Learning together at home Monday 7th June

Welcome back to our online learning. We hope you had a great weekend and managed to find a way to enjoy the sunshine.

Every day this week we will post our blog the evening before (therefore there will be three posts today, this one, one for todays learning and one for tomorrow’s learning) . We think that this will help parents to be ready for the next day. Please don’t worry if you can’t do the home learning, we rather have happy families and children than stressed and unhappy ones!

We will provide an activity for Literacy, one for Numeracy and one other area a day. Please work in the way that best suits your family needs and keep in touch if you need anything (via the school email address). We also understand that some children might be ill therefore your child should not be doing work when unwell and should not try to the work that hasn’t been done while unwell.

We will meet every day at 9.30 and we will send you the link for this meeting on a daily basis. Microphones should be muted when joining the meeting. Please for today’s meeting bring paper and pencil/pen or whiteboard and whiteboard pen.

Feel free to post your child’s work on your child’s e-learning journal. We will politely ask you to only do one post a day ( you can add up to five photos on each post!).

Your reading book is already available on your child’s e- learning journal. We are aware that this way you have to look at two websites however this is the only way we can keep your child’s information private and available to you. As you know it is only once a week that we provide a reading book so you don’t need to look every day on the e-journals for home learning information.

We will post again at 8.30 with today’s work.

Looking forward to seeing you all at 9.30!

P1 Tigers reflective Friday 28th May 2021

Good morning. We hope you are all well.

Another busy week for us.

Look what we have been learning this week!:

Our sounds this week were final consonant blends st and rk, our tricky word was

why.

We have been working on our writing skills. Our focus this week was My friend.

We have continued to work on our reading skills. This week our books are fact books. We have been working on discussing new words and looking for new information. Your child took the book yesterday. This is an opportunity for you to discuss the learning.

Home learning ideas

  • Practice the new sounds using the sheet below
  • You could help to make the shopping list.
  • Show an adult what you have learned with your reading book this week.
  • Practise spelling all the tricky words so far: how many can you write from memory ? Please continue to practice these
  • Be Geraldine……. ” Off she went around the house to find something ENDing with st, rk etc ” How many things can you find? You could make a list of all the things you find.
  • Practise your letter formation – are there any letters you find tricky to write ?
  • Learn to spell and write your surname.

Maths

This week our focus has been subtraction from 10 ( from 20 for some).

Please continue to practice this skill at home: children can use their fingers, items and/or a number line.

Home learning ideas

  • Count backwards from 30 to 10 ( or 100 – 30)

Other areas

We have been looking at our tadpoles that are growing legs now.

Our caterpillars have built their cocoons. We are very excited about this!

News

  • Next week we will be joining Potato needs a bath online show as part of the Imaginate Festival. We are looking forward to this experience. To prepare for it we are going to celebrate Potato’s birthday, We are all invited therefore we all need to bring a fruit or vegetable on Wednesday as we will make party hats for them.
  • Please continue to label all your children’s items.
  • If you would like to change your child’s start or finishing times (even for one day) this needs to be approved by the SMT. It should be adults who email the school to ask permission to Management, unfortunately we cannot rely on children’s messages. Thank you for your understanding on this matter.

Have a lovely weekend!

P1 Tigers Reflective Friday 14th May 2021

Good morning!

We hope you all had a busy and healthy week as ours!

As you know this week we have celebrated Health week and we have learned lots of things.

Health week

We have been learning about how to keep ourselves safe: learning when to call 999, what is safe to eat and what is not safe to eat and touch.

We have been learning about different foods.

We have learned about the wellbeing indicators: safe, healthy, achieving, nurtured, included, active, respected and responsible. Every day we have discussed a couple of the indicators, their meaning and what they mean to each of us.

We have learned about the names of different parts of our body.

And last but not least we had a fab day a Sports Day!!!

Literacy

This week we have learned two final consonant blends: nk and ng. Our tricky words are over and any.

For our nk sound we had lots of pink items at the craft table, we used links to link, we used ink.

For our ng sound we made rings, we painted with string and we sang!

Our writing was ” I feel healthy when”.

We have continued to develop our reading skills at our reading groups.

