P1M Reflective Friday

Hello everyone,

MATHS AND NUMERACY

In numeracy we have been counting forwards up to 100, sequencing numerals, saying alternate numbers, identifying numbers and counting items in two screened collections.

We have continued to learn about number bonds to 10 and some of us have been thinking about number bonds to 20.

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

Practise number bonds to 10:

0+10=10

1+9=10

2+8=10 etc.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Use the game above to help. If you feel confident with number bonds to 10, try playing the game using number bonds to 20.

LITERACY

This week we have been learning to blend an initial consonant with the letter s :sm sw sn sp st and the tricky words one and you.

We used our sense of smell to see if we could guess what was in the tubs.

This week’s dictation practised the blend we have been revising this week.

We use Pink for Think and Green for Great to reflect on our learning.

This week we were thinking about what we enjoyed in Primary One and what we were looking forward to in Primary Two.

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

Please see the sheet your child has brought home today and complete the suggested activities.

Listening and Talking Presentation – My Favourite Place
As part of our literacy learning, we would like each learner to deliver a talk about their favourite place. This could be anywhere – perhaps the park, a holiday destination or even your bedroom! Talks should last no more than two minutes, and learners can bring in up to 3 things to show during the presentation if they wish to do so. We won’t be using powerpoints/technology to deliver our talks. Please don’t bring a script to read out, you may have some bullet points on a piece of paper to help you remember if you would find that helpful.  We will begin to hear the Masterminds’ talks on Monday 29th May, so please have them ready for then. Thank you and we look forward to hearing all about your favourite places!

RSHP

We started learning about the parts of a plant and labelled the names for the different parts on a diagram.

We talked about being the boss of our own bodies and read and discussed the story ‘Miles is the Boss of His Body’ by Abbie Schiller and Samantha Kurtzman-Counter.

PE

We have continued to practise ball skills by kicking and dribbling the ball and playing games.

FRENCH

We have been learning the days of the week in French as we talk about our calendar together.

We learned three new colours:

Marron- brown

Violet – purple

Rose – pink

LOOSE PARTS

We enjoyed building, exploring, and creating across the Primary One stage.

The next day for Loose Parts is  Monday 29 May.

LEARNING THROUGH PLAY

We hope that you all have a lovely weekend.

Thanks so much to everyone who has sent a box of tissues in, they are much appreciated.

Listening and Talking Presentation – My Favourite Place
Please be ready to share your talk next week.

Please bear in mind that we would like the children to talk informally about their favourite place and not read a prepared script, so no need to type or write anything out for them. We won’t be using powerpoints/technology to deliver our talks. We will begin to hear the talks on Monday 29th May, so please have them ready for then. Thank you and I look forward to hearing all about the favourite places!

.

This week’s homework

  • learn to spell the tricky words one and you
  • complete the activities outlined on the home learning sheet – this sheet will cover next week as well.
  • practice instant recall of the Number bonds that make 10. Pupils should be able to quickly name the partner number to a given number without counting on or using fingers. Memorise these facts.
  • you may choose to play this game to support revision. Start by choosing the number bonds to ten option. Up the level of challenge to 20 if required.

Independent learning

The children have been developing a wide range of skills through independent learning opportunities in class and outdoors.. we have enjoyed having warm sunny weather allowing us to be outside more than usual.

Literacy.

This week we have been learning to blend initial consonants with the letter s – eg st, sm, sn,

We continue to use core reading book resources in school as we begin to develop developing the children’s reading comprehension skills, exploring the cognitive strategies of activating, inferring, monitoring/clarifying, questioning, searching/selecting, summarizing, and visualising.

Maths and numeracy

We have been doing some speedy adding – how quickly can you answer these sums…..7+2= 3+6= 12+6=

We have enjoyed using the ipads to challenge ourselves with addition calculations

We have also been revising and assessing our knowledge of number bonds to 10. For most pupils we will be continuing to revise this next week. Please support your child with this learning at home.

.

Looking ahead to next week

Be prepared to share your talk about your favourite place

Loose Parts on Monday

Other areas of the curriculum

In PE we worked on developing core strength, timing and reflexes.

Our caterpillars have formed Chrysalises – we are excited to watch the next stage of their transformation.

A reminder to please name all items of clothing and shoes, and to check names on items brought home in case your child accidentally acquires a jumper belonging to someone else.

