  • Reading- continuing to work on our fluency skills when reading aloud; we completed a how many letters activity and we made character profiles of characters from James and Giant Peach
  • Handwriting- continuing to practise our letter formation. We have worked on forming c, C, d, D, e, E and f, F correctly this week.
  • Writing- writing super sentences with capital letters and full stops about our friends.
  • Dictation of our spelling sounds and writing a sentence.

  • Team Treasure: spelling words with a ea sound– tea, meat, east, steal, cheat, beast, beach, scream, speaking, reaching. Tricky words: little, down
  • Reading- continuing to work on our fluency skills when reading aloud; predicting what will happen in our new reading books.
  • Reading- enjoying the story of James and the Giant Peach and drawing pictures of the characters Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker.
  • Handwriting- continuing to practise our letter formation. We have worked on forming b, B, c and C correctly this week.
  • Writing- descriptive words for George’s Marvellous Potions.

Ideas for home learning

  • Spelling: draw a spelling flower where each petal has a word written in it from your spelling pattern (as practised in class).
  • Choose a character from a book, TV show or film and talk about or write a detailed description of them.
  • Practise reading and writing your tricky words. Here are all the tricky words on flashcards for Block 1-4 in case this is a handy guide for you. Try to use the correct letter formation if you’re writing them down!

  • Practising counting on and back, especially crossing decade numbers
  • Count out loud in 2s, 5s and 10s.
  • Find numbers in your local area (for example, door and bus numbers). Can you add 5 to the numbers you find?

Other Areas

  • Continuing our learning about sound in science. We listened to lots of different instruments being played, talked about how they make their sounds and completed a sorting activity.
  • French- continuing to revise French greetings including bonjour, bon nuit, au revoir, and ca va?
  • Outdoor loose parts play- we had so much fun using our imaginations with the loose parts play equipment, we didn’t let the pouring rain spoil our learning!
  • Outdoor PE- games to help our teamwork and listening skills- Cats and Dogs and Letters and Numbers.

Ideas for home learning

  • Do you have any instruments at home? Can you work out how they make their sounds? Do you blow, strike, bang or pluck them?
  • Do you have loose parts around you house or garden? What can you do with them?

P2/3 Golden Treasures Week Beginning 28th September


Important note: please can children come suitably dressed for the outdoors on Monday (5th).  We will be using the outdoor loose parts equipment in the playground in the afternoon and are likely to get muddy and wet! Thank you!

Another super week in the Golden Treasures class. Here’s what we’ve been learning this week. 

Literacy

  • Spelling: Team Gold: revising oi/oy sound, for example, coin, join, foil, soil, joy, boy, toy, annoy
  • Team Treasure: spelling words with a k/ck sound. We learnt that the rule is- words with a short vowel sound need a ck and those with a long vowel only needs a k. Examples: shock, block, black, attack, book, seek, meet, croak. We all enjoyed playing a popcorn game using our sounds.
  • Reading- continuing to work on our fluency skills and choosing our favourite characters and why we like them.
  • Reading- enjoying the story of James and the Giant Peach.
  • Handwriting- continuing to practise our cursive letter formation. We have worked on forming an ‘a and A’ correctly this week.
  • Writing- continuing to work on what makes a super sentence? 

Ideas for home learning

  • Spelling: can you make your own version of the popcorn game to play with your family?
  • Choose a character from a book, TV show or film and talk about why you like them.
  • Can you write a super sentence at home that starts with a capital and ends with a full stop? Can you add an awesome opener?

  • Reading and displaying information in charts: continuing our work on Venn diagrams.

Ideas for home learning

Reading

New reading books will come home today (Monday). Please remember to bring in your book every day so that you can work on tasks in class. We will collect books in on a Thursday. Most children are remembering their books every day- well done Golden Treasures!

We are continuing to work on reading with fluency. Practise reading as much as you can at home. Keep practising reading the tricky words. We are also looking at our favourite characters in the stories we read and why we like them.

The end of another busy week in the Golden Treasures class; we hoped you all enjoyed the Monday holiday.

Here’s what we’ve been learning this week.

Literacy

  • P2s and P3s- continuing to revise our tricky words from Block 1 and 2- reading and spelling
  • P2s- revising ew/oo sound, for example, chew, few, zoo, room
  • P3s- spelling words where we need to double the consonant at the end for example, words with ss, ff, zz, ll endings, for example, hiss, huff, buzz, will
  • Reading- continuing to work on our fluency skills and making predictions about our reading books.
  • Reading- finishing our class novel George’s Marvellous Medicine and starting to read James and the Giant Peach.
  • Handwriting- continuing to practise our cursive letter formation. We are working on curly caterpillar letters– we have practised c, a and o. We practise cursive writing throughout the school. At the moment we are continuing to work on our letter formation and are not joining our letters yet.
  • Writing- continuing to work on what makes a super sentence? We wrote a piece of big writing using what we had learned.

Ideas for home learning

  • Write down some words containing your spelling pattern using really fancy writing.
  • Make a prediction about a book/story/tv show you haven’t watched before based on its title and and front cover/pictures. Share your predictions as a family.
  • Can you write a super sentence at home that starts with a capital and ends with a full stop? What about writing a sentence that will end in a question mark?

  • Practising answering our ‘learn-it’ sums as quickly as possible.

Ideas for home learning

  • Practise counting in tens- challenge: how far can you go? Can you count backwards too?
  • Can you use tally marks to collect some information at home? Ideas could be counting the number of knives, forks and spoons in your cutlery drawer. Challenge: you could try to put this information into a pictogram of your own.

Other Areas

  • Outdoor PE- fitness circuits and running- please remember to wear PE kit for school on a Tuesday and Thursday
  • Continuing our learning about sound in science. We used our listening skills to figure out as many of the sounds as we could in a quiz. We’ve attached the link below in case you want another go at home.
  • French- revising French greetings including bonjour, bon nuit, au revoir, and ca va?
  • Drawing our own upside down houses in the style of Quentin Blake, using The Twits as our inspiration.