Home learning ideas

  • Ask your child to read the reading book that we have been working at home this book.
  • Home learning sounds ( This week and last week’s sounds). Practice to make words using all the sounds we have learned so far.

Numeracy

We have continue to work on our numeracy skills through our SEAL programme.

Learning together at home. Thursday 6th May

Good morning Tigers!

Are you ready to learn from home?

We are looking forward to seeing you at 9.30 (link has been emailed to all P1 T parents)

We have prepared some learning for you.

Literacy

Today is Thursday and on Thursday we do writing. At 9.30 we will explain how to do it. But here is some guidance too

Today we would like you to write about ‘ Foods I like to eat’

(Template provided yesterday on purple folder)

Learning Intention (What we are learning today):

  •  We are learning to write in sentences.

Success Criteria (How can I show that I have learned and understood):

  • I can put capital letters in the right place.
  • I can use finger spaces.
  • I can use full stops.
  • I can sound out the words to try to write them.
  • I can write a sentence that makes sense.

Today you are going to write about ‘Foods I like to eat’

First talk to an adult about foods you like to eat: You could tell the adult who is with you which foods do you like, you can start by making a list. Think about what do you want Mrs Cross and Mrs de Bonrostro to know ( we are your audience!). You can name a few and then choose one that you would like us to know more about.

Draw a detailed picture (you don’t have to colour it in, black pen drawing if you have one), think about what it looks like, when and where do you eat it. We would love to see a picture of food that you like to eat. (you could take a photo of your work and upload it on the e-learning journal once you have finished).

Now you can try to write a few sentences:

  • The adult who is helping you can write the sentences starters (written below in cursive) so you can copy them. However, if you want a bit of a challenge try to sound out the words and write them without help (Adult, please don’t focus on correcting the spelling to start with if it is phonetically correct).
  • Sentence starters: Then start by: The foods I like to eat are…  Tell me everything you can about it: My favourite food is… Then tell me what you like about it: I like …because….
  • Your child should be able to write independently the worked tricky words (such as I, she, he, etc)
  • You could give your child a bank of words to use (please try not to add CVC words or our tricky words)

Non-negotiables (adult you could write a simple sentence and model it for your child):

  • Capital letter at the beginning of a sentence.
  • Full stop at the end of a sentence.
  • Finger spaces between words.

We would love to see your amazing writing.

Please write the title and date for your child and then chose from one of the following:

  • Easiest: Adult to scribe for you and you copy the sentence underneath. You can also provide the beginning of the sentence and ask your child to write a CVC word ( consonant, vowel, consonant). Example: Child is provided with the sentence I like soup because is…(child can write hot independently)
  • Medium: Attempt to write independently with adult supporting with trickier words.
  • Trickiest: Write independently. Try to write at least 4 sentences.

If you would like an extra activity, your child took home a sheet with his/her name written on it and a target. Your child could work on the given target.

Numeracy

We are working on measurement. In class yesterday we started to learn about capacity. We are experimenting with everyday items as units of measure to
investigate and compare sizes and amounts in our environment, sharing our findings with others. We are estimating, measuring the capacity of familiar objects using a range of appropriate non-standard units.

Please find the worksheet attached (it went home yesterday too)

Health and Wellbeing (Food technology)

Task: To help to prepare a healthy snack or meal. You could help to prepare a sandwich (spread butter) and/or chop vegetables and/ or fruit.

We would like you to wash your hands before preparing food, using utensils safely ( knife to chop or to spread) and washing the dishes after eating your food.

Please, if you can, ask an adult to take a photo of you preparing the food and to upload it on the e- journal. We would love to see all our chefs!

On Friday we will be playing with Loose parts outside, remember to wear appropriate clothes for outdoor messy play!

Have a super day!

P1 Tigers Reflective Friday 30th April

Good morning! We hope you all had a lovely week.

We have been very busy again this week.

Here is what we have been learning at school:

Literacy

This week we have learned three consonant blends: sp, st and sw. Our tricky words are every and two.

For the sp sound we made spiders and we played with spaghetti (we loved it!). We also looked at Mrs de Bonrostro’s Spanish flag, it was a big flag!

For the st sound we played with the stamps and we made sticky stars. We did a sticky sticks outdoors!

