P1 Tigers Reflective Friday 21.5.21

.

It has been lovely to welcome a new pupil to the class this week. Please say a (socially distanced, of course) hello to her and her family if you see them in the playground.

Literacy

Spelling

Our new sounds this week have been the blends nt, nd and mp found at the end of words and our new tricky words many and water. You can find the home learning sheet below. Please continue to work at home to consolidate the learning of the new sounds and using them to build and write words.

The word my is not one of our tricky words, but lots of us do find it a little confusing. Please learn to spell the word my if you don’t already know it. It is a useful word to know as we often use it in our writing.

Writing

We went to the woods and found a stick to be a magic wand. We decorated them and then wrote about them. In our writing we described our magic wands and then wrote about what they can do and what magic words we might use. We all have amazing imaginations !

.

Reading

Thank you for your continued support with reading at home. The children work hard in school all week so that when they bring the book home they feel confident to showcase what they have learned.

We continue to work in school on developing our reading skills. As well as reading the words and learning new vocabulary we predict, discuss and comprehend. We hope you enjoy sharing the books with your children at the weekend. If you feel perhaps that they have memorised the book ( which is part of the learning process) then you could ask them to read the book backwards, starting with the last word. Of course this makes no sense , but the children do find it funny and it helps the adults to see if the child can read the words with little context. We use this technique in class so the children are familiar with the idea.

Please note that we cannot send reading books home on Thursday unless your child has their purple folder with them, and we would respectfully request that the children do not carry their water bottles in the purple bags – we have already had one soggy reading book!

Numeracy/Maths

We continue to work on our numeracy skills, consolidating counting forwards and back, numeral recognition and addition strategies.

Other areas of the curriculum

We are learning about the life cycle of caterpillars and tadpoles. We enjoy watching them closely each day to see how they are changing and growing.

Here are some photographs of us enjoying our independent learning opportunities this week. Please ask us what we were doing.

Things to try at home

Practise knowing the order of the days of the week – focusing on the day BEFORE

Play this telling the time game.

Look around the house for all the clocks you can find. How many are digital clocks? How many are analogue ( with hands) ?

Count backwards from 30 to 10 ( or 100 – 30)

Write all your numbers from 1-9. Are they all the right way round? If not, can you practise them.

Practise spelling all the tricky words so far – how many can you write from memory ?

Be Geraldine……. ” Off she went around the house to find something ENDing with nt/mp/nd etc ” How many things can you find? You could make a list of all the things you find.

Practise your letter formation – are there any letters you find tricky to write ?

Learn to spell and write your surname.

P1 Tigers Reflective Friday 7th May

Thank you for all your support with learning together at home yesterday.

Today your child will bring home a copy of this terms newsletter along with some examples of the learning associated with last term’s targets. n.b. This pack is for you to keep at home, there is no need to return it to school, so please remove it from the purple folder – thank you.

This term’s targets have been posted on the ejournals today.

Next week in school is Health week when our whole school focus will be on learning how to keep our bodies healthy and active.

Children can come dressed in sportswear every day if they wish (no football strips please)

Have a lovely weekend.

P1 Tigers Reflective Friday 23rd April 2021

.

It has been lovely to see the children back after the Easter break. We have had a busy week.

Literacy

Spelling

Our new sounds this week have been the blends sk, sc, sm and sn, and our new tricky words so and very. You can find the home learning sheet below. Please continue to work at home to consolidate the learning of the new sounds and using them to build and write words.

Writing

In writing this week we wrote about our Easter break. It sounds like everyone had a great time.

Reading books will be coming home today instead of Thursday this week only.

Please note that we cannot send reading books home on Thursday unless your child has their purple folder with them, and we would respectfully request that the children do not carry their water bottles in the purple bags – we have already had one soggy reading book!

Numeracy/Maths

This week we have started to learn about time, revising the order of the days of the week. Most of us are confident naming the day after, but identifying the day before is a bit more tricky. We have learned how to read o’clock times on both analogue and digital clocks.

We continue to work on our numeracy skills, consolidating counting forwards and back, numeral recognition and addition strategies.

Other areas of the curriculum

In PE we were exploring balancing on one leg, two legs, two legs and one hand etc.

We also explored dance and movement activities on the theme of time.

We saw a tiny budgie egg and then explored which other animals hatch from eggs.

We used our sense of smell to sniff some things in pots. Some smells we recognised, some we didn’t. Some we liked, some we didn’t!

Here are some photographs of us enjoying our independent learning opportunities this week. Please ask us what we were doing.

P1Tigers Reflective Friday 30th October

It was a short week in school, but we have still been busy. There are only one or two children still to return their indoor shoes – please try to do this as soon as possible. It really does help to keep the carpet clean for us to sit and play on comfortably.

Literacy

I am lifting weights. I have a six pack. Actually, it is a four pack.

I pretended my stick was a pumpkin

I am holding two big sticks and catching a whale.

I am fighting a dragon. I won.

