P2M Blog 05.05.23

Dear Parents/Carers,

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

• Next week is Health Week so pupils are invited to wear PE kit all week.
• Sports Day will be held on Wednesday at the Waterboard Field from 10:30-12:00.
• We have a session of Loose Parts on Thursday afternoon. Please come dressed for the weather!
• No reading books were sent home yesterday, and no books will be sent home at the end of Health week. In class we are reading poetry books but there are not enough copies to send home.
• Learning Stories were sent home today. Once you have read the newsletter and term 3 targets please send them back in.

We are also looking for donations of picture frames for an art activity. If you have an old picture frame that you no longer need, we would be very grateful if you were able to donate it. Thank you in advance!

We have had a quick but very busy week! Here is a summary of our learning. I have also added photos from our Generation Science workshop last week to the very end of this blog.

Literacy

We have continued to read and spell words using the suffix -ing. For example: feel – feeling, wait – waiting.

We have been learning to read these tricky words:

• through
• always
• country
• young
• example

We have continued to work on our own list of common words for spelling.

We have started a unit of work on poetry. Pupils are learning to read, listen to, join in with and respond to poetry that captures sensory experiences. We have been outside to experience the weather then made a list of words and phrases to describe what we could see, hear, feel, taste and smell. We enjoyed Wind Ways by Judith Nicholls and When The Wind Blows by John Foster.

Ideas for learning at home:

Keep working on the individual list of tricky words for spelling.

Write the five tricky words for reading (above) on small pieces of paper. Hide them behind an object then slowly reveal the words one letter at a time. How quickly can your child read the word?

Here is a link to an online lesson with videos and activities which will explain more about poems and to try to learn and perform one.

Remembering and performing a poem – BBC Bitesize

Maths

We have been learning to estimate the area of a shape by counting squares. We have also been learning that different shapes can have the same area (conservation of area).

We have been rounding off our work on reading clocks. We have been reading digital o’clock and half past times. We have also been using quarter past / to on analogue clocks.

Ideas for learning at home:
• Please continue to practise number formation and make sure that numbers are not reversed.
• Talk about the different times of day. For example – what time does the alarm go off in the morning? Can your child write this as a digital time?
• There is a Sum Dog challenge to revise some of the concepts covered this week. It goes live tonight!

Other areas of the curriculum

• We enjoyed an outdoor learning session which linked to our unit of work on poetry.
• We have been preparing for Sports Day as part of our PE lessons.
• As part of RSHP and Health and Wellbeing we are learning about where living things come from and about how they grow, develop and are nurtured. As part of this we are going to see first-hand how the butterfly life cycle works. We have some class caterpillars which we will look after until they turn into butterflies. We will then set them free outdoors!

Have a great weekend.

If you have not yet done so this term, please send a full change of clothes for your child. Thanks.

This week’s homework

  • revise all tricky words learned so far
  • count backwards. Pick a starting number (anything from 10 – 100 depending on the level of challenge you want) Count backwards for a few jumps. Then pick a new starting number,
  • practise telling the time in full hours and half hours – using both analogue and digital displays
  • You may choose to play this game or use this website for resources to support your child.

Independent learning

The children have been developing a wide range of skills through independent learning opportunities in class and outdoors..

Literacy.

This week we have been revising our tricky words and consonant blends learned so far. We have also been taking part in National assessments.

Please note – no reading books were sent home yesterday.

Our writing prompt this week was ‘ If I was the king….’

We continue to use core reading book resources in school as we begin to develop developing the children’s reading comprehension skills, exploring the cognitive strategies of activating, inferring, monitoring/clarifying, questioning, searching/selecting, summarizing, and visualising.

Maths and numeracy

We have been revising some of our early arithmetical learning strategies. We focused on counting backwards from a given number, and naming the number before. This still proves a challenge for many pupils.

We continued to explore time and reading clocks, looking at half past times on analogue and digital displays.

.

Looking ahead to next week

Next week is Health week. The children should come dressed for PE every day. Some of the timetabled activities will take place outdoors with no option to relocate indoors if wet, so please consider children wearing a lightweight waterproof jacket if possible. Sports day is on Wednesday morning for P1.

