Buckstone Primary School, P1 Koalas

Primary One Masterminds- Reflective Friday 14.10.22

Hello everyone, this is what we have been learning this week:

MATHS

This week we have been learning to recognise and describe 2D shapes and 3D objects. We built shapes using lolly sticks and made pictures using different shapes. We looked for 3D objects in the classroom and talked about cube, cylinder, sphere, cuboid, and  pyramid. We investigated whether these 3D objects could stack or roll.

Here is a sample of our learning:

LITERACY

This week we introduced the sounds e and h. We thought of words beginning with those sounds and learned songs and actions to help us remember them. In small groups we used magnetic letters to try to blend sounds together to read and build words.

We introduced two tricky words – I and the. These are words that cannot be sounded out.

FOUNDATIONS OF WRITING

We discussed when we need to change our shoes and the different reasons for this.

We drew pictures of us changing our shoes and shared our stories in our group.

We practised diagonal lines in handwriting.

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

Please use the blue letter cards you have collected so far to practise blending and building words. Practise writing the tricky words from memory and read them using a ‘look and say’ approach.

Some examples of our learning:

PE

In our outdoor PE time, we were developing our jumping skills. We played a jogging, walking,  skipping game to warm up and went to the correct shape drawn on the ground when the whistle blew. We practised running at different speeds, jumping high, jumping two feet to two feet, one foot to two feet and one foot to one foot. In the hall we worked in a group to make different shapes with our bodies and raced against each other in team games.

OUTDOOR LEARNING

We went for a walk in the wooded part of our playground and looked at how the leaves had changed since September.

We made pictures using natural materials.

LEARNING ABOUT OUR SCHOOL

We had a walk around our school to find out where the classes from P4 to P7 are. We saw the library and the office.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH

We listened to the story of Rosa Parks and discussed her bravery and the work she did to ensure all people were treated fairly.

We hope everyone has a lovely October break.

PRIMARY ONE MASTERMINDS 7.10.22

Hello everyone, this is what we have been learning this week:

NUMERACY

We were learning to recognise numerals, to recognise regular dot patterns, count a number of movements, count items in a collection and say the number which comes before and after a number. We were looking at domino patterns and singing songs to help us count.

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

We are going to be looking at flat shapes and 3D objects next week. See if you can spot any shapes at home, do you know their names?

LITERACY

This week we introduced the sounds m and r. We thought of words beginning with those sounds and learned songs and actions to help us remember them. In small groups we used magnetic letters to try to blend sounds together to read and build words.

Activities in the classroom this week included: using the marble run, making masks, and sorting objects which began with r.

FOUNDATIONS OF WRITING

We discussed the wind and how we can tell when the wind is blowing.

We drew pictures of our hair blowing and shared our stories in our group.

We practised horizontal lines in handwriting.

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

Please use the blue letter cards you have collected so far to practise blending and building words.

PE

In our outdoor PE time, we were developing our jumping skills. We played Simon Says to warm up and then practised jumping two feet to two feet and one foot to two feet. We had a shorter time during indoor PE due to the Evening News photograph being taken. This week we focussed on running games.

DRAMA

As a follow up to the story ‘When Mum Turned Into a Monster’ we used our bodies and facial expressions to pretend to be a monster then shared one fact about our own monster with the class.

OUTDOOR LEARNING

We made self portraits using natural materials.

LOOSE PARTS

Primary one will now have loose parts on Friday 14 October.

Here is some of the children’s learning from the last two weeks.

P1M Reflective Friday

Hello everyone, this is what we have been learning this week:

NUMERACY

We were learning to recognise numerals, to recognise regular dot patterns, count a number of movements, count items in a collection and say the number which comes before and after a number.

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

Please practise saying the number which comes before and after a number. If your child can do this with numbers up to 10, try with numbers up to 20.

LITERACY

This week we have been revising the sounds introduced so far. We worked with the children individually to assess whether they could recognise the letters, say the pure sound of the letter, identify the letter by the sound it makes and whether they could blend sounds to read words and word build using magnetic letters.

FOUNDATIONS OF WRITING

We discussed waving to people and thought about who we could wave at. We drew pictures in our writing jotters and the teacher scribed our stories.

