P1B Reflective Friday 25.11.22
Good afternoon!
Literacy
This week, we learned the l and c sounds. We found things around the classroom starting with our new sounds and found some leaves (pictures below) to make lions. We practised blending CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words. It helps if we take one big breath and say all the sounds slowly one after another without any breaks!
For writing, our prompt was “I ran to…”. Everyone did very well with writing those two tricky words, and we all tried to build and write ‘ran.’

Numeracy
This week, we were back to our SEAL ptogramme to practise saying the number before/after, as well as using different strategies to work out addition sums up to 10 and beyond.

Health and Wellbeing
In PE this week, we practised our literacy with listening to the middle sound of words to know how to move around the room. We also made up our own versions of tig that we played! On Friday, we went to the hall with P2, and they taught us some of the skills they have been learning in their PE lessons. There were lots of different stations for us to practise lots of different skills!

Other Areas
We have been practising our Nativity lines and have been thinking about adding in expression and drama to our performance. Please support your child to learn their line by next week if they don’t already know it. We got together in the hall with all the other P1s today to work out our staging! Today, your child has a letter in their purple folder about their costume. Around the classroom, we have had some impressive creations with the small bricks and the magnets.

General Information
We have loose parts (messy play) next Friday (2nd December).
Please support your child to learn their line for the Nativity in a big loud voice!
Have a great weekend,
Miss Croal

Here is a summary of our learning.
Literacy
In phonics we have continued to learn about magic e. The magic ‘e’ rule, sometimes known as silent ‘e’, is where the ‘e’ at the end of a word is silent but changes the way that the word is spoken. This happens when ‘e’ is the second letter in a split digraph with another vowel sound, such as in the word ‘kite. The ‘i’ says its name rather than its sound (/ˈiː/).
This week we have focussed on the ‘long i’ sound with ‘magic e’ (e.g. kite, hike, time, slide, shine). We know that in these words the letter ‘i’ says its name rather than its sound.
Another Alphablocks video clip which demonstrates this.
In Spelling we are working on Block 4. Please continue to revise how to read and write the previous blocks. The children have been working on this in class so they should know in which block are they working at school.
In handwriting we have worked on the formation of letters g and d in cursive.
At home:
- Try to find examples of magic e words in print around the house or on signs when you are out and about.
- Write out the words kit, Tim, pin. Ask your child to read the base word. Then draw a magic e on to the end of the word and ask your child to read the word again. Can they explain what has changed and why?
- Continue to practise Tricky Words Blocks 1-4 and ORT key words. An idea for working on tricky words could be to ask your child to do a dictation to you of the tricky words, she/he will read the words and you will write them and then swap roles (you could use flour or sand so your child can use the finger for writing rather than a pen or a pencil).
- Handwriting. Here is a useful website which has animations to show how to correctly form each letter. Please note that the f and z that we use are in the ‘alternative / non scheme letters’ section.
https://teachhandwriting.co.uk/continuous-cursive-beginners-choice-1.html
Maths
In Maths we have continued to learn about Probability. This week we had an interesting chat about the World Cup using the vocabulary: impossible, unlikely, likely and certain. We have some interesting predictions!
At home you could discuss these scenarios and ask your child which word they would choose to describe how likely it is that it will happen.
- I will go to the zoo tomorrow.
- I will go to the zoo during the holidays.
- I will go for a swim at the sea today.
- I will go for a swim at the sea on my holidays.
- etc.
In our number work we have been working on our addition skills. Thinking about which strategy we find useful when you are adding. There are 3 strategies below:
- Use concrete materials (such as beads or pasta) to make the sum and count the objects.
- Start on the big number (put it in your head) then count on.
- Use a number line or 100 square to start on the correct number then count on the correct number of times.
- Think about ten frames and try to visualise the numbers.
We use this website at school that will give you some choice depending on your child’s ability.

