P2/3 Golden Treasures Week Beginning 28th September

Important note: please can children come suitably dressed for the outdoors on Monday (5th).  We will be using the outdoor loose parts equipment in the playground in the afternoon and are likely to get muddy and wet! Thank you!

Another super week in the Golden Treasures class. Here’s what we’ve been learning this week.

Literacy

  • Spelling: Team Gold: revising oi/oy sound, for example, coin, join, foil, soil, joy, boy, toy, annoy
  • Team Treasure: spelling words with a k/ck sound. We learnt that the rule is- words with a short vowel sound need a ck and those with a long vowel only needs a k. Examples: shock, block, black, attack, book, seek, meet, croak. We all enjoyed playing a popcorn game using our sounds.
  • Reading- continuing to work on our fluency skills and choosing our favourite characters and why we like them.
  • Reading- enjoying the story of James and the Giant Peach.
  • Handwriting- continuing to practise our cursive letter formation. We have worked on forming an ‘a and A’ correctly this week.
  • Writing- continuing to work on what makes a super sentence?

Ideas for home learning

  • Spelling: can you make your own version of the popcorn game to play with your family?
  • Choose a character from a book, TV show or film and talk about why you like them.
  • Can you write a super sentence at home that starts with a capital and ends with a full stop? Can you add an awesome opener?
  • Practise reading and writing your tricky words. Here are all the tricky words on flashcards for Block 1-4 in case this is a handy guide for you.

b

Numeracy and Maths

  • Saying numbers sequences forwards and backwards from a variety of starting points
  • Practising counting in 2s and 10s.
  • Working on number bonds to 10, 20 and 100 and knowing these really confidently.
  • Consolidating our understanding of place value, linking this to money.
  • Working on our doubles to 20.
  • Reading and displaying information in charts: continuing our work on Venn diagrams.

Ideas for home learning

  • Use the links below to hear songs about counting in 2s, 10s and to practise your number bonds.
  • Teach an adult how to play number bonds to 10 Bingo!

Other Areas

  • Outdoor PE- games to help our teamwork and listening skills- Cats and Dogs, Simon Says and Letters and Numbers.
  • Continuing our learning about sound in science. We made our own cup and string telephones to show us how sound can travel.
  • French- continuing to revise French greetings including bonjour, bon nuit, au revoir, and ca va?
  • Drama outdoors- acting out a scene from our class novel.

Ideas for home learning

  • Make your own cup and string telephone at home.
  • Act out a scene from a book or show you enjoy, can someone at home work out who you are?

Have a great weekend, we’ll “see” you all next week at our virtual parents’ meetings.

Reflective Friday – 2.10.20

Literacy Alfie and Rebecca

This week we have done a discursive essay on whether Daleks should stay in Buckstone or not. We used our signpost words for help, this taken 3-4 days to plan and write.

For spelling we used the pattern au and aw e.g. launch, crawled, automatic and exhausted etc. Once we wrote our spelling words we needed to check if they were right and the ones, we got wrong we played a game with.

In Kensuke’s kingdom this week we read some of chapter 6. So far in chapter six we have read that Michael has seen two boats and tried to get their attention, but he did manage to do it so decided that he will make a big beacon behind some rocks so that Kensuke wouldn’t see it. After that there was a storm that lasted a few days but luckily when it ended Michaels beacon was still intact.

Numeracy/ Maths – Gregor and Lauren

This week in maths we have done column subtraction and multiplication. We are starting to use Decimals in are column maths and are getting better at it.

It is maths week Scotland this week. We have looked at different jobs that require mathematics and algebra. It is exciting to look at all the jobs that require these

We have looked at rounding numbers and estimating answers with those rounding numbers. This can be tricky at times due to what kind of number your rounding it to. We also used decimals with this as well.

IDL/other Roni and Emily

This week we have learned how to make a successful volcanic eruption using ingredients such as: bicarbonate of soda, dish soap, vinegar and red food colouring.

In PE this week we played capture the flag which is a tactical game that includes teamwork and strategies.

In ICT this week we researched famous volcanos such as Krakatoa, mount fuji and other volcanoes.

What we enjoyed

We enjoyed erupting our volcanoes.

