Reading

New reading books will come home today (Monday). Please remember to bring in your book every day so that you can work on tasks in class. We will collect books in on a Thursday. Most children are remembering their books every day- well done Golden Treasures!

We are continuing to work on reading with fluency. Practise reading as much as you can at home. Keep practising reading the tricky words. We are also looking at our favourite characters in the stories we read and why we like them.

P6NM Week Beginning 22nd September 2020

We had a really enjoyable week in P6NM. One of the main things we focused on this week was our class assembly. Well done to everyone for contributing today. I am proud of you all!

If you still have your learning story at home can you please bring it back in ASAP! Thank you to everyone who has already done this.

Here is a summary of our learning this week.

Literacy

  • We used this shorter week to revise the spelling already covered this term.
  • We discussed the themes of the different books we are reading in class.
  • In Writing we used paragraphs to organise the different sections and we investigated using different sentence types and lengths.

Long sentences can:

  • create a slow rhythm
  • include plenty of descriptive detail
  • create a sense of time dragging

Short sentences can:

  • create a choppy, punchy rhythm
  • draw attention to dramatic thoughts or actions
  • create a sense of panic or breathlessness
Opportunities for home learning:
  • Our group reading homework is due for Tuesday 29th September, please see the reading record for the pages to be read.
  • Talk to an adult at home about the themes of different books you have read. For example, acceptance (if a character supports other characters and their differences) or overcoming obstacles (if a character does not let obstacles stop them from achieving their goals).
  • Write a paragraph describing how you are being chased by a hungry, flesh-eating monster. Remember to use a mixture of long and short sentences for effect!

Maths

In maths we looked more at the rule of the order of operations (BODMAS) We investigated how the order of operations can change the answer in a calculation. We know that we start by looking at multiplication and division before addition and subtraction. We used this order to carry out calculations correctly.

We also worked on multi step word problems. Here are some examples of the kind of questions we were answering:

Image preview
Opportunities for home learning:
  • Write the numbers 2, 12, 6 and 3 in this order several times. Write any signs you choose between the numbers (including brackets) and find as many different answers as you can. For example:

2 × (12 ÷ 6) × 3 = 12

(2 × 12) – (6 × 3) = 6

(2 + 12) ÷ (6 ÷ 3) = 7

  • Explain to someone at home how the order of operations changes the answer to a calculation.
  • Log into Education City and use the Username P6NM and Password P6NM. Click on Homework and there is an activity to complete in the folder called ‘Problem Solving’.

https://www.educationcity.com/

Other areas of the curriculum:

  • We recapped on Road Safety messages such as Stop, Look, Listen, Think! This was as part of our preparation for assembly.
  • We enjoyed sharing our learning in assembly.
  • We enjoyed the outdoors and the maths treasure hunts that we have been creating.

Have a lovely weekend,

P3MB Friday 25.9.20

Hello everyone

We hope that you enjoyed the long weekend. We enjoyed hearing about all the lovely things you were doing.

This week we have been learning:

NUMERACY

We have been looking at using different addition strategies and this week we were using the largest number first when adding two numbers together. We were playing games, completing worksheets and using the iPads to help us practise.

In mental maths we were counting in sequences of 3s and 4s and playing ‘Round the World’ to help with mental addition.

Things to try at home:

LITERACY

READING

We have been learning to summarise a story and this week we worked on summarising our current reading book. We will continue to practise this skill.

All groups had time to discuss and read their new books.

SPELLING

New spelling words were introduced and the rules discussed. The children copy them using ‘Look, Say, Cover, Write, check’. Our morning challenges give the children a chance to practise their words through a variety of games and activities.

WRITING

The children enjoyed listening to the story of ‘Waiting for Wolf’. A few children suggested writing a ‘what happens next’ story as a follow up. Their ideas were very creative and the class were very focussed and engaged while writing.

THINGS TO DO AT HOME

Ask your child to tell you the story of ‘Waiting for Wolf’ using the structure, ‘somebody, wanted, but, so, then’.

Use the same structure to summarise their reading book or other book of their choice in written form. Try to use capital letters and full stops. Encourage your child to read their writing aloud to help them to decide where full stops should go.

Practise your handwriting using pens, pencils, crayons, chalk; any materials available to you at home.

HWB

We are continuing to improve our fitness levels in PE and played a variety of running games in groups and individually to help us with this.

At outdoor time we looked for signs of autumn and created a face with the natural materials we found in the wooded part of the playground.

FRENCH

We played bingo to practise our numbers 0-13 and practised saying : hello, goodbye and how are you. We learned a song to help us with this. Ask your child to teach you!

