P2B Reflective Friday 13.09.24

Hello families,

Welcome to issue 4 of the 2024/25 P2B Bouncing Bunnies Blog!

An Apology

This past Monday there was a loose parts session I had not communicated to you. This was simply because I had misread the timetable. I apologise for this and hope that clothes did not come home too sandy and wet. I have now amended my calendar and will include the next 2 sessions here going forwards. The next session is now Thursday 19th September and will be followed on Monday 30th September. Again my apologies for that miscommunication.

Timetables, Dates and Reminders

  • PE is on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
  • Our next loose parts session is on Thursday 19th September
  • Our following Loose Parts session is on Monday 30th of September.
  • Miss Kelly takes the class on Wednesdays.
  • We have a short class show and tell session each Tuesday focused on achievements and souvenirs of special experiences.
  • Your child needs a spare change of clothes in school in case of spills or getting caught in the rain etc. If your child is wearing these home one day can we have a replacement the next day.
  • We have a rotating list of class responsibilities each week. One of these is our librarian. As well as looking after our class reading books the librarian will bring in from home, or choose from the class library, a favourite book for Mr Bennett to read at story time on Fridays.
  • Our shared area is always in need of clean and dry cardboard boxes etc for junk modelling. Skip the recycling and bring yours in (no packaging from dairy products or nut products for the safety of those area users with allergies please.) A big thanks to all who have contributed. Please keep it coming. And a special thank you again to Robyn and family who collected another large haul of junk modelling supplies and all our other contributors.
  • If you have not returned your KIC form can we ask that it is returned ASAP as we cannot take trips and walks off of school grounds without them.
  • Reading books will be going out from next week. Reading books coming home on a Friday is to showcase their reading work to you.

Trip out- Volunteers Sought

As a finale to our houses and homes and information handling we are considering a local area walk to survey the types of homes in the local area. We will need to have all our KIC forms (the personal details forms) returned so if yours is outstanding please rush that back in.

We are hoping that this will take place on one of the next two Wednesdays, probably around 9.30am. If you have some Wednesday availability and would like to come to support the class then please send a message to school detailing that availability and we will contact interested parents to confirm.

Literacy

Our class sound focus this week was on igh and -y digraphs. We saw some fabulous rainbow writing on Wednesday of words including night, sight and light. Some groups also were working on CVC words van leg and jam and on revising digraphs th and wh.

Maths and Numeracy

In addition to our SEAL sessions we have been looking at Information Handling. We did more work on Venn diagrams this week and worked on adding intersections. There was some fabulous sorting and understanding shown.

Play

Some of the class were building high and made a very tall tower using marble run supports. We also carried on with building buildings and had a good time at loose parts.

Health and Wellbeing

In PE this week we have tried some throwing and catching ball skills.

The Mr Bennett Bit

I was again really impressed with the amazing way the class tackled the Venn diagrams and sorted the objects into a range of amazing groups. There has been some really good progress and effort going into writing this week with everybody working hard to follow our non negotiables and star steps (Capital letter, full stop, finger spacing).

Have a fabulous LONG weekend Bouncing Bunnies

Mr Bennett.

Please name all items of clothing. I still have 3 un- named and unclaimed cardis.

Please accept my apologies that I forgot to send home the Card design templates today. If you wish your child to complete one at home please feel free to let them do their design on A4 paper and return it to school no later than Tuesday morning, I can then attach it to the relevant template here. There is no obligation to create a design at home. See previous information sent via homelink.

Please check this blog every Friday as we will share the learning from the week. We would encourage you to look at it with your child so that they can talk to you about their experiences in class. The blog will also include this week’s ‘homework’ activities.

We may also share other information via the blog during the week, so you may wish to set up an alert for new posts.

Our learning this week

Here are some photographs of us developing our skills through our independent learning opportunities and experiences this week. Please take time to share these photographs with your child so they can share their learning with you.

Literacy focus

This week we have been learning to recognise and begin to write the graphemes i and n

Please see the Homework section of the blog for this week’s tasks.

When revising these sounds at home please always use the pure sound of the letter (e.g. sssssss and not suh or the letter name Ess ). As we begin to use our knowledge of letter sounds to blend and build words to read and write, not using the correct pure sound can make things tricky for us. If you would like further explanation please just ask at the door.

