Unfortunately we cannot share any photographs of our learning this week. This is due to a technical issue with our WordPress host.

We are grateful for your continued donations of small, clean items of recycling for our STEM area

Many thanks

Independent learning

The children have been developing a wide range of skills through independent learning opportunities in class and outdoors..

Literacy.

This week we have introduced the vowel digraph oo as well as revising some of our ‘tricky’ words

We continue to use core reading book resources in school as we begin to develop developing the children’s reading comprehension skills, exploring the cognitive strategies of activating, inferring, monitoring/clarifying, questioning, searching/selecting, summarizing, and visualising.

We had another Friday ‘dictation/spelling’ written activity. Each week the children will be asked to spell two or three words using the sounds we know, and also to accurately write two of our tricky words. Please keep practising this skill at home.

Our Writing prompt was ‘I look at the moon….’

Numeracy and Maths

We have been working on data handling this week, learning how to create and interpret pictograms and block charts and how to use tally marks.

.

Core numeracy skills this week included

  • writing the numerals 1 – 10 ( and beyond) correctly
  • counting backwards from 10 (or 20 for some pupils).
  • naming the next number in an isolated short backwards number sequence. ie. I say, 10, 9, 8 (they say 7)
  • establishing a collection (give me 9 counters/raisins/etc)
  • counting a collection beyond 10 with accurate 1-1 correspondence
  • recognising numerals
  • sequencing a short selection of numerals ( e.g. 5,6,7,8)
  • making instant finger patterns (show me 6 fingers without counting them)
  • recognising dice patterns and clapping the amount of dots on the dice

Our challenge numeracy skills were.

  • adding two collections with the second one screened ( e.g. here are 8 counters, there are 5 more hiding under this pot, how many altogether?)
  • sequencing numerals within the range 0-100
  • naming the number after a given number (0-30)
  • counting backwards from 30, starting and stopping at different points
  • investigating which equal groups can be made from a given number ( e.g. can I make 2 equal groups/3 equal groups/4 equal groups/5 equal groups from 12 counters? What about if I have 16 counters, or 18 etc)

Looking ahead to next week

Have a great break from school, and we look forward to seeing everyone soon.

Don’t forget the holiday challenge !

Other areas of the curriculum

We learned about the moon. Some key vocabulary included , crater…atmosphere…gravity…full moon… crescent moon…

In PE we explored the properties of hoops. We also explored our fitness, raising our heart rate with exercise, then resting to recover.

A reminder to please name all items of clothing and shoes, and to check names on items brought home in case your child accidentally acquires a jumper belonging to someone else.

P2D Reflective Friday 3.02.23

Dear Parents/Carers,

It was lovely to see so many of you at Wednesday’s drop in morning. We hope that you enjoyed this session.

Here is a summary of our learning this week.

Literacy

We have been learning about soft g. Soft g is when the letter g makes the ‘j’ sound. Also, when g and e come together the sound is always j and the e is silent.  Examples: age, stage, badge.

Tricky words: people, again, four.

Our reading books are non- fiction books. We are learning to identify the features of non-fiction texts.

We have been working on comprehension skills: read a text, look for key words from it, answering questions about the text, etc. This is proving to be hard as the texts get more complex. When reading books at home please ask questions to your child about the text.

In writing we wrote descriptions for someone in our family. We are learning to use interesting describing words.

In handwriting we formed the letters n and m.

Ideas for home learning:

  • Please practise the tricky words from Block 5 that we have worked on at school: write, great, move, story, does, done, school, before, because, people, again, four.
  • Words to read at home to practise soft g: cage, wage, stage, page, rage, huge, bulge, plunge.
  • Practice cursive letter formation. Please reinforce how to hold the pencil correctly and the right letter formation.

https://teachhandwriting.co.uk/continuous-cursive-beginners-choice-1.html

Maths

This week we have continued to work on our addition skills (to 10, 30 and 100 for some).

We are talking about different strategies which we can use to solve these calculations. Some of us are using the counting on method and some are using a number line or mental strategy.

Ideas for home learning:

If you have a deck of cards at home, choose one of the games below to play.

      MEMORY  BONDS

Learning Outcome

I am practising my number bonds to ten.

Equipment

At least 2 players and 1 pack of cards with Jack, Queen & King removed.

Instructions

  • Place all of the cards face down, in a grid formation.
  • The first player turns over two cards and adds them together to see if they make ten. If they do, the player keeps them. If not, then they should be put back in the same place as before.
  • The next player has a go (remembering what has been uncovered before).
  • Keep going until all of the number bonds to ten have been found.
  • The winner is the player with the most cards at the end of the game.

      THREE  UP

Learning Outcome

I am practising adding a single digit to a two-digit number.

