P1 Lions Reflective Friday 11.9.20

Welcome to the Primary 1 Lion’s blog!

The Lion’s have had another great week in Primary 1! We have had lots of fun playing with our friends both inside the classroom and outside in the playground. Please ensure that all children have a waterproof jacket, so we can go outside to play in all weathers.

Literacy

This week we learned our first two sounds! ‘a’ and ‘t’

We talked about words which we knew that began with the sounds and practised writing the letters. We also learned the jolly phonics songs for both sounds and had lots of fun singing them together. You could practice the songs and actions at home with your child!

Numeracy

This week we started the SEAL maths programme which teaches children the foundation skills in maths. We practised counting forwards and backwards to 10 and beyond together, counting out collections and trying to show finger patterns without counting/looking at our hands. These are all things you could practice at home.

We also have been practising writing numbers with the help of our number animal friends. Each number has a story which helps the children to remember what the number looks like. This week we learned about Greedy Zero the Gorilla, Penguin One, Ticklish Two the Swan, Butterfly Three, Feathery Four the Bird and Frisky Five the Kangaroo. The children have loved learning how to write the numbers with the help of the animals!

Other Areas

P1 has also been having lots of fun playing outside in the playground. In P.E we practised listening to instructions by playing games, getting into groups of a particular number and working on our spatial awareness when running around the playground. We also worked on our fitness by warming up and doing a mini fitness routine together.

This week we also did a mini topic all about friendship! We learned why it is important to be a good friend, how we can be a good friend and how we can be kind to people in our class. We also learned about why it is important to have kind hands whilst at school and at home. With a partner we traced our hands and decorated them with lots of lovely feathers and pompoms. This is to remind us that are hands are to be kind to everyone around us. Here are our kind hands.

In outdoor learning this week our art focus was to create a picture using natural resources found in the playground with a partner. Lots of the pairs decided to make a fire, which many of us pretended to roast marshmallows on and warm are hands on. Some pairs also decided to make types of food such as a Pizza. The P1s had lots of fun working with a new friend. In relation to our friendship topic, we also played a fun and exciting pretending/challenge game. Each child was given either an orange or green piece of paper. Each new challenge we had to find someone who had the opposite colour of card to work with. For each challenge the pair had to decide and imagine how they would overcome it. Some of the challenges were, crossing a river, climbing a really tall tree, cooking their favourite food and creating a silly dance. We had lots of fun playing this game!

We have had lots of fun developing our social skills by playing with our peers in the classroom. We have lots of fun drawing pictures and making crafts, playing in the home corner and reading in the book corner. We also have lots of fun building castles and towers with the construction blocks. There is always lots of fun things to do in the classroom to support our learning and play.

Things to Try at Home

We would love it if the P1s could continue to practice their independence skills. These have improved greatly over the week but could still be quicker and smoother. Try and practice: Changing shoes (fastening buckles and Velcro themselves, making sure they are on the right foot), putting on, zipping up jackets (and turning sleeves the correct way round), opening snacks themselves and tidying up after play.

Ask your child to give you X amount of various things. For example sticks, leaves, stones. Whatever you can find. This will help with our counting skills.

Practice recognising their name and practice writing their name with playdough, sand and other natural materials you can find. They could also use these materials to practice writing numbers.

P1 Lion’s Favourite Things of the Week!

“I enjoyed playing outside during P.E.” – Barney

“I enjoyed playing with the bricks. I built a big castle.” – Islay C

“I enjoyed drawing at the craft table.” – Abigail

“I enjoyed learning and playing with the numicon with Barney and Joe.” – Jack

“I enjoyed playing in the house corner.” – Chloe

Happy Weekend!

You should now be able to view your child’s learning targets on the E-Journals, if you are having any problems with this please do not hesitate to get in touch!

Next week Ms Leach will be teaching the class on Monday.

P.E will be on Mondays and Thursdays – please come dressed and ready for P.E.

I hope you have a lovely weekend and I look forward to seeing you on Monday!

P3MB Friday 11.9.20

Hello everyone

This week we have been learning:

NUMERACY

We have been sequencing and ordering numbers to 20, to 100 and some of us have been ordering larger numbers.

In mental maths we have been partitioning numbers, thinking about adding ten more and ten less.