Other areas
PE
We have been working on jumping skills and team games.
RSHP
We have discussed the topic ‘People who are special to me’ and ‘When I have a question or a worry’. We talked about different people who look after us and who to speak to if we have a question or a worry. We loved the book ‘The huge bag of worries’
EXA
We have made a class Christmas tree to decorate the gym hall. We are so proud of our fantastic artwork!
Important Information
P2 have a session of loose parts on Wednesday 30th November (weather permitting). Please come with suitable clothes and footwear. It is not too late to send in a bag with a change of clothes to keep at school. Last time we had lots of soggy socks which were changed! Please remember to replace these if your child brought their spare ones home.
P2 are looking forward to visits from some helping professionals next week. We will be hearing from an anaesthetist and two scientists who are involved in developing medicines and treatment to make people feel better. In preparation for this, we are asking the children to think about some questions that they could ask. For example, you might ask ‘What is your favourite part of your job?’. Please bring questions in at the start of the week.
We are also hoping to make our own Christmas tree for the classroom. This is the kind of thing we are aiming to make! If you have any boxes at home which we could use, please send them in on Monday.
Thank you in advance!
Have a lovely weekend,
Mrs McFarlane

P1M Reflective Friday 25.11.22
Hello everyone, this is what we have been learning this week:
MATHS
This week we have been learning to identify, copy and continue a pattern. Activities have been set up in the class to help us practise this and in our teaching groups we have been using shapes and colour to continue a pattern. We used the Smartboard to do a pattern warm up and played a shape pattern game on the Smartboard too.

LITERACY
This week we introduced the sounds l and c. We thought of words beginning with those sounds and learned songs and actions to help us remember them. In small groups we used magnetic letters to try to blend sounds together to read and build words.
Our two new tricky words are was and want.
Please use the blue letter cards you have collected so far to practise blending and building words. Please help your child to read and write the tricky words.
WRITING
One of the children suggested that the toys in our classroom might come to life when we go home. We talked about what they might get up to and thought of stories about their adventures. We tried to write some words ourselves as well as drawing detailed pictures.
SCOTTISH BOOK WEEK
Here are some photographs from last week showing us enjoying the books in our class library.

PE
We are learning to throw and catch a ball. We practised three activities, working together in groups: throwing bean bags into hoops, throwing a sponge ball into the air, letting it bounce and catching it, throwing beanbags underarm to a partner.
LOOSE PARTS LEARNING

ART

The class worked together to decorate a giant Christmas tree for the hall.
Here are some examples of learning through play from the last two weeks.

Primary One will have their next Loose Parts session on Friday 2nd December.
Have a lovely weekend everyone.
P1 Masterminds 18.11.22 Reflective Friday
Hello everyone, this is what we have been learning this week:
NUMERACY
In our groups we have been learning to identify numbers as dot patterns, count a number of movements or sounds, saying the number word before and after a number, counting items in two rows.
We practised forming the number 5.
LITERACY
This week we introduced the sounds u and b. We thought of words beginning with those sounds and learned songs and actions to help us remember them. In small groups we used magnetic letters to try to blend sounds together to read and build words.
Our two new tricky words are his and put.
SCOTTISH BOOK WEEK
We have enjoyed – ‘stop, drop and read’ this week. We listened to the stories from the Bookbug bag, and we hope that you enjoy sharing the books at home.
Please use the blue letter cards you have collected so far to practise blending and building words. Please help your child to read and write the tricky words.
EXPRESSIVE ARTS – Nativity
Today your child will bring home a line or two lines stapled to their sound sheet. We would like them to say these words in our Nativity. Can you please practise these words with your child so that they are able to say them loudly and clearly. If your child is experiencing difficulty with this or has decided they no longer wish to say anything, please let one of us know.
We will be in touch soon with requests for help with providing costumes.
PE
We are learning to throw and catch a ball. We revised the previous skills we had learned and then practised a two step activity where we ran to a cone, threw, and caught the ball 5 times, ran to another cone and then threw an item into a hoop.
ROAD SAFETY
We learned about staying safe when we are out and about at the Magic Roadshow.
OUTDOOR LEARNING/ LOOSE PARTS
We were very lucky with the weather on Wednesday and enjoyed playing outside with our friends across the stage.
Unfortunately, there is a problem with the WordPress site, so we are unable to include any photographs this week. We have been busy learning though.
SPARE CLOTHES PLEA
If anyone has any spare pants(boys and girls), socks and tights, could you please donate them to our class box- thank you very much in advance.
Mrs Munro will be teaching the class for the next four Mondays and will continue to teach on her normal days. Mrs Bailey will continue to teach P1M on Tuesdays.
Enjoy the weekend everyone.
P1B Reflective Friday 18.11.22
Good afternoon!
Literacy
This week, we learned the b and u sounds. We practised recognising the difference between b and d using the word ‘bed’ and dabbing only the b bubbles! We also had fun popping lots of bubblewrap! We also learned two new tricky words: put and his. In general, with our tricky words, we can sound out the first sound to help us remember what the word is (apart from ‘the’!).
For writing, our prompt was “I had a big…”. We all had a go at hearing the sounds and writing the prompt, and there were some great drawings of giants, dinosaurs and cakes. For Scottish Book Week, we talked about our favourite books and when we like to read.
Numeracy
This week, we continued work on our number bonds to 10 and how to use a number line. We practised our number formation for numerals 0-9. Backwards 3s and 7s were the most common slip that we will work on. We also had a refresher on 3D shapes, with cylinder and cuboid being the trickiest to remember.
Health and Wellbeing
In PE this week, we worked on throwing and catching, before playing a P1B favourite – Clear the Playground. We also looked at People Who Help Look After Us as part of our RSHP learning. We talked about the police, family, nurses, refuse collectors and many more. For Anti-Bullying week, we read a story with Mrs Conlin about being kind and talked about what bullying is.
Other Areas
We have been learning Away in a Manger with the signalong signs as part of our Nativity preparations, as well as our 4 other songs! Your child has their line to learn in their purple folder. Next week, we will start putting it all together. Thank you also to those who have brought in something from their family’s country.
Apologies for no photos this week, we are having technical issues with the blog.
Have a great weekend,
Miss Croal