We will also be starting the My Body lessons from the RSHP programme.

Other areas of the curriculum

In PE we continued to practice hand eye co-ordination and timing skills when using a ball.

A reminder to please name all items of clothing and shoes, and to check names on items brought home in case your child accidentally acquires a jumper belonging to someone else.

P1M Reflective Friday 5.5.23

Hello everyone,

MATHS AND NUMERACY

This week we have been practising our numeracy skills. We were counting forwards to 30 (some of us to 50), starting at different numbers and backwards from 20. We said the number which comes after a number and put numerals in the correct order. We practised our adding skills, writing the calculations out using the correct symbols.

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

We are continuing to learn about time so please continue to  talk to your child about the days of the week and practise saying them in the correct sequence. Have a look around your home for examples of digital and analogue clocks and discuss before, after, o’clock, hour hand and minute hand.

LITERACY

This week we revised the sounds ch th wh  sh and the tricky words said and we.

This week’s dictation practised the sounds we have been revising this week.

We use Pink for Think and Green for Great to reflect on our learning.

This week we were writing about what we would do if we were king or queen. Many of the children wrote about looking after animals and being kind and some of us just wanted to wear a big crown!

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

There is no new homework this week, please continue to revise the sounds already given out and build words with them.

Please continue to practise the words on the reading vocabulary card,  a few words at a time and share the reading book your child has brought home.

PE

This week we were practising some activities for our Sports Day on the 10th of May. We were running relay races, throwing bean bags in hoops, and balancing balls on spoons.

Some examples of our learning through play. It has been amazing to see the children creating their own stories at the writing and drawing tables and making books of their own.

LOOSE PARTS

The next day for Loose Parts is  Wednesday 17 May.

We hope that you all have a lovely weekend.

(Any donations of boxes of tissues gratefully received- thanks so much to everyone who has sent a box in).

Dear Parents/Carers

We hope you had a lovely week.

Here is a summary of our learning this week.

Literacy

  • This week we have been learning to add the suffix -ing to long vowel sounds. For examples: feel – feeling, wait – waiting.
  • We have been learning to read and write the following common words: different, picture, letter, better, earth.
  • We have continued to work on our individual blocks of common words for spelling. It is great to see how motivated the children are and making good progress. Thank you for your support at home!
  • In writing we wrote the story of ‘The clocktower’.  We watched a clip and thought carefully about the story. We had a special focus on adding adjectives. Each week we are getting better at writing a beginning, middle and end.
  • We have been reading our reading books.
  • We have worked on adding punctuation to sentences: full stops, exclamation marks and question marks.
  • In handwriting we are learning how to write capital letters.

Ideas for learning at home

  • Please work on spelling the tricky words sent home at parent consultations. If your child has moved block practice the new ones. Please see below.
  • Reading books were sent home yesterday. Please continue to practise reading at home.
  • Begin to prepare the talk on a subject of your choice.

Numeracy

  • We have been recognising and naming 2 digit numbers (and for some pupils 3 digit numbers).
  • We have been sequencing numbers.
  • We have been learning to read o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to times on analogue clocks. We also have looked at o’clock and half past in a digital clock.

Ideas for learning at home

  • Practise number formation and make sure that numbers are not reversed.
  • Draw attention to clocks at home. Reinforce the fact that the minute hand is the long hand and when it is pointing to the 12 it is an o’clock time, and when it is pointing to the 6 it is a half past time. Point out that the small hour hand lies exactly on the number for o’clock but moves past the number for half past. The minute hand (long hand) is pointing to the 3 when is quarter past and the small hand has moved a little from the hour number. When it is quarter to the long hand is pointing at the 9 and the small hand ( hour hand ) is near to the next number.

You may wish to use this teaching clock if you only have digital clocks at home.

