P1B Reflective Friday 20.1.23

Good afternoon.

Literacy

This week, we learned the ‘v’ and ‘y’ sounds. To make the ‘v’ sound, we put our top teeth over our bottom lip and it almost sounds like buzzing! We can hear the vvvvvibrations. We practised building and blending words that start with the ‘v’ sound, learned all about the violin from Mrs Cross and design our own ‘van’ for writing! We created ‘y’ with all things yellow and did some yoga with a Chinese New Year theme. This week, we also explored our reading books. We used language such as title, author and page number. We counted the words on each page and followed along with our finger, even when someone else was reading!

Maths and numeracy

This week, we continued with our SEAL work. We worked on counting backwards from 20 and played Splat to practise recalling the number before for 1-30. We also practised our number formation for 1-20.

Other Areas

This week, we continued with our Scottish Country Dancing, practising clapping to the beat and counting to 8. We practised the Gay Gordons again and parts of the Grand Old Duke of York. We also looked at some of the beautiful scenery we are lucky enough to have in Scotland such as the beaches, mountains and islands.

To do at home

Numeracy: recognising the numbers 1-20 (the trickiest ones are 12, 13 and 20), counting backwards from 20, writing the ‘teen’ numbers with the 1 first and remember it’s ‘teen’ not ‘ty’ for 13-19!

Literacy: being able to recognise and write our tricky words (please look out for the green sheet in the purple folder), blending 3-4 letter words by saying the sounds slowly in one big breath

General: being able to take off jumpers and zip up coats

General Information

We have loose parts on Tuesday next week, please make sure your child is dressed appropriately.

Please make sure your child has a spare change of clothes in school.

Please ensure your child is coming into school with a waterbottle.

Have a great weekend,

P1M Reflective Friday 20.1.23

Hello everyone, this is what we have been learning this week:

NUMERACY

This week we have been:

Writing the numerals 1-10 correctly

Counting backwards from 20

Counting forwards to 30

Naming the number which comes before a given number

Counting a collection beyond 10, making sure we are counting carefully

Recognising numerals to 20

Using our fingers to keep track of a sequence of claps

LITERACY

This week we introduced the sounds v and y. We thought of words beginning with those sounds and learned songs and actions to help us remember them. Mrs Bailey brought in her violin for V and played to the class (Mrs Munro has no musical talents and brought a yoghurt for y!). In small groups we used magnetic letters to try to blend sounds together to read and build words.

We are continuing our  weekly dictation using the sounds and words we have been learning in class.

We have been enjoying reading the Biff, Chip and Kipper books in our literacy groups. We are beginning to develop comprehension skills, trying to decode words and are encouraging the children to think about the story and predict what might happen next.

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

Please practise counting backwards from 20 and recognition of the numbers 1-20.

Please cut out the flashcards your child has brought home today and use them to help your child to recognise the sounds and build words.

We are revising the Block 1 tricky words in class. These words can be quite challenging for the children to remember. Please continue to help your child to revise recognition and spelling of these words using the -look, say, cover, write check strategy.

Your child has brought home a word wall of vocabulary from the reading books used in school. Please practise these words with your child, reading a few words at a time.

EXPRESSIVE ARTS

As part of our focus on Scotland we were learning about the artist Joan Eardley. We learned about the way she used materials from her subject’s lives to stick in the background of her paintings and the different implements she used to paint with. We looked at some of her paintings on the smartboard and discussed the ones we liked the best. The children will have the opportunity to try out some of Eardley’s techniques.

Here is our artwork inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh:

We learned Ally Bally Bee together this week and will be learning some more Scottish songs throughout the term.

PE

We continued to learn the Gay Gordons and to dance in time to the music.

INDEPENDENT LEARNING

Some examples of learning through play taking place this week:

OUTDOOR LEARNING/ LOOSE PARTS

We braved the cold weather and worked really well with our friends across the stage to enjoy our loose parts play.

Have a lovely weekend.

P1M Reflective Friday 13.1.23

Hello everyone, this is what we have been learning this week:

NUMERACY

In our groups we have been learning to identify numbers as dot patterns, count a number of movements or sounds, saying the number word before and after a number, counting items in two rows.

LITERACY

This week we introduced the sounds w and j. We thought of words beginning with those sounds and learned songs and actions to help us remember them. In small groups we used magnetic letters to try to blend sounds together to read and build words.

We have started a weekly dictation where the children have to write down a given sound or  words into a jotter.

This week we started looking at reading books in class. As well as discussing the story and thinking about what might happen, we tried to read some of the words, counted the words on each page and looked for any tricky words we might recognise.

HWB

We had a visit from Isla Ross who spoke to the class about friendships, being kind and about how we are all different.

We listened really well to the story and were able to show our understanding with the answers we gave to Isla’s questions.

EXPRESSIVE ARTS

As part of our focus on Scotland we were learning about Charles Rennie Mackintosh. We looked at some of his designs and created our own versions for a display.

PE

As part of our focus on Scotland we began to learn about Scottish country dancing. We clapped and skipped in time to the music and began to learn the basics of the Gay Gordons dance.

Some examples of learning through play taking place this week:

OUTDOOR LEARNING/ LOOSE PARTS

Next week Loose Parts will take place on Thursday 19.1.23. Please dress your child in appropriate clothing.

THANK YOU

Thank you very much  for donating socks, underwear and tissues, it is very much appreciated.

P1B Reflective Friday 13.1.23

Good afternoon and Happy New Year! Welcome to P1B’s first blog of 2023!

Literacy

This week, we learned the ‘w’ sound. We practised building and blending words that start with the ‘w’ sound, investigated some worms in the classroom, drew lovely pictures looking out windows and did some weaving on a wet and windy winter Wednesday! In writing, we all had a go at writing ‘I got wet…’. We got wet in swimming pools, puddles, dragon pools and in the garden! This week, we also learned the ‘j’ sound. We found items beginning with ‘j’ around the room, coloured jellyfish and built words that start with ‘j’.

