Welcome to the Primary 1 Lion’s blog!

The Lion’s have had another great week in Primary 1! We have had lots of fun playing with our friends both inside the classroom and outside in the playground.

Literacy

This week we learned two more sounds: ‘p’ and ‘n’.

When we learn a new sound, we love watching Geraldine the Giraffe to help introduce the new learning. You could watch these again at home. (video below) We also learn the jolly phonics song for each sound. This week we even pretended to be noisy aeroplanes flying around the classroom. The full list of jolly phonics songs is linked below, find the sounds we know and have a practice at home!

We enjoyed painting pink pigs and noisy aeroplanes to help us learn the new sounds. We also enjoyed practising all the sounds we know so far outside. We drew the letters with chalk, made the letters out of leaves, sticks and rocks and also practised writing them in the sand pit. Some P1s also wrote words using the sounds we had learned so far. We also did our first piece of writing this week. We talked about a time when they had to reach up high for something. We walked around the classroom pretending to reach up high for something, imagining what it was and why we wanted it. We also thought about if there was anyone else around to help us reach it and where exactly it was, for example, up high in the sky, on a big tree, on top of a tall shelf etc. We then told our story in a picture where we had to draw a very detailed and colourful picture. Well done P1 for completing your first piece of writing!

Numeracy

This week we continued the SEAL maths programme which teaches children the foundation skills in maths. We practised counting forwards and backwards to 10 and beyond together, counting claps, recognising dice patterns and random dot patterns and counting in sequences. The children are already showing that they are retaining the knowledge they are learning, which is showing greatly in our small group time.

We also have continued to practise writing numbers with the help of our number animal friends. Each number has a story which helps the children to remember what the number looks like. This week we learned about Six, Seven and Eight. The children have loved learning how to write the numbers with the help of the animals!

The video below is also great for practising the skills we are currently learning in numeracy. Have a go at home and challenge someone in your family to have a go with you.

Other Areas

P1 has also been having lots of fun playing outside in the playground. In P.E we have been working on our fitness and spatial awareness when running around the playground. We also have been learning about different ways to move around the playground such as running, jumping, hopping, skipping etc.

This week we also started our castles topic. This is our first child-led topic in P1 and we have had such a fun week! Last week the children had been writing letters to Kings and Queens, building castles in the brick corner and playing pretend games in the house corner. This was the perfect stimulus for the topic and on Tuesday we planned what we would like to learn about. We talked about what we knew already about castles, what we would like to learn and how we would like to learn about castles. We then learned all about the different parts of a castle, went on a virtual tour of Edinburgh Castle and watched some videos about what castles were like a long time ago. We also learned about the different people who lived in castles and created our own Coat of Arms/Royal Crests. We also designed our own castles we would like to live in. To finish the week off, we created a giant castle together which has transformed our house corner into a great big lovely castle! Thank you to everyone who has provided materials for next week’s learning where each child will be building their own mini castle.

This week we also tried something new. After lunch time and playing outside, we sometimes were a little bit too energetic. So everyday we have been coming inside from lunch and doing a very brief mindfulness meditation. This allows us to relax and calm down after having lots of fun outside and settle us before continuing learning. The children are becoming experts and meditating and finding ways to relax and calm themselves. Have a practise at home, if you have time!

We have had lots of fun developing our social skills by playing with our peers in the classroom. We have lots of fun drawing pictures and making crafts, playing in the home corner and reading in the book corner. We also have lots of fun building castles and towers with the construction blocks. There is always lots of fun things to do in the classroom to support our learning and play.

Things to Try at Home

• It would be lovely if all P1s could practice recognising and writing their own name. This is something which will help with the daily routines in P1 and a vital skill to assist their learning. You could practice making your name out of materials found in your garden, creating it out of playdough, writing it in sand or colouring it in.
• Ask your child to give you X amount of various things. For example sticks, leaves, stones. Whatever you can find. This will help with our counting skills.
• Practice using your ‘bunny ears’. Ask your child to show you a number on their fingers using the bunny ears method. They should practice holding up the number of fingers straight away without needing to count each finger. They then look at their fingers to check if they are correct. This is great for numeracy development.
• Ask and adult to clap their hands so many times, can you count how many times they clapped? For an extra tricky challenge try clapping your hands at different speeds, for example 2 slow and 3 quick. Can your child count the number of claps?
• Practice making words out of the sounds we have learned so far – ‘a’ ‘t’ ‘p’ and ‘n’ – for an extra challenge can you write and sound out the words you have made?
• Could you find out any interesting facts about castles by talking to someone in your family? This would be great for both our castles topic and talking and listening skills.