Our detailed drawing and story telling prompt this week was the story “My big shouting day”

Maths and numeracy

In P1 we use the SEAL programme ( Stages of Early Arithmetical Learning) which promotes number literacy. Pupils will be learning skills and strategies appropriate to their current stage of development. This includes ( but is not limited to) recognising numerals to 10, 20 and beyond; counting forwards and backwards in sequence; counting objects with accurate 1-1 correspondence; ascribing numerosity to random arrays, spatial and finger patterns; counting two seen/unseen collections; describing and creating equal groups; partitioning patterns and numbers.

Other areas of the Curriculum

.

In PE we continue to play games designed to help us follow instructions and take turns as well as mastering developmentally appropriate gross motor skills such as hopping, skipping, jumping with both feet together, ascending and descending stairs.

PE days are Wednesday and Thursday. Children should come to school dressed ready to participate as we will not change clothes in school -e.g joggers/leggings/shorts and a T shirt with a Buckstone jumper on top.

As far as the weather will allow , Thursday PE will take place outdoors until October so outdoor shoes on that day would ideally be trainers if possible..

Looking ahead to next week

Holiday Monday

Loose parts learning on Friday

Homework

Literacy.

Spelling homework should ideally be done in several short sessions across the week . (5-10 minutes 4 times a week will have a huge impact)

Adult write the lowercase letters s, a, t and p, i and n on individual pieces of paper ( or can use magnetic letters if you have them)

Task 1.

Using the letter cards, the adult can build the following words

  • sat
  • pat
  • at
  • tap
  • pin
  • pan
  • nap
  • nip
  • ( challenge spelling words) pants, past

The child should pronounce each sound as the pure sound, then blend the sounds together to read the word.

Task 2

The adult should say one of the spelling words and the child uses the cards to build the word by fining the sound at the start, the sound in the middle, the sound at the end.

You may wish to keep the letter cards you make as we will be adding more sounds for spelling homework next week.

Other literacy activities

Play this game on a phone or tablet. Choose the ‘initial sounds’ option first please .

Numeracy

All children acquire numeracy skills at different rates, so the homework activities are skills to practise. If your child finds it easy, increase the level of challenge by adjusting the range of number (eg, work within 10, up to 20, up to 50 etc)

  • say the number AFTER a given number ( What comes after 7 ?) Children should answer quickly without the need to count from 1
  • say the number BEFORE a given number
  • explore teen numbers. e.g 11 = 10 and 1, 12 = 10 and 2. 13 is ten and how many more ?
  • count forwards and backwards
  • count a random collection of moveable or fixed items accurately with 1-1 correspondence.

Life Skills

  • Learn to turn sleeves the right way out
  • Learn your address

P1R Reflective Friday 13-09-24

Literacy

This week we have been learning to recognise and begin to write the graphemes i and n

When practicing these sounds at home, please use the pure sound of each letter. As we start blending and building words to read and write, using the correct pure sounds is important to avoid confusion. If you need further explanation, feel free to speak to one of us at the end of the day.

MATHS AND NUMERACY

This week we have continued our focus of the following:

  • Recognising numerals up to 10, 20, and beyond
  • Counting in both forward and backward sequences
  • Counting objects with precise one-to-one correspondence
  • Identifying and understanding quantities in random arrays, spatial arrangements, and finger patterns
  • Counting two sets of items, whether visible or hidden
  • Describing and creating equal groups
  • Partitioning numbers and patterns

Our goal is to establish a solid foundation in numeracy through these targeted activities.

P2D Reflective Friday 13.09.24

Dear Parents,

We hope you had a great week.

Information

  • We are planning to do a short local walk to look at the houses and homes in our community on Wednesday 18th September at 9.30 if you think you will be able to help please contact the school office. At the moment we only have one volunteer; we will not be able to go ahead if we don’t have more. It would be a short walk so we should be back before 10.30. Thank you for your help.
  • Today your child is taking home a blank Christmas card if you wish to do one at home for the PTA fundraiser. Please return them to school by Tuesday 17th September if you wish to order it. Please read the instructions carefully.
  • Loose Parts on Thursday 19th.
  • Local walk on Wednesday 18th.