Equipment

2 players and 2 packs of cards with Jack, Queen & King removed.

Instructions

  • Make 3 piles of cards, face down.
  • The first player turns over the top card from each pile and places the first two cards together to make a 2 digit number.

The player adds the single digit as quickly as possible.

  • If they are correct, they keep all three cards. If not, the second player adds them together to work out the correct answer.
  • Keep going until you have used up all of the cards.
  • The winner is the player with the most cards at the end of the game.

      FASTEST  HUNDRED

Learning Outcome

I am practising my number facts to 100.

Equipment

3 players, 1 pack of cards with Jack, Queen & King removed and a calculator to check your answers.

Instructions

  • Chose one player to be the judge. The other two players are opponents.
  • The judge turns over two cards to make a two-digit number.
  • The aim is to be the first person to shout out what has to be added to that number to make 100.
  • If you are the first to answer and you get it right, you keep the cards.

If you are first to answer but get the answer wrong, the cards go to your opponent.

So, think carefully before you answer!

  • Keep going until you have used up all of the cards in the pack.
  • The winner is the player with the most cards.

Other areas of the curriculum

  • We have continued to work on gymnastics in PE.
  • We enjoyed a session of loose parts.
  • We enjoyed a visit from a parent who is an electrician to reinforce the learning we have been doing in Science.
  • We have continued to learn about island life through our Katie Morag topic. We have also been learning about Robert Burns.
  • In Health and Wellbeing we have been learning about the importance of kindness and empathy in making and sustaining friendships.
  • We have also started our new unit for Building Resilience: Have A Goal. In this unit, we will be learning that:

•Setting a realistic goal helps to motivate us

• Learning to overcome setbacks helps us cope with future ones

• It is important to celebrate our successes

Independent Learning

Ideas for home learning:

Talk to your child about a goal you set yourself and how you dealt with setbacks and failures along the way.

Have a lovely weekend.

P1B Reflective Friday 3.2.23

Good afternoon.

Literacy

This week, we learned the ‘ee’ sound. We pretend to be mice and go ‘ee ee ee!’. We made sheep and practised blending ee words.  We had another new reading book this week and did very well with our blending. Some of us just need to be more confident at taking time to sound out each sound in the word and then blend it together. We played fasted finger to see who could find the tricky word or the sound first!

Maths and numeracy

This week, we revisited symmetry and used our fingers and paint to create symmetrical butterflies. There were also some fantastic symmetrical structures made around the room. We were able to tell when our creations were symmetrical by just shape, or by colour and shape.

Other Areas

This week, we finished our Scottish Country Dancing learning by using some of the steps we have learned to choreograph and create our own dances! Each of us performed our routine to the class, and we all had a turn at giving feedback. We had another great loose parts session on Wednesday afternoon with lots of imagination, problem solving and team work. A couple of us even made a computer station! We enjoyed having the magnets back this week, see below for some of our our amazing creativity and imagination!

a magnetic village!
a granny holding a walking stick!
a modern museum!
using the fabrics in the area – here comes the bride!

Ideas to do at home

Numeracy: recognising the numbers 1-30 (the trickiest ones are 12, 13 and 20), counting backwards from 20 or 30, writing the ‘teen’ numbers with the 1 first and remember it’s ‘teen’ not ‘ty’ for 13-19, counting on with our fingers.

Maths: naming 3D objects, recognising symmetrical shapes/structures.

Literacy: being able to write our tricky words, confidence in blending 3-4 letter words, being able to write (as well as recognise) all of our sounds we have covered (A-Z with q as qu, ck and ee).

General: being able to take off jumpers and zip up coats.

General Information

Next Friday, we are going to go on a trip to the woods!

Please make sure your child has a spare change of clothes in school.

It was lovely to see some of you on Wednesday. Have a great weekend!

Numeracy and Maths

We have been working on individual numeracy targets this week, including finding the number between two given numbers, adding using the ‘counting on’ strategy, making equal groups, recognising numerals and naming the number after a given number.

You may wish to let your child play this BLAST OFF game at home. Choose a level for identifying numbers or counting on.

.

Core numeracy skills this week included

  • writing the numerals 1 – 10 ( and beyond) correctly
  • counting backwards from 10 (or 20 for some pupils).

Looking ahead to next week

On Friday next week, we will be going for a walk and play in the local woodland. This is dependent on there being no staff absences, and also reasonable weather. If it is very wet we will postpone – but a little rain won’t stop us, so please can children come appropriately dressed.

Other areas of the curriculum

We learned about honey bees and bumble bees. Some key vocabulary included , honey…. hive …. beekeeper… swarm…. nectar…. pollinate

In PE we choreographed our own dances using the Scottish Country dance steps we knew. We performed the Flying Scotsman and the Circassian Circle to Mrs Imrie. She was very impressed.

