An exciting day finding out our parts for the show!
Well done for excellent effort during our learning from home day. I look forward to seeing all the learning completed within the home learning jotters or via email by Monday.
New Home Learning will be sent out/saved online on Monday.
Thank you for all your support with learning together at home yesterday.
Today your child will bring home a copy of this terms newsletter along with some examples of the learning associated with last term’s targets. n.b. This pack is for you to keep at home, there is no need to return it to school, so please remove it from the purple folder – thank you.
This term’s targets have been posted on the ejournals today.
Next week in school is Health week when our whole school focus will be on learning how to keep our bodies healthy and active.
Children can come dressed in sportswear every day if they wish (no football strips please)
We are looking forward to seeing you at 9.30 (link has been emailed to all P1 T parents)
We have prepared some learning for you.
Literacy
Today is Thursday and on Thursday we do writing. At 9.30 we will explain how to do it. But here is some guidance too
Today we would like you to write about ‘ Foods I like to eat’
(Template provided yesterday on purple folder)
Learning Intention (What we are learning today):
We are learning to write in sentences.
Success Criteria (How can I show that I have learned and understood):
I can put capital letters in the right place.
I can use finger spaces.
I can use full stops.
I can sound out the words to try to write them.
I can write a sentence that makes sense.
Today you are going to write about ‘Foods I like to eat’
First talk to an adult about foods you like to eat: You could tell the adult who is with you which foods do you like, you can start by making a list. Think about what do you want Mrs Cross and Mrs de Bonrostro to know ( we are your audience!). You can name a few and then choose one that you would like us to know more about.
Draw a detailed picture (you don’t have to colour it in, black pen drawing if you have one), think about what it looks like, when and where do you eat it. We would love to see a picture of food that you like to eat. (you could take a photo of your work and upload it on the e-learning journal once you have finished).
Now you can try to write a few sentences:
The adult who is helping you can write the sentences starters (written below in cursive) so you can copy them. However, if you want a bit of a challenge try to sound out the words and write them without help (Adult, please don’t focus on correcting the spelling to start with if it is phonetically correct).
Sentence starters: Then start by: The foods I like to eat are… Tell me everything you can about it: My favourite food is… Then tell me what you like about it: I like …because….
Your child should be able to write independently the worked tricky words (such as I, she, he, etc)
You could give your child a bank of words to use (please try not to add CVC words or our tricky words)
Non-negotiables (adult you could write a simple sentence and model it for your child):
Capital letter at the beginning of a sentence.
Full stop at the end of a sentence.
Finger spaces between words.
We would love to see your amazing writing.
Please write the title and date for your child and then chose from one of the following:
Easiest: Adult to scribe for you and you copy the sentence underneath. You can also provide the beginning of the sentence and ask your child to write a CVC word ( consonant, vowel, consonant). Example: Child is provided with the sentence I like soup because is…(child can write hot independently)
Medium: Attempt to write independently with adult supporting with trickier words.
Trickiest: Write independently. Try to write at least 4 sentences.
If you would like an extra activity, your child took home a sheet with his/her name written on it and a target. Your child could work on the given target.
Numeracy
We are working on measurement. In class yesterday we started to learn about capacity. We are experimenting with everyday items as units of measure to investigate and compare sizes and amounts in our environment, sharing our findings with others. We are estimating, measuring the capacity of familiar objects using a range of appropriate non-standard units.
Please find the worksheet attached (it went home yesterday too)
Task: To help to prepare a healthy snack or meal. You could help to prepare a sandwich (spread butter) and/or chop vegetables and/ or fruit.
We would like you to wash your hands before preparing food, using utensils safely ( knife to chop or to spread) and washing the dishes after eating your food.
Please, if you can, ask an adult to take a photo of you preparing the food and to upload it on the e- journal. We would love to see all our chefs!
On Friday we will be playing with Loose parts outside, remember to wear appropriate clothes for outdoor messy play!
Here is your learning for today. A pack was sent home with everything you need for today’s learning.
Literacy: Writing
Task:
Using the writing sheet within the pack, write a story about your favourite food or favourite dish. Can you tell me why this is your favourite? Have you ever helped to make it yourself? For an extra challenge, describe how the food tastes. Can you extend your sentences by adding in more descriptive language? Take your time drawing a picture of your favourite food or of you eating it. Your choice!
Remember our non-negotiables and check your work when you think you are finished. Have you included capital letters, full stops and finger spaces?
Numeracy/Maths: Measurement
Task:
We are going to be continuing our learning of measurement, carrying on from the lesson we had yesterday in school. Now it is your turn to play with water and make different measurements using various containers you have in your house. Before filling each container with water can you guess which one might hold more? Which container will hold less?
Please fill out the worksheet which is in this pack.