We shared the story ‘Sparkle Boy’ and talked about how we all should have the freedom to be ourselves.

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

Please use the blue letter cards you have collected so far to practise blending and building words.

PE

In our outdoor PE time, we ran at different speeds, ran in straight lines, ran over low obstacles, ran as part of a team. In the hall we began with lots of running games to warm up our bodies, we used different parts of our bodies to move around the room. We chose an animal and tried to copy the way it would move then we guessed each other’s animal. We worked together in teams to race one another, moving in different ways.

HWB

As part of our Building Resilience programme, we are thinking about ‘Looking on the Bright Side’ this term. We spoke about what we are grateful for and drew pictures for our wall.

We continued this theme in drama where we thought about difficult or challenging situations which could arise in school and the things we could say and do which would help us to cope with them.

We enjoyed a calm time when we participated in Cosmic yoga.

LOOSE PARTS

We enjoyed playing with our friends from the other classes during loose parts.

Primary one will have loose parts on Wednesday 5 October.

Enjoy the weekend everyone.

P1M Reflective Friday 23.9.22

Hello everyone, this is what we have been learning this week:

NUMERACY

We were learning in small groups and practised saying number word sequences forwards and backwards, starting from different numbers up to 20. We said alternate numbers and the number which came next in a sequence- 8, 9, 10 -. We identified numerals and used our fingers to make numbers.

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

Please continue to practise counting backwards starting from different numbers. If your child is confident doing this from 10, they could try it from 20.

LITERACY

We introduced the sounds I and S.  (Apologies, last week’s blog said the sounds were s and n when they were p and n). We thought of things beginning with these sounds, learned an action  and sang some songs to help us remember them. We used a board and magnetic letters to locate the letters and to make some words. We tried to decode some three letter words made from the sounds we know. Activities in the classroom this week included: creating an insect from natural materials, building an igloo from natural materials, and drawing a Smed and a Smoo.

We shared the big 0RT book together and were introduced to the character of Floppy, the family dog.

FOUNDATIONS OF WRITING

We spoke about the weekend and any interesting things we had seen when we were out and about and drew pictures of ourselves pointing at these things.

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

Your child will bring home flashcards today, please use these to help your child recognise the sounds and to build the suggested words. Look around the environment and help your child to spot these letters and recognise them in different fonts.

PE

In our outdoor PE time, we continued to practise different ways of travelling. In our hall PE time, we played lots of different running games to warm up and practised different ways of using our bodies to make shapes. We worked with a partner and took turns to be the leader. We finished with some  games to help us work together as a team.

OUTDOOR LEARNING

We created pictures of our families using natural materials.

We used chalk to  practise writing the sounds we have learned.

LOOSE PARTS

Primary One were lucky yesterday as the rain stopped in time for us to enjoy our loose parts. The children really enjoyed working together with the whole year group to set out all the equipment, choose materials, build, create and problem solve. They were great at putting away all the materials at the end of the session. Very well done P1.

Enjoy the weekend everyone.

Here are a selection of photos from our first few weeks in P1.

LITERACY

We introduced the sounds a and t. We thought of things beginning with these sounds, learned an action  and sang some songs to help us remember them. We used a board and magnetic letters to locate the letters and to make the word – at. There are activities throughout the classroom to help us practise these sounds.

We shared the big 0RT book together and were introduced to some of the characters we will be meeting in our reading books: Kipper, Biff and Chip.

We spoke about the people in our families and drew them in our writing jotters, adding as much detail as we could.

We shared lots of lovely stories together. Primary six buddies came into class to share stories with Primary one.

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

Your child will bring home flashcards today, please use these to help your child recognise the sounds and to build the words a and at. Look around the environment and help your child to spot these letters and recognise them in different fonts.

PE

In our outdoor PE time we continued to practise different ways of travelling. In our hall PE time we played lots of different running games to get warmed up and made different shapes with our bodies. We worked as a team to make larger shapes and worked together to collect the most hoops for our team.

DRAMA

Some children were using the home corner to order and make pizza so we were using mime  to make our own pizza and then shared what we had made with our friends.

