Our learning this week

Here are some photographs of us developing our skills through our independent learning opportunities and experiences this week. Please take time to share these photographs with your child so they can share their learning with you.

Topics of pupil interest this week included hot air balloons and how they steer and land.

Literacy focus

This week we have been revising knowledge of, recognition of, and ability to blend of the 6 sounds focused on so far.

s a t p i n

Some children are already familiar with these letter sounds ( and more) and have already begun to build and blend words in class. These are skills to practise at home whenever you can.

Building a word. Using plastic letters or letters written on small pieces of card or paper an adult says a three letter CVC word ( consonant, vowel, consonant) and the child chooses the correct sounds to make the word.

Blending a word . Adult writes or uses letters to make a CVC word and the child should say the pure sounds of each letter then blend them together to read the word.

Our writing programme starts with telling stories through detailed drawing. This week our focus was “This is me. I like….”

Maths and numeracy focus

We have started our work on SEAL ( Stages of Early Arithmetical Learning) Pupils are working and challenged at a level appropriate to their individual development. These are examples of some of the skills we have been practising :

Counting in tens

Counting in tens off the decade

Recognising and ordering numerals to 20

Counting forward and back within 30 ( to 100 for some)

Establishing a collection.

Counting a collection with accurate 1-1 correspondence

Subitising ( recognising an amount without counting )

Watch THIS VIDEO and try to say the amount before you see the number

Other areas of the curriculum

We collected some sycamore seeds and enjoyed making them ‘fly’ like helicopters

In PE was have been playing games and doing activities to help us build skills in throwing, catching and hand eye coordination.

We have enjoyed playing some singing games and rhymes with Mrs Cross, developing our skill in keeping a steady beat and also exploring different ways in which we can use our voices.

Looking ahead to next week

Monday morning is the last day to return a home made Christmas card design.

‘Homework’ ( things to practice at home)

Go on

Go on a letter hunt as you are out and about, see how many of a given letter you can spot in environmental print.
Revise all sounds learned so far and build/read the words listed above.

Practise counting forwards and backwards within 20 starting at different points…

e.g. Count from 3 and stop at 9

Count backwards from 12 and stop at 7

Extend the range of number to provide challenge where required.

P1 Koalas Reflective Friday 22.9.23

Hello everyone.

This is what we have been learning this week:

LITERACY

We have been revising the six sounds we have learned since starting P1: s a t p i n

In small groups we were thinking about words beginning with these sounds, playing games, and identifying the letters which make these sounds. Some of us were learning how to ‘build’ and ‘blend’ three letter words with the sounds we know.

This week our starting sentence for writing was – ‘I was pointing at’.

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

Use letters written on a piece of paper or card to ‘build’ a word. The adult says a three letter word and the child choses the correct sounds to make that word.

An adult makes a three letter word, and the child says the pure sounds of each letter to blend together to read the word.

Some words you could use: sit sat nip pan tip pin pat sip nap

We have been learning how to form the 6 letters correctly and practising on whiteboards. Many children are keen to practise letter writing as part of independent learning.

NUMERACY

In numeracy we have been learning in small groups : identifying ‘how many’ in patterns of dots, making numbers using our fingers, describing equal groups, saying forwards and backwards number sequences, counting items and putting numerals in order.

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

Practise counting backwards from 10 starting from different numbers, if you feel that you can do this easily, try it from 20. For example, count backwards from 18 to 9, 15 to 6, 14 to 7 etc.

PE

We focussed on rolling and bouncing balls to each other .

TREASURE HUNT

We have been learning about The Rights of the Child. With our P6 buddies we used clues to find letters scattered around the school to make a message. We enjoyed exploring the school with our buddies and trying to work out the message. The message was – everyone has rights.

MEMORY BOXES

We have loved listening to the children share their memory boxes and it has been an excellent opportunity for everyone else to practise being a good audience. The children have spoken about the content of their boxes in a confident and articulate way, and we look forward to sharing the rest of the boxes in the weeks ahead.

