P2D Reflective Friday 11.10.24

Dear Parents/ Carers,

We cannot believe that our first term in P2 has come to an end. It has been a fabulous term full of learning and fun.

Thank you for the generous donations of pens and notebooks. The children loved it and has created an interest on independent writing in different classroom areas. Thank you!

We hope you all have a nice break.

Important information

  • Children will start the new term on Tuesday 22nd October.
  • We are not sending reading books over the October break. Please if you have any school books at home return them as soon as possible.
  • Please ensure your child brings a jacket/coat every day to school.
  • Thank you for your support in emptying the purple folders each day.
  • A reminder to name all items of clothing and shoes, and to check names on items brought home in case your child accidentally acquires a jumper belonging to someone else.

Summary of our learning

This week we have been working on the vowel diagraphs oi and oy: as in coin and boy. We loved making toys.

This is the symbol that we have used to remember the sounds:

This week we have done a revision of all the tricky words in block 3. Please continue to practice these at home over the holidays.

At writing we have been working on how to write the end of a story.

In handwriting we have worked on the letters a and c in cursive.

We had a visit from the mobile Library and we were able to choose new books.

We have started our work on Place Value.

We are working on our 100 square: counting forwards and backwards from a given number in 1s ( 2s, 3s and 4s for some): looking at the columns and working out the patterns in them.

PE

We have continued to work on our pre-rugby skills: pop pass and spin pass.

RSHP

We have discussed what is a friend and what it is being a friend.

French

We have learned to name colours.

Independent learning: in this section you will be able to see how the children are exploring different skills in an independent way ( no adult is interfering: the adults support and extend their play). The children are able to transfer skills that they have learned at different times ( in school and at home) to their play and they are able to show skills that we wouldn’t be able to see otherwise.

Ideas for learning at home

Literacy

  • Practice the cursive letters that we have learned so far and try to write words with them: l, i, t, x, z, c, a
  • Write the words: boil, coil, foil, soil, toil, coin, join, boy, toy, joy, Roy. You can make them using magnets, with letter stamps, etc.
  • Can you make a diary of the holiday week? draw what did you enjoy each day and/or write a sentence to explain your picture.
  • Practice the tricky words: please look at the sheet with activities that it was sent home last week.

Numeracy and Maths

Other areas

  • Go for walks and observe signs of Autumn. Make drawing using different media of what you have seen on your walks.
  • Observe the moon phases and record them in a diary. They could bring it after the holidays and see if all our findings are the same.
  • Enjoy a well deserved break!

We hope you have a nice break,

Mrs de Bonrostro

P1b reflective Friday 11.10.24

Please check this blog every Friday as we will share the learning from the week. We would encourage you to look at it with your child so that they can talk to you about their experiences in class. The blog will also include this week’s ‘homework’ activities.

We may also share other information via the blog during the week, so you may wish to set up an alert for new posts.

Our learning this week

Here are some photographs of us developing our skills through our independent learning opportunities and experiences this week. Please take time to share these photographs with your child so they can share their learning with you.

Literacy focus

This week we have focussed on the sounds made by the graphemes r and h For most children, the skill of blending sounds together to read a word is trickier than building it themselves and many of us still need to master this skill. Please continue to support your child at home to practise.

When revising these sounds at home please always use the pure sound of the letter (e.g. sssssss and not suh or the letter name Ess ). As we begin to use our knowledge of letter sounds to blend and build words to read and write, not using the correct pure sound can make things tricky for us. If you would like further explanation please just ask at the door.

Our storytelling this week was free choice as we were doing the first of our ‘Big Writing” assessment pieces. We look at the pupils’ physical skills in pencil control and pencil grip as well as their stage of development in producing detailed and representative drawing, alonside their oral skills in retelling the ‘story’ of their drawing.

Maths and numeracy

We have had a focus on measuring and measurement skills and vocabulary this week. Please see the homework section below for ideas on how you can support your child at home.