Health and Wellbeing: Food Technology
Task:
Next week we are going to be starting our new topic of ‘My Body’ and how to keep it fit and healthy. We would like you to help an adult prepare a healthy snack or lunch for your family. You could help by cutting fruit, spreading butter, making a sandwich. Whatever you and your family would like to do. You could do some baking if you have time. You may also wish to make the food/dish you wrote about for writing.
Remember to wash your hands before preparing the food and to help with the washing up!
You could take photos and share these on the learning journals.
Other
Here are further suggestions of activities you could do at home today if you would like.
Read a story with an adult or individually.
Go on a walk and see if you can spot signs of spring.
Revise our time topic and make a timetable for yourself for the day.
Go on Youtube and find any of the Jack Hartman videos we watch together in class.
Revise your tricky words by reading and writing them.
Revise our phonics sounds we have been working on recently – you could choose a sound and write as many words which have that sound in it as you know. Can you use any in a sentence?
I hope you have a lovely day, please get in touch if you have any questions.
Our spelling rule this week looks at the suffixes ly, less and ful. We worked out that usually you can just add the suffix onto the end of the root word unless it ends in a y then it needs to be changed to an i (beauty becomes beautiful)
Please remember if you wish to enter Buckstone’s Got Talent from P4W we would love to see your entries posted in our Teams files to share with your class-mates tomorrow
This is also a reminder that the children will return to school on Wednesday 5th May and then we will be Learning Together at Home on Thursday 6th May due to Buckstone Primary being used as a polling station. There will be some learning coming home on Wednesday with the children to help with this and please check Teams files on Wednesday evening for the information for the day. Thank you for your support. Our class will have a live Teams meeting at 10am until 10.30am on Thursday 6th May. Please do let us know if you are having any problems accessing Teams with your username and password from Learning Together at Home. On Friday 7th we will return to school again.
Well done for a successful and busy week of learning in P4WL! Thank you for taking the time to engage in the parent consultation sessions this week with Mrs Williamson and I, it has been a great opportunity to share lots of successes and hear about how everyone is. 😊
Please note that the children have an important letter in their bags today that we talked about in class. Please take an opportunity to read through and return the slip at the bottom by next Friday – 7th May. Thank you for your help and co-operation, it is much appreciated.
Also, we will be looking to enjoy watching our Buckstone Has Talent entries for P4WL next Wednesday in class. We will be deciding on the class act to go forward for the final on Wednesday. Please upload any videos/recordings onto the Assignments onto our Class Teams files by then. Thank you!
This week we have been learning to:
Literacy:
Read and analyse a poem and use descriptive phrases.
Find the meaning of more challenging words and phrases.
Identify adjectives, alliteration and other literacy techniques within texts.
Spell words with open syllables and use these within dictations.
Share our opinion and ideas around a range of texts.
Read, using a clear voice and expression, to an audience.
Share key parts of a new class novel, The Legend of Spud Murphy, with information about the setting, characters and events so far.
Answer a range of questions, using key evidence from the text.
Develop our understanding of a time-line and order events chronologically.
Spelling next week will be a focus on the Common Words. Please find these in our Teams files if you wish to continue working on these.
Ideas for Learning at Home:
Find a poem that you are interested in – can you find another by William Wordsworth? Is there a Spring poem you can find and share with your classmates? What do you like about it and why?
Practise the spelling rule this week and the common words.
Take some time to enjoy reading for pleasure, finding a new text like an audio book, magazine, non-fiction book or a novel.
Numeracy
This week we have been learning to:
Develop our speed and accuracy of number facts.
Build on our knowledge of the times tables, specifically the 9 times table.
Continue to focus on number patterns and use mental strategies like halving and doubling.
Share what we already know about Fractions and identify halves and quarters of shapes and numbers.
Identify the position of an object or symbol on a grid.
Create a grid of our own and use objects and directional/positional language to share information.
Explain what a grid reference is.
Develop our knowledge of what co-ordinate grids are and how to find a co-ordinate point.
Use real-life maps and contexts to share a grid reference or co-ordinate point.
Ideas for Learning at Home:
Find a times table you find more challenging – use a game online, one you have created or an idea to help you (it may be good fun to do something outdoors!)
Find a half or quarter of a shape or an amount.
Create a grid outdoors in your garden or a local park/area where you can practise your Angles, Position and Movement. Consider creating grid references/co-ordinate points and how you can challenge yourself to describe a route from one place to another (use the language we have been learning).
Find an atlas or use a map/Google Maps to try and create a grid reference challenge – explain to someone at home how to find an object or symbol.
Across the Curriculum
This week we have been learning to:
Explore boats from the past and recent times and know how to place them chronologically on a time-line.
Draw a design for our own boat, using our STEM skills to think like an engineer.