  • We drew detailed story pictures about using our imaginations – see more information under outdoor learning.
  • We continue to read books in school – we love discussing the funny illustrations and making predictions about what might happen next in the story. We are excited to be taking the first steps on our reading journey.
  • We continue to introduce and reinforce some single sounds and have been using them to create and read words. This week’s letter was g, and we made words including gap, get, pig, got and dig
  • We enjoy listening to and discussing a wide range of texts

Home learning ideas:

Please support us by spending some time at home practising the skills of blending the sounds to create and read words – a little often is the best way.

We will occasionally send an home learning activity idea in the purple folder, so please continue to empty the bag and check the contents regularly.

  • Download this Home Learning Template d o g On the sheet you will find the letters we have been learning this week along with a list of words to create. You can choose to print the sheet, or simply write out the letters of small pieces of paper. Use the letter cards to create simple words and ask your child to firstly, identify each sound, count how many sounds (phonemes) they hear, then blend or squish the sounds together into one word. Next, say a word which can be made using the letters. say it slowly and clearly – asking your child to identify the sounds they can hear before they ‘make’ the word with the cards.
  • Go on a letter hunt. Look around you for places where you can see any of the letters you know. Remember to say the pure sound of the letter not the name. ( so a= ah, not ay )
  • Ask an adult to write all the names of the people in your family. Who has an ‘i’ in their name….. who has an ‘ a’ (etc)
  • Play a game of “I spy” with our focus sounds.
  • Encourage your child to make their name in different ways: in the sand, with flour, play dough, etc.
  • If your child cannot yet write their own name, please practise this at home. Lower case letter please ( apart from the initial letter of course)

Numeracy & Maths

  • We have been learning our ,number bonds of 10. These are the pairs of numbers which fit together to make ten

 e.g.

1 +9 / 9 +1

2 +8 / 8 +2

3 +7 / 7 +3

4 +6 / 6 +4

5 + 5

10 + 0 / 0 +10

Play this game to help you practice

Roll a dice, and count out the right number of small items  ( 1p coins/buttons/raisins etc) Now put out some more until you have 10 altogether. How many more did you need to put out. Can you write the pair of numbers you made.

Challenge – write them as a sum 3 + 7 = 10

We have also been practising instant recall of doubles facts to 10, and some people have been trying doubles to 20 as well.

Play the HIT THE BUTTON game, then choose either number bonds (make 10) or doubles,( to 10)

  • We ave been exploring numbers to 10 20, or 30  with matching activities.
  • We have been practising instantly making and recognising finger patterns. Doing it on our head ( the bunny ears game) makes it a bit tricky as we can’t see our fingers, we just have to feel the pattern.
  • We have been working on recognising numbers and identifying pairs patternsPairs patterns
  • We have explored numbers to 10 (and beyond for some)
  • We have worked on sequencing numbers.
  • We have worked on counting forwards and backwards from different starting points.
  • We have been naming the next number in a forwards or backwards sequence

Home learning ideas

  • Count items using 1-1 correspondence. Put down a quantity of small items, for example raisins, buttons, counters, small stones or lego bricks. Ask your child to count them carefully, pointing to, or moving each one in turn. can they count the total accurately? Increase the level of challenge by using a larger collection.
  • Number hunt: Ask your child to look for specific numbers in the street: buses, house numbers and ask your child to say the number that goes after and before that number.
  • Practice number formation of the numbers 0 to 10 (or more if your child is confident with this already)
  • You may choose to play this game. Please choose from sequencing or ordering (forwards) from 1- 10 or 1-20
  • Play Three for me, one for you . The adult says three numbers in a sequence, either forwards or backwards, the child says the next number in the sequence. e.g. 6,7,8………9  or 14,13, 12…….11. You can choose the level of challenge by staying within 10, or going up to 20.
  • Play this game to help you create and name regular 2D shapes. We have used an ipad version of this in class.

Other areas of the curriculum:

Learning to use the ipad to record evidence of our learning activities.

Spider facts – we have been learning to appreciate spiders. Did you know that a Wolf spider does not spin webs but lives under logs?

PE – we did some fitness stations in the playground to raise our heart rates and keep wam

On PE days the children should come dressed for outdoor PE, there is no need to bring a PE bag with a change of clothes. On these days, we would ask that the children wear trainers or similar for the playground and PE. It is really hard to hop when you are wearing wellies ! (Wellies are ideal on non-PE days though)

Outdoor learning:
We tried to make Mandala patterns, but it was too windy and our leaves kept blowing away! We still had lots of fun collecting leaves and planning how to stop them blowing away.

We went to the woods and read the story ‘Not a stick’

You can watch the story  here

We collected sticks and used our imaginations to find different ways to play with them. We used our ideas to help us draw visual stories when we got back to class.

Independent learning:

  • These are some photos of the learning through play that we had the opportunity to experience this week: we particularly enjoyed exploring our fantastic new Kapla box. It has 1000 pieces !

Other things….

  • NUT FREE reminder – As we have a number of pupils in school with nut allergies, please help us to ensure their safety by keeping nutty snacks at home. This includes nut-based chocolate spreads in sandwiches.     Many thanks.

We are very proud of our Terrific Tigers!