Independent learning
The children have been developing a wide range of skills through independent learning opportunities in class.
Unfortunately, due to an issue with the WordPress site, we are unable to upload any photographs of our learning this week, but please be assured we have been just as busy learning as usual.
Literacy.
This week we have introduced the letter sounds b and u as well as the ‘tricky’ words put and his.
Tricky words are words which we cannot sound out phonetically so we need to learn them by heart. We would like the children to learn to write these words from memory as well as being able to recognise and read them by sight. Use the” Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check” strategy ( this should be self explanatory, but if you have any questions about this approach, please ask)
Our writing/storytelling prompt this week was our friends and our learning.
Numeracy and Maths
We have continued to revise and try to learn the number bonds for 10.Please help your child to learn these number facts with instant recall. You can use questions such as
- What goes with 2 to make 10 ?
- What is the partner number for 6 to make 10 ?
- Tell me a pair of numbers which add up to 10
You make wish to let your child play this game to reinforce their learning. ( adult choose the number bonds button, then select the ‘make 10’ option.
We have also started to discuss pattern, ready for a focus next week on pattern and symmetry.
Our Core numeracy skills this week were
- writing the numerals 6 – 10 ( and beyond) correctly
- counting backwards from 10 (or 20 for some pupils).
- naming the next number in an isolated short backwards number sequence. ie. I say, 10, 9, 8 (they say 7)
- establishing a collection (give me 9 counters/raisins/etc)
- counting a collecting with accurate 1-1 correspondence
- recognising numerals
- sequencing a short selection of numerals ( e.g. 5,6,7,8)
- making instant finger patterns (show me 6 fingers without counting them)
- recognising dice patterns and clapping the amount of dots on the dice
Our challenge numeracy skills were.
- adding two collections with the second one screened ( e.g. here are 8 counters, there are 5 more hiding under this pot, how many altogether?)
- sequencing numerals within the range 0-100
- naming the number after a given number (0-30)
- counting backwards from 30, starting and stopping at different points
- investigating which equal groups can be made from a given number ( e.g. can I make 2 equal groups/3 equal groups/4 equal groups/5 equal groups from 12 counters? What about if I have 16 counters, or 18 etc)
Looking ahead to next week.
Lots of Nativity practice next week – please make sure you know your line!
Other areas of the curriculum
We have continued to find our about the story of the Nativity and have been practising some songs to help us tell the story.
We had further discussion about people who help us and found out about the roles of a police officer and someone who works on a train serving snacks.
Another very successful loose parts activity session with lots of scientific investigations.
In music we sang songs and played games designed to develop skills of keeping a steady beat. We also explored using our voices in different ways.
In PE we have been focusing on working in teams, sharing resources and following a circuit of activities.
We enjoyed a road safety magic show on Monday. Stop, look, listen and think.
It has been Scottish Book week. The children will today bring home a bag of resources from the Scottish Book trust.
This week’s homework and other information
- Learn your nativity line off by heart . Speak slowly, clearly and loud!
- Learn to read and write this week’s tricky words.
- Use the blue letter cards to practice building and blending words
A reminder to please name all items of clothing and shoes, and to check names on items brought home in case your child accidentally acquires a jumper belonging to someone else.

