P2D Reflective Friday 19.05.23

Dear Parents/Carers,

We hope that you have had a good week.

Important Information:

  • We have a session of loose parts  on Tuesday 23rd May.
  • Please return Learning Stories to school ASAP.

Here is a summary of our learning.

Literacy

  • We have been working on our reading books in class. These were sent home yesterday.
  • Our tricky words this week were: music, mountain, enough and almost. We have been learning to read these words.
  • We have continued to work on our individual block of spelling words. Please continue to practice these at home.
  • In grammar we have been learning to use connectives.
  • In writing we wrote a poem based on the work we have been doing over the last few weeks in our poetry lessons.
  • We finished up our phonics block on the suffix -ing. Here are some photos which explain the rules we have been teaching the pupils.

Learning at home

  • Ask your child if they can add the suffix -ing to these root words.
  1. crawl
  2. float
  3. win
  4. boil
  5. end
  6. rub

Can they explain the spelling rule which helped them?
  • Please continue to read reading books at home and ask questions to check for understanding.
  • Also, please remember that in June, the pupils in P2 will be asked to give a short talk on a subject of their choice.  This will begin Monday 5th June. Information on this is provided below.

Pupils can choose to talk about a hobby/interest, how they look after their pet, a favourite wild animal, favourite film etc.

The focus is on selecting ideas and relevant information, organising these into a logical sequence and using words which will interest the audience.

Please see guidance below on how best to prepare for this.

1. Choose a topic.

2. Think about the ‘W’ questions: Who (who is this about?) What (What do they do?) Why (Why is it interesting?) Where? When?

3. You may wish to make cards for each heading with a picture and/or key words. Don’t write whole sentences to read out loud.

4. Once the information is organised, practise delivering the talk to family at home.

Thank you in advance for your support with this.

Maths

  • We have been revising addition strategies.
  • We have been learning to estimate and weigh items using non-standard units.

Learning at home

  • There is an addition SumDog challenge which goes live tonight.
  • Choose an object e.g. a pen. Find 3 things that are heavier and 3 things that are lighter.
  • Choose 5 items from around the house and put them in order from (estimated) heaviest to lightest.
  • Draw attention to the weight of different items when you are cooking / baking.

Other areas of the curriculum

  • As part of our equalities focus for this term, we had an interesting and informative talk on racism.
  • As part of the RSHP programme we have been talking about being confident in our bodies. We read a poem called ‘I’m glad I’m me’ and discussed the importance of being positive about your body and also the fact that your body is your body (body autonomy).
  • French: we have revised  numbers to 10 and worked on greetings: Bonjour, Ça va, Comment tu t’appelles? etc.

We hope you have a lovely long weekend!

Listening and Talking Presentation – My Favourite Place
As part of our literacy learning, we would like each learner to deliver a talk about their favourite place. This could be anywhere – perhaps the park, a holiday destination or even your bedroom! Talks should last no more than two minutes, and learners can bring in up to 3 things to show during the presentation if they wish to do so. Please bear in mind that we would like the children to talk informally about their favourite place and not read a prepared script, so no need to type or write anything out for them. We won’t be using powerpoints/technology to deliver our talks. We will begin to hear the talks on Monday 29th May, so please have them ready for then. Thank you and I look forward to hearing all about the favourite places!

.

This week’s homework

  • learn to spell the tricky words here and of
  • complete the activities outlined on the home learning sheet
  • practice instant recall of the Number bonds that make 10. Pupils should be able to quickly name the partner number to a given number without counting on or using fingers. Memorise these facts.
  • you may choose to play this game to support revision. Start by choosing the number bonds to ten option. Up the level of challenge to 20 if required.

Independent learning

The children have been developing a wide range of skills through independent learning opportunities in class and outdoors.. we have enjoyed having warm sunny weather allowing us to be outside more than usual.

Literacy.

This week we have been learning to blend initial consonants with the letter l, eg bl, cl, fl,

Our writing prompt this week was ‘ My planet….’

We continue to use core reading book resources in school as we begin to develop developing the children’s reading comprehension skills, exploring the cognitive strategies of activating, inferring, monitoring/clarifying, questioning, searching/selecting, summarizing, and visualising.

Maths and numeracy

We have been doing some speedy adding – how quickly can you answer these sums…..