Thank you for your continued support in your child’s learning.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Welcome back

It was lovely to see all the children today and hear their news from the holiday.

Can we please gently remind everyone to bring a pair of indoor shoes to wear inside to help keep our carpets clean, and to wear wellies or old trainers for enjoying the ever increasingly muddy playground .

many thanks

Purple book bags

Each P1 pupil will shortly be given a purple book bag. Although at the moment reading books are not being sent home, we would like the children to bring the purple bag to school each day. It will be used to send home any paper communications which are required, and for the return of any forms. If the children have drawings or worksheets which they have completed in school then they will bring them home in the purple bags too. The children’s snack can also be popped in the bag, negating the need to bring a bulky schoolbag. Lunch bags and water bottles can be carried separately. If your child has a Tupperware type lunch box rather than one with a handle, it can be brought in a lightweight carrier bag such as one from a supermarket. We appreciate that the children love the novelty of having a special schoolbag, but current covid related restrictions on cloakrooms and storage of bags make it tricky to store the large quantity of rucksacks appropriately.

Please check and empty your child’s book bag daily to avoid a large build up of contents which may hide important communications.

Thank you for your continued support.

  • The children’s spare clothes are kept in the classroom in the cubby holes close to their shoes.
  • It would be really helpful if all your child’s items could be labelled (packed lunches and water bottles too)
  • Please be mindful when choosing a snack for your child: make sure your child can open it independently. We are also a nut-free school.
  • We politely ask that you give your child only water in their bottles.
  • We still have no claimants for the lost property items which we posted two weeks ago, please have another look to see if you recognise anything.

We are very proud of our Terrific Tigers!

Thank you for your continued support in your child’s learning.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Literacy

  • We have now shared all the memory boxes which have been brought into school. if your child has not yet brought theirs and would still like to do so, please send it to school as soon as possible.
  • We continue to introduce and reinforce some single sounds and have been using them to create and read words. This week’s letters were n and p, and we made the words pat, pan, nap, tan, tap an and at
  • We have started to create visual stories in our jotters – We visualised a situation, then recreated the image by drawing lots of detail. We used our pictures to  help us re-tell the story. This process helps us to develop some important pre-writing skills.

P1Tigers Reflective Friday 4th September

Over the first few weeks we are working on class/school routines. All children have settled well into school. It is lovely to see how new friendships are developing and to hear all the chat from the children. We are happy to be moving back to our new classroom over the weekend and are looking forward to exploring our new environment next week.

Literacy

  • We continue to practise our listening and talking skills through sharing our memory boxes – only a few left to share.
  • We have enjoyed listening to and discussing a range of fictional books about bears.
  • We have introduced the characters from the Oxford Reading Tree Programme (our reading programme).
  • We have continued to practice rhyming words.
  • We designed Thank you cards to say thank you to the people at St Fillan’s church for our Buckstone Bears.
  • We created letters and cards using the lovely envelopes kindly donated by Waitrose.

Home learning ideas

  • Share a storybook about a bear
  • Find words that rhyme with a given word.
  • Play a game of ‘ I spy with my little eye, something that rhymes with…..’
  • Encourage your child to make their name in different ways: in the sand, with flour, play dough, etc.
  • The names that we would like children to identify are: Kipper, Chip, Biff, Floppy, Mum and Dad.
  • Please encourage your child to use a tripod grasp when holding a pencil.

Numeracy

  • We have been exploring numbers to 10 with matching activities.
  • We have been working on recognising numbers and dot patterns (to 10).
  • We have explored numbers to 10 (and beyond for some)
  • We have worked on sequencing numbers.
  • We have worked on counting forwards and backwards from different starting points.
  • We are working on number formation. – this week’s numbers were 0, 1, 3 and 4
  • Counting and number recognition

Home learning ideas

  • Number hunt: ask your child to look for specific numbers in the street: buses, house numbers and ask your child to say the number that goes after and before that number.
  • Practice number formation numbers 0 to 10 (or more if your child is confident with this already)
  • Count items: ask your child to give an X number of things: leaves, stones, sticks.
  • You may choose to play this game. Please choose from sequencing or ordering (forwards) from 1- 10 or 1-20

Other areas of the curriculum:

PE – we have been focusing on developing our travelling skills – walking, running, jumpoing with two deef together, hopping, skipping and ‘toe to heel tightrope walking’

Bears – we have been learning about different types of bears – black bears, brown bears, polar bear, Pandas and recognising that Koala’s are NOT in fact bears. You can listen to this song for more information.

Outdoor learning:

On Monday we were able to access our outdoor loose parts shed. We had great fun developing a wide range of physical, co-operative, creative and investigative skills.

Other Information

  • PE on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
  • We ask that the children bring shoes which they are able to put on and take off independently.
  • It would be really helpful if all your child’s items could be labelled (packed lunches and water bottles too)
  • Please be mindful when choosing a snack for your child: make sure your child can open it independently. We are also a nut-free school
  • We politely ask that you give your child only water in their bottles.

We are very proud of our Terrific Tigers!

Thank you for your continued support in your child’s learning.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend!