For the sw sound we did swans and sweet houses! We were great at following instructions and no eating the sweets…we think! We watched some fragments of the Swan lake ballet and we did the Swan lake dance, look at us dancing together! We were swinging outside too.

At writing we wrote about our bedrooms. The focus was to use describing words and writing short sentences using finger spaces, capital letters at the start of a sentence and full stops at the end of a sentence.

Home learning Ideas

  • We have noticed that most children can write their own names however the letter formation is not correct. The children have learned to this when they were younger so some letters are still formed incorrectly. It would be great if you can practice this at home.
  • You could use the home learning sheet to make words with the sounds that we have worked on.
  • Ask your child to read the read book that it went home on Thursday. We have been reading it during the week at school.

Numeracy

We have been revising our knowledge on Money ( work that we did while Learning at home). We also have started to work on measurement.

We have continued to work on our Numeracy skills through SEAL.

Home learning Ideas

  • You could use real coins to create amounts up to 10p and practice to give change within 10p. When using coins focus on colour, size and shape rather than looking at the number on the coins as some of them don’t have it and this can create confusion. Talk about value.
  • You can measure items in your house/ garden using their hands, feet or any other object.
  • You could do some baking and discuss about measuring while doing so.
  • You could try this game at home: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/early-years/lets-compare

Other areas

PE

On Monday Mr Segall, our Active schools coordinator, worked with us and we did lots of games. We followed instructions and worked on balance and fitness.

  • On Wednesday please check your child’s purple folder as we will be sending some work home that would be explained on Thursday’s blog.
  • Please remember to send to school labelled spare clothes for your child. Please check if you have at home school sweatshirt that doesn’t belong to your child as we have one missing and it is not at school. Thank you!
  • See below a photo of different items unlabelled that have not been claimed Please let us know if any of them belong to your child.

We hope you have a lovely long weekend!

P1 Tigers Reflective Thursday 1st April

We made it! We had an amazing term. It was been a different one as we started learning from home but we were lucky to come back to school and we had a great time learning together.

This is this week’s learning:

Literacy

This week we have been learning three initial blends: fl, gl and pl. Our tricky words were do and as, now we have worked on all the tricky words from block 2. We have sent home a sheet with the words the children could work at home.

For fl we did flying kites. We took our kites outside and they flew!

We also played with flour!

For gl we did glittery glasses.

We played with gloop.

For pl we did plates with pl words.

This week our writing focus has been writing about chicks.

We have continued to work on our reading books at school. We are working on different reading skills not only decoding and blending: fluency, comprehension, inference, making connections, synthetizing, increasing vocabulary, working memory and attention. Remember that this week our reading books will not go home.

Home Learning ideas

  • Practice this week’s sounds:
  • Continue to practice building words and reading words with the sounds worked on so far.
  • Practice the tricky words that your child has taken home today on his/her purple folder.

Numeracy

We have been learning about Position and Movement. We are learning to use simple directions and describe positions in games in movement, games and using technology. We have learned to programme Bee Bots and to use the Bee Bots app i our iPads.

We have continued to work on our numeracy skills using our SEAL programme. We have been working on sharing equally, ordering numbers, addition with a missing addend, etc.

Home learning ideas

  • Continue to practice number recognition, counting skills.

Other areas

RME

We have learned about the Easter Story. We are becoming aware of the importance of celebrations, festivals and customs in Christian people’s lives.

Music

We have been singing outdoors with Charlie. We have also done two online sessions with Sarah from Sing for Smiles.

P1T Reflective Friday Friday 16th October

Good morning! We hope you had a lovely week. We had a busy week full of learning and fun, this is what we have been up to:

Literacy

  • We have continued to use reading books in school. We are learning how to make predictions about a text with the information we have in the text and in the illustrations, we are using the words that are on our books to make sentences. We are working very hard on developing all our reading skills.
  • We continue to introduce and reinforce some single sounds and have been using them to create and read words. This week’s letters were o and g, and we made words including hot, not, mop, dog and got.
  • We enjoy listening to and discussing a wide range of texts.
  • We have continued to work on our pre -writing skills.
  • This week our writing was: ‘I am outside. It is Autumn’ . We did our writing after our wonderful walk in the woods. Look at our detailed drawings!