• Some parents have been asking about parents evening. We still do not know what format this will take place in yet but they will be the week of 5.10.20. If you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to get in touch!
• Also, it would be greatly appreciated if you could drop off and collect your child from the top of the steps in the upper playground. The small courtyard outside the classroom sometimes becomes too busy, especially now with 3 classes dismissing in this area.
• P.E will be on Mondays and Thursdays – please come dressed and ready for P.E. (only on Thursday next week)

Another very busy week!

Literacy

This week we finished our class novel ‘A Kind of Spark’. We really enjoyed learning about the main character Addie, who is autistic. We agreed that we all admire her resilience and persistence when faced with a problem. We analysed her character traits and used evidence from the text to explain our reasoning.

We have now started a new novel called ‘Friend or Foe’ by Michael Morpurgo. It is set in World War 2 and follows the story of a boy called David when he is evacuated to the countryside. A home learning opportunity could be to find out more about the evacuations during Word War 2.

Our spelling this week focussed on the rule: tion says /shun/ in the final syllable.  This is the most regularly used spelling of the sound /shun/ as a final syllable.

Numeracy

In Numeracy we applied our knowledge of rounding to real life contexts and word problems such as football stadium capacities and distances between countries. If you would like to investigate this further, you could research the populations of different countries and round these to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000. Try to think of some calculations you could use these numbers for. Such as calculating the difference between the most and least populated country on your list.

We were also introduced to the rule of the order of operations (BODMAS) and have been applying this to some simple calculations.

Other areas of the curriculum

– we were introduced to Carl Linnaen and his work on classifying animals

– learned about how vertibrates and invertibrates are grouped according to their features

– continued to develop our fitness in circuit training

– enjoying the outdoors and taking part in a rounding scavenger hunt

Hello. It has been a very packed week again in P4H as we settle into the way of working. We have been developing numerous skills over the week.

We reflected on our week and created our Blog together

Reading We have been looking at adjectives in our reading books as well as reading in class and at home. We predicted what would happen

Spelling This week we revised the rules for ing ( the root stays the same or doubling the letter or dropping e and adding ing )

We revised our tricky words so far …could, should, would, other, another, people and water

We found that thousand, hundred, nine, eight four and two can be tricky to spell

Grammar We continued looking at adjectives and how to use them to describe characters in stories. We found some in our reading books ,

In the Storm we were being reading detectives. We talked about Annie and her family. We had to decide whether statements were true by reading the text and finding evidence .

We looked at a non fiction text about dogs and answered questions. We had to read the words carefully so that we could answer the questions. It was quite tricky.

Listening We listened a list of instructions to follow and managed to design a house.Not all the houses looked the same at the end!

Scotland

We made a list of what we want to know about Scotland and found out where it is in the world using an atlas..We worked out what we would need to use to find the answers.

PE

Designed circuits in the playground which we tested on each other. We challenged ourselves in fitness training. We had to see how many star jumps, sit ups, runs and step ups we could do in 30 seconds. We recorded them and are going to do it again in a few weeks to see if we are fitter and can beat our scores

We talked about the skills we used in our “Loose parts” outdoor learning last week. The list was very long and included using our imagination , being creative, digging, pushing, rolling , lifting , working together , sharing , caring ,thinking , listening and concentrating

Literacy

We have had a ,lot of fun being detectives and making predictions this week like Detective Ted. To make good predictions we:

• “use the pictures and words in the book”
• “use what we already know”
• “make sensible predictions”
• “say things that are likely to happen”

 We also made predictions about our group reading books.

We really enjoyed writing stories about our characters this week. We planned our stories by talking about our characters:

• “what do they want?”
• “What gets in the way”
• “Do they get what they want?”

There were lots of creative ideas and exciting stories!

For spelling we have been looking at words ending in “ng” and “nk” completing a range of activities to win treasure. WE also did our dictation sentences today.

