This week’s homework

  • Learn to read and spell the words go, she

  • using your collection of letter cards from the weekly homework sheet, please practice building/ reading the list of words on this week’s sheet.
  • Check your letter formation for the letter a – use the video linked below to ensure you are consistently using the correct letter starting point and route.

In PE we created a sequence of moves using all the equipment we have used so far. We also, with supervision, tried a forward roll down a small ramp focusing on correct technique and control.

We were invited to visit the P7 interactive exhibition about Anderson shelters. We really enjoyed that – particularly when we were allowed to try the Minecraft activities!

This week we have introduced the vowel digraph wh and learned the tricky words we and be . Wh makes a blowing sound. We also had an assessment on our understanding of the ch, sh and th digraphs.

Our writing prompt this week was “When I go in the car….”

I am developing my awareness of how money is used and can recognise and use a range of coins.

Key vocabulary – coin, value, amount, change, pence, pounds ( please try to avoid using the word pennies for coins, as this causes confusion – only a 1p coin is actually worth a penny)

We have been counting amounts of coins and also choosing the correct coins to ‘pay’ for something. We also began to investigate the idea of giving change from a higher value coin. I have a10p coin and the toy costs 7p. I will need to be given 3p change.

Children don’t have the same exposure to loose change as they used to as we seem to be heading towards a cashless society, but if at all possible, create a coin collection for your child to explore and handle.

In PE we began learning to use a springboard. We also continued to practice our jumping and landing skills to jump from a box to a crash mat. We balanced on a thin beam and balanced on a mat. On Thursday we practiced yoga poses in the classroom as the hall was in use for the p2 show . We were fortunate to be able to watch a dress rehearsal of the show on Wednesday. It was great – well done p2.

We have started a block of learning about money. We have been handling real coins and looking closely at the designs on them. We noticed that not all coins have a number on them and that we need to learn to identify the value of the coin by size, shape and colour alone.

You may choose to play this game at home to reinforce our learning in school.

We have been working on individual numeracy targets this week, including ordering numbers to 20 or 100

.

Core numeracy skills this week included

  • writing the numerals 1 – 10 ( and beyond) correctly
  • counting backwards from 10 (or 20 for some pupils).
  • naming the next number in an isolated short backwards number sequence. ie. I say, 10, 9, 8 (they say 7)
  • establishing a collection (give me 9 counters/raisins/etc)
  • counting a collection beyond 10 with accurate 1-1 correspondence
  • recognising numerals
  • sequencing a short selection of numerals ( e.g. 5,6,7,8)
  • making instant finger patterns (show me 6 fingers without counting them)
  • recognising dice patterns and clapping the amount of dots on the dice

Our challenge numeracy skills were.

  • adding two collections with the second one screened ( e.g. here are 8 counters, there are 5 more hiding under this pot, how many altogether?)
  • sequencing numerals within the range 0-100
  • naming the number after a given number (0-30)
  • counting backwards from 30, starting and stopping at different points
  • investigating which equal groups can be made from a given number ( e.g. can I make 2 equal groups/3 equal groups/4 equal groups/5 equal groups from 12 counters? What about if I have 16 counters, or 18 etc)

Looking ahead to next week

World book day is on Thursday. If your child would like to bring a favourite book to show the class they are welcome to do so. We are not inviting the children to dress up this year.

On Friday next week, we will be going for a walk and play in the local woodland. This is dependent on there being no staff absences, and also reasonable weather. If it is very wet we will postpone – but a little rain won’t stop us, so please can children come appropriately dressed.

We learned about honey bees and bumble bees. Some key vocabulary included , honey…. hive …. beekeeper… swarm…. nectar…. pollinate

In PE we choreographed our own dances using the Scottish Country dance steps we knew. We performed the Flying Scotsman and the Circassian Circle to Mrs Imrie. She was very impressed.

We looked at some Scottish castles – key vocabulary: moat… turrets…drawbridge… portcullis… defence…protect. If any children have photographs of themselves visiting a castle we invite them to bring the photos in to share ( alternatively you could email them FAO Mrs Cross )

We learned how some families celebrate Chinese New year

We found out why we celebrate Burn’s night.

We learned about zebras – key vocabulary included mammal and herbivore

In PE we have learned some more Scottish Country dance steps and we can dance the whole of the ‘Circassian circle’

Many of our learners recognise the letters/sounds when they see them written down, but find it much harder to recall and write the letter shape for the sound they hear. e.g they can tell me that mop is m – o – p but cannot then write it down – instead saying ‘what does m look like again ?‘ Please help to consolidate your child’s ability to recall the grapheme needed for the sound they can hear.