This is a summary of our learning this week:

Literacy

This week we have introduced the -igh and -y sounds . As in ‘light’ and ‘my”. We know that when the sound is, usually, in the middle of the word it will be the igh pattern and when it is at the end of the word it will be the y . Here is the visual prompt we have been using in class

We have started to work on tricky words from block 3: any, many and water.

It would be very helpful if your children practice to read and write these words.

Please also revise the ones from block 1 and 2.

In writing we are learning to write a set of instructions. This week we have been learning how to cross the road. This will help us on our discovery walk around the local area next Wednesday. We have focused on using words of order and bossy verbs.

At story time we have worked on predictions and fluency. Reading books will go home on Friday next week.

Ideas for learning at home

– Please continue to read stories to your child at home. Building on our work from story time this week, can they predict what is going to happen in the story based on the information they have or on previous experiences?

-Please continue to encourage your child to read at home.

– Ask your child to write the words below

igh words light, night, tight, high

y words my, sky, shy, by

Ask them to write the igh /y sound with a different colour than the rest of the sounds in the word.

Handwriting: numbers 5 , 6 and 7.

Numeracy and Maths

We have been learning to add using a number line as a strategy for some (other children have been working on bigger numbers and using other strategies like adding tens and units, etc). We have continued to work on holding a number in our head then counting forwards (for addition)

We have done our final work on data handling: tally marks, block graphs and Carroll diagrams.

Ideas for learning at home:

  • Ask your child to add two numbers together. For some, this might be with two single digits, for others it could be a 2 digit number plus a 1 digit number. For example 34 + 4. Encourage your child to put the biggest number on the number line first and then add the other one by counting the jumps from that number. Eg 2 + 9: we start on the 9 in the number line and then jump 2 times ( 9 to 10 and 10 to 11) the answer is the number were we landed.
  • Please continue to work on number formation. Number 5 and 6 have been a bit tricky!

Other areas

Expressive Arts

We have made our Christmas cards.

PE

We have continued to develop ball control with our feet.

HWB

We have read the book: Standing up to racism. We had a very interesting discussion about this book. We talked about our heritage. Please if you would like to share with the class information about your family’s heritage we would love to hear from you (Please contact Mrs de Bonrostro via school office email or at the door at the end of the day).

French

We have learned how to describe our feelings which has linked to our work on Colour Monster. For example, Ca va? Ca va bien.

STEM

We had a fantastic time on Monday at Loose Parts.

We hope you have a lovely long weekend! (Remember there is no school on Monday!)

Literacy

Our class sound focus this week was on Ee and Ea digraphs. We discussed how ai tends to appear in the middle of words like pain, train, chair and tail. We also looked at how ay tends to appear at the end of words like pay, play, stay and hay.

Maths and Numeracy

In addition to our SEAL sessions we have been looking at Information Handling. Ms Kelly has had the children taking tallies and making bar graphs. Meanwhile Mr Bennett took the bunnies outside this week for some outdoor learning about Venn Diagrams.

Topic Play

In class this week we have continued to see many kinds of house and home built.

We also had some spontaneous focus on aliens and space ships inspired by our houses and homes mention of farm houses.

Health and Wellbeing

In PE this week we have tried some football skills around dribbling.

We have begun our feelings study of “The Colour Monster”. We had some excellent pictures of emotions.

The Mr Bennett Bit

I was really impressed with the amazing way the class tackled the Venn diagrams and sorted the objects into such amazing groups.

Have a fabulous weekend Bouncing Bunnies

Please name all items of clothing, but crucially cardigans, sweatshirts and coats. The children frequently remove cardigans and sweatshirts in the classroom/gym hall, and it can be impossible to reunite them the rightful owner if they are unnamed. Similarly for coats which are often left behind in the playground – if it is named it means it can be taken directly to class.

The un-named grey TU cardigan (age 3) remained unclaimed so has gone to the general lost property box . We now also have a purple sweatshirt fabric cardi, from Asda ( aged 4/5). This will make its way to general lost property on Monday.

Please check this blog every Friday as we will share the learning from the week. We would encourage you to look at it with your child so that they can talk to you about their experiences in class. The blog will also include this week’s ‘homework’ activities

We may also share other information via the blog during the week, so you may wish to set up an alert for new posts.

As part of our ‘ My School in Buckstone’ topic, we went on a walk round the local area. We have also been discussing what the word ‘address’ means and finding out who knows their address

We explored the effect of wet ground on chalk. Lots of great vocabulary was used and we discussed colour mixing, dissolving , changing textures and lots more.