7+2= 3+6= 12+6= (etc, with totals up to 20 for most pupils)

We have also been revising and assessing our knowledge of number bonds to 10. For most pupils we will be continuing to revise this next week. Please support your child with this learning at home.

.

Looking ahead to next week

P1B Reflective Friday 12.5.23

Good afternoon P1B!

Literacy

This week, we continued with digraph and consonant blends revision. For our reading this week, we read a non-fiction book. We talked about how a non-fiction book is filled with real and true information/facts. We had a mixture of books that were about things such as calendars, animals and exercise.

Maths and numeracy

This week during our Maths time, we revised o’clock and half past times, and did a SEAL summary to see how we are doing with our SEAL learning so far. After a break to do our time topic, we will be back to SEAL groups next week. On our new class iPads, we played an addition game and used numicon to help work out the tricker sums.

Other Areas

We have had a super busy and fun week this week for Health Week! We all did so well at Sports Day, trying our hardest and supporting our friends. All of us took part in some fruit tasting with Mrs Shaw too! On Thursday, we had a dance class with Simon Says Dance which we all loved and left with huge smiles on our faces. Today, we had Multisports AND the P1 Scootathon – phewf! In class, we talked about the importance of eating fruit and vegetables and exercising. We also talked about My Body as part of the national RSHP programme. We learned names for some of our body parts and drew them on Bob and Babs! “My body belongs to ME!” was our main learning focus.

To do at home

Numeracy: recognising the numbers 1-30, counting backwards from 20 or 30, writing the ‘teen’ numbers with the 1 first and remember it’s ‘teen’ not ‘ty’, counting on with our fingers, number bonds to 10

Maths: naming 3D objects, adding 1-10p coins together, left and right, telling the time on an analogue clock (o’clock and half past)

Literacy: being able to write our tricky words, recognising and writing the digraphs sh, ch, th and wh.

General: being able to take off jumpers, open snacks and zip up coats.

General Information

Keep all the junk coming in – it’s amazing how quickly we run out!

Loose parts on Wednesday next week.

Thank you for your support and enjoy the sunshine tomorrow!

This week’s homework

  • revise all tricky words learned so far
  • count backwards. Pick a starting number (anything from 10 – 100 depending on the level of challenge you want) Count backwards for a few jumps. Then pick a new starting number.

Health week

This week has been ‘Health week’ and we have had so many exciting activities including sports day, a multisports session, a visit from Simon Says Dance, Scootathon and fruit tasting. In the classroom we have been learning to name the parts of our body, and discussing how to keep our bodies clean.

We read the story ‘ Miles is the boss of his own body

Literacy.

This week we have had a spelling test on our Block one tricky words and those taught from block two so far.

Our writing prompt this week was ‘ Sports day….’

We continue to use core reading book resources in school as we begin to develop developing the children’s reading comprehension skills, exploring the cognitive strategies of activating, inferring, monitoring/clarifying, questioning, searching/selecting, summarizing, and visualising.

Maths and numeracy

We have been continuing to revise and being assessed on some of our early arithmetical learning strategies. We focused on counting backwards from a given number, and naming the number before. This still proves a challenge for many pupils.

We also tried answering some written addition calculations as quickly as possible using recall of number facts.

.

Looking ahead to next week

Next week we have loose parts learning on Wednesday.

We are still welcoming donations of clean recycling for our stem area.

Please remember to return all reading books on Monday. We are still missing a few from the last two weeks and would appreciate if you could have a quick check at home for any outstanding returns. Thanks

Other areas of the curriculum

We have enjoyed watching our caterpillars grow bigger each day.

A reminder to please name all items of clothing and shoes, and to check names on items brought home in case your child accidentally acquires a jumper belonging to someone else.

P1M Reflective Friday 12.5.23

Hello everyone,

MATHS AND NUMERACY

This week we have been learning about O’ clock times using analogue and digital clocks. We matched analogue times to digital times on a worksheet and some of us learned about half past.  We continued to practise the months of the year and tried to link them to the seasons.

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

Talk to your child about O’ clock times and try to spot analogue and digital clocks when you are out and about.

We talk about our class calendar every morning  and discuss today, yesterday, and tomorrow. Please talk about the days of the week with your child and discuss what day it is.