We looked at some Scottish castles – key vocabulary: moat… turrets…drawbridge… portcullis… defence…protect. If any children have photographs of themselves visiting a castle we invite them to bring the photos in to share ( alternatively you could email them FAO Mrs Cross )

A reminder to please name all items of clothing and shoes, and to check names on items brought home in case your child accidentally acquires a jumper belonging to someone else.

DROP IN

It was lovely to see so many parents on Wednesday morning. The children were very excited about sharing their classroom and their learning. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend.

This week we have been learning:

NUMERACY

We have been counting backwards, starting, and ending at different numbers. Some of us were recognising numerals to 30 and some of us were trying to recognise domino patterns really quickly. Some groups were practising holding a number in their head while adding another group of objects to that number. We also practised counting arhythmic claps.

INFORMATION HANDLING

We went into our playground to record the different types of birds we could see. We took photos to help us identify them later. We used this information to create a pictogram showing the number and the variety of birds we had seen. We then went on to  create a pictogram displaying the different eye colours in our class.

LITERACY

This week we introduced the sound ee. We thought of words containing this sound and matched words to pictures, writing some words ourselves.

This week’s dictation included the tricky words we have been revising this week: I, the, to, he, me, is. We also included some words which had the ee sound in them.

We use Pink for Think and Green for Great to reflect on our learning.

We have been enjoying reading the Biff, Chip and Kipper books in our literacy groups. We are beginning to develop comprehension skills, trying to decode words, and are encouraging the children to think about the story and predict what might happen next.

We talked about what we had done after school, the day before and then drew a picture a wrote a sentence about it.

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

Ask your child to explain what a pictogram is.

You could help your child to create a pictogram of toys or objects you have in the home.

Please cut out the flashcards your child has brought home today and use them to help your child to recognise the sounds and build words.

We are revising the Block 1 tricky words in class. These words can be quite challenging for the children to remember. Please continue to help your child to revise recognition and spelling of these words using the -look, say, cover, write check strategy. This week we focused on I, the, to, he, me, is.

Please continue to practise the words on the reading vocabulary card,  a few words at a time.

EXPRESSIVE ARTS

We learnt to sing Three Craws and Aly Bally Bee.

We created bees using lolly sticks, card, and googly eyes.

PE

We used the steps and movements we have been learning since the start of term to create our own Scottish dances with a partner. We used Scottish music to dance to and some of us showed our dances to the rest of the class.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

We attended a P1 assembly where we were introduced to our new Building resilience unit – Have a Goal. We discussed what we would like to achieve or learn to do and drew a picture.

OUTDOOR LEARNING/ LOOSE PARTS

Instead of Loose Parts on Friday 10.2.23, we will be going for a walk in the woods beside the playground.

Have a lovely weekend.

Buckstone Primary School

P1B Reflective Friday 27.1.23

Good afternoon.

Literacy

This week, we learned the ‘qu’ and ‘x’  and ‘z’ sounds. We found ‘qu’ quite tricky to remember that after a q there is always u!  We practised filling in the sound spaces for qu words. We found words around the room that end in x, like mix and box, and on Friday we found zoo and Zoë!  zoo We had a new reading book this week and did very well with our blending. We played fasted finger to see who could find the tricky word or the sound first!

Maths and numeracy

This week, we worked individually at the teaching table to practise our counting (especially backwards!), doubles and using our fingers for sums. The most common things to practise at home are at the bottom of the blog.

Other Areas

This week, we continued with our Scottish Country Dancing, but In PE on Monday, we did dancing to celebrate Chinese New Year. We had to make up dance moves for cleaning the house, opening the windows, hanging up lanterns and cooking a yummy meal! We made Chinese dragons, and worked on our fine motor skills with cutting and folding the dragon body. We had a fantastic loose parts session outside too!

To do at home

Numeracy: recognising the numbers 1-30 (the trickiest ones are 12, 13 and 20), counting backwards from 20 or 30, writing the ‘teen’ numbers with the 1 first and remember it’s ‘teen’ not ‘ty’ for 13-19, counting on with our fingers.

Literacy: being able to recognise and write our tricky words (we are good at recognising them but need practise to write them!), blending 3-4 letter words by saying the sounds slowly in one big breath, being able to write (as well as recognise) all of our sounds we have covered (A-Z plus ck with q as qu).

General: being able to take off jumpers and zip up coats.

General Information

We have loose parts on Wednesday next week, please make sure your child is dressed appropriately.

Please make sure your child has a spare change of clothes in school.

Please ensure your child is coming into school with a waterbottle.

Looking forward to seeing some of you at the drop-in on Wednesday morning,

Miss Croal