Looking ahead to next week

We have the Evening news photographer on Tuesday. Those pupils who have been denied permission for their photograph to be taken will not be included .

Loose parts learning on Wednesday.

P2D Reflective Friday 6.09.24

Dear Parents/Carers,

We hope you had a nice week.

Important information

  • Loose parts on Monday 9th September.
  • Please remember to label all your child’s items.
  • Remember to bring a snack for break time.
  • We are planning to do a short local walk to look at the houses and homes in our community on Wednesday 18th September at 9.30 if you think you will be able to help please contact the school office.

Here is a summary of our learning this week

Literacy

Phonics: We have been learning two new vowel diagraphs -ee- and -ea-. Please see  below the picture that we are using in class to remind us of the sound.

Reading: We have continued to read in class. We are practicing fluency and prediction.

At story time we have been reading traditional fairy tales.

Writing: We are continuing to practice how to write instructions. This week we have written instructions about how to blow a bubble.

Spelling: We have learned the words two, only and over from block 3.

Handwriting: We have been practicing how to write numbers from 1 to 4. We have noticed that a few children are reversing numbers ( which is common at this age). However we need to continue to practice the right formation.

Ideas for home learning:

  • Please continue to practice reading on a daily basis at home. Some children have lost fluency over the summer.
  • Practice to write words with ee and ea: bee, seed, sheep, sheet, deep, queen, teeth, cheek, eel, read, dream, sea, lead, teach, reach, cheap, leap, peach, year, etc.
  • Revise the words (read and write)  from block three that we have worked on so far: two, over, only, so, every and very. Please also revise the ones from block 1 and 2.
  • Read to your child every night, if possible. The benefits of reading to children include helping them build language skills, learn about the world, and develop empathy and emotional awareness. Reading together also provides an opportunity for parents and children to connect.

Numeracy and Maths

SEAL: We have been practicing counting forwards and backwards starting and stopping at different points to 10, 30, 50 , 100 ( and more for some).

Maths: We have continued to learn about collecting data and interpreting collected data. We have learned what is a Carroll diagram and we have sorted out items using it, we have used tally marks to collect information about types of houses.

Ideas for home learning

Counting Forwards:

  • Counting forwards and backwards starting from different points (not from one) 1-100, 30, 20, 10.
  • Try to work on crossing the ‘10 number’ (10, 20, 30, 40 etc). For example, when going forwards – Say ‘start at 8 and keep going until I say stop’. Stop the child around 12/13, you want to see if they can cross from the 1s to the teens. Same applies with bigger numbers check if they can cross from the teens to the 20s, the 20s to the 30s etc.
  • Number after • ‘What number comes after 4?’ If they have to count all the way up to the number from one they could work on producing it quickly without having to count that – it’s a really important skill – start 1-10, 11-20,21-30 etc.

Counting Backwards

  • Counting backwards (very important for subtraction) same as above try to start at all different numbers and see can the child cross over the 10, 20, 30, 40 etc. Start at 13 and count backwards until I say stop’
  • Counting backwards is much harder for children (it’s like an adult trying to say the alphabet backwards…have a go!), so it takes longer to achieve fluency with it.

Number before

  • ‘What number comes before 8?’ If they have to count all the way up to the number from one they could work on that – it’s a really important skill – start 1-10, 11-20,21-30 etc.

Other areas

IDL:

Social Studies

We are learning about different types of houses in our community and beyond: semidetached, detached, bungalow, tenements, flats, etc. We have looked at their characteristics and identified in which type of house we live in. We have gathered data of in which types of houses we all live in and used our knowledge on tally marks to collect this information.

French

We are revising numbers from 0 to 10. We say Bon jour every morning to our peers.

Health and Wellbeing

PE:

We are learning to practise and improve skills to develop ball control: to stop the ball with our foot in a controlled way and to pass the ball using the inside of our foot. We have also have played some games. We do love our warm ups and cool downs with music!

Everyday we have the chance to do a wellbeing check in: we use the colours from the story of the colour monster to say how we feel, and Mrs de Bonrostro does a check in with us when needed.

Independent learning

Team work, turn taking, problem solving, etc.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Mrs de Bonrostro