In P1 we use the SEAL programme ( Stages of Early Arithmetical Learning) which promotes number literacy. Pupils will be learning skills and strategies appropriate to their current stage of development. This includes ( but is not limited to) recognising numerals to 10, 20 and beyond; counting forwards and backwards in sequence; counting objects with accurate 1-1 correspondence; ascribing numerosity to random arrays, spatial and finger patterns; counting two seen/unseen collections; describing and creating equal groups; partitioning patterns and numbers.

Other areas of the Curriculum

.

We have begun to learn to say the names of colours in French.

We have looked at the Rights Respecting Schools activity on the book ‘Me and My Fear’

PE days are Wednesday and Thursday. Children should come to school dressed ready to participate as we will not change clothes in school -e.g joggers/leggings/shorts and a T shirt with a Buckstone jumper on top.

Looking ahead to next week

Have a great week off. We will look forward to welcoming pupils back on Tuesday 22nd

Homework

Literacy

Spelling homework should ideally be done in several short sessions across the week . (5-10 minutes 4 times a week will have a huge impact)

Adult write the lowercase letters m, e, s, a, t and p, i and n on individual pieces of paper ( or can use magnetic letters if you have them)

Task 1.

Using the letter cards, the adult can build the following words ( also refer to previous weeks’ word lists for extra practice)

As a challenge, you could ask your child to write the word by listening to the sounds, recalling the grapheme for each sound and building the word.

  • hat
  • hip
  • hit
  • hen
  • ran
  • tar
  • rat
  • rip

The child should pronounce each sound as the pure sound, then blend the sounds together to read the word. This is the skill that most children find the trickiest.

Task 2

The adult should say one of the spelling words and the child uses the cards to build the word by finding the sound at the start, the sound in the middle, the sound at the end.

You may wish to keep the letter cards you make as we will be adding more sounds for spelling homework next week.

Other literacy activities

Play this game on a phone or tablet. Choose the ‘initial sounds’ option first please .

Play “robot I spy” Adult spies an object and breaks down the pronunciation, child blends the sounds together to guess the object that has been spotted – e.g. I spy a ‘v – a – n’

Play ‘ which sound is where ? ‘ Adult says a cvc word then asks the child to isolate which sound they can hear in the middle/at the end/ at the start. Children are used to saying which sound a letter starts with, but generally less comfortable identifying middle and ending sounds.

Numeracy/Maths

Support our learning in school about measurement by using the following vocabulary in discussions. compare, height, length, heavy/heavier/heaviest, long/longer etc , tall, more, less.

Every day activities can help to develop understanding of measurement such as adding measuring jugs to the bath toys, bake a cake, measuring things around the house or garden with footsteps/handspans, comparing heights of family members or toys etc. Get creative.

There is also a game here which we have been using in school which your child may want to show you. Choose the ‘game’ option – then the blue dice lead to the subitising activity. We also enjoy watching this short video which helps us to practise the subitising skill in different ways

All children acquire numeracy skills at different rates, so the homework activities are skills to practise. If your child finds it easy, increase the level of challenge by adjusting the range of number (eg, work within 10, up to 20, up to 50 etc)

  • say the number AFTER a given number ( What comes after 7 ?) Children should answer quickly without the need to count from 1
  • say the number BEFORE a given number
  • explore teen numbers. e.g 11 = 10 and 1, 12 = 10 and 2. 13 is ten and how many more ?
  • count forwards and backwards
  • count a random collection of moveable or fixed items accurately with 1-1 correspondence.

Life Skills

  • Practise folding paper from corner to corner
  • Learn to turn sleeves the right way out
  • Learn your address
P1 Red Smeds

Reflective Friday 11-10

LITERACY

This week we introduced two new sounds: r and h

When revising these sounds at home please always use the pure sound of the letter. (Please don’t add an i to the sound to make mi). As we begin to blend and build words to read and write, not using the correct pure sound can make things tricky for us. If you would like further explanation, please speak to one of us at the end of the day.

Home learning options:

Task 1

Adults build/write the words and have children build and blend the sounds.

sat

pat

pin

sit

tip

sip

tap

tan

pan

man

hen

net

mat

rat

hat

The child should pronounce each sound as the pure sound, then blend the sounds together to read the words.

Task 2:

The adult should say one of the spelling words and the child uses the cards to build the word by finding the sound at the start, the sound in the middle, the sound at the end.

Please keep the cards you have made as we will be adding more sounds in the future.

You could play this game using a phone or a tablet. Please choose the ‘initial sounds’ option first.

MATHS AND NUMERACY

In P1 we use the SEAL programme (Stages of Early Arithmetical Learning) which promotes number literacy. Pupils will be learning skills and strategies appropriate to their current stage of development. This includes(but is not limited to) recognising numerals to 10, 20 and beyond; counting forwards and backwards in sequence; counting objects with accurate 1-1 correspondence; ascribing numerosity to random arrays, spatial and finger patterns; counting two seen/unseen collections; describing and creating equal groups; partitioning patterns and numbers.

Things to do at home

All children acquire numeracy skills at different rates so the homework activities are skills to practise. If your child finds it easy, increase the level of challenge by adjusting the range of number (eg work within 10, up to 20, up to 50 etc).

Say the number AFTER  a given number ( what comes after 7?). Children should answer quickly without the need to count from 1.

Say the number BEFORE a given number.

Explore teen numbers. Eg 11 = 10 and 1, 12 = 10 and 2. 13 is 10 and how many more?

Count forwards and backwards.

Count a random collection of moveable or fixed items accurately with 1-1 correspondence.

This week, we expanded our understanding of measurement by using our hands and cubes to measure various objects in our classroom.

Independent learning

The children have been developing their skills through a variety of learning within our classroom and the shared area.

PE

As a class, we have been learning to negotiate space and obstacles safely; with consideration for themselves and others. Demonstrate strength, balance and co-ordination and move energetically, such as running, jumping, hopping, and skipping.

Interdisciplinary learning:

The children continued their learning of our local area. They engaged in an activity of drawing their favourite place in the local area.

Additional things to note:

Please bring in any clean recycling for the children to use in our STEM area.

Please make sure your child has a change of clothes in case they get wet or muddy. Can these items of clothing be named and kept in school in a bag. If your child has to change their clothes and takes the wet/dirty items home, please make sure they are replaced the next day.

We still have a purple jumper which has been left in class for a few days now. It does not have a name on it, please come and ask one of us if you think it might belong to your child.

Any donations of plastic bags would be really useful for taking home artwork or wet clothes, thank you.

We are very happy to speak to parents at the end of the day to discuss any issue concerning your child. We are not able to talk to parents in the morning as we have to supervise the children as they come in ready to start their day. Thank you for your understanding.

Enjoy the October break 😊

Buckstone Primary School, P2B

P2B Reflective Friday 4.10.24

Hello families,

Welcome to the P2B Bouncing Bunnies Blog for Friday 4th of October.

Timetables, Dates and Reminders

  • PE is on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
  • Our next loose parts session is on Wednesday 9th October.
  • Our following Loose Parts session is on Tuesday 29th October.
  • Miss Kelly takes the class on Wednesdays.
  • We have a short show and tell session on Tuesdays focused on achievements and souvenirs of special experiences.
  • Your child needs a spare change of clothes in school in case of spills or getting caught in the rain etc. If your child is wearing these home one day can we have a replacement the next day.
  • We have a rotating list of class responsibilities each week. One of these is our librarian. The Librarian looks after our class reading corner and will bring in from home, or choose from the class library, a favourite book for Mr Bennett to read on Fridays.
  • Our shared area is always in need of clean and dry cardboard boxes etc for junk modelling. Skip the recycling and bring yours in (no packaging from dairy products or nut products for the safety of those area users with allergies please.)
  • Reading books come home on a Friday as a way for the children to showcase their learning to you, not as homework. Please return these on Mondays.
  • Purple Folders: These need to come to school daily as there are often items of paperwork that may be damaged in a standard bag.
  • Next Friday week break up for October break. The children resume on Tuesday October 22nd.

