P2D Reflective Friday 14.06.24

Dear Parents,

We hope you had a good week.

Important information:

  • If you have not returned your child’s learning story and the report comments, please do this as soon as possible. Please keep the report at home.
  • Loose Parts on Thursday 20th June.
  • Change of clothes: Please ensure that your child has a spare change of clothes at school (including pants and socks); these don’t have to be school uniform. It is really helpful for them all to have them (especially when they get wet). Please label all the items.

Here is a summary of our learning this week:

Literacy

Our phonics focus has been adding -ing to words ending with e.

We enjoyed watching a short clip titled ‘Whistleless’ about a little bird who is unable to whistle. It provoked great discussions and was a super inspiration for our writing this week.

Our tricky words this week are: enough, almost and mountain. Please continue to practice your spelling words at home. All children are aware of which block they are working on.

The pupils have been listening very attentively to each other delivering their talks. Well done everyone!

Ideas for learning at home

  • Reading books were sent home today. Please listen to your child reading their book and discuss what is happening in the text.
  • Practise adding -ing to these words: hope, care, blame, bake, make.
  • Continue to practise spelling of tricky words. If the weather is nice over the weekend, ask your child to use chalk on the ground to revise their spelling.

Maths

We have continued to learn about measurement. This week we have been learning about volume and capacity.

We have continued to work on core numeracy skills.

Ideas for learning at home:

Measurement

  • Look for containers whose contents are measured in millilitres. Record the container and the amount. Once you have a few, put them in order and discuss.
  • Choose 3 containers at home. Estimate how much each holds when full. Check your estimates with a measuring jug.
  • Here are a couple of online activities which will reinforce our learning in school.

What is capacity? – BBC Bitesize

Measuring in litres – Maths – Learning with BBC Bitesize – BBC Bitesize

Numeracy

Ask your child to draw three snakes, split into many sections, and to write a sequence of numbers in each snake, e.g. by counting on or back in 5s or 2s. For more of a challenge you could state that the fifth number in each sequence must be a particular number, e.g. 27 or 54, and say that at least one sequence must be counting back.

Here is an online game called Daily 10. You can select a core number skill for your child to work on. The site will generate 10 questions then provide the answers.

Daily 10 – Mental Maths Challenge – Topmarks

Other areas

PE

We are continuing to work on athletics.

IDL

We have been learning about recycling. We have created our won posters to inform others about the importance of recycling.

We also really enjoyed watching the P7 rehearsal for their show.

Have a lovely weekend.

P1 Koalas Reflective Friday 14.6.24

Hello everyone,

Here is a sample of our learning this week:

LITERACY

We shared a new reading book in our groups. We were looking at strategies to decode unfamiliar words.  The book your child brings home today will be the final book for Primary One as we are nearly at the end of term. Please return this book, and any other school reading books you may have at home, on Monday 17.6.24. Thank you.

We had a focus on the tricky words we have been learning and went on a tricky word hunt with the Pandas.

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

When you are sharing your child’s reading book ask them if they can think of any words to rhyme with some of the words in the book. Rhyming prompts children to repeat sounds and patterns, reinforcing their grasp of word sounds.

Please continue to practise the tricky words we have learned so far.

Block 1 – I the to was saw put he me is his want.

Block 2– you her she we be all are they come some said one were there into here do.

Write down the tricky words on a piece of paper or card, hold the cards behind your back then show them to your child and ask them to read the word you have shown them. Your child could practise writing these words, forming the letters the way they have been shown in class.

(If you are unsure about correct letter formation, please speak to one of us at the end of the day).

We will not be learning any new sounds in the next two weeks but will be focusing on the tricky words we have covered in P1.

NUMERACY AND MATHS

This week we have been taking our SNSA tests. The pupils undertake these one at a time.

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

Continue to talk about the language of position and direction : in front, behind, above, below, left, right, forwards and backwards.

PE

We used the positional language we had been learning about in maths to play games in PE.

LOOKING AFTER PLANTS AND ANIMALS

We were learning about caterpillars and how they become butterflies.

OUR TRIP!

We discussed the seaside and some of the living things we might find when we are there. We also talked about what we might like to do on our trip.

PRIMARY ONE CHARITY

We were learning about the Edinburgh School Uniform Bank and put together a short video to raise awareness of this charity.

LOOSE PARTS

We enjoyed creating and building with our friends in the Pandas.

Next date for loose parts is Tuesday 25 June.

Here are some examples of independent learning taking place this week.

Have a lovely weekend.

  • As explained on our blog on Friday 3rd May, this month the children will be doing a small presentation to their peers. This is part of the Literacy Curriculum (Listening and talking). Each day I am randomly selecting a few names from our class set of lollipop sticks and it is their turn to deliver their presentation.

Maths

We have started to learn about measurement. We have been measuring weight: we have used nonstandard units, we are learning to use a scale and check standard units such as grams and kilograms.  We have learned the difference between a real measurement and an estimate.

We have continued to work on numeracy skills such as subtraction.

Ideas for learning at home:

  • Could you cook together? Ask your child to read the scales and measure the correct amount.
  • Make predictions about how many grams different items might weight: an egg. An apple, an orange, a slice of bread, etc.
  • More information about measuring weight in here:
