P2M Blog 10.03.23

Dear Parents/Carers,

We hope that you had a lovely week.

We have had a few children bringing in toys and jewellery from home. We do not want any toys to get lost or damaged so please do not allow your child to bring these in. Whilst friendship bracelets / necklaces are given out with kind intentions, this can lead to upset when others are left out. We would really appreciate if these items could be left at home as they are more suitable for playdates rather than school. Thank you for your cooperation with this.

Here is a summary of our learning.

Literacy

We have continued to work on compound words (e.g. cupcake, football, starfish).  As part of this, we have been clapping and counting syllables in words.

The tricky words this week are those, buy and first.

In writing we retold the story of A Squash and a Squeeze. We had to order the events and retell it from the point of view of the little old lady.

Ideas for home:

Write some simple sentences and ask your child if they can identify the compound word within it. For example:

  • I like my bedroom.
  • I want a skateboard.

Ask your child to count the number of syllables in familiar words. Can they work out how many syllables are in the name of each family member? What about their favourite foods? You can clap or alternatively, hold your hand under your chin to count the number of syllables if finding it tricky.

Reading books were sent home yesterday. Please also work on the coloured key word walls which will help with fluency when reading aloud. Please note that due to the show next week, we will give reading books home on Friday rather than Thursday.

Maths

We have been learning to name 3D shapes: cube, cuboid, sphere, cylinder and cone. We talked about edges, faces and corners/vertices.

In our number work we have been practising our subtraction skills. We have also been working on saying the number before and the number after. Some of us are doing this within the range 0-30, some 30-100 and some beyond.

Ideas for home:

Play a game of true or false. Write down 10 sums. Some of them should be correct and some of them should be incorrect. Can your child use their subtraction skills to work out which ones are which? The children love spotting when the teacher makes a mistake on the board so this can be a fun game to play at home.

If you have chalk at home, you could write a 2 digit number on your garden path. Can your child write the number before and the number after? You can make it more tricky by crossing a decade. For example, with 80 in the middle, can they say the number before?

Other areas of the curriculum

  • We have been very busy with rehearsals for our P2 show. We can’t wait to perform it for you next week!
  • We enjoyed a session of loose parts on Tuesday afternoon in the sunshine.
  • We have continued to work on the ‘Have a Goal’ unit as part of Health and Wellbeing.
  • We are continuing to enjoy gymnastics in our PE lessons.

Have a great weekend.

This week’s homework

  • Learn to read and spell the words said , go
  • Practice coin recognition of all coins to £2 and counting amounts of money (choose your level of challenge – up to 10p/20p/50p/£1 and beyond)
  • Play this game, or this game on a tablet or phone to consolidate your knowledge of counting coins. Choose your level within the game.
  • Be Geraldine….. go around looking for things which have the th sound in them. You may choose to write a list of what you find and bring it to school.
  • Practice pronouncing the th sound with your tongue out ( eg – say path, not paf )

We are grateful for your continued donations of small, clean items of recycling for our STEM area.

Please also see a request in last week’s homelink for help sourcing some materials for our outdoor loose parts provision.

Many thanks

Independent learning

The children have been developing a wide range of skills through independent learning opportunities in class and outdoors..

Literacy.

This week we have introduced the vowel digraph th and learned the tricky words said and go

Our writing prompt this week was “I go to……I put on….”

We continue to use core reading book resources in school as we begin to develop developing the children’s reading comprehension skills, exploring the cognitive strategies of activating, inferring, monitoring/clarifying, questioning, searching/selecting, summarizing, and visualising.

Numeracy and Maths

I am developing my awareness of how money is used and can recognise and use a range of coins.
MNU 0-09a

Key vocabulary – coin, value, amount, change, pence, pounds ( please try to avoid using the word pennies for coins, as this causes confusion – only a 1p coin is actually worth a penny)

We have been counting amounts of coins and also choosing the correct coins to ‘pay’ for something. We also began to investigate the idea of giving change from a higher value coin. I have a10p coin and the toy costs 7p. I will need to be given 3p change.

Children don’t have the same exposure to loose change as they used to as we seem to be heading towards a cashless society, but if at all possible, create a coin collection for your child to explore and handle.

.

Looking ahead to next week

Please return reading books on Monday.

Monday’s PE session will be gymnastics, and Thursday’s is games/fitness so please remember to dress appropriately.

Loose parts learning on Friday.

Other areas of the curriculum

In PE we used our jumping and landing skills to jump from a box to a crash mat. We also balanced on a thin beam and balanced on a mat. On Thursday we worked our endurance fitness

We had assembly with Mrs Conlin. She was talking to us about good manners, respecting the toilets, and being kind to our friends

A reminder to please name all items of clothing and shoes, and to check names on items brought home in case your child accidentally acquires a jumper belonging to someone else.

P1M Reflective Friday 10.3.23

Hello everyone,

This week we have been learning:

MATHS AND NUMERACY

We are continuing to learn about money. We have been recognising British coins up to £2 and adding coins to give a total up to 10p. Some of us have managed to add bigger amounts of money.

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

Have a look at the coins you have around the house and help your child to identify them. Practise making different amounts using a variety of coins.

LITERACY

This week we introduced the sound th. We thought of words starting and ending with this sound and practised reading and writing these words. Our tricky words this week were said and go.

This week’s dictation practised th words.

We use Pink for Think and Green for Great to reflect on our learning.

As we had some frosty weather this week, we were writing about what we saw on our journey to school.

We were learning to recognise and write the capital letters: J K L M N O

We are learning about the author Julia Donaldson and reading some of her books in class.

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

Please cut out the flashcard your child has brought home today and use it to help your child to recognise the sounds and build words. The th sound is difficult for some children to pronounce correctly. Please practise this sound with your child, making sure that the tongue is between the teeth when they say it.

Please continue to practise the words on the reading vocabulary card,  a few words at a time and share the reading book your child has brought home.

PE

We have been using our bodies to make different shapes and rolls. We have been balancing, jumping, and landing  using benches and mats.

FRENCH

We have been learning to say good morning, how are you? in French and we have started to learn the words for numbers to 10. We also revised the colour words we know.

Primary 1M Reflective Friday 3.3.23

Hello everyone,

This week we have been learning:

MATHS AND NUMERACY

We started talking about money and watched a video which introduced British currency. In small groups we examined coins more closely and talked about the shape, colour, size, and value of the different coins. We discussed the fact that there are no coins with the value of 3p and 4p for example,  and that we have to make amounts in different ways.

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

Have a look at the coins you have around the house and help your child to identify them.  In school we have been discussing the fact that the biggest coin is not always worth the most. We will be continuing to learn about money next week and some of us will be using coins to make different amounts of money.

LITERACY

This week we introduced the sound ch. We thought of words starting and ending with this sound and practised reading and writing these words. We made paper chains in the class.

This week’s dictation practised these words as well as the tricky words: the, put, I.

We use Pink for Think and Green for Great to reflect on our learning.

We were learning to recognise and write the capital letters: D E F G H I

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

Please cut out the flashcard your child has brought home today and use it to help your child to recognise the sounds and build words.

Please continue to practise the words on the reading vocabulary card,  a few words at a time.

WORLD BOOK DAY

Thank you to everyone who brought in some of their favourite books to share with the class. We only had time to read one of them as the first one we chose was a particularly long one- but very enjoyable. If you would like to bring the books in again, we will read them over the coming weeks. It was lovely to see a mixture of fiction and nonfiction books among the selection.

Primary 6 buddies came to read to us, and the children shared the books they had brought in with them.

PE

We have been using our bodies to make different shapes and have been balancing using different parts of our bodies.

FRENCH

We have been learning to say good morning, how are you? in French and we have started to learn the words for numbers to 10. We also revised the colour words we know.

Good afternoon, Bright Sparks!

Literacy

This week, we learned the ‘ch’ sound. We made chains and practised blending ch words. We make sure we say ‘ch’ rather than ‘chih’! We enjoyed another new reading book this week that we took home on Thursday. Please remember to return this book on Monday! We also individually came to the teaching table to practise reading and writing our tricky words. The ones that were the hardest were ‘want’, ‘saw’, ‘was’ and ‘his’. Please practise reading these at home with the blue sheet flashcards if you ever have a few spare minutes – repetition is key! For World Book Day, some of us brought in our favourite book and we showed this to the class. Our P6 buddies then came to our classroom in the afternoon to read with us!

mark-making table – writing postcards

Maths and numeracy

This week, we continued with our money topic. We worked on adding coins, usually up to the value of 10p. We had to work out how much money was in the money jar. We remembered that if there is a 2p, we have to count that twice as it’s the same as 2 1ps. We will continue with this next week, going beyond 10p if we are able to.

Other Areas

This week, we continued with our gymnastics block in PE. We used the benches to practise balancing, and then turned them upside down so that it was trickier but we all did a fantastic job! We also made sure to bend our knees when jumping off onto the mats for our dismount. On Thursday, we did some yoga to relax and stretch our bodies. Our shoe shop remained popular this week as a roleplay opportunity, so next week we are going to transform it into a hairdressing salon which the children have asked for. Any donations of empty shampoo bottles for a little product shop (or old hairdressing gowns if we have any hairdressers!) would be most welcome.

To do at home

Numeracy: recognising the numbers 1-30, counting backwards from 20 or 30, writing the ‘teen’ numbers with the 1 first and remember it’s ‘teen’ not ‘ty’, counting on with our fingers, number bonds to 10

Maths: naming 3D objects, recognising symmetrical shapes/structures, using tally marks to count items/collect data, recognising coins, which coin is worth more?, adding 1-5p coins together

Literacy: being able to write our tricky words, confidence in blending when reading books, being able to write (as well as recognise) all of our sounds we have covered (A-Z with q as qu, ck, ee, oo, sh and ch.)

