For the next couple of weeks in P1L we will be doing a mini Castle topic. Last week I observed many of the children writing letters to Kings and Queens, building castles with the bricks and pretending to be royal in the house corner. So I’m hoping this topic will be exciting and engaging for our learning.
Next week we will be building our own castles out of different materials, so if possible could your child bring in any cardboard boxes, shoe boxes, plastic containers etc, they would like to use by Friday. This is so that all items can be stored in the classroom cupboard and quarantined over the weekend.

Reading
New reading books will come home today (Monday). Please remember to bring in your book every day so that you can work on tasks in class. We will collect books in on a Thursday- we were so impressed this week that everyone remembered to return their books on time- well done!
We are continuing to work on reading with fluency. Practise reading as much as you can at home. Keep practising reading the tricky words.

Welcome to the Primary 1 Lion’s blog!
The Lion’s have had another great week in Primary 1! We have had lots of fun playing with our friends both inside the classroom and outside in the playground. Please ensure that all children have a waterproof jacket, so we can go outside to play in all weathers.
Literacy
This week we learned our first two sounds! ‘a’ and ‘t’
We talked about words which we knew that began with the sounds and practised writing the letters. We also learned the jolly phonics songs for both sounds and had lots of fun singing them together. You could practice the songs and actions at home with your child!
Numeracy
This week we started the SEAL maths programme which teaches children the foundation skills in maths. We practised counting forwards and backwards to 10 and beyond together, counting out collections and trying to show finger patterns without counting/looking at our hands. These are all things you could practice at home.
We also have been practising writing numbers with the help of our number animal friends. Each number has a story which helps the children to remember what the number looks like. This week we learned about Greedy Zero the Gorilla, Penguin One, Ticklish Two the Swan, Butterfly Three, Feathery Four the Bird and Frisky Five the Kangaroo. The children have loved learning how to write the numbers with the help of the animals!
Other Areas
P1 has also been having lots of fun playing outside in the playground. In P.E we practised listening to instructions by playing games, getting into groups of a particular number and working on our spatial awareness when running around the playground. We also worked on our fitness by warming up and doing a mini fitness routine together.
This week we also did a mini topic all about friendship! We learned why it is important to be a good friend, how we can be a good friend and how we can be kind to people in our class. We also learned about why it is important to have kind hands whilst at school and at home. With a partner we traced our hands and decorated them with lots of lovely feathers and pompoms. This is to remind us that are hands are to be kind to everyone around us. Here are our kind hands.
In outdoor learning this week our art focus was to create a picture using natural resources found in the playground with a partner. Lots of the pairs decided to make a fire, which many of us pretended to roast marshmallows on and warm are hands on. Some pairs also decided to make types of food such as a Pizza. The P1s had lots of fun working with a new friend. In relation to our friendship topic, we also played a fun and exciting pretending/challenge game. Each child was given either an orange or green piece of paper. Each new challenge we had to find someone who had the opposite colour of card to work with. For each challenge the pair had to decide and imagine how they would overcome it. Some of the challenges were, crossing a river, climbing a really tall tree, cooking their favourite food and creating a silly dance. We had lots of fun playing this game!
We have had lots of fun developing our social skills by playing with our peers in the classroom. We have lots of fun drawing pictures and making crafts, playing in the home corner and reading in the book corner. We also have lots of fun building castles and towers with the construction blocks. There is always lots of fun things to do in the classroom to support our learning and play.
Things to Try at Home
We would love it if the P1s could continue to practice their independence skills. These have improved greatly over the week but could still be quicker and smoother. Try and practice: Changing shoes (fastening buckles and Velcro themselves, making sure they are on the right foot), putting on, zipping up jackets (and turning sleeves the correct way round), opening snacks themselves and tidying up after play.
Ask your child to give you X amount of various things. For example sticks, leaves, stones. Whatever you can find. This will help with our counting skills.
Practice recognising their name and practice writing their name with playdough, sand and other natural materials you can find. They could also use these materials to practice writing numbers.

It has been another busy week of learning in P4W.
We have been developing skills across the curriculum.
Literacy
We are developing our reading skills and have a ‘home’ reading book to share. This should be brought back into school, ready for the reading team’s next meeting.
We are becoming Reading Detectives as we continue to read our class novel ‘Ottoline and the Yellow Cat’. We are looking for clues in the text, making connections as we read and deciding which information is important and what might be misleading.
We are finding information about the characters and asking questions.
Giving our opinion on a text and discussing a variety of texts with a partner and in a team.
Developing our writing skills, using adjectives to describe nouns.
Developing our knowledge of speech marks in a text.
Developing our joined up cursive handwriting.

This week we have been learning:
NUMERACY
We have been sequencing and ordering numbers to 20, to 100 and some of us have been ordering larger numbers.
In mental maths we have been partitioning numbers, thinking about adding ten more and ten less.
We continued to practise counting in 4s.
Some comments from the children:
‘I’ve learned to count in 3s using the songs on the Smartboard’.
‘I’ve used the posters in the classroom to help me count in 10s.’
‘Number games help me to count in 4s’.
LITERACY
In reading we have been learning to make predictions about what might happen next using our reading books.
We were thinking about using full stops and capital letters correctly and wrote sentences of our own to practise this.
We had a Big Writing assessment where we wrote a personal piece about something we had done after school or at the weekend.

TARGETS
We talked about targets for literacy, numeracy and health and wellbeing for Term One and wrote our individual star steps.
PE
We continued to work on our fitness and recorded our times on Tuesday and Thursday, trying to beat our own scores.
FRENCH
We practised saying the numbers 1-13 in French and played some games outside to help us learn.
Dear parents
We are trying to assess your child’s reading level so that we can give them a suitable reading book. Although we have information from your child’s previous teacher this may be out of date as the children have missed a whole term of school. Please bear with us as we get to know your child and their reading level. We may mix up groups and try your child on different stages of books.
PE is on Tuesdays and Thursdays. All PE for the foreseeable future will be outdoors. The children are encouraged to come to school on these days dressed in clothing which is suitable for physical outdoor activity.

Reading There may be some movement in groups and stages over the coming weeks as I continue to assess where each child is , since the school closures in March. This also means that they have not been given a specific reading day. Hopefully we will get into a regular pattern very soon. Thank you for your cooperation. It would be handy to use the purple reading bags from P3 if possible.

Other areas
Music We were exploring rhythm and used our hands to clap with the music. then we made up our our own.
We have been using different media to draw. We designed hedgehog houses with chalk outside.
PE We played team games and developed ball skills. We were practicing dodging and also working together as a team. We have also been working on sportsmanship and the importance or sticking to rules.
The weather has also played a part especially in Outdoor Learning. We looked at leaves and tried to identify some of them but it was very windy.
Today we had a special outdoor learning time using the loose parts in the shed. More on this next week! It was awesome!

We are enjoying our new class novel “Ice Cat” and have been making predictions about what will happen next in the story and how the Ice Cat can move! There have been some very interesting ideas from “Being caused by the moon like with werewolves” to “It’s some sort of magic” and “It could be aliens”! We’re looking forward to finding out!
We have also continued with our group reading books, practising reading with fluency, prediction and answering questions. Please ensure that your child has their reading folder with them every day.
We created characters and wrote about them. We thought about: Who they are, what they are and what makes them special.
For spelling we have been looking at another set of consonant blends, completing a range of activities to win treasure and completed dictation today.