LOST ITEMS OF CLOTHING

Some children are finding it quite tricky to keep track of their jumpers, cardigans, and coats, especially at lunchtime. Anything the PSAs see in the playground they bring into the classroom so please just ask at the end of the day if your child is missing something. Items can also go missing in the lunch hall, so we can also check in there. Please make sure all items of clothing and all belongings are named.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

PRIMARY 1 MASTER MINDS- REFLECTIVE FRIDAY 2.9.22

Hello everyone and welcome to our  blog. Please try to read the blog every week as we will pass on all the information you will need.

We have had a busy week in primary one, this is what we have been learning:

NUMERACY

We have been looking at the numbers 6 to 10,using our fingers to show these numbers, using the loose parts in the classroom to count objects, and trying to write the numbers at our writing table. We have been  counting forwards and backwards up to 10 and beyond, starting from different numbers. We enjoyed singing and moving to number songs.

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

Look for numbers around your home and when you are out and about. Try to spot the numbers 0-10.

LITERACY

This week we have been focussing on rhyme. We have been reading stories which rhyme and have been completing a one to one rhyme assessment with the teacher.

We have really enjoyed listening to our friends sharing their memory boxes.

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

Share some rhymes or rhyming stories at home, see if your child can guess what the word will be when you say its rhyming partner.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

We enjoyed PE outside and in our gym hall. We have been practising different ways of travelling: skipping, running, hopping, jumping and side stepping. We played lots of games and practised listening to instructions and sharing space. We used cones to practise jumping forwards and backwards, jumping with 2 feet and landing on 1, jumping on 1 foot and landing on2, and hopping over the cone.

DRAMA

We enjoyed using our imaginations in drama based on the story of Bonting by Shirley Hughes. We were introduced to the word mime and used our facial expressions and bodies to show how we were feeling.

STEM ( Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths)

We really appreciate your ongoing donations of clean recycling – yes, we really do need more boxes!

Our STEM area is a core part of our play curriculum in school. The end product may not look like much, but it is the process that matters. ‘Junk’ modelling helps to develop their imagination and creative abilities while challenging them to explore, investigate and problem solve as they bring their ideas to life.

Children can work on their own or co-operate with others, learning to negotiate and share ideas. When they create something new it can give their confidence and self-esteem a big boost. They can also consider how their plans have worked out as they think about what they might have done differently or how they might improve their model.

With these materials they practise complex skills from fine and gross locomotor skills to higher order executive functioning; higher order thinking skills such as sequencing, hypothesis testing, divergent problem solving, analysis and evaluation.

If they don’t take their model home at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter – the learning has already happened. If it does come home, please value the process your child has gone through more than the product itself. Thank you.

We hope that your child is now feeling happy and settled in school, if you have any concerns or would like clarification about something, please speak to one of us after school.

Have a lovely weekend.

Buckstone Primary School

P3MB Friday 30 October

Hello everyone, we hope you all had an enjoyable break last week. It was lovely to welcome the children back to school and to hear about all the things they were doing.

This week we have been learning:

MATHS AND NUMERACY

In mental ,maths we were counting backwards in ones, twos and tens, starting from different numbers.

We began looking at different subtraction strategies and started by counting back by one, two and three. Some of us challenged ourselves by using larger numbers.

We talked about fact families looking at the link between addition and subtraction-

eg 6 + 3 = 9

3 + 6 = 9

9 – 3 = 6

9 – 6 = 3

We talked about fact families having the same three numbers and making sure we always start with the largest number when we are using subtraction.

We also linked our health and well being discussion to maths and completed a graph based on different emotions. Afterwards we discussed how different our graphs were because we all experience similar situations differently.

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

Use two dice to to get three numbers in a fact family-

If you threw a 6 and a 5, your fact family would be 6, 5 and 11.

Write the two addition facts and two subtraction facts you could make from these three numbers.

Challenge

Throw the two dice twice to make two 2 digit numbers.

Eg 2 and 6 become 26, 3 and 4 become 34.

The fact family would be 26, 34 and 60

Write the two addition facts and two subtraction facts you could make from your three numbers.

LITERACY

We are all really enjoying our Secret Seven class novel.

