The end of another busy week in the Golden Treasures class; we hoped you all enjoyed the Monday holiday.

Here’s what we’ve been learning this week.

Literacy

• P2s and P3s- continuing to revise our tricky words from Block 1 and 2- reading and spelling
• P2s- revising ew/oo sound, for example, chew, few, zoo, room
• P3s- spelling words where we need to double the consonant at the end for example, words with ss, ff, zz, ll endings, for example, hiss, huff, buzz, will
• Reading- continuing to work on our fluency skills and making predictions about our reading books.
• Reading- finishing our class novel George’s Marvellous Medicine and starting to read James and the Giant Peach.
• Handwriting- continuing to practise our cursive letter formation. We are working on curly caterpillar letters– we have practised c, a and o. We practise cursive writing throughout the school. At the moment we are continuing to work on our letter formation and are not joining our letters yet.
• Writing- continuing to work on what makes a super sentence? We wrote a piece of big writing using what we had learned.

Ideas for home learning

• Write down some words containing your spelling pattern using really fancy writing.
• Make a prediction about a book/story/tv show you haven’t watched before based on its title and and front cover/pictures. Share your predictions as a family.
• Can you write a super sentence at home that starts with a capital and ends with a full stop? What about writing a sentence that will end in a question mark?

Numeracy and Maths

• Saying numbers sequences forwards and backwards from a variety of starting points
• Saying the next three numbers in a sequence for example 20….21, 22, 23
• Sequencing and ordering numbers from smallest to largest and from largest to smallest
• Counting in tens both forwards and backwards from different starting points.
• Consolidating our understanding of place value, linking this to money.
• Reading and displaying information in charts: using tallies to record totals and displaying information in a pictogram. Starting to find out about Venn diagrams.
• Practising answering our ‘learn-it’ sums as quickly as possible.

Ideas for home learning

• Practise counting in tens- challenge: how far can you go? Can you count backwards too?
• Can you use tally marks to collect some information at home? Ideas could be counting the number of knives, forks and spoons in your cutlery drawer. Challenge: you could try to put this information into a pictogram of your own.

Other Areas

• Outdoor PE- fitness circuits and running- please remember to wear PE kit for school on a Tuesday and Thursday
• Continuing our learning about sound in science. We used our listening skills to figure out as many of the sounds as we could in a quiz. We’ve attached the link below in case you want another go at home.
• French- revising French greetings including bonjour, bon nuit, au revoir, and ca va?
• Drawing our own upside down houses in the style of Quentin Blake, using The Twits as our inspiration.

Hello, I hope you have all had a lovely week.

Literacy

In literacy we have been putting a lot of work into our descriptive writing, focusing mainly on ‘setting the scene’ (describing the setting). This week we used these skills and moved on to ‘Characterization’, where we describe a character’s appearance, personality and any other traits they have. We were delighted to use Hagrid as our character to describe. We were focusing on using ‘WOW’ words and phrases for this. For example; ‘he had a grizzly, matted beard’, ‘Hagrid is like a gentle giant’ and ‘his voice was booming like thunder’. We created a character profile for Hagrid that will help us next week with our descriptive writing.  

In reading we focused on picking out key information. This helped us create concise summaries of our reading books so far. We also practised highlighting key information in a passage and taking notes in our own words. We used mind maps and bullet points to do this. We then used our notes to create a fact file. Picking out the important information and note taking are skills we will continue to work on.

Think about how the characters are described in your reading books (school or personal). Can you picture them in your head? What good wow words and phrases did the author use to describe them?

Maths and Numeracy

This week in maths we have been focusing on mental addition strategies. We have been working through a variety of addition sums and discussing how we got the answer. For example, 46 + 51, we borrowed the 1 and added it to the 46, which then became 47 + 50. This made the calculation much simpler for us to do in our heads. We then made posters explaining out mental addition strategies.

For spelling this week we focused on the names of shapes.

Other curricular areas

• For our Free the Forest topic and science, we became experts on different plants that can be found in the rainforest. We worked in small groups and researched the plant, focusing on why is grows in that climate, and created posters to present to the class to teach them about each plant
• In French we researched France itself. We looked for the capital city, monuments, holiday destinations and population
• For art we continued looking at Henri Rousseau’s art. We use his ‘Tiger in a Tropical Storm’ painting as inspiration. We used collage to create our own versions of this famous painting, focusing on creating depth and layers

Literacy 

In spelling we did our P7 words after that we tried to find words that had they same spelling pattern like ou and ow 

We read ch5 of our class novel Kensuke’s kingdom and tried to find the different emotions and interfering Michael felt 

We were planning for our discursive essay on daleks staying in Buckstone or not to stay. We looked at ‘signpost words’ and what makes a good essay.  

Numeracy/ Maths-Iggy Emily  In maths this week we have been doing chimney sums with decimal points including adding and taking away. On Tuesday and Friday, we did numeracy ninjas most of us got blue belt or red belt. On Friday we did a morning challenge called count down, to play you must follow these rules, you get six numbers, with the six numbers you have to  make one big number.` 

IDL/other Alfie and Roni 

• In topic this week we made volcanos out of newspaper and paper cuts/rolls. After we sculpted our volcanoes, we used a mixture of hot water and PVA glue to smooth it out. We also researched about Composite, shield and cinder cone volcanoes along with Pyroclastic flows.
• We tried to figure out what type of trees are by using a guide in the P7 area.
• In PE this week we played a new tactical game called Capture the flag. We got split into two teams and the goal was to bring the other team’s flag back to your side to win.

Other things….

Purple book bags

 

Each P1 pupil will shortly be given a purple book bag. Although at the moment reading books are not being sent home, we would like the children to bring the purple bag to school each day. It will be used to send home any paper communications which are required, and for the return of any forms. If the children have drawings or worksheets which they have completed in school then they will bring them home in the purple bags too. The children’s snack can also be popped in the bag, negating the need to bring a bulky schoolbag. Lunch bags and water bottles can be carried separately. If your child has a Tupperware type lunch box rather than one with a handle, it can be brought in a lightweight carrier bag such as one from a supermarket. We appreciate that the children love the novelty of having a special schoolbag, but current covid related restrictions on cloakrooms and storage of bags make it tricky to store the large quantity of rucksacks appropriately.

Please check and empty your child’s book bag daily to avoid a large build up of contents which may hide important communications.

We are becoming Reading Detectives as we continue to read our class novel ‘Ottoline and the Yellow Cat’.

We are finding information about the main characters and identifying character traits using evidence in the text.

We concentrated on our descriptive skills this week for writing. We created a paragraph about a picture and thought about how we could use up levelled vocabulary to improve them.

We also began to learn about the skills of taking notes, we used a piece of reading about our sight and took notes of what information we thought was important.

Writing really basic sentences and then using our editing skills to up level and improve the sentence.

Maths

We continued to work on understanding the value of digits in numbers up to 100,000, we looked at what ‘more than’ and ‘less than’ mean and used the appropriate symbols to help us.

We have been learning more about 3D objects. We were looking at the properties of different shapes by using real life objects and also P.E to help us.
