Literacy

• Spelling: this week we practised our spelling words in a variety of ways
• Team Jewel- working on the ea sound (eat, seat etc)
• Team Gold– continuing our work on adding ‘ing’ endings to words where you have to double the consonant at the end (e.g. fanning, binning)
• Team Treasure- plurals where you need to add ‘es’ to make the plural form (e.g. foxes, buses)
• Reading- reading aloud with fluency and expression in our reading groups; looking for words beginning with each letter of the alphabet in our books as a challenge.
• Handwriting– practising formation, focusing on the correct height of letters, starting to join script.

At home ideas:

• Write your own set of instructions using some of these openers: First, Next, Then, Finally… (It could be instructions for a recipe, how to feed a pet, how to brush your teeth- the choice is yours!)
• Choose a book (or magazine or comic) and read aloud to someone at home (parents, sibling, or even a favourite teddy or pet). Can you read fluently and add expression to your voice as you read?

Numeracy/Maths

• Continuing our work on fractions. Looking at halves and quarters and talking about how the bottom number of the fraction (the denominator) is how many equal parts that you are splitting the number or shape into.
• Continuing our focus on counting in 3s and linking this to the 3 x table.
• Continuing to work on measure: weight and capacity.

At home ideas:

• Fractions- have a look at the game below to practise your work on fractions.
• Practise your measuring skills by weighing some ingredients at home. Can you find any instruments at home that measure capacity? (Measuring jugs etc).

Happy Friday P1L!

You have all worked really hard this week! Well done!

Here is what we have been up to:

Literacy

In literacy this week we have learned the new sounds – ‘ft’ and ‘lt’. We enjoyed thinking of words which have the sounds in them, looking for words in our reading books and drawing pictures of words which have the sounds in them. We also enjoyed writing words with these sounds in sentences, reading texts and highlighting the new sounds and playing games! We also continued to learn and look at the Block 3 tricky words. This week we focussed on ‘would’ ‘should’ and ‘could’. Please continue to practice your tricky words at home and our new sounds each week. Please practice learning how to read, write and use the tricky words at home! (Block 1-Block 3)

For reading, we each got a new ORT book and we predicted what we thought was going to happen in the story before reading, we had word hunts and we read both individually and with a partner. We also practised our comprehension skills by completing a fill in the missing word activity sheet. We enjoyed the extra challenge of reading our book backwards this week! Reading books will be sent home on a Thursday and to be returned to school on a Monday! Please feel free to write any comments in your child’s reading diary! Some of us even read our first play scripts this week of a story we already knew.

In writing this week we wrote a story using the film trailer ‘Brave’ as a stimulus. We talked about characters and setting and used our plans to help us write out story. We also ensured we were using our non-negotiables and using descriptive language.

Things to try at home;

• Practice reading your reading book which is sent home! Read the book forwards and backwards, ask your child questions about the story, the characters etc. You could extend the learning of the book and ask your child to write the next part of the story.
• Revise our new sounds and tricky words! Can you read them and write them?
• Write a story about your weekend! Can you add lots of detailed language?
• Recognise and use our non-negotiables in everything you write!

Numeracy

In numeracy this week we practised our counting skills and recognising numbers up to 100. We also looked at 100 squares and noticing patterns on them. We counted screened and unscreened collections together and also practised making equal groups. We also practiced thinking of other ways to make numbers on our fingers, sequencing numerals and identifying numbers up to 100.

We also continued our Data Handling maths topic and revised everything we had learned the previous week.

Things to try at home:

• Practice counting to 100.
• Can you notice numbers in your local environment? On buses, houses or outdoors? What number comes before or after the one you see? What is 10 more than that number?
• Practice counting items or groups of items in your house. Can you make tally marks to show how many you have?

Other Curricular Areas

P.E: We enjoyed practising our athletic skills and learning how to use our arms and looking where we are going to help us run faster.

Topic: We also continued to think about different foods which come from plants and animals.

Outdoor Learning: We had lots of fun playing with the outdoor loose parts and exploring building and making things together!

Next Week:

• P.E will be on Monday and Thursday.
• On Thursday – we have the performance ‘Potato Needs a Bath’ which the children are required to bring in a root vegetable to school for the performance. I would be grateful if you could bring this in on Tuesday.
• Please bring appropriate outdoor clothing as we will have one outdoor lesson per day.
• Please return your reading folder (book and reading diary inside the folder please!) on Monday!
• Ms Leach will be teaching the class on Monday.

• Next week we will be joining Potato needs a bath online show as part of the Imaginate Festival. We are looking forward to this experience. To prepare for it we are going to celebrate Potato’s birthday, We are all invited therefore we all need to bring a fruit or vegetable on Wednesday as we will make party hats for them.

• Please continue to label all your children’s items.
• If you would like to change your child’s start or finishing times (even for one day) this needs to be approved by the SMT. It should be adults who email the school to ask permission to Management, unfortunately we cannot rely on children’s messages. Thank you for your understanding on this matter.