New Starter

We have had a great time this week welcoming Sienna into the class. Lots of the children have very respectfully and responsibly been showing her around the school and introducing our class routines. Many made lovely welcome cards as well. We hope you have had a great week Sienna!

Literacy

Our class sound focus this week was on oo and ew as in moon and chew. We have also revised ee and ea, as in week and beak.

To extend the learning at home be on the lookout for things that have oo and ew, and ee and ea in their name. Also work on making words with sticks, leaves and twigs, or in unusual places, such as with bath crayons.

P7 came to help us with a whole school task in our writing time this week. We were writing about what makes Buckstone brilliant.

Science

We have continued our new topic of Sun, Moon and Stars this week. We looked at moon facts and phases of the moon. If you would like to keep a moon phase diary at home that would be fabulous. There will be a sheet to support this optional extension task in purple folders today. If the night is too cloudy a little cloud symbol instead of a shaded phase is perfect.

Maths and Numeracy

We have been reviewing and extending our knowledge of number bonds again this week . We have also been working on jumping over 1, 2 or 3 numbers forwards and backwards.

Play

Loose parts was great fun as always. With the wet weather we saw a lot of mud kitchens and cook pots filled with “soup”.

Not to be out crafted by the saw a fabulous cinema complex made by some of the boys this week. Also a fabulous ice cream parlour and boat in block play.

The Mr Bennett Bit

It was great meeting all our families at parent consultations and I look forward to sharing the progress at the next round. The children have really enjoyed our topic related story over several lessons this week and last “The Rock That Fell From The Sky” by Jon Klassen. It has been fun seeing their engagement.

In French we learned “Bon Weekend” this week so do have a Bon weekend before we

Fly into another fabulous week on Monday Bouncing Bunnies!

Mr Bennett.

P2D Reflective Friday 4.10.24

Dear Parents/Carers,

We hope you had a nice week. It was lovely to meet you all at parents evenings. If there is anything that you would like to follow up, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Important information

  • Loose parts on Wednesday 9th October.
  • As you might know part of my school remit is PEF ( Pupil Equity Fund). Therefore there will be some days I will be at school but not teaching in class. On Wednesday 9th October Mrs Graham will be teaching the children for this reason.
  • As requested reading books will now go home on Thursdays to allow families more time to work on this at home.
  • Please ensure your child brings a jacket/coat every day to school.
  • Thank you for your support in emptying the purple folders each day.
  • A reminder to name all items of clothing and shoes, and to check names on items brought home in case your child accidentally acquires a jumper belonging to someone else.
  • We would appreciate donations of any unwanted empty or partially used notebooks or diaries (used pages can be removed). Also, any enticing writing implements (i.e., glittery pencils/gel pens/ pencils with feathers etc – anything other than standard school issue type pencils/pens). The children enjoy choosing resources from the table to use in their independent learning.
  • We are looking for small pieces of ‘junk’ for modelling e.g., toothpaste boxes, tea bag boxes, snack bar boxes. The more interesting shapes the better.

Literacy

This week we have been working on the vowel diagraphs oo and ew: as in tooth and chew. We loved making jewels.

This is the symbol that we have used to remember the sounds:

In handwriting we have been working on the cursive letters x and z.

At writing we did our final set of instructions. Now that we are approaching Halloween we have written: How to cast a spell.

Our tricky words this week are: why, find and kind. These are the final words of block 3. We will revise them next week.

Numeracy

We have started to work on subtraction ( from 10, 30, 100). We are using different strategies :

  • we have worked on using our knowledge on number bonds to 10 for subtraction within 20. In P1, children subtracted within 10 by counting back and using number lines. They now subtract within 20 using their knowledge of number bonds. For example, if they know the number bond 7 – 5 = 2, then they know that 17 – 5 = 12.
  • Using a number line. The children are familiar with this strategy and they are using it confidently.

PE

We have started to work on pre- rugby skills. We have worked on “pop- passing”. We have also done games to work on following instructions.