Maths and numeracy

This week, we continued with our SEAL work. We had a recap of what we had learnt before the Christmas holidays and moved on from Chapter 5 to Chapter 6. Some of the activities we did at the teaching table included recognising and identifying numbers 1-20, saying the next number after for 1-30 and the next number before for 1-20.

Other Areas

This week, we started a topic on Scotland. We found out about Scotland’s place in the world, and how we live in a community which is in a city which is in a country which is in a continent which is on the Earth…phew! We looked at different tartans and then weaved our own for our school display board. This was great for our fine motor skills too! In PE, we did Scottish Country Dancing. We learnt the Gay Gordons and had lots of fun! We will continue with our Scotland topic next week. We continued our Scottish Country Dancing with Mrs Conlin on Thursday, and Mrs Imrie came to watch! She was really impressed!

a pencil case!
We had new lego in the classroom this week. There has been lots of great problem solving and roleplay!

Good afternoon!

Literacy

This week, we revised our sounds, and created lovely pieces of writing. We created melted snowmen! We copied ‘My snowman….because’ to practise our letter formation, and then had a go at hearing the sounds in and sounding out ‘melted’. We used our art and cutting skills to create our melted snowman picture!

Maths and numeracy

This week, we introduced symmetry. We completed tasks at the teaching table, made symmetrical numicon boards and created symmetrical paintings with Mrs Conlin. It was amazing what we saw!

Other Areas

We listened to the story of The Nutcracker and did some dancing! We pretended to be clockwork dolls, nutcrackers, monkeys and snowflakes. In pairs, we all performed a snowflake dance to the rest of the class that we choreographed ourselves!

We had a fantastic time at the Christmas Party! We played games, had our yummy snacks and then had a surprise visit from Santa! Pictures below.

P1M Reflective Friday 9.12.22

Hello everyone, this is what we have been learning this week:

NATIVITY

A very big well done to all of Primary One for a wonderful Nativity. The children worked so hard to learn their lines and when to say them, to learn the words of the songs and to speak in loud voices in front of an audience. We did 5 performances in total, and the children really improved their ability to change into their costumes independently. Fantastic effort from everyone. Thanks to all the parents who supplied coat hangers, hair bands and named bags and for being such an appreciative audience.

Here

NUMERACY

In our groups we have been learning to identify numbers as dot patterns, count a number of movements or sounds, saying the number word before and after a number, counting items in two rows.

We have continued to look at pattern in our play: decorating a Christmas tree using baubles and continuing a pattern using shapes.

Next week we will be looking at symmetry.

LITERACY

This week we have been focussing on the tricky words we have learned so far. The children have been trying to recognise and read these words as well as use them in their writing.

This week we were writing about decorating a Christmas tree and also how we felt about performing in the Nativity.

Please use the blue word cards your child has brought home today  to practise reading and writing the tricky  words. The children are finding these words challenging so any extra practice would be helpful. After the holidays we will be moving on to the Block 2 tricky words.

OUTDOOR LEARNING/ LOOSE PARTS

Although it was a bit chilly on Thursday afternoon we enjoyed playing outside with our friends across the stage and exploring how the snow and frost had altered the sand and earth.

Here is a selection of photographs from our learning this week:

Enjoy the weekend everyone.

P1B Reflective Friday 9.12.22

Good afternoon!

Literacy

This week, we played Bingo to revise our sounds. We split our whiteboard into 4 and chose 4 sounds. When we heard a word starting with one of our sounds, we crossed that one off. Even if we weren’t one of the ones to get ‘Bingo!’, we still did very well at listening to the initial sound!

Maths and numeracy

This week, we introduced pattern. We completed patterns based on object, size and colour. We will continue this next week, and also introduce symmetry.

Nativity

A huge well done to everybody for their fantastic performances in the Nativity! A few tired faces at the end of the week just shows how hard we worked and how good our focus was! This week, we performed to all the children in the school (Nursery and P2-7), all the members of staff and our families. Here are some photos of us in our costumes before Monday and Wednesday’s performances, as well as some photos of our other learning this week.

General Information

Please return your child’s learning story as soon as possible. If you don’t wish to leave a comment, please then put your signature in the box so we know that an adult has seen it.

Have a great weekend,

P1B Reflective Friday 2.12.22

Good afternoon!

Literacy

This week, we learned the k and ck sounds. We found things around the classroom starting with k and ending with ck and made ‘kicking kings’. We worked on our k letter formation as it is a tricky sound to draw! Step 1: long line down, step 2: halfway back up and loop, step 3: give it the kick.

We practised blending CVC words by playing a game with a partner. For our writing time this week, we drew pictures of the Nativity for our classroom window decorations. We decided we wanted the backing in front of our pictures to make them green! Some of us during learning through play decided to use different resources to spell our names!

Numeracy

This week, we practised answering sums up to 20 and using a number line. We also learned how to write an addition sum by using the plus and equals signs.

counting to 100 together

Health and Wellbeing

In PE this week, we practised our literacy with listening to the middle sound of words to know how to move around the room. We also made up our own versions of tig that we played! During our PE time, we did some movement and drama too to help us with our Nativity.

General Information

Your child’s Learning Story is in their purple folder. Please fill in the parent comment and return it by the end of next week.

Thanks to those who have brought a named bag and/or hanger for the Nativity costume. Please bring one in on Monday as we will be wearing our costumes for our dress rehearsals to the rest of the school.

We have Loose Parts (messy play) on Thursday 8th December.

Have a great weekend and I am looking forward to seeing some of you at the Nativity performances!
