P2MN Blog 07.10.22

Dear Parents/ Carers,

This week in P2 we have been learning:

Literacy

In literacy we have learned two new vowel diagraphs oa (as in goat, moat, boat) and ow (as in blow, snow and row). They both make the same sound.  We talked about the fact that oa is usually found in the middle of words and ow at the end.

In writing we have continued to learn how to write instructions.

In handwriting we have been working on how to form the letter s in cursive script.

At home

  • Yesterday your child took home her/his reading book. We have been reading the book at school during the week therefore your child should be able to read the book without support (they might need support with some words). This is a showcase of their learning at school.
  • Your child should also have a word wall related to the stage they are reading. They should become confident in reading these words.
  • Handwriting, children could continue to practise writing their first and surname in cursive script.
  • Continue to practise reading and spelling the tricky words.
  • Here is a fun game to practise at home. Select ow and oa to reinforce this week’s phonics focus.

Forest Phonics – mobile friendly (ictgames.com)

    Maths

In Maths we have continued our unit of work on information handling. We have learned to make simple bar graphs.

We have continued to work on our numeracy skills through our SEAL programme.

The main focus has been on number structures (using a ten frame) and learning about all of the different ways that the same number can be represented.

    At home

This is a fun game to reinforce the work we have done on information handling.

We have used this game to explore ten frames.

    https://www.nctm.org/Classroom-Resources/Illuminations/Interactives/Ten-Frame/

Here is an interesting link which demonstrates how the numbers 9 and 10 can be represented.

Representing 9 and 10 – Maths – Learning with BBC Bitesize – BBC Bitesize

You could extend this at home by exploring different numbers and how they can be represented.

    Other areas

In PE we have worked on working as a team (outdoors) and ball skills (indoors): hand and feet skills.

IDL We have continued to work on our topic Polly Jean Pyjama Queen and our focus has been learning about habitats.

    Other information
  • Please ensure your child brings a jacket every day to school.
  • Thank you for your support in emptying the purple folders each day.
  • A reminder to name all items of clothing and shoes, and to check names on items brought home in case your child accidentally acquires a jumper belonging to someone else.
  • We would appreciate donations of any unwanted empty or partially used notebooks or diaries (used pages can be removed). Also, any enticing writing implements (i.e., glittery pencils/gel pens/ pencils with feathers etc – anything other than standard school issue type pencils/pens). The children enjoy choosing resources from the table to use in their independent learning.
  • We are looking for small pieces of ‘junk’ for modelling e.g., toothpaste boxes, tea bag boxes, snack bar boxes. The more interesting shapes the better!

    Have a wonderful weekend!

30.09.22 P2MN Blog

Sorry for the delay in posting the blog this week. Technology issues!

This week in P2 we have been learning:

Literacy

In literacy we have learned the new vowel diagraph ew as in -oo-. (examples of words with this sound are flew, stew, crew).  We have used these picture symbols to remember ew and oo.

This week in writing we have continued to learn how to write instructions. This time we wrote instructions on washing hands.

In handwriting we have been working on how to write on cursive the letters a, g and q.

At home

  • Yesterday your child took home her/his reading book. We have been reading the book at school during the week therefore your child should be able to read the book without support (they might need support with some words). This is a showcase of their learning at school.
  • The children also took home their words walls related to the stage book they are reading. They should become confident at reading these words.
  • Handwriting, children could continue to practice writing in their name and other names in cursive handwriting.
  • Continue to practice reading and writing the spelling words of the block that your child took home.
  • ew (as in oo) song
  •  Another very useful resource that we use in class is Alphablocks. The children love this!

Maths

In Maths we have been learning about handling information, we have learned to make bar charts.

We have continued to work on our numeracy skills through our SEAL programme (different groups will work with different numbers and skills depending on their abilities to be able to make progress accordingly).

Our focus has been on number structures using a ten frame.

At home

You could create your own bar chart gathering information about favourite fruits, favourite sports, etc. of the family members and friends.

We have used this game to explore number ten frame:

https://www.nctm.org/Classroom-Resources/Illuminations/Interactives/Ten-Frame/

This is another game that your child might find useful:

Dear Parents/Carers,

We have had a very busy week in P2. Please check your child’s purple folder for their Learning Story. This contains a termly overview of the learning for P2 and also your child’s personal targets. We would be grateful if these could be returned by Friday 23rd September.