General: being able to take off jumpers and zip up coats.

General Information

Any donations of empty shampoo bottles for a little product shop (or hairdressing gowns if we have any hairdressers!) would be most welcome.

Keep all the junk coming in – it’s amazing how quickly we run out!

We have Loose Parts on Wednesday afternoon. It’s to be cold next week so please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for being outside!

Have a great weekend,

Dear Parents/ carers

We hope you are well.

Although this week has been a short week at school we have been very busy learning and we have started to prepare our P2 show.

Please, if you haven’t done so already, check your child’s purple folder today. If they have asked for a speaking part in our forthcoming show, then they have been given their lines to take home on Monday. Please could you help them to practise their lines at home. We will have rehearsals in school, but we want them to feel as confident as possible.

Literacy

We have continued to work on compound words. Our main focus has been on tricky words. We have been working on reading and writing different blocks. Please continue to work on these at home.

Our tricky words from block 6 this week are: won’t, don’t and both.

At writing we have created a new flow chart about lunch. We are learning how to write a basic flowchart.

Ideas to do at home

Please practice your tricky words (read and write)

Ask your child to read the book that we have read at school this week. Ask your child questions about the book.

Compound words hunt: Do a hunt around the house or/and outdoors and create a list with them. You can use two colours to point out which two words make the compound words. Count the syllables. Children loved this video:

Maths

We have continued to work on our number skills counting forwards and backwards, number before and number after a given number. We have continued to work on subtraction (from 10, 20 and beyond for some).

Ideas to do at home.

Here is a video to help with subtraction

Remember you also have a sum dog account. We have set a 2D shape challenge and an addition and subtraction challenge for you to try.

It is very important that when practicing addition and subtraction at home your children use different ideas. A good mathematician always uses scrap paper to work out their findings!

Please find attached different ideas to work on numeracy skills  (counting, adding, ordering, arrays, etc.)

  • Numbers to 20
  • Numbers to 30
  • Beyond 30

Other areas

PE focus on games.

As mentioned above we have started to prepare our assembly about Katie Morag and Scotland.

World Book Day. We had the opportunity of reading our own favourite books at school.  Your child can bring their own book to school anytime for BEAR time.

Other

  • Loose parts on Wednesday 8th March.
  • Please see separate email about the show dates and costumes.

Independent learning

The children have been developing a wide range of skills through independent learning opportunities in class and outdoors..

Literacy.

This week we have introduced the vowel digraph ch as well as revising and assessing the writing/spelling of all our block one ‘tricky’ words .

We enjoyed sharing our favourite books with our friends and buddies on World Book Day.

MNU 0-09a

We have started a block of learning about money. We have been handling real coins and looking closely at the designs on them. We noticed that not all coins have a number on them and that we need to learn to identify the value of the coin by size, shape and colour alone.

You may choose to play this game at home to reinforce our learning in school.

Children don’t have the same exposure to loose change as they used to as we seem to be heading towards a cashless society, but if at all possible, create a coin collection for your child to explore and handle.

Please ensure all reading books are returned on Monday morning so that they can be allocated to a different group/class.

Our Writing prompt was ‘.. at the shop…’

Numeracy and Maths

We have been working on individual numeracy targets this week, including ordering numbers to 20 or 100

.

Core numeracy skills this week included

  • writing the numerals 1 – 10 ( and beyond) correctly
  • counting backwards from 10 (or 20 for some pupils).
  • naming the next number in an isolated short backwards number sequence. ie. I say, 10, 9, 8 (they say 7)
  • establishing a collection (give me 9 counters/raisins/etc)
  • counting a collection beyond 10 with accurate 1-1 correspondence
  • recognising numerals
  • sequencing a short selection of numerals ( e.g. 5,6,7,8)
  • making instant finger patterns (show me 6 fingers without counting them)
  • recognising dice patterns and clapping the amount of dots on the dice

Our challenge numeracy skills were.

  • adding two collections with the second one screened ( e.g. here are 8 counters, there are 5 more hiding under this pot, how many altogether?)
  • sequencing numerals within the range 0-100
  • naming the number after a given number (0-30)
  • counting backwards from 30, starting and stopping at different points
  • investigating which equal groups can be made from a given number ( e.g. can I make 2 equal groups/3 equal groups/4 equal groups/5 equal groups from 12 counters? What about if I have 16 counters, or 18 etc)

Looking ahead to next week

World book day is on Thursday. If your child would like to bring a favourite book to show the class they are welcome to do so. We are not inviting the children to dress up this year.

Other areas of the curriculum

In PE we explored different ways to balance on a gym mat. We balanced on our own and also with a partner. We had sonme great creative ideas.

A reminder to please name all items of clothing and shoes, and to check names on items brought home in case your child accidentally acquires a jumper belonging to someone else.