Some examples of independent learning taking place this week:

Have a lovely weekend.

P2D Reflective Friday 22.09.23

Dear Parents,

We hope you had a great week.

Important information

  • Your children will be taking home their reading books today. This is a showcase of their learning. We have been reading the book at school so your children might find it ‘easy’. Please return the reading books on Monday: this is essential so books can be used by other children across the school.
  • PTA Christmas cards: we are sending  a blank Christmas card template home for fundraising. In school we have made already but if you wish to design one at home please return the sheet on Monday.

This is a summary of our learning this week:

Literacy

This week we revised all the initial blends and diagraphs that we have worked on so far: th, ch, sh, wh, -ai-, -ay, -oi-, -oy. It would be very beneficial for the children to practice these at home: looking for words that have those sounds in books, boxes, etc., thinking about words with those sounds and writing them.

We have introduced new tricky words from block 3: water, kind and find. Last week we worked on any, many, very and every. It would be very helpful if your children practice to read and write these words.

Please also revise the ones from block 1 and 2. (See last week’s blog)

In writing we wrote about our houses using the vocabulary we have learned in our topic.

Ideas for learning at home

– See suggestions above.

– Sounds hunt: th, ch, sh, wh, -ai-, -ay, -oi-, -oy. Look for these initial blends and vowel diagraphs in magazines, books, food tins, boxes, etc.

– Spelling: tricky words. Ask your child to write the tricky words any, many, very, every, water, kind and find using a different colour for each letter.

– Please continue to read stories to your child at home.

-Please continue to encourage your child to read at home. We have noticed that some children have lost fluency over the summer.

– Ask your child to write the words: wish, dish, cash, shock, bash, ash, chop, chat, chick, chum, thick, bath, path, this, then, when, which, whip, nail, chain, maid, pair, hay, ray, way, May, coin, soil, boil, boy, toy, joy. Can they write a sentence using one or two of these words? They can write them in post it notes and hide them around the house, whoever finds the most and able to read them wins.

  • You can use this online game. Please choose the sounds that we have worked on so far.

https://ictgames.com/mobilePage/forestPhonics/index.html

Maths

We have continued to work on addition and subtraction (within 10, 20, 50). We have been working on holding a number in our head then counting forwards (for addition) or backwards (for subtraction).  We have also used a number line to help us to count forwards and backwards.

We have continued to work on how to use a calendar: remembering the names of the months of the year, put them in order. We are finding difficult to remember the month before a given month.

Ideas for learning at home:

  • Ask your child to add two numbers together. For some, this might be with two single digits, for others it could be a 2 digit number plus a 1 digit number. For example 34 + 4. Encourage your child to ‘hold’ the big number in their head then count on using their fingers.

If your child is finding this difficult, make the numbers smaller and use counters or small objects for them to count.

  • For more challenge try this game:

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Look in the number bonds section and choose the right level for your child.

  • You could also look through a calendar at home. If you start to read the months in sequence, can your child continue to name the months in the correct order? Can they count how many weeks for a planned event?
  • Order the moths of the year.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zhk82hv/articles/zrr2jsg

  • Before and after: Please continue to work on this concept. If you see a number around (bus, house number, etc) challenge your child to say the number before and the number after.

Other areas

Social Studies

We have continued to learn about houses and homes. We are now confident to name and identify at least two types of houses from our local area.

PE

We have continued to develop ball control with our feet.

HWB

We have worked on our Wellbeing wheels to explain how do we feel using the wellbeing indicators.

ART

We have created our ….Christmas cards!

P2D Reflective Friday 15.09.23

Dear Parents,

We hope you had a great week.

This is a summary of our learning this week:

Literacy

This week we have introduced the oi and oy digraphs. As in ‘coin’ and ‘boy. We know that when the sound is in the middle of the word it will be the oi pattern and when it is at the end of the word it will be the oy pattern. Here is the visual prompt we have been using in class.