We enjoyed playing capture the flag in PE

We also enjoyed erupting the volcanoes. The ingredients were: Bicarbonate of soda, fairy liquid, food colouring and vinegar. It was cool!

Next steps/home learning

  • Practise your times tables to help us with our multiplying decimals.
  • Make a power point on some facts you know about some things you learnt this week.

P1 Lions Reflective Friday 2.10.20

Welcome to the Primary 1 Lion’s blog!

The Lion’s have had another great week in Primary 1! We have had lots of fun playing with our friends both inside the classroom and outside in the playground. Sorry there won’t be any lovely pictures on the blog this week but we will have lots to share with you next week.

Thank you with your support of only bringing in your child’s purple book bag to school this week, the cloakroom has been so much tidier and we can get access to our coats much easier.

Literacy

  • This week we learned two more sounds: ‘r’ and ‘e’.
  • The P1s are becoming much more confident with blending sounds together to create words. It is so lovely to see their development.
  • In writing we did ‘this is me.’ We each had a photo of ourselves to help imagine a story. We could be anywhere we wanted as long as we drew ourselves. Some P1s told a story about going to the zoo, walking in a garden with pretty flowers, going to the moon, being on the sun. Lots of lovely ideas! We also have been continuing to practice making our drawings very detailed and taking out time to do them.
  • We also continued to talk about the ORT reading characters in preparation for starting reading next week. We have been trying to recognise their names and read them confidently.

Numeracy

  • This week we continued the SEAL maths programme which teaches children the foundation skills in maths. We practised counting forwards and backwards to 10 and beyond together, counting claps, recognising dice patterns and random dot patterns and counting in sequences. The children are already showing that they are retaining the knowledge they are learning, which is showing greatly in our small group time.
  • We also started our first non-number maths topic of 2D shapes. We looked at different types of shapes and their properties (corners/sides) and went on a shape hunt around the classroom. We then drew what we found and talked about the different types of shapes that are around us on a daily basis. For example – buses are rectangles.
  • The video below is also great for practising the skills we are currently learning in numeracy. Have a go at home and challenge someone in your family to have a go with you.

Other Areas

P1 has also been having lots of fun playing outside in the playground. In P.E we have been working on our fitness and throwing skills. This week we were practising throwing bean bags into hoops from a distance and working together as a team in our exciting races.

We have had lots of fun developing our social skills by playing with our peers in the classroom. We have lots of fun drawing pictures and making crafts, playing in the home corner and reading in the book corner. We also have lots of fun building castles and towers with the construction blocks. There is always lots of fun things to do in the classroom to support our learning and play.

Things to Try at Home

  • Practice reading the ORT character names on the blue sheet that was sent home on Tuesday. See if you can read them confidently.
  • Ask your child to give you X amount of various things. For example sticks, leaves, stones. Whatever you can find. This will help with our counting skills.
  • Practice using your ‘bunny ears’. Ask your child to show you a number on their fingers using the bunny ears method. They should practice holding up the number of fingers straight away without needing to count each finger. They then look at their fingers to check if they are correct. This is great for numeracy development.
  • Ask and adult to clap their hands so many times, can you count how many times they clapped? For an extra tricky challenge try clapping your hands at different speeds, for example 2 slow and 3 quick. Can your child count the number of claps?
  • Can you recognise dice patterns within different shapes?
  • Practice making words out of the sounds we have learned so far – ‘a’ ‘t’ ‘p’ ‘n’ ‘s’ ‘r’ ‘e’ and ‘i’ – for an extra challenge can you write and sound out the words you have made?

Happy Weekend!

  • I will be teaching the class Mon-Fri next week.
  • I look forward to meeting with you via the parents booking app for parents evening on Thursday night and Friday afternoon. Feel free to ask me any questions you might have about your child’s learning and time in school.
  • P.E will be on Mondays and Thursdays – please come dressed and ready for P.E.
  • This was emailed home last week regarding reading in P1. Here is another copy in case you didn’t see it.

Thank you for your continued support with your child’s learning and time in school, it is greatly appreciated. I hope you have a lovely weekend and I look forward to seeing you on Monday!