Home learning ideas

Please support us by spending time at home practising the skills of blending sounds to create and read words. Not too long but a little time every day is the best way to do it.

Please check your child’s purple folder regularly as occasionally we will send home learning ideas.

  • Download the document below.   On the sheet you will find the letters we have been learning this week along with a list of words to create. You can choose to print the sheet, or simply write out the letters of small pieces of paper. Use the letter cards to create simple words and ask your child to firstly, identify each sound, count how many sounds (phonemes) they hear, then blend or squish the sounds together into one word. Next, say a word which can be made using the letters. say it slowly and clearly – asking your child to identify the sounds they can hear before they ‘make’ the word with the cards.
  • Go on a letter hunt. Look around you for places where you can see any of the letters you know. Remember to say the pure sound of the letter not the name. ( so a= ah, not ay )
  • Ask an adult to write all the names of the people in your family. Who has an ‘i’ in their name….. who has an ‘ a’ (etc)
  • Play a game of “I spy” with our focus sounds.
  • Encourage your child to make their name in different ways: in the sand, with flour, play dough, etc.
  • If your child cannot yet write their own name, please practise this at home. Lower case letter please ( apart from the initial letter of course)
  • Spend time reading books at home. Reading to your child is an excellent way of increasing your child’s vocabulary. You could use the reading caterpillar that we sent in the purple folder to make questions about the text you read to your child.

Numeracy

  • We have been exploring numbers to 10 20, or 30.
  • We have been practising instantly making and recognising finger patterns. Doing it on our head ( the bunny ears game) makes it a bit tricky as we can’t see our fingers, we just have to feel the pattern. We have explored doing doubles to 5.
  • We have explored numbers to 10 (and beyond for some).
  • We have worked on sequencing numbers.
  • We have worked on counting forwards and backwards from different starting points.
  • We have been naming the next number in a forwards or backwards sequence
  • We have learning how to make a number (3-10) using different fingers: for 6 : 2 and 4, 5 and 1, 3 and 3. We have started doing the same using counters (0-10), we will work on number bonds to 10 after the holidays.
How many cheerios are in the stick?…play the video and you will find out!
Counting skills and fine motor skills!

Home learning ideas

  • We listened to this song. Maybe you would like to listen to it at home:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHuuuh9GgP8
  • Count items using 1-1 correspondence. Put down a quantity of small items, for example raisins, buttons, counters, small stones or lego bricks. Ask your child to count them carefully, pointing to, or moving each one in turn. can they count the total accurately? Increase the level of challenge by using a larger collection.
  • Number hunt: Ask your child to look for specific numbers in the street: buses, house numbers and ask your child to say the number that goes after and before that number.
  • Practice number formation of the numbers 0 to 10 (or more if your child is confident with this already)
  • You may choose to play this game. Please choose from sequencing or ordering (forwards) from 1- 10 or 1-20
  • Play Three for me, one for you . The adult says three numbers in a sequence, either forwards or backwards, the child says the next number in the sequence. e.g. 6,7,8………9  or 14,13, 12…….11. You can choose the level of challenge by staying within 10, or going up to 20.

Other areas of the curriculum:

PE:

We are practising throwing, catching and passing a ball (big ones and small ones). It is quite tricky, so please keep practising at home.

On PE days the children should come dressed for outdoor PE, there is no need to bring a PE bag with a change of clothes. On these days, we would ask that the children wear trainers or similar for the playground and PE. It is really hard to hop when you are wearing wellies ! (Wellies are ideal on non-PE days though)

Outdoor learning:

What a fantastic time we had yesterday at the woods! It was lovely to see all children exploring, helping each other and having a wonderful time.

Independent Learning

Other information

A reminder that next week it is the October break. Children are back to school on Tuesday 27th October (Staff will be working on Monday 26th October).

The children are taking home today the bag with the spare clothes. This will give you an opportunity to check the items needed for next term.

Please remember to label all items with your child’s name. We still have items that haven’t been claimed since August. Remember to label hats and gloves too!

This term has been a great one! It has been lovely being back at school, we missed it very much. We had the pleasure of having your children on their first day ever at school (what a privilege!) and it is lovely to getting to know them a little bit better every day. They are all fantastic: they are a lovely, caring and welcoming class, a credit to you all!