LOST PROPERTY

Please make sure your child’s name is on all their clothing, including shoes. Many of the shoes are of similar styles and this can make it confusing when changing into indoor/outdoor shoes several times a day.

Have a lovely weekend.

P1 Lions Reflective Friday 25.9.20

Welcome to the Primary 1 Lion’s blog!

The Lion’s have had another great week in Primary 1! We have had lots of fun playing with our friends both inside the classroom and outside in the playground.

Each P1 pupil were given a purple book bag today. Although at the moment reading books are not being sent home, we would like the children to bring the purple bag to school each day. It will be used to send home any paper communications which are required, and for the return of any forms. If the children have drawings or worksheets which they have completed in school then they will bring them home in the purple bags too. The children’s snack can also be popped in the bag, negating the need to bring a bulky schoolbag. Lunch bags and water bottles can be carried separately. If your child has a Tupperware type lunch box rather than one with a handle, it can be brought in a lightweight carrier bag such as one from a supermarket. We appreciate that the children love the novelty of having a special schoolbag, but current covid related restrictions on cloakrooms and storage of bags make it tricky to store the large quantity of rucksacks appropriately.

Please check and empty your child’s book bag daily to avoid a large build up of contents which may hide important communications.

Thank you for your continued support.

Literacy

This week we learned two more sounds: ‘s’ and ‘i’.

We are still loving to watch Geraldine the Giraffe to help introduce the new learning. There is a video for every letter so you could watch the sounds we have learned at school again at home. (video below) We also learn the jolly phonics song for each sound. This week we even took our snakes on a walk around the classroom and pretended to be mice covered in sticky ink. This helps us learn the sounds as it brings the stories about the sounds to life. We also enjoyed trying to blend the sounds together to start making words. We used magnetic letters on whiteboards to do this. The full list of jolly phonics songs is linked below, find the sounds we know and have a practice at home! It would be good if you could practice the sounds we have learned with your child by recognising the letter, saying the sound and blending sounds together to make words.

We also did another piece of writing this week. We talked about what it looks like to fasten up a coat or jacket. We practised putting on our coats with a partner and looked at what their hands and body were doing. This helped us draw a story of a time when we have had to put on our coats ourselves. We then told our story in a picture where we had to draw a very detailed and colourful picture. Well done P1 for completing your another piece of writing!

Here is our literacy home learning:

Numeracy

This week we continued the SEAL maths programme which teaches children the foundation skills in maths. We practised counting forwards and backwards to 10 and beyond together, counting claps, recognising dice patterns and random dot patterns and counting in sequences. The children are already showing that they are retaining the knowledge they are learning, which is showing greatly in our small group time.

We also have continued to practise writing numbers with the help of our number animal friends. Each number has a story which helps the children to remember what the number looks like. This week we learned about Naughty Nine and Tiger Ten. The children have loved learning how to write the numbers with the help of the animals! I asked each child to choose 3 numbers they find the trickiest to write to practice at home. They can practice writing them, making them out of sticks or leaves. Writing them in sad. Drawing them on somebodies back or if you can think of a fun and exciting way to practice drawing numbers, I would love to see their work!

The video below is also great for practising the skills we are currently learning in numeracy. Have a go at home and challenge someone in your family to have a go with you.

Other Areas

P1 has also been having lots of fun playing outside in the playground. In P.E we have been working on our fitness and throwing skills. This week we were practising throwing bean bags into hoops from a distance and working together as a team in our exciting races.

This week we also continued our castles topic. Thank you so much for bringing in the materials so that we could build our castles. The children loved building them and getting messy painting. This allowed for the children to be creative and explore different materials to build their very own castle!

We have had lots of fun developing our social skills by playing with our peers in the classroom. We have lots of fun drawing pictures and making crafts, playing in the home corner and reading in the book corner. We also have lots of fun building castles and towers with the construction blocks. There is always lots of fun things to do in the classroom to support our learning and play.

Things to Try at Home

  • Ask your child to give you X amount of various things. For example sticks, leaves, stones. Whatever you can find. This will help with our counting skills.
  • Practice using your ‘bunny ears’. Ask your child to show you a number on their fingers using the bunny ears method. They should practice holding up the number of fingers straight away without needing to count each finger. They then look at their fingers to check if they are correct. This is great for numeracy development.
  • Ask and adult to clap their hands so many times, can you count how many times they clapped? For an extra tricky challenge try clapping your hands at different speeds, for example 2 slow and 3 quick. Can your child count the number of claps?
  • Can you recognise dice patterns within different shapes?
  • Practice making words out of the sounds we have learned so far – ‘a’ ‘t’ ‘p’ ‘n’ ‘s’ and ‘i’ – for an extra challenge can you write and sound out the words you have made?