Explore opportunities for creative thinking, problem solving and team-building using the loose parts play equipment.
Use line, shape and colour to create a piece of Spring Art.
Use pattern, line, shape and colour to recreate a Pop Art style.
Take part in fitness challenges and develop our throwing, jumping and ball skills
Great effort everyone! 😊
Have a lovely long weekend and we will look forward to seeing you back in school on Wednesday 5th May! 😊
It has been another busy week in P4H, full of learning.
Apologies for the delay in last week’s Blog. For some reason it didn’t actually post despite the class completing it on Friday!
Hopefully you have caught up now!
Thank you to everyone who entered BGT. The standard of talent was very high and all the acts were fantastic. We were impressed the imaginative ideas and finding venues! It was a very hard decision for all of us to vote for the 2 winners to represent us in the Final which will be judged by the Senior Leaders next week!
Today’s blog is compiled by P4H
Literacy
Next week we will revise tricky words as well as the common words. The lists can be found on our Teams.
Reading We started our group readers and discussed what we thought they were about from the information in the blurb and the front cover. We have predicted what they will be like to read.
Home Learning Ideas. Retell what you have read so far to someone at home..
We began our new Novel Study together called Otteline and the Yellow Cat by Chris Riddell
It sounds like it might be a mystery story and with detective work. The first chapter was interesting and we got an idea about the main characters who are Otteline and Mr Monroe and Robert. It is a clever mixture of writing and drawings. The illustrator is also the author and he only uses one colour, which is red.
We have been looking at homophones and connectives to help our story writing. Connectives are sometimes called conjunctions They join sentences together and help make our writing flow. Some are ….for, so , because , and , or, when
Homophones are words which sound the same but are spelt differently and have a different meaning
eg hear, here, night , knight , bare , bear, there, their, they’re, two, too, to, buy, bye, by
Home Learning Ideas Think of other homophones and explain their different meaning.
We made up descriptions of Spring using similes.
We did a comprehension about the Titanic . We had to be reading detectives and look for the clues in the facts and figures of the text.
Numeracy
We continued with the 3 times table and progressed onto 6 and 9 times table .We are all at different stages but we are practicing recall. We used time table grids and lists to help us.
At home, keep practising all the tables out of sequence. If you know them, then try to speed up your recall. here’s a good site to use.
We were able to multiply using our tables , using the traditional method with carrying .
We continued working on grids and coordinates . We learned that to read coordinates it is important to read the x axis first ( which is the bottom or horizontal line) and then the y axis (which is the vertical line) We write them like this ( B,3) Here are some examples of our work plotting colours on a grid, by following the coordinates.
Home learning Ideas. Draw a grid and labels the axis . Remember to use letters on one and numbers on the other. Can you plot colours like we did in the class.
Titanic
We decided to chose the Titanic as our IDL subject
We discussed what we already knew about it . Then we made a list of questions asking what we want to know and find out in our research.
We started to explore facts and figures about the Titanic and have begun to get an idea of how the ship sank. We are all very exited to find out more.
PE
We divided into groups and practised skills using different equipment at each station We rotated our groups
Outdoor Learning
We explored the signs of Spring in the playground looking for birds, leaves, buds, footprints, signs of growth We had to look hard, up and down.
Today we had a session with Loose Parts developing many skills like pushing, constructing, teamwork, imagination, looking and listening, sharing ideas, compromising, pulling, balance, strength and coordination.
Thursday – Learning Together at Home (please make sure you can still access Teams). Some hard copies of work will be sent home on Wednesday so please check school bags!
Friday- Normal school day
Here is a summary of our learning this week. The pupils created mind maps to show the skills we have been working on, the challenges they encountered and what they feel the next steps are in their learning.
Literacy
Spelling
Listening and Talking and Writing
We looked at the #freecuthbert story that has been circulating recently. We discussed the impact of social media and wrote persuasive letters to either M&S or Aldi depending on our point of view.
Opportunities for home learning:
Keep an eye on current events and the way that social media can be used to influence our feelings. For example, with the upcoming election. You might see political party broadcasts on the TV or on the internet. Identify how the different parties try to persuade you to agree with their point of view. Can you use the skills from our persuasive writing this week to persuade someone to agree with your view on who should be elected?
Maths
We began our maths lessons with core numeracy revision (multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000 as well as times tables). We talked about the importance of revisiting these key skills frequently even though our main focus is on a different area of maths.
The main area covered in maths this week was investigating how to construct triangles when you are given 3 pieces of information (SAS- Side, angle, side and ASA- Angle, side, angle).
Opportunities for home learning:
Here are some videos we watched in class, which you may find useful to watch again. Please only watch video 81 and 82, WE DID NOT COVER SSS triangles (video 83).