Dear Parents/Carers,
We have had a very busy week in P2! Here is a summary of our learning.
Literacy
In phonics we have been learning about magic e. The magic ‘e’ rule, sometimes known as silent ‘e’, is where the ‘e’ at the end of a word is silent but changes the way that the word is spoken. This happens when ‘e’ is the second letter in a split digraph with another vowel sound, such as in the word ‘cape’. The ‘a’ says its name (ay) rather than its sound (ah).
Here is a short Alphablocks video clip which demonstrates this.
Alphablocks : Magic – Series 1 – YouTube
This week we have focussed on the ‘long a’ sound with ‘magic e’ (e.g. cape, ate, made, game, gate). We know that in these words the letter ‘a’ says its name rather than its sound (ay rather than ah).
In our writing lesson we read Peace At Last then created our own versions of the story with Baby Bear trying to find somewhere to sleep. We are structuring our writing with a beginning, middle and end.
We have continued to work on the letter c and a in cursive script.
It has been Scottish Book Week so we have enjoyed participating in fun whole school activities such as ‘Stop, Drop and Read’ and visiting the library in the upper landing.
At home:
- Try to find examples of magic e words in print around the house or on signs when you are out and about.
- Write out the words can, at, hat, tap, mad, cap. Ask your child to read the base word. Then draw a magic e on to the end of the word and ask your child to read the word again. Can they explain what has changed and why?
- Continue to practise Tricky Words Blocks 1-4 and ORT key words. An idea for a game is to hide some word cards around a room (your child must not look). They then have to find the word cards and bring them back to you saying the words as they find them.
- Handwriting. Here is a useful website which has animations to show how to correctly form each letter. Please note that the f and z that we use are in the ‘alternative / non scheme letters’ section.
Continuous Cursive letter choice 1 beginners (teachhandwriting.co.uk)
Maths
In maths we have been learning to talk about everyday events that involve chance using the vocabulary: impossible, unlikely, likely and certain.
At home you could discuss these scenarios and ask your child which word they would choose to describe how likely it is that it will happen.
- It will rain tomorrow.
- I will eat Weetabix tomorrow.
- Scotland will win the next World Cup football tournament.
- I will sleep in my own bed tonight.
- I will get my hair cut this week.
- I will go home in a blue car.
In our number work we have been working on our addition skills. Here is a game to play at home. Choose from one of seven levels. There is an option to slow it down or to use a timer, you can choose what is best for you.
Think about which strategy you find useful when you are adding. There are 3 strategies below:
- Use concrete materials (such as beads or pasta) to make the sum and count the objects.
- Start on the big number (put it in your head) then count on.
- Use a number line or 100 square to start on the correct number then count on the correct number of times.
Addition Fruit Splat Game – 7 levels – Math Game (sheppardsoftware.com)
We are also continuing to work on rapid recall of number bonds to 10. We have noticed that when we are making links to larger addition sums, they are finding this tricky. For example the link between 7+3=10 and 17+3=20.
Here is a fun song to use at home to help with this.
I Know My Number Bonds 10 | Number Bonds to 10 | Addition Song for Kids | Jack Hartmann – YouTube
Other Curricular Areas
- We had a visit from the Road Safety magic show. We worked hard to remember the motto ‘Stop, Look, Listen, Think’.
- We enjoyed a session of loose parts before the rain set in on Tuesday!
- It has been anti-bullying week so we listened to the story of Enemy Pie and discussed the issues raised.
- We enjoyed fun activities today as part of Children in Need.
- Our PE lessons focussed on a range of team work games.
Here are a selection of photos from this week.