P1 Lion’s Favourite Things of the Week!

“I enjoyed doing maths this week.” – Sofie

“I liked making my castle.” – Isla

“I liked playing in the castle.” – Chloe

“I liked playing outside with my friends.” – Alex

“I liked jumping on the number squares.” – Haniya

“I enjoyed building my castle.” – Abigail

Happy Weekend!

  • Ms Leach is teaching the class on Monday.
  • Parents evening times can be booked from Monday via the email sent home.
  • Also, it would be greatly appreciated if you could drop off and collect your child from the top of the steps in the upper playground. The small courtyard outside the classroom sometimes becomes too busy, especially now with 3 classes dismissing in this area.
  • P.E will be on Mondays and Thursdays – please come dressed and ready for P.E.
  • This was emailed home last week regarding reading in P1. Here is another copy in case you didn’t see it.

Thank you for your continued support with your child’s learning and time in school, it is greatly appreciated. I hope you have a lovely weekend and I look forward to seeing you on Monday!

P6J Blog 25.09.20

Please note that Literature Circles will meet on Thursday next week as Mrs Bailey will be teaching the class on Wednesday. All pupils must complete their reading before then in order to participate in their Literature Circle meeting.

Here is a summary of our learning this week:

This was written by Gregor, Nayana and Freya

Spelling – The spelling rule for next week is: sion says /shun/ in the final syllable.

Super: vision pension decision division revision conclusion confusion invasion television erosion

Fantastic: explosion confusion transfusion intrusion collision supervision disillusion progression compression

Tricky words: whole hole

Literacy – We wrote a poem in handwriting to practice our cursive letters.

We also watched a video called The Lighthouse and re-wrote it in our own words to practice varying sentence length. We use long, medium and short sentences for different effects.

We used a reading comprehension to answer questions about Roald Dahl. We have been making sure that we are answering in full sentences.

ReadingThis week, each Literature Circle set the number of pages they have agreed to read for their next meeting on Thursday. Here is a reminder of the pages:

  • Framedpages 149- 207
  • Who’s a Big Bully Then?   chapters 1 and 2
  • Friday Foreverchapter 1 and 2
  • Our Citypages 82-105
  • The Accidental Time Travelerchapters 25-30
  • How Kirsty Jenkins Stole the Elephantchapters 16-21
  • Beetle Boy chapters 12-16

Home Learning:

  • Set reading books to be completed by Thursday. Please bring your book back to school on Thursday to meet in your Literature Circle.
  • Have a look in your reading books for the author using different sentence lengths. Why do you think they have chosen to use short/long sentences? Are the slowing or building the pace? Are the building suspense or showing the character’s shock?

Maths –

This week in maths we have been learning about BODMAS. BODMAS shows us the order of operations which means brackets, order, division, multiplication, addition and subtraction.

We have been using Beat that to answer rounding and multiplication questions quickly and accurately. We have been practising our mental agility by rounding to the nearest 10,100,1000 and dividing by 10,100,1000.

Home learning:

  • Create a series of calculations to be solved by BODMAS. Create an answer sheet for your sums and make sure the answers aren’t negative numbers.
  • Practise your timetables. You can use a game on TopMarks to practise this skill.

Other:

  • We have been creating Beethoven’s 5th symphony listening maps.
  • We also have been finishing of our perspective drawings.
  • With Mrs Bailey we did R.M.E – we were learning about the story of Joshua.
  • In outdoor learning, we did a game called ‘escargot’ (Snail) to practise our French numbers from 1-20.
  • In P.E, we did our a beep test again to test whether our fitness has improved.
  • We also have been reading our class novel (The Boy at the Back of the Class) and discussing some of the main themes of the book.

Have a lovely weekend!

Buckstone Primary School

P5B Reflective Friday 25.9.20

Good afternoon everyone.

Literacy

Our spelling pattern was

  • Adding suffix er / est.
  • er and est are both suffixes beginning with a vowel and so are treated in the same way as ing and ed
  • Remember Double the final consonant in the root word before adding the suffix er / est to keep the vowel before short.

Here are the words

rounder                    brightest

neater                     hardest

softer                       sharpest

smaller                    deepest

longer                     quickest

Here are the children’s reflections from our busy week and ideas for home learning.

Have a great weekend