STEM

At our loose parts session we had very interesting discussions when building swings: height, weight, strength of branches,…It was great to see their team work!

IDL

We have continue to work on our Sun, Moon and Stars topic. We have learned about the moon phases and how this happens. We are really enjoying this topic!

Spelling:

  • Your child took yesterday a spelling ideas sheet with the reading book home. As you now know in which spelling block your child is working on, use these ideas to work on the words.
  • Another idea is to play snap. Use 2 sets of cards with the words. Lay out a large piece of paper and a pen in the middle of the table. When the words match, rather than saying the word to win the cards, you have to grab the pen and write the word to win the cards.

Phonics:

  • Find words that have the oo and ew sound.
  • Ask your child to make a book with the words: food, hoof, soon, tool, book, cook, shoot, hook, mood, cool, new, few, pew, chew, dew.
  • Revise all the diagraphs that we have worked on so far: sh, ch, th, wh, ai, ay, ee, ea, igh, y, oa, ow, oo, ew. Write each sound in a post it /card, uncover the sound and the first person who says a word with that sound wins the card; the winner of the game is the person who gets most cards.

Reading:

  • Ask your child to read the reading book to you. Read the book to them afterwards to practice full stops, question marks, etc.
  • Ask questions about the book: Who? When? Why do you think…? What would have happened if…?
  • Read a story a day with your child if you can.

Handwriting

  • If you wish continue to use your Sumdog account. This is a tool for learning but please be mindful of screen time.
  • Practice addition and subtraction to 10, 30, 100.
  • Practise forming the digits 2,3,4,5 and 6 in particular. You could use chalk, coloured pens, paint, anything to keep this fun! This is the correct formation:
  • Observe the moon every night ( or at least twice a week) and record the phase of the moon. Ask your child to draw a picture and ask them which phase of the moon they think it is and why.

Have a lovely weekend!

Thank you for the many positive responses to our survey and the suggestions made. We will discuss these as a school team.

This week we have focussed on the sounds made by the graphemes m and e. For most children, the skill of blending sounds together to read a word is trickier than building it themselves and many of us still need to master this skill.

Our storytelling prompt this week was “My friends”

Maths and numeracy

In P1 we use the SEAL programme ( Stages of Early Arithmetical Learning) which promotes number literacy. Pupils will be learning skills and strategies appropriate to their current stage of development. This includes ( but is not limited to) recognising numerals to 10, 20 and beyond; counting forwards and backwards in sequence; counting objects with accurate 1-1 correspondence; ascribing numerosity to random arrays, spatial and finger patterns; counting two seen/unseen collections; describing and creating equal groups; partitioning patterns and numbers.

Other areas of the Curriculum

.

This week, we have been exploring magnets and learning some elephant facts.

We have begun to learn to say the names of colours in French.

We have looked at the RSHP units on making friends/being kind ( linked here and here for your further information should you wish to follow up at home)

PE days are Wednesday and Thursday. Children should come to school dressed ready to participate as we will not change clothes in school -e.g joggers/leggings/shorts and a T shirt with a Buckstone jumper on top.

As far as the weather will allow , Thursday PE will take place outdoors until October so outdoor shoes on that day would ideally be trainers if possible..

Looking ahead to next week

Loose parts learning on Friday 11th October

Homework

Literacy

Spelling homework should ideally be done in several short sessions across the week . (5-10 minutes 4 times a week will have a huge impact)

Adult write the lowercase letters m, e, s, a, t and p, i and n on individual pieces of paper ( or can use magnetic letters if you have them)

Task 1.

Using the letter cards, the adult can build the following words

  • met
  • map
  • ten
  • pet
  • pen
  • sat
  • pat
  • at
  • tap
  • pin
  • pan
  • nap
  • nip
  • ( challenge spelling words) pants, past ,

The child should pronounce each sound as the pure sound, then blend the sounds together to read the word. This is the skill that most children find the trickiest.

Task 2

The adult should say one of the spelling words and the child uses the cards to build the word by fining the sound at the start, the sound in the middle, the sound at the end.

