P2/3 Golden Treasures Week Beginning 14th September

Another great week in the Golden Treasures class!

Learning stories- we hope you have enjoyed looking at the children’s termly plan, targets and star steps at home this week. P2 parents- if you haven’t already then please return the learning stories to school as soon as possible. Many thanks.

Almost everyone has been great at remembering their reading books each day- well done- this is so helpful!

I

Here’s what we’ve been learning this week.

Literacy

  • P2s and P3s- continuing to revise our tricky words from Block 1 and 2- reading and spelling
  • P2s- revising ee/ea sound
  • P3s- spelling words with consonant sounds ng, nd and nk
  • Reading- redesigning the front cover of the story Operation Night Monster.
  • Reading- using our reading skills to find words with 3, 4 and 5 letters in them- we were amazing at this task!
  • Handwriting- practising our cursive letter formation. We are starting to work on curly caterpillar letters– so far we have practised c, a and o. We practise cursive writing throughout the school. At the moment we are continuing to work on our letter formation and are not joining our letters yet.
  • Writing- working on what makes a super sentence?

Ideas for home learning

  • Find words with your sound/spelling pattern in a book, magazine or newspaper
  • Create a new front cover for one of your favourite books: can you add information such as the title and author?
  • Practising handwriting together at home. We have attached a sheet to show how the letters are formed with a rhyme attached to each letter

block-1-and-2-tricky-wordsDownloadspelling-activitiesDownloadletter-formation-handwriting-sheet-with-rhymes-continuous-cursiveDownload

Numeracy and Maths

  • saying numbers sequences forwards and backwards from a variety of starting points
  • saying the next three numbers in a sequence for example 20….21, 22, 23
  • ordering numbers from smallest to largest
  • counting in tens both forwards and backwards
  • developing our understanding of place value (hundreds) tens and units by playing games including Secret Number and by using coins (£1, 10ps and 1ps) to pay for items
  • reading and displaying information in charts: using tallies to record totals and displaying information in a pictogram.

Ideas for home learning

Other Areas

  • Outdoor PE- fitness circuits and running- please remember to wear PE kit for school on a Tuesday and Thursday
  • Starting our learning about sound in science. We took this learning outside and worked with a partner to hear as many sounds as possible all around us.
  • Before we started our new sound topic we thought about what sound is and here are our ideas…

What is sound?

Angus “something you hear.”

Sophie “something you can sound out.”

Ben “something you can record!”

Meg “a wave through your ear.”

Andrey “something someone says to you.”

Spencer “a voice box like Bumblebee from Transformers that can speak.”

Megan “when someone shouts in your ear.”

Ruari “when you talk it makes sound.”

Samuel “comes out of your lungs.”

Callum “you can make sounds yourself, bees can make sounds too.”

Daniel “sounds can reach the Isle of Skye in half an hour!”

  • Designing front covers for our Roald Dahl booklets. Learning a little more about Roald Dahl.

Ideas for home learning

  • How many different sounds can you hear around your own home/outside? Write, draw or even record them.
  • Teach an adult how to do the 5 different fitness stations we have worked on- can you remember them all?

Here are some photos of our learning in class this week.

Have a great weekend!

P1Tigers Reflective Friday 18th September

Literacy

  • We have now shared all the memory boxes which have been brought into school. if your child has not yet brought theirs and would still like to do so, please send it to school as soon as possible.
  • We continue to introduce and reinforce some single sounds and have been using them to create and read words. This week’s letters were n and p, and we made the words pat, pan, nap, tan, tap an and at
  • We have started to create visual stories in our jotters – We visualised a situation, then recreated the image by drawing lots of detail. We used our pictures to  help us re-tell the story. This process helps us to develop some important pre-writing skills.

Home learning ideas:

  • Download this  Home Learning Template 18.9. On the sheet you will find the letters we have been learning this week along with a list of words to create. You can choose to print the sheet, or simply write out the letters of small pieces of paper. Use the letter cards to create simple words and ask your child to firstly, identify each sound, count how many sounds (phonemes) they hear, then blend or squish the sounds together into one word. Next, say a word which can be made using the letters. say it slowly and clearly – asking your child to identify the sounds they can hear before they ‘make’ the word with the cards
  • Here is a copy of P1 Reading – Information for parents which was emailed out earlier this week.
  • Go on a letter hunt. Look around you for places where you can see the letters p, a,  t or n.
  • Encourage your child to make their name in different ways: in the sand, with flour, play dough, etc.