Topic

Our highlight from this week was a visit from zoolab on Tuesday! Natalie introduced us to a variety of animals including stick insects, giant cockroaches, frogs, a tarantula, a baby rat, a giant snail and a gecko. She taught us all about their habitats and how the animals were specially adapted to living in their particular environment. This linked really well with our topic on Polly Jean Pyjama Queen.

Literacy

In literacy we have learned the igh and y sounds. These are two ways of making the same sound. We have used the eye symbol to help us remember this sound.

We have also been consolidating the ay and ai sounds from last week. Both classes enjoyed taking part in a word hunt in the playground with ai and ay words and pupils practised reading and spelling the words.

In writing we wrote a letter to King Charles III. We learned more about the conventions of letter writing.

Opportunities for home learning

  • Please revisit the following sounds:

sh,ch,th,wh,ee,oo,ai,ay,igh and y.

You could make up flashcards or play this interactive game below.

Phonics Pop || Listen to the sound, then pop as many bubbles as you can – mobile friendly (ictgames.com)

  • Continue to practise cursive handwriting using the sheet sent home last Friday.
  • Revisit blocks 1-3 tricky words.

Maths

In maths we continued to learn about the days of the week and months of the year.

In our number work we have continued with the SEAL programme. Some of the skills we have been working on this week are:

  • Counting forwards starting at different numbers (not always zero). Some of us have been counting in the 0-20 range, others in the 0-30 range and some up to 100 and beyond. We have also been counting backwards and we find this much trickier!
  • Identifying 2-digit numbers.
  • Saying the number before and after. Some of us have been doing this within in the 0-20 range, others in the 0-30 range and some up to 100.

Opportunities for learning at home

Paint the Squares – Interactive Number Charts (topmarks.co.uk)

Use the link above. This chart can be used in a number of different ways.

  • Select the number range your child is confident in.
  • Select the 1 more and 1 less puzzle to reinforce the work we have been doing on number before/after.
  • Select the missing number puzzle to reinforce numeral recognition. Discuss how you might work out the missing number and draw attention to the patterns in the rows and columns.

HWB/Other areas of the curriculum

  • We have been singing Fischy music songs which link to health and wellbeing.
  • We really enjoyed our outdoor loose parts session on Thursday afternoon.
  • We are continuing to focus on the theme of being respectful and kind.

Other information

  • We will begin to send reading books home on the week beginning 26th September. Further information on this will follow.
  • We have loose parts again on Wednesday 21st September. Please ensure that your child is wearing appropriate clothing as we will be outside in all weather!
  • Please ensure your child brings a jacket every day to school.
  • We would like to remind you that toys and Pokémon cards should not be brought to school.
  • A reminder to name all items of clothing and shoes, and to check names on items brought home in case your child accidentally acquires a jumper belonging to someone else.
  • We are looking for small pieces of ‘junk’ for modelling e.g., toothpaste boxes, tea bag boxes, snack bar boxes. The more interesting shapes the better!

Have a lovely weekend.

P6NM Our Learning WB 25.05.21

We have had a busy week in P6NM. Here is a summary of our learning:

Literacy

Reading

We held our Literature Circle meetings on Tuesday. The next meeting is on Monday 31st May.

Writing/Links to IDL

We read more of our class novel Wilderness Wars. In it, one of the main characters discovered bats roosting in a cave. We used this opportunity to read for information, using leaflets from The Bat Conservation Trust. We then worked in trios to construct a mind map sharing our new-found knowledge. Finally, we used these mind maps as plans for our writing. We wrote non-chronological reports on bats.

Opportunities for home learning

Here is a video explaining more. Once you have watched it you could try to write your own report around an area of your interest.

How to write a non-chronological report – BBC Teach

Maths

We have been learning about quadrilaterals.  This is a useful summary of the key points in our learning this week.

Classifying quadrilaterals – Year 5 – P6 – Maths – Home Learning with BBC Bitesize – BBC Bitesize

Opportunities for home learning

  • Can you see any quadrilaterals around your home? Draw and label the types of quadrilaterals you find.
  • Extra challenge- here is an interactive quiz to test your knowledge.

Math Game: Quadrilaterals (iknowit.com)

HWB

  • We have been dribbling using hockey sticks and balls in preparation for the P6 competition Games@thehub 2021.
  • We have been taking part in circle times around the themes of friendship and bullying. In particular, we talked about the role of witnesses.
  • We found out more about puberty using the new RSHP resource.

Listening and Talking and Writing

We looked at the #freecuthbert story that has been circulating recently. We discussed the impact of social media and wrote persuasive letters to either M&S or Aldi depending on our point of view.