LITERACY

This week we revised the sounds rk nt ng nk tr gr and the tricky words she and be.

This week’s dictation practised the sounds we have been revising this week.

We use Pink for Think and Green for Great to reflect on our learning.

This week we were writing about Sports Day and which activity  we had enjoyed the most.

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

There is no new homework this week, please continue to revise the sounds already given out and build words with them.

Please continue to practise the words on the reading vocabulary card,  a few words at a time and share the reading book your child has brought home.

HEALTH WEEK

We began our Health Week with a fruit tasting.

We were lucky with the weather and managed to have Sports Day without getting wet.

As part of Relationships, Sexual Health, and parenthood, we have been naming body parts, completing diagrams, and singing songs to help us learn.

The whole of Primary One took part in Simon Says Dance and everybody enjoyed showing their dance moves.

In the gym hall we played games with Ryan which involved lots of different movement and helped us to stay fit.

The whole of Primary One was outside for a giant scootathon on Friday morning.

LOOSE PARTS

The next day for Loose Parts is  Wednesday 17 May.

We hope that you all have a lovely weekend.

(Any donations of boxes of tissues gratefully received- thanks so much to everyone who has sent a box in).

Dear Parents/Carers,

We hope you had a nice week. We have had an amazing one!

Health week has been brilliant and Sports Day has been our highlight!

This is a summary of our learning.

Other areas of the curriculum

What a great time we had at Sports Day! Thank you to those of you who were able to come and support your child.

On Tuesday we had an athletics session with Mr Segall ( our Active Schools coordinator). This focused on sprinting technique and the difference on our bodies when running for endurance.

On Thursday we had a Lacrosse session with Zoe Dickson and a dance session with Simon says Dance. The children had a fantastic time. We also enjoyed a brilliant session of Loose Parts in the sunshine!

On Friday we had a Multisport session.

We also have done baking.

Science: we have learned about inheritance by comparing dog breeds and generations of dogs. We are beginning to understand how characteristics are inherited. We had the opportunity to look at our teachers’ dogs and think about their characteristics.

RSHP: We have been learning about our body and to identify the correct words for body parts.

Maths

We have started learning about the concept of area and how to estimate it by using squares. We have noticed that different shapes can have the same area.

Literacy

We have continued our focus on Poetry. Thinking about what we feel and using different words (adjectives) to describe them.

In phonics we have been learning that when adding the suffix -ing  to words containing short vowel followed by just one consonant we need to double the consonant and add -ing: run – running, shop- shopping, cut-cutting, etc.

We liked listening to this song:

Double the Last Consonant Spelling Rule Song – YouTube

In handwriting we have continued to work on writing capital letters and cursive lower-case letters.

As you can see it has been a full-on week with lots of different experiences!! Some photos are added to the end of this blog.

Have a nice weekend!

P1B Reflective Friday 5.5.23

Good afternoon P1B!

Literacy

This week, we did some revision of digraphs and final consonant blends such as sh, ch, ng and nk.

We also continued our Block 2 tricky words with ‘all’ and ‘her’. Please keep going with learning to read and write all of the tricky words we have done so far – repetition is key!

For writing, we thought about dinosaurs and had some great drawings and pieces of writing. Some of us wrote about fossils, or riding dinosaurs, or Steggy!

Maths and numeracy

This week during our Maths time, we continued with our individual National Standardised Assessments (NSA), and did some revision on time for o’clock and half past.

Other Areas

For our PE time on Thursday with Mrs Conlin, we practised our races for Sports Day. We also had a great Loose Parts session on Wednesday afternoon. Various children in the class have shown an interest in dinosaurs and fossils, so our classroom and learning this week had a ‘dino theme’. We matched dinosaur descriptions to pictures, used numicon to make a stegosaurus and found fossils, just like palaeontologists! On Friday, we talked about the King’s Coronation and the history of the event.

Here are some pictures of some of our learning in the P1 Area, courtesy of Mrs Shaw!

Next week is Health Week! We have lots of activities planned, including Sports Day, Multisports and Simon Says Dance! Children are encouraged to come to school everyday in PE kit. We will be going out in all weathers, so would advise bringing a lightweight waterprrof! We will also be starting our My Body topic as part of the RSHP programme.

No loose parts next week.

Thank you for your continued support and have a lovely long weekend!