Things to do at home:

• Keep making predictions about what you think is going to happen in different books (or TV programmes) at home. Remember to use what you have seen or read to help make predictions.
• You could try writing about your character in a different story!
• Choose a way to practise your spelling words

Maths & Numeracy

• This we week have been practising addition. We need to remember to start with the bigger number as it makes it easier to count on. We have also been learning about 2D and 3D shapes.
• We have been collecting information by carrying out surveys and practising tally charts. We have been finding out our favourite reptiles, sea creatures, colours, shapes and how we get to school. We have started to learn how to display the information collected in the tally charts by making pictograms.

Things to do at home:

• Keep on practising you skip counting for the numbers you have set as your target
• Find numbers and add them together
• Could you do a tally chart for something at home?

Other Learning

• PE – Fitness – focusing on good technique

• In PE, we are creating fitness programs in groups. This week, we have created and practiced static stretches and a cool down routine.

• We continued our mini topic on bees this week and looked at different kinds of bees and identified their appearance, habitat and if they were native or an invader. 
• In outdoor learning we played some drama games. One of them was where we had an electric ball of energy. 
• When Mrs. Bailey was teaching us on Wednesday, we learned about Beethoven’s 5th symphony and made listening maps to show the Modif. 
• We were also learning some RME with Mrs. Bailey. We learned more about the story of Moses and his journey with the Jewish people. 
• We also finished and colored our perspective drawing from last week. 

Home Learning Ideas:

Happy Friday! We have had a great week and have lots to tell you about.  

Literacy

For literacy this week we have been developing our descriptive writing skills further. We began with looking at the importance of using a variety of ‘openers’ in our sentences (such as; once upon a time, one dark and stormy night and on a gloomy morning). We enjoyed creating lots of different sentences using these different openers.

To help us practise using different openers along with all the other writing skills we have been learning, we created out own sweetie or chocolate rooms for Mr Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. The rooms had many features such as; chocolate hot tubs, candy cane bridges and chocolate waterfalls. P5M loved creating these rooms, writing a descriptive paragraph setting the scene and then reading these out to the class.

P5M previously loved going outside for spelling practise, therefore we done this again. We used any natural resources we could find to spell our weekly words. We also incorporated our spelling words into our P.E lesson, where every letter had a different exercise and we performed these while spelling out our words.

In reading we discussed what summarising is and will continue this further next week. We were also developing our comprehension skills by reading a passage about global warming and answering a range of questions about it.

Maths and Numeracy

This week we have been learning about 3D objects. We were looking at the properties of different shapes in P.E to help us (edges, surfaces/faces and corners).

Following on from previous week’s work on understanding the value of digits in numbers up to 10,000, we looked at what ‘more than’ and ‘less than’ mean. We used our number columns to help us with this (thousands, hundreds, tens and units). We also used our rounding skills to help us estimate addition and subtraction calculations. We discussed the importance of being able to estimate. P5M were really challenged this week in maths with their extension tasks. They had to work trough various work problems with a partner, using all the skills we have been working on, to work out each step of the problems. For mental maths we also had to calculate the answers to various word problems.

Try to describe different shapes you see in the environment

Practise estimating the value of different things around the house, and then check how accurate you were. You could even add addition and subtraction in (for example, estimate the number of spoons, the forks and add these values together).

Other curricular areas

• We continued with our ‘Free the Forest’ topic this week. We finished our global warming fact files from last week and wee peer assessed these, looking at what we loved and what we could do to make them even better. We also began looking at the rainforest, comparing their climate to ours and discussing the effects global warming is having on this.  
• In French we reminded ourselves of the numbers 1-20. We loved singing and dancing to a song about the numbers and playing bingo.
• P5M started our art topic this week, looking at the famous artist, Henri Rousseau. We looked at several of his famous painting, discussing the forest theme, colours and techniques he uses. We also practised our sketching skills based on plants and trees as this is a key feature in Henri Rousseau’s art work.
• We started learning how to create a powerpoint and how to add in new slides, change the design and insert pictures.

• Once we are more settled I will start to put photographs of our learning on the blog – at the moment with limited time in school this isn’t possible. We do have some super photos on our classroom display!
