weather gets wetter, we are always needing a supply of dry footwear. If any families are able to donate any old socks or tights that would be really useful.

INDOOR PE

As we are now doing all of our PE inside can you please make sure that your child has suitable shoes for the gym halls. Can we ask that long hair is tied back.

We will be looking at measure in the next few weeks and began this week by going outside to collect sticks and put them in length order.

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

Quite a few children are finding counting backwards  challenging, here are some fun songs to sing along with which help to practise counting backwards from  20.

PE

We were playing running games to improve our fitness and have fun.

HWB

As part of our Health and Wellbeing programme we were talking about friends and what makes a good friend. The class came up with lots of good ideas:

Someone who is kind to you.

Somebody who likes the same kind of games you do.

Someone who laughs at the same things or makes us laugh.

Someone who looks after you when you are hurt.

We drew pictures of ourselves playing with our friends which you will be able to see at the Drop In.

LOOSE PARTS

Some examples of learning taking place this week:

As the weather gets wetter, can you please make sure that your child has a full change of clothes which are replaced when used. We have a very limited stock of spare clothing in class.

LOST PROPERTY

We have a number of items of clothing which have been left in the classroom. I will put them out on display next Friday at the Drop In so that you can claim any missing items.

Please can you check that your child has brought home the correct jumper as we have had a few missing jumpers which have names on them.

JUNK

Please can you continue to bring in cardboard boxes, plastic trays and packaging for our modelling area as the children really enjoy creating models and building with these items.

P1 Koalas Friday 29.9.23

Hello everyone

It was lovely to have all the children back in school today and to hear about what they have been doing this week. We look forward to getting back to normal next week and to welcoming you and your children to the parent consultations. Lisa Bailey will be covering both consultation evenings next week and I will be attending the ones in February.

Just a couple of housekeeping points:

Please don’t allow your child to bring toys or precious items from home into school. It can be very distressing for the child if these items get damaged or lost.

We have had a few missing items of clothing within the class, please can you check jumpers and cardigans to make sure that they do belong to your child and please continue to name all items of clothing.

Thank you

Have a lovely weekend

HOME LEARNING – LITERACY, THURSDAY 28.9.23

This week we were learning two new sounds – m and r. Watch the Jolly Phonics songs to remind you of the sounds and the actions which go with them.

Have a look around your house or in your garden, try and find five things beginning with m and five things beginning with r.

Draw a picture of each of the things you have found. You could try and write the starting letter for each word.

Try reading some of the three-letter words which have our new sounds in them:

man  map imp mat Sam – look at where the m sound comes in the word, is it the first, second or third sound?

rat tar rip arm ran sir – look at where the r sound comes in the word, is it the first, second or third sound?

If you have used your flashcards to build three letter words like the examples above, you could try making three letter words using pasta, dried beans, or anything else you might have at home.

READING ACTIVITY

Choose a favourite book to read with an available adult at home. When you have finished sharing the book together have a think about the following questions:

Why do you like this book, is it funny? Is the main character someone you would like to be friends with? Are the illustrations attractive? Do the words rhyme? Can you think of a different ending for the story? What do you think might happen next in the story?

DRAWING ACTIVITY

When we read a book together in class, we talk about the name of the person who has written the book, we know that person is called the author.

We also talk about the person who has drawn the pictures in the book, sometimes they are the same person who has written the book, sometimes they are different people. The person who draws the pictures is called the illustrator.

Have a look at some of the picture books you have at home, which is your favourite? Look at the front cover, what is on it? Are the characters from the story on the front? Are the colours bright? Where is the title of the book?

Why don’t you try drawing your own front cover for a favourite book. Maybe you could draw your favourite part of the story, or just the main character or a picture of a building or place from the story. You could try copying the title too.

P1K Home Learning Wednesday 27.9.23

Hello everyone

I hope that you all had a good day yesterday. I am looking forward to seeing you online at 9.30am.

Here is today’s learning.

HOME LEARNING P1 – LITERACY Wednesday 27 September 2023

Writing/drawing task

We have had some very windy weather recently! When you are out walking or even if you just look out the window, you can see the branches on the trees are swaying,  bushes and flowers are waving in the wind too. You can see the effect of the wind on people as well, their clothes are moving, and their hair might be sticking up or swinging about.

Today our writing focus is – My hair was blowing when……………….

Using a black pen, draw a detailed picture of yourself showing your hair blowing in the wind.

Think about where you could be when your hair is blowing- at the park, in the playground, walking to the shops, on your bike, playing in the garden? I’m sure you can think of lots of other ideas.

When you are drawing, think about how your hair would look in the wind, how will you show that it is moving? Are your clothes moving too? What would that look like?

If there is an adult available at home, you could ask them to scribe your story beside your drawing, just like we do in school.

P1 HOME LEARNING Wednesday 27.9.23

 HEALTH AND WELLBEING

This term we are thinking about ‘being resilient’. ‘Being resilient’ means when things happen in our life which we find tricky or challenging, we find ways to cope with them.

Please watch this short video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WyR4AqRweY

In the film, the little sheep is unhappy because his lovely woolly coat has been cut off and his friends are laughing at him,  but he learns that if he keeps bouncing and dancing, he stops caring so much. He realises that this is going to happen to him every year and he has found a way to cope with it.

Can you think of times in your life when you have felt ‘up’ or when you have felt ‘down’?

Feeling ‘up’ might be when your adult collects you at the end of school, you are playing a really fun game with a friend, you receive a fantastic gift, you are watching your favourite programme, its your favourite dinner etc.

Feeling ‘down’  might be when you have quarrelled with a friend or sibling, you felt left out of a game, you’ve hurt yourself in the playground, you are missing someone etc.

Draw two pictures : one showing a time when you have felt ‘down’, try to show where you are and what you are feeling, Think about how your face and body would look. Then draw another picture showing a time when you felt ‘up’ and happy. Again, try to show what you are doing and how you are feeling.

Please bring your pictures into school and we will display them.