Numeracy

Practise the skill of subitising. Subitising is the ability to quickly and accurately determine the number of objects in a small group without counting them. arrange a small number of items under a piece of paper, then remove the paper for a few seconds ( not enough time to count) and re-cover. Ask how many were there? Start with regular dice patterns to 6, then extend to organised arrays up to 10, then introduce random arrays.

Explore teen numbers. Eg 11 = 10 and 1, 12 = 10 and 2. 13 is 10 and how many more?

Count forwards and backwards.

Count a random collection of moveable or fixed items accurately with 1-1 correspondence.

We have been practising writing number two, please help your child to practise writing this number at home.

INDEPENDENT LEARNING

The children have been developing their skills through independent learning opportunities in class. Here are just a few photographs of what they have been doing.

PE

In PE we were playing some warmup games and learning to move at different speeds and levels in a designated space. We were thinking about the way different animals move and tried to copy their movements. We worked with a partner and the rest of the class tried to guess which animal we were pretending to be.

LOOSE PARTS

The children are really enjoying loose parts play and are working well with their peers to build, create and investigate. The next day for loose parts will be Friday 11th October. Please can you make sure that your child has clothes that you don’t mind getting wet. Waterproofs and wellies would be ideal but old scruffy clothes will do just as well.

OUTDOOR LEARNING

We enjoyed the autumn sunshine and formed the number two using found objects such as stones, sticks and leaves. We collected different leaves and looked at them on our light box, some of us used the leaves to make pictures and some of us did some leaf rubbing.

FRENCH

We have been learning to say hello and goodbye in French.

We have been trying to learn the words for some colours too.

Jaune – yellow

Bleu- blue

Rouge- red

Vert – green

Violet- purple

Rose – pink

We are singing songs and playing games to help us learn.

OTHER PRIMARY ONE MATTERS

Please bring in any clean recycling for the children to use in our STEM  area.

Please make sure your child has a change of clothes in case they get wet or muddy. Can these items of clothing  be named and kept in school in a bag. If your child has to change their clothes and takes the wet/dirty items home, please make sure they are replaced the next day.

We have a purple jumper which has been left in class for a few days now.

Have a lovely weekend.

P2B Reflective Friday 27.09.24

Hello families,

Welcome the P2B Bouncing Bunnies Blog for Friday 27th of September.

Timetables, Dates and Reminders

  • PE is on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
  • Our next loose parts session is on Monday 30th of September
  • Our following Loose Parts session is on Wednesday 9th October.

Your tempest photo order forms should have gone home yesterday (or today if an appropriate dry bag or purple folder wasn’t available yesterday). The brilliant Mrs George wanted me to say you have until October 10th to order to save on the delivery charge.

Literacy

Our class sound focus this week was on ow and oa as in snow and boat. We have also revised ay and ai, as in bay and rain.

To extend the learning at home be on the lookout for things that have ow and oa, and ay and ai in their name.

We have also done our Big Writing this week and the effort put in was amazing.

Science

We have begun our new topic of Sun, Moon and Stars this week. We looked at Sun facts and we became the Sun Moon and Earth to work out how all three move around.

Maths and Numeracy

We have been moving on with addition this week within 10, 20 and 30. We have also been reviewing our number bonds towards this. Focusing on those number bonds to 10 (1+9, 2+8, 3 + 7, 4 + 6 etc) can be supercharging to our adding and subtracting in class.

Play

P2B put those new blocks to good use this week with a fabulous chocolate factory being built, showing amazing sorting skills.

We have also seen some wonderful designer handbags being made in the area and a lovely dog costume head.

The Mr Bennett Bit

I am looking forward to seeing all our families next week at parent consultations. I was also really impressed with how the children tackled their big writing task this week. When we do big writing we are not allowed to provide support, only encouragement, so as to get an accurate snapshot of your child’s current independent skills. It can be a very emotional day. This week everybody put in an amazing effort and it was a pleasure to see the class achieve so much independently.

Have a fabulous weekend Bouncing Bunnies

Mr Bennett.