This is another game that you can use:

https://mathsframe.co.uk/en/resources/resource/116/telling-the-time

  • Talk about the different moments of the day when you do things: what time do your child wakes up, what time does your child have breakfast, what time do you leave the house to go to school, etc.
  • Ordering numbers:

https://ictgames.com/mobilePage/playYourCardsRight/index.html

Other areas

Loose parts: We had a great time outside. As it was raining when we went outside there was good teamwork and engineering while building tents to protect ourselves from the drizzle.

PE; We have continued to practice for Sports Day that will take place on Wednesday 10th May. We are practicing skipping, relays, throwing to a target and dribbling a football. We are finding tricky skipping so it would be great to practice at home.

RHSP We have been learning about the lifecycle of a butterfly. We have continued to look after our window beans, look at the roots coming out!

Science We have been learning about the skeleton (names of bones) and germs.

We had a visit from Generation Science. We learned about day and night. “I learned that the moon goes around the Earth and it takes a month” “ I learned that a year is 365 days” “ I learned basically everything: the moon and the Earth orbit around the sun” “I learned that there’s different times in different countries”

Remember:

P2 Listening and Talking Term 3

In June, the pupils in P2 will be asked to give a short talk on a subject of their choice. We are making you aware of this now so that you can support your child over the next few weeks to prepare for this.

Pupils can choose to talk about a hobby/interest, how they look after their pet, a favourite wild animal, favourite film etc.

The focus is on selecting ideas and relevant information, organising these into a logical sequence and using words which will interest the audience.

Please see guidance below on how best to prepare for this.

  1. Choose a topic.
  2. Think about the ‘W’ questions: Who (who is this about?) What (What do they do?) Why (Why is it interesting?) Where? When?
  3. You may wish to make cards for each heading with a picture and/or key words. Don’t write whole sentences to read out loud.
  4. Once the information is organised, practise delivering the talk to family at home.

Thank you in advance for your support with this.

  • School will be closed to pupils on Monday and Tuesday.
  • No reading books for next wo weeks as we will be reading poetry books in class and there are not enough books to send home.
  • Please bring an empty clean yogurt pot to plant our beans and take them home.

We hope you have a lovely long weekend!

P1B Reflective Friday 28.4.23

Good afternoon P1B!

Literacy

This week, we started our focus with initial consonant blends, looking at words starting with gr and tr. For gr, we pretend to be a bear or tiger and go “grrrr!” Mrs Cross brought in her trumpet for tr, and we found out all about how it works and also looked at other brass instruments. We practised writing words that start with those sounds and tried some of them for our dictation. We had another new reading book, and I hope you enjoy hearing your child’s learning from the week!

This week, we also continued our Block 2 tricky words with ‘as and ‘into’. When you have time at home, please practise reading and writing all the tricky words we have covered so far.

Maths and numeracy

This week during our Maths time, we individually completed our Maths SNSA on an iPad. Everyone seemed to enjoy doing the Maths Quiz and coped really well!

Other Areas

This week for PE, we went outside on Monday to practise some races for Sports Day! We did running, team relays, egg and spoon and jumping. We had a visit from Generation Science on Wednesday, and heard the story of Ella’s Wobble. We learned that sounds are made because the air wobbles, and we made our own squawkers and shakers. We all had a great time and listened really well. We also made a display for the school on the UNCRC (United Nation’s Convention of the Rights of the Child). We found out that we all have a right to have an identity, the right to learn, the right to play, the right to live with a caring family and the right to be safe. We drew pictures of what these rights might look like.

To do at home

Numeracy: recognising the numbers 1-30, counting backwards from 20or 30, writing the ‘teen’ numbers with the 1 first and remember it’s ‘teen’ not ‘ty’, counting on with our fingers, number bonds to 10

Maths: naming 3D objects, recognising coins, adding 1-10p coins together, left and right, telling the time on an analogue clock (o’clock and half past)

Literacy: being able to write our tricky words, recognising and writing the digraphssh, ch, th and wh.

General: being able to take off jumpers, open snacks and zip up coats.

General Information

Keep all the junkcoming in – it’s amazing how quickly we run out!

Please make sure your child has achange of clothesin school.

Wednesday loose partsnext week.

Thank you for your continued support and have a lovely long weekend! Apologies for the lack of photos this week.