We have started to work on tricky words from block 3: any, many, very, every.

It would be very helpful if your children practice to read and write these words.

Please also revise the ones from block 1 and 2.

In writing we are learning to write a set of instructions. This week we have been learning how to cross the road. We linked this with our discovery walk around the local area. We have focused on using words of order and bossy verbs.

At story time we have worked on predictions.

Ideas for learning at home

– Please continue to read stories to your child at home. Building on our work from story time this week, can they predict what is going to happen in the story based on the information they have or on previous experiences?

-Please continue to encourage your child to read at home. We have noticed that some children have lost fluency over the summer.

– Here is a fun video introducing the oi sound. Alphablocks

– Ask your child to write the words below

oi words boil, foil, coin, join, soil

oy words boy, toy, joy

Ask them to write the oi /oy sound with a different colour than the rest of the sounds in the word.

  • Spin a word game attached.
  • You can use this online game. Please choose the sounds that we have worked on so far.

  • For more challenge try this game:

Subtraction Grids – Topmarks

  • You could also look through a calendar at home. If you start to read the months in sequence, can your child continue to name the months in the correct order? Can they find the birthday months for members of your family?
  •

Other areas

Social Studies

We have continued to learn about houses and homes. First, we looked at houses around the world and built our own houses using the items from loose parts. We all worked well in teams and did amazing houses. Following that we have been looking at houses in our community. In our discovery walk we were able to identify different types of houses. Thank you to the parents who were able to help on the day.

PE

We have continued to develop ball control with our feet.

HWB

We are learning to develop our personal coping skills. Through Rosie Revere the engineer’s book we talked about resilience and how sometimes things don’t work the first time we try.

French

We have learned how to describe our feelings which has linked to our work on Colour Monster. For example, Ca va? Ca va bien.

Things to remember

  • School closed on Monday 18th. Autumn holiday.
  • Loose Parts on Wednesday 20th .

We hope you have a lovely long weekend! (Remember there is no school on Monday!)

Topics of pupil interest this week included, birds perched on trees, waterfalls and canyons, the titanic, and planes.

Literacy focus

We have focused on two letter shapes/sounds this week n, and i . As you support your child with learning their letters at home please always pronounce the pure sound of the letter ( e.g. S = sssssss and not suh or the letter name ‘ess’ ). This is very important as we begin to blend letters together to make words.

Some words to make/read

sat tap pat at as in pin sit sip (past)

Some children are already familiar with these letter sounds ( and more) and have already begun to build and blend words in class. These are skills to practise at home whenever you can.

P1 Koalas Reflective Friday 15.9.23

Hello everyone.

This is what we have been learning this week:

LITERACY

We have been focussing on the sounds i and s. In small groups we were thinking about words beginning with these sounds, playing games, and identifying the letters which make these sounds. Some of us were learning how to ‘build’ and ‘blend’ three letter words with the sounds we know. We all practised writing i and s, learning the correct formation of the letters.

This week our starting sentence for writing was – I was shocked when………………………. We had some super stories, some real and some using our imaginations. The children are encouraged to draw their story then explain what is happening in their picture. Some children are keen to write the letters they have been learning.

NUMERACY

In numeracy we have been learning in small groups : identifying ‘how many’ in patterns of dots, making numbers using our fingers, describing equal groups, saying forwards and backwards number sequences, counting items and putting numerals in order.

PE

We practised using our eyes to track an object, having our hands ready to catch and throwing directly to a partner. We used beanbags and small balls to practise our throwing and catching.

MUSIC

We were learning to use our voices to sing and clapping our hands and parts of our bodies in time to the music.

DRAMA

Our drama was linked to the Julia Donaldson story ‘The Smeds and The Smoos’. We were using mime, movement, and facial expressions to express our ideas.

LOOSE PARTS

We enjoyed using water and all the loose parts materials to problem solve and investigate with our friends across the stage. Next Loose Parts play will be Wednesday 27 September.