P7F Reflective Friday 2.10.20

Hello! Please find below our Reflective Friday for this week.

Next week we will be making our own volcanoes and so it would be really helpful if each child could bring in newspaper and a small piece of cardboard. If this is brought in on Monday then it can quarantine in time for us using it. Many thanks!

We were measuring the height of each other and ordering these measurements from shortest to tallest.

P4W Wonderful Woodland 2 October 2020

Hello everyone and welcome to this week’s blog.

We have had another very busy week, developing skills across the curriculum.

Literacy

We are becoming Reading Detectives as we continue to read our class novel ‘Ottoline and the Yellow Cat’.

Developing our vocabulary and using these interesting words in our own writing.

Exploring the qualities of a good mystery.

Looking for clues in a text – deciding what is important and what might be misleading.

Giving our opinion on a text and discussing a variety of texts (including our home texts) with a partner and in a team.

Reading for pleasure- lots of us have been enjoying the Jill Tomlinson series of books.

We are finding information about the characters and asking questions- taking notes in ‘Reading Detective’ noteook.

Developing our writing skills. Using adjectives to describe how the main characters are feeling.

Developing our knowledge of sentence structure.

Developing our joined-up cursive handwriting.

Developing our knowledge of speech marks.

Spelling- Adding the suffix ‘ed’.

Root words containing short vowel – double the final consonant then add ‘ed’.

FANTASTIC- stopped  sobbed  popped  rubbed  dropped  snapped  scrubbed dragged chopped

SECTACULARslammed  wrapped  cropped  scrubbed  admitted  controlled  permitted regretted

Ideas for home learning Write out each word in your favourite colours changing the colour for the double consonant.

For example: stopped

Maths

Rounding 2 and 3-digit numbers to the nearest 10.

Identifying numbers that would round up or down to a multiple of 10.

Ideas for learning at home- Play this game. You will need a dice. Player 1 has the numbers 10, 30 and 50. Player 2 has 20, 40 and 60. Roll the dice to form a 2-digit number and round it. The player with that multiple of 10 scores a point. The winner is the first player to reach 8.

Developing our knowledge of data handling.

Mental Agility

Creating calculation ‘fact families’

Using our addition facts for trickier calculations.

Identifying the rule in sequences

Continuing and creating sequences.

Ideas for home learning- Challenge yourself, creating addition and subtraction fact families.

Buckstone Primary School

P3MB 2.10.20

Hello everyone!

Here’s what we’ve been learning this week:

Literacy

Reading

We have continued to work on summarising stories: We have summarised ‘Waiting for Wolf’ by Sandra Dieckmann and ‘Elmer’ by David McKee this week.

‘We write about the beginning, middle and end.’

‘We can use ‘Somebody, wanted, but. so then’ to tell what’s happening.’

‘It’s fun!’

‘We like reading the story before and thinking about our ideas’

Keep practising at home by retelling the stories you read using your own words. Don’t forget to focus on the main events.

Remember to complete the reading assigned to your group.

Grammar

We practised putting capital letters and full stops in the correct places.

At home, when you are reading, take extra notice of where the full stops and capital letters are. Can you explain to someone at home why they are there?

Numeracy

We have been working on adding 2-digit numbers using ‘bridging through 10’ as a strategy. We found this quite tricky but we will keep working on this skill.

‘We need to be able to count in 10s to bridge through 10.’

We also need to know the number bonds within 10 to be able to use this strategy.

At home, play this game to work on your number bonds within 10. Choose Level 2. If you are confident with level 2, try a harder level.

http://mathszone.net/mw/number/NumberBalance/NumberBalanceGame/index.html

Have a look at this clip to help explain bridging through ten to someone at home.

Use this song to help you practise counting in 10s:

French

‘We have been counting to 13 in French’

We played a French game called ‘Onze’ to help.

‘At first, I was finding counting up to 13 tricky, but now I’ve got used to it.’

Listen, and then join in with to this song to help you learn numbers in French.

PE

We’ve continued to work on our fitness.

‘We’ve done lots of laps around the playground.’

‘It was a bit too tiring!’

We played games and worked our way round different fitness stations.

Have a lovely weekend!