Numeracy & Maths

  • We have been exploring numbers to 10 or 20 with matching activities.
  • We have been practising instantly making and recognising finger patterns. Doing it on our head ( the bunny ears game) makes it a bit tricky as we can’t see our fingers, we just have to feel the pattern.
  • We have been working on recognising numbers and dot patterns (to 10).
  • We have explored numbers to 10 (and beyond for some)
  • We have worked on sequencing numbers.
  • We have worked on counting forwards and backwards from different starting points.
  • We have been naming the next number in a forwards or backwards sequence
  • We are working on number formation. – this week’s numbers were 2, 5, 6 and 7
  • Counting and number recognition
  • We have been exploring the properties of 2D and 3D shape.

Home learning ideas

  • Play the bunny ears finger pattern game. Watch this video of a boy playing with his mum.
  • Number hunt: Ask your child to look for specific numbers in the street: buses, house numbers and ask your child to say the number that goes after and before that number.
  • Practice number formation of the numbers 0 to 10 (or more if your child is confident with this already)
  • Count items: ask your child to give an X number of things: leaves, stones, sticks.
  • You may choose to play this game. Please choose from sequencing or ordering (forwards) from 1- 10 or 1-20
  • Play Three for me, one for you . The adult says three numbers in a sequence, either forwards or backwards, the child says the next number in the sequence. e.g. 6,7,8………9  or 14,13, 12…….11. You can choose the level of challenge by staying within 10, or going up to 20.
  • Play this 2D shape game

Other areas of the curriculum:

PE – we have been continuing to practise the tricky skills of hopping and skipping. We also have been learning to play some games which help us to develop our speed, travelling, and listening skills.

On PE days the children should come dressed for outdoor PE, there is no need to bring a PE bag with a change of clothes. On these days, we would ask that the children wear trainers or similar for the playground and PE. It is really hard to hop when you are wearing wellies ! (Wellies are ideal on non-PE days though)

Outdoor learning:

We discussed facial expressions and emotions and used natural materials to create some faces. Can you tell how these ‘people’ were feeling today ?

On Friday we were able to access our outdoor loose parts shed again. We had great fun developing a wide range of physical, co-operative, creative and investigative skills.

Independent learning:

These are some photos of the learning through play that we had the opportunity to experience this week:

Other things….

  • The children’s spare clothes are kept in the classroom in the cubby holes close to their shoes.
  • It would be really helpful if all your child’s items could be labelled (packed lunches and water bottles too)
  • Please be mindful when choosing a snack for your child: make sure your child can open it independently. We are also a nut-free school.
  • We politely ask that you give your child only water in their bottles.
  • We still have no claimants for the lost property items which we posted last week, please have another look to see if you recognise anything.

We are very proud of our Terrific Tigers!

Thank you for your continued support in your child’s learning.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Reflective Friday – Gregor, Lauren, Jack, Andrew, Sam and Charlie

Literacy

In literacy this week we have been preparing a discursive essay. This essay is about Daleks moving into Buckstone, should they stay or leave? We looked at some more advanced words to use and looked at other Discursive essays. We also finished chapter 4 on Kensuke’s kingdom. Michael is still on the island and he has found an old man who looks like an orang-utan. We did some drama to help us imagine how Michael feels, we did role on the wall while others asked us questions. have a look at the pictures below. We also have done lots of fun morning challenges to get our brains working in the morning. [especially Monday mornings]

Numeracy/ Maths

In maths we rounded decimals and significant digits, it challenged most of us. 4 or under rounds down and 5 and over rounds up, an example would be: 37567 rounded to the nearest 100 would be 37600 and rounded to 2 significant digits would be 38000. We used it to build a millionaire power point. We enjoyed building our PowerPoints. We were adding decimals up to 4 points. We all need to speed up and improve our accuracy.