We hope you have a wonderful break!

We have started to practice our throwing and catching skills using small and big balls.

Outdoor learning:

We used items from the playground to create our own patterns and looking for patterns in the playground.

Independent learning:

These are some photos of the learning through play that we had the opportunity to experience this week:

Other things….

  • Oxford Reading Tree books. We had a few queries about buying Oxford Reading Tree books to support reading at home. We would like to ensure parents that all children are working on reading at school every day. If children use the same books at home as the ones we use at school there will be certain skills that we will be unable to work on as children will know the story before we introduce it. Sometimes they will learn the book by heart but this will not mean that they can decode or that they understand what they are reading which could be misleading for parents and teachers. We would like to encourage you to work on single sounds, making words, blending sounds, etc. If your child is able to read please use different books to ORT to read at home.
  • NUT FREE reminder: As we have a number of pupils in school with nut allergies, please help us to ensure their safety by keeping nutty snacks at home. This includes nut-based chocolate spreads in sandwiches. Many thanks.
  • Purple book bags: Thank you to all parents who are only using this bag to bring things to school. It has helped the children to gain access to their items.
  • The children’s spare clothes are kept in the classroom in the cubby holes close to their shoes.
  • It would be really helpful if all your child’s items could be labelled (packed lunches and water bottles too)
  • Please be mindful when choosing a snack for your child: make sure your child can open it independently.
  • We still have no claimants for the lost property items which we posted three weeks ago, please have another look to see if you recognise anything.
  • We are looking forward to meeting you online next week at our Parent Evenings. This is an opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with us.

We are very proud of our Terrific Tigers!

Thank you for your continued support in your child’s learning.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend!

P1 Tigers blog. Friday 11th September 2020

Welcome to our weekly blog!

This week we are delighted to be back to our classroom. Please see below some photos of the different areas of the room. The children have settled well and they are making very good use of all areas.

Numeracy

We have been working on numeracy skills such as subitising ( Subitising is a term that was coined by the theorist Piaget and defined the ability to instantaneously recognise the number of objects in a small group without the need to count them). We have worked on recognising numbers and dot patterns (to 10). We are working in small groups to ensure your children are supported and challenge when needed.

We have explored numbers to 10 (and to 20 for some) with matching activities.

We have worked on sequencing numbers within the range of 10 ( to 20 for some)

We have worked on counting forwards and backwards from different starting points.

Home learning ideas:

At home you could support your child’s learning by:

  • Practice number formation numbers 0 to 10: you don’t need to use a pencil, you can use flour, water and a paint brush, make the number with chalk and your child can trace it over with a car, etc.
  • You could try one activity of your choice of this attached document.
  •  You could use this game:

https://duckiedeck.com/play/finger-counting

  • We have watched this video in class: Jack Hartmann

Literacy

  • Practising our listening and talking skills through sharing our last Memory boxes.
  • Exploring some single sounds of the alphabet. We have focused on a and t.
  • We have been making letters outdoors using different items.

Home learning ideas

  • To practice fine motor skills, use pegs, do and undo buttons, play with playdough, etc.
  • Find words that start with a given sound: a and t this week.
  • Read a story with your child every day (if possible) and chat about the book.

Other areas

PE

We are working on travelling movements. Most children found tricky skipping perhaps you could practice this skill at home.

Outdoor learning

We have reinforced the learning that took place in the classroom outdoors: making numbers, number recognition, letter recognition, etc.

Your weekly peak…

Other Information

  • We will start uploading the sound cards next week on the blog, please ensure you practice with these at home.
  • PE days are Tuesday and Thursday, your child should come dress appropriately for outdoor PE. Please not welly boots.
  • Please continue help your child to dress/undress independently, this will help with our class routines. If your child has laces make sure she/he knows how to tie them independently.
  • It would be really helpful if all items of clothing could be labelled, including shoes. We have some items of clothing that are not labelled and no one has claimed them. See photos:
  • Please remember: not to stand at the classroom door (parents/carers should wait on the playground, not on the courtyard), don’t open the door or knock if you are late. If you are late your child will need to access school through the school office.
  • Remember that Monday 21st September is a holiday.

Thank you for your continued support in your child’s learning.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Cross and Mrs de Bonrostro