Dear Parents/Carers,

We hope you had a nice week.

This is a summary of our learning:

Maths

We have explored measurement related to height and length. We have used non-standard and standard units to measure; we have learned how to use a ruler and measure in centimetres.

We have practiced subtraction skills.

You can practice subtraction at home using this website:

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/subtraction-grids

Literacy

At writing we have continued our focus on Poetry. We have written a diamante poem: cat to dog. We are learning what is an adjective (describing word), a verb (doing word) and a name.

At phonics we have been learning to add -ing to words that end with an e. If a word ends in ‘e’, drop the ‘e’ when adding ‘-ing’: fake / faking, slide/ sliding, etc. The first vowel is always long (says its name) because there is only 1 consonant to separate the vowels. There is only 1 guard!

On handwriting we have continued to work on writing capital letters and cursive lower-case letters.

We have been learning to read these tricky words: complete, family, area and question. Please continue to practice at home the tricky words (children are aware in which block they are working at the moment).  Every week we mix the classes and we have groups based on the block of tricky words the children are working on; this has been very motivating for the children as they work hard to move up a block. Practicing at home makes a huge difference!

Other areas

We had Loose Parts on Tuesday afternoon. It is great to see how the children are building more complex structures and  how the work as a team.

Science: we have learned about our senses; We have explored my senses and discussed their reliability and limitations in responding to the environment. We have discuss how we can use our senses to detect information and explained how they help to keep people safe.

RSHP: We have been learning about Privacy and the PANTS rule.

As you know on Sunday I will be taking part on the Edinburgh Marathon Relay with Mrs Imrie, Miss Dowds, Mrs Tweedie, Mr Campbell, Ms Hastie and Miss Davidson. I will be running the first leg for the Stones team: The Royal Leg! Thank you to all of you for your support!

Listening and Talking Presentation/Talk – My Favourite Place – ready for Monday!!!

Please ensure it is a prepared talk rather than reading from a ‘script’. Bullet points/pictures as prompts would be fine! We will begin to hear the Bright Sparks’ talks on Monday 29thMay, so please have them ready for then. Thank you and I look forward to hearing all about the favourite places!

Good afternoon P1B!

Literacy

This week, we focussed on initial blends starting with s for example ‘st’, ‘sl’, ‘sm’ and ‘sn’.We spent time practising writing some words that start with these blends. We had tubs of different smells in the classroom, and we had to guess what they were! During our writing time, we reflected on something we enjoyed in P1 and something we are looking forward to in P2. We learned 2 new tricky words – one and you. Please continue to practise writing the tricky words at home!

Maths and numeracy

This week, we focused on partitioning numbers. Some of us thought about different ways of making numbers 1-10, and some of us started to partition two-digit numbers into tens and units.

Other Areas

This week, we continued with our electricity topic. We talked about how to stay safe, things we should do around electricity and things we shouldn’t do. We made an amazing display that show visitors to our classroom how to stay safe. In the nice weather, we opened up the courtyard as a play zone and had lots of teamwork, problem solving and motor skills.

To do at home

MY FAVOURITE PLACE TALK

Numeracy: recognising the numbers 1-100, counting backwards from 30, writing the ‘teen’ numbers with the 1 first and remember it’s ‘teen’ not ‘ty’, counting on with our fingers, number bonds to 10

Maths: adding 1-10p coins together, left and right, telling the time on an analogue clock (o’clock and half past)

Literacy: being able to write our tricky words, recognising and writing the digraph sh, ch, th and wh.

General: being able to take off jumpers, open snacks and zip up coats.

General Information

Keep all the junk coming in – it’s amazing how quickly we run out!

Loose parts on Monday!

Thank you for your support and enjoy your weekend!

Listening and Talking Presentation/Talk – My Favourite Place

As part of our literacy learning, we would like each learner to deliver a talk to the class about their favourite place. This could be anywhere – perhaps the park, a holiday destination or even your bedroom! Literacy

This week, we focussed on initial blends ending in l, for example ‘cl’, ‘fl’, ‘bl’ and ‘pl’. We spent time trying to find words that start with these blends in our library books. In our writing this week, we designed our own planet! We had doggy-lands, sweetie worlds, pink planets and crazy planets! Some of us also chose to do some planet artwork in the classroom. We played ‘cleaning’ tig in PE and practised our mark-making and cutting skills with flower pictures. We did a wee tricky word quiz this morning to see how we are getting on with writing our block 2 tricky words. The ones most of us weren’t sure about were ‘there’, ‘were’, ‘come’, ‘some’, ‘said’ and ‘her’. Please continue to practise writing the tricky words at home! On Tuesday mornings, we have Mrs Petit, a retired headteacher, supporting us in our classroom. She was delighted this week to hear our reading skills, especially since it was the first time seeing our new book!