IDL/other

This week we learnt about Tsunamis. We Made big cubes. And on each side, we did facts about tsunamis. We are going to make a mini wall of our topic work (natural disasters). We also learnt about volcanic eruptions and how the tectonic plates work. How volcanic eruptions work is the lava slowly rises. But when there is too much pressure the volcano erupts!

Additionally, we did German and learnt about numbers up to 20 we played a few games of bingo using the German numbers, BINGO!

Furthermore, in PE we were working on tactical games this week we played octopus. The rules are 2 people get put in the middle and when they say octopus. Everyone runs across trying not to get tug by the catchers!

What we enjoyed

We enjoyed doing P.E this week. In P.E we played a game called Sharks and Fishes. In the game there are 3 Sharks, and they are trying to catch the Fishes. You need to cross a part of the area and if you get caught you become seaweed, they can tig you, but they can’t move. The last 3 Fishes become the Sharks for the next game. This game was so much fun! This game also has a few different names.  We also had fun playing German bingo!

Next steps/home learning

  • Something we could do is find words that are good for our Discursive essay.
  • Maybe if you spend money you can count it in German numbers to help remember them.
  • We can make ourselves sums so we can practice adding decimals.

P3MB Friday 18 September

Hello everyone. Here is what we have been learning this week:

Numeracy and Maths

We have been practising counting in 2s, 3s, 5s, 10s and 4s.

We have also been revising and learning our number bonds to 10 and 20. Knowing these really well will help us when we are adding amounts. To challenge us a bit further, we also worked on number bonds (or jigsaw numbers) to 100.

Things to try at home:

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

We spent some time outdoors this week learning and revising the properties of 2D shapes and we discussed the names and properties of 3D objects.

Literacy

Reading

We have been developing our skills in summarising stories. We summarised ‘A Squash and a Squeeze’ by Julia Donaldson using the structure ‘Somebody, wanted, but, so, then’ to help us.

Writing

We have been focussing on using full stops and capital letters this week. We wrote about stories about autumn and worked on completing sentences in our grammar lesson.

Handwriting

We worked on forming a, d, c and g using cursive handwriting this week.

Things to try at home:

Read a story and then retell it to someone at home using the structure, ‘Sombody, wanted, but, so then.’

Make up sentences, write them down and check you have used a capital letter and a full stop.

Practise your handwriting using pens, pencils, crayons, chalk; any materials available to you at home.

Follow this link to help you form the letters correctly:

French

We were learning to count to 13 in French by playing a fun game outside.

PE

We have been trying to beat our own scores for running and star jumps. We talked about some of our scores may have gone down instead of up!

Health and Wellbeing

We have been talking about what makes us angry or frustrated and the tools or strategies we might use to deal with these emotions.

Tools for School

We have been using our pencils and rubbers etc that we brought from home since we returned to school in August. We discussed speaking to someone at home if it was now time to replace some of our items.

Lost Property

We have a grey cardigan (M&S age 3-4) and a grey Buckstone jumper (age 7-8) in the classroom that nobody is claiming! Please have a check and say to your child if you think these belong in your family. It is really helpful if items of clothing, especially cardigans and jumpers are named so we can return lost items easily.

Have a lovely long weekend! See you all on Tuesday.

P1L Castle Topic

For the next couple of weeks in P1L we will be doing a mini Castle topic. Last week I observed many of the children writing letters to Kings and Queens, building castles with the bricks and pretending to be royal in the house corner. So I’m hoping this topic will be exciting and engaging for our learning.

Next week we will be building our own castles out of different materials, so if possible could your child bring in any cardboard boxes, shoe boxes, plastic containers etc, they would like to use by Friday. This is so that all items can be stored in the classroom cupboard and quarantined over the weekend.

Thank you for your continued support.

Reading

New reading books will come home today (Monday). Please remember to bring in your book every day so that you can work on tasks in class. We will collect books in on a Thursday- we were so impressed this week that everyone remembered to return their books on time- well done!

We are continuing to work on reading with fluency. Practise reading as much as you can at home. Keep practising reading the tricky words.