Image preview

Opportunities for home learning:

Keep an eye on current events and the way that social media can be used to influence our feelings. For example, with the upcoming election. You might see political party broadcasts on the TV or on the internet. Identify how the different parties try to persuade you to agree with their point of view. Can you use the skills from our persuasive writing this week to persuade someone to agree with your view on who should be elected?

Maths

We began our maths lessons with core numeracy revision (multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000 as well as times tables).  We talked about the importance of revisiting these key skills frequently even though our main focus is on a different area of maths.

Image preview
Image preview
Image preview

The main area covered in maths this week was investigating how to construct triangles when you are given 3 pieces of information (SAS- Side, angle, side and ASA- Angle, side, angle).

Image preview

Opportunities for home learning:

Here are some videos we watched in class, which you may find useful to watch again. Please only watch video 81 and 82, WE DID NOT COVER SSS triangles (video 83).

Constructing Triangles Videos

If you have a protractor and ruler at home you could try some further examples.

Remember, it is also really important to keep revising times tables and other core numeracy skills. We will be doing more of this on Thursday.

Please read our mind maps to find out about our learning in other areas of the curriculum.

P6NM Week Beginning 27.10.20

**Please bring in a palm sized pebble on Monday.  We are going to be painting these next week.**

It was great to see everyone back after the October break. Here is a summary of our learning in P6NM this week.

Literacy

  • We read more of our novel Friend or Foe. We focussed on how the author uses dialogue to show us what different characters are like.  We also explored how Michael Morpurgo created a sense of danger and excitement.
  • We watched an video clip titled ‘How wolves change rivers’. We made notes on the interesting facts and used these to create leaflets.

Opportunities for home learning:

  • Do some independent research on a topic that interests you. Develop your note taking skills to show your understanding of the information. Remember only to write the key words which are important.
  • When reading, think about how the author creates excitement and drama. What techniques do they use? (Think about the types of words and sentences they use.)

Maths

In maths we revised the chimney method of multiplication.

Here is a link which demonstrates this (it is the first one which is called short multiplication).

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zjbyvk7

We then moved on to think about how to multiply a number by a multiple of ten (20/30/40/50/60/70/80/90).

For example 70 x 364, 40 x 213 or 50 x 975.

We did lots of examples to demonstrate that when you multiply by a multiple of ten you move all the digits one place to the left and put a zero in the empty space.

Opportunities for home learning:

  • Write out 7 x 264 using the formal layout that we have been working on this week. Explain to someone at home the steps you took to solve it.
  • Use the digits 5, 6, 7 and 8 to create a list of 1 digit x 3 digit sums, then solve them.  For example 5 x 678    6 x 758   8 x 675
  • Try some sums involving multiples of ten. For example, 30 x 212. Lay it out as shown in the picture above.
  • Revise your times tables and increase your speed and accuracy by completing the ‘Daily 10’ or Hit the Button on Top Marks.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/daily10

Other areas of the curriculum:

  • In assembly we focussed on keeping ourselves safe on Bonfire Night.
  • We enjoyed the Pumpkin trail and French with Mrs Bailey on Friday.
  • We enjoyed being outdoors and making spider webs with wool and sticks.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs McFarlane

Buckstone Primary School

P6NM Week Beginning 5th October

We had a busy week in P6NM. Here is a summary of our learning.

Literacy

  • We read more of our novel Friend or Foe. We made inferences about what characters were thinking and feeling. The tricky bit was finding evidence in the text to support what we were saying.
  • We researched and made notes which will help us to write biographies next week.
  • Here are our spelling words.
Image preview

Opportunities for home learning:

Think about these questions:

What do you notice about the way they are structured/organised?

What do you notice about the language features?

  • Write a mini autobiography. Think about your personal family history and important events in your life.

Maths

In maths we identified lines of symmetry and created symmetrical shapes. Here is some jotter work.

Opportunities for home learning:

  • Play this symmetry matching game and select ‘patterns’.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/symmetry/symmetry-matching

  • Log into Education City and use the Username P6NM and Password P6NM. Click on Homework and there is an activity to complete in the folder called ‘Symmetry’.

EducationCity

Other areas of the curriculum:

  • We made food chains with paper chains.
  • We enjoyed using drama to understand a key event in Friend or Foe.
  • We enjoyed being outdoors and making symmetrical obstacle courses.

Here are some grids and posters from our reflective Friday session this morning.