Maths and numeracy

This week, we returned to SEAL groups. We focussed on adding two collections and making equal groups. We are getting used to the language/difference between wording such as ‘making 2 groups’ and ‘making groups of 2’. As a class, we also practised seeing number patterns on a 100-square, and had to fill in some blanks. We all did well at working out which numbers were missing.

Other Areas

This week, we started our electricity topic. We sorted toys and household items into whether they were electric or manual. We learned that an object can be electric if it plugs into the wall or if it has a battery. We had a lovely loose part session in the sun on Wednesday afternoon – lots of great teamwork and creativity! Lots of creativity in the P1 area and the small bricks this week too.

Hello everyone,

MATHS AND NUMERACY

This week we have been assessing what we know about time.

In numeracy we have been counting backwards from 30 starting at different numbers, recognising numbers to 50, describing equal shares, ordering numbers, and adding together two collections of objects.

We played a game on the iPad to help us practise our number bonds to 10.

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

Practise number bonds to 10:

0+10=10

1+9=10

2+8=10 etc.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Use the game above to help.

If your child is confident with the number bonds to 10, try number bonds to 20.

LITERACY

This week we have been learning to blend an initial consonant with the letter l :cl bl fl sl gl and the tricky words here and of.

This week’s dictation practised the blend we have been revising this week.

We use Pink for Think and Green for Great to reflect on our learning.

This week we were writing about black animals to practise our blend.

Blog Post 19.05.23

Dear Parents/Carers,

We hope that you have had a good week.

Important Information:

  • We have a session of loose parts  on Tuesday 23rd May.
  • Please return Learning Stories to school ASAP.

Here is a summary of our learning.

Literacy

  • We have been working on our reading books in class. These were sent home yesterday.
  • Our tricky words this week were: music, mountain, enough and almost. We have been learning to read these words.
  • We have continued to work on our individual block of spelling words.
  • In grammar we have been learning to use connectives.
  • In writing we wrote a poem based on the work we have been doing over the last few weeks in our poetry lessons.
  • We finished up our phonics block on the suffix -ing. Here are some photos which explain the rules we have been teaching the pupils.

Learning at home

Ask your child if they can add the suffix -ing to these root words.

  1. crawl
  2. float
  3. win
  4. boil
  5. end
  6. rub

Can they explain the spelling rule which helped them?

Please continue to read reading books at home and ask questions to check for understanding.

Also, please remember that in June, the pupils in P2 will be asked to give a short talk on a subject of their choice.  This will begin Monday 5th June. Information on this is provided below.

Pupils can choose to talk about a hobby/interest, how they look after their pet, a favourite wild animal, favourite film etc.

The focus is on selecting ideas and relevant information, organising these into a logical sequence and using words which will interest the audience.

Please see guidance below on how best to prepare for this.

1. Choose a topic.

2. Think about the ‘W’ questions: Who (who is this about?) What (What do they do?) Why (Why is it interesting?) Where? When?

3. You may wish to make cards for each heading with a picture and/or key words. Don’t write whole sentences to read out loud.

4. Once the information is organised, practise delivering the talk to family at home.

Thank you in advance for your support with this.

Maths

  • We have been revising addition strategies.
  • We have been learning to estimate and weigh items using non-standard units.

Learning at home

  • There is an addition SumDog challenge which goes live tonight.
  • Choose an object e.g. a pen. Find 3 things that are heavier and 3 things that are lighter.
  • Choose 5 items from around the house and put them in order from (estimated) heaviest to lightest.
  • Draw attention to the weight of different items when you are cooking / baking.

Other areas of the curriculum

  • As part of our equalities focus for this term, we had an interesting and informative talk on racism.
  • As part of the RSHP programme we have been talking about being confident in our bodies. We read a poem called ‘I’m glad I’m me’ and discussed the importance of being positive about your body and also the fact that your body is your body (body autonomy).

Here are a few photos from the last few weeks.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs McFarlane