We made predictions about what might happen next in the story and wrote our ideas down.

We used our imaginations to write a mixed up fairy tale (just like the play in the Secret Seven book) and had some great ideas for our stories.

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

We are really looking forward to listening to the children review their favourite book. We will be starting this next Monday 2nd November. (Please see previous blog post for further information.)

PE

We are continuing to improve our fitness levels and have been working on running skills this week,

ART AND CRAFT

The children enjoyed making some Halloween crafts and worked together well to share resources and help one another.

We loved looking at all the different pumpkins on our Buckstone pumpkin trail.

Here are some ideas to do at home for Halloween:

P3MB Friday 16.10.20

Hello everyone

This is what we have been learning this week:

MATHS AND NUMERACY

We completed a maths assessment which covered the areas of numeracy we have been working on since the start of P3.

‘We have been counting in 3s and 4s’

‘The assessment was quite tricky’

‘It was a bit fun too’

We created 3D objects using 2D drawings, art straws and plasticine. We discussed vertices, edges and faces.

‘It was REALLY fun but quite tricky to make a cube’.

‘I found it easy and I was the first one finished’.

LITERACY

We used ‘Tunnel in a Hedge’ as a story start and wrote the rest of the story focussing on full stops and capital letters.

‘This was very fun’.

‘We all like to add a lot of detail’

We summarised the story of ‘The Three Little Ghosties’, trying to divide the story into beginning, middle and end without using too much detail.

‘We used the summary words to help us.’

‘It was a good story’

.HWB

We looked at the Building resilience PowerPoint and in a circle time shared occasions which we have found difficult and talked about the things we did to help us cope

.’We were talking about things we find difficult and discussed lots of lovely ways to cheer ourselves up.’

We enjoyed our fitness sessions in the playground and played lots of games to make sure we were running about.

HOME LEARNING

Please remember to look at the blog post from Monday 12 October. This has all the information about the book talks which are due the week beginning 2nd November.

Have a lovely October break everyone.

Buckstone Primary School

P3MB Friday 9.10.20

Hello everyone

This is what we have been learning this week:

NUMERACY

We have continued to look at different addition strategies and use them to work out addition problems. This week in mental maths we were adding 9 by adding 10 and subtracting 1 and adding 11 by adding 10 then adding 1 to work out our answers.

We were adding 2 digits plus 1 digit and 2 digits plus 2 digits by adding units (or ones) first, then adding the tens. Some of us added 3 digits plus 2 digits to extend our learning.

TO DO AT HOME

Most of us completed a – ‘What Makes ?’ sheet and took it home. This worksheet is to help your child learn the number bonds within 10. It is very important that they are able to recall these facts quickly as this will help them to add bigger numbers quickly and accurately in the future.

You could play this game to help you.

https://pbskids.org/curiousgeorge/busyday/ten/

LITERACY

READING

We have continued to practise summarising a story. This week we have summarised ‘Sparkle Boy’ and ‘When Mum Turned into a Monster’.

‘They were really fun stories’

‘Sparkle Boy had lots of sparkles’

‘Boys can wear girl clothes, there are no rules’

‘These stories were interesting and unusual’

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

Remember to talk about beginning, middle and end when you are discussing stories with your child. Ask them to summarise the story without too much detail but making sure they identify the main points.

Please share and discuss your child’s reading book with them.

WRITING

We are trying to write super sentences and working very hard to think about where to put full stops in our writing. We wrote a personal piece of writing, trying hard to punctuate it correctly.

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

You could write some interesting (or silly) sentences to go with some of your spelling words making sure you have remembered capital letters and full stops.

TOPIC

We discussed what we would like to learn about Mynah birds and will be finding out answers to our questions in the next few weeks.

‘We hope to learn lots about mynah birds.’

‘Mynah birds are interesting’

PE

We have been lucky with the weather this week and have enjoyed keeping fit in the sunshine by exercising and playing games.

FRENCH

We tried to have short conversations in French this week, saying hello and asking each other how we were, then saying goodbye.

‘It was hard’

‘Fun but complicated.’

‘I got a bit muddled.’

Have a lovely weekend everyone.