We continued to practise counting in 4s.

Some comments from the children:

‘I’ve learned to count in 3s using the songs on the Smartboard’.

‘I’ve used the posters in the classroom to help me count in 10s.’

‘Number games help me to count in 4s’.

LITERACY

In reading we have been learning to make predictions about what might happen next using our reading books.

We were thinking about using full stops and capital letters correctly and wrote sentences of our own to practise this.

We had a Big Writing assessment where we wrote a personal piece about something we had done after school or at the weekend.

A comment from a member of the class:

‘Morning challenges help me learn my spelling words’.

TARGETS

We talked about targets for literacy, numeracy and health and wellbeing for Term One and wrote our individual star steps.

PE

We continued to work on our fitness and recorded our times on Tuesday and Thursday, trying to beat our own scores.

FRENCH

We practised saying the numbers 1-13 in French and played some games outside to help us learn.

Dear parents

We are trying to assess your child’s reading level so that we can give them a suitable reading book. Although we have information from your child’s previous teacher this may be out of date as the children have missed a whole term of school. Please bear with us as we get to know your child and their reading level. We may mix up groups and try your child on different stages of books.

PE is on Tuesdays and Thursdays. All PE for the foreseeable future will be outdoors. The children are encouraged to come to school on these days dressed in clothing which is suitable for physical outdoor activity.

Have a lovely weekend.

P4H 11.09.20

Another busy week in P4H developing learning skills in a variety of ways.

The children have brought their learning story home for you to look at with the plans and targets for the term to be returned next week..The children chose their own targets

Reading There may be some movement in groups and stages over the coming weeks as I continue to assess where each child is , since the school closures in March. This also means that they have not been given a specific reading day. Hopefully we will get into a regular pattern very soon. Thank you for your cooperation. It would be handy to use the purple reading bags from P3 if possible.

Ms Hastie

Today’s Blog has been written collaboratively…….

P3C Blog – 11/9/2020

Loose Parts

On Monday we were outside exploring with the loose parts in the woodland part of our playground. It was lots of fun! Quotes from the class:

  • “we were building dens – we had to figure out how to keep them solid”
  • “we had fun sliding down the hill on the tyres”
  • “we made pancakes out of sand”
  • “we played with rakes and spades in the sand”

Literacy

We are enjoying our new class novel “Ice Cat” and have been making predictions about what will happen next in the story and how the Ice Cat can move! There have been some very interesting ideas from “Being caused by the moon like with werewolves” to “It’s some sort of magic” and “It could be aliens”! We’re looking forward to finding out!

We have also continued with our group reading books, practising reading with fluency, prediction and answering questions. Please ensure that your child has their reading folder with them every day.

We created characters and wrote about them. We thought about: Who they are, what they are and what makes them special.

For spelling we have been looking at another set of consonant blends, completing a range of activities to win treasure and completed dictation today.

Things to do at home:

  • Make predictions about what you think is going to happen in different books (or TV programmes) at home
  • Ask questions about different books at home
  • Talk about your character and what they could do in a story
  • Choose a way to practise your spelling words

Maths & Numeracy

We have continued to learn about place value, thinking about the value of a digit, putting numbers in order from smallest to largest and more practise working out: 1 more, 1 less, 10 more, 10 less, 100 more, 100 less.

We have been practising doing tally charts and will be working more on converting them into pictograms next week.

Things to do at home:

  • Practise skip counting for the numbers you have set as your target as you are walking or going up or down stairs
  • The maths antics video on Youtube: is helpful for explaining place value
  • Can you think of a survey you could do at home to practise tally charts?

Other Learning

  • PE – Fitness
  • Music – Bog Baby Song (with guitar) / Singing in the Rain
  • Circle Time – Talking about feelings

P6NM Friday 11th September 2020

Good afternoon Everyone.

We have had a great week in P6NM and have been busy setting up our Learning Stories for P6. These have been sent home today so please check school bags! We hope that you enjoy looking over the Newsletter for this term and the targets. Once you have done this, please return the Learning Stories so that we can start to put evidence of learning in.

A few reminders:
  • We are outdoors every afternoon so please remember a jacket!
  • Please label all jumpers/cardigans as we no longer have access to a lost property box.
  • In March, when the school closed we sent home packs of resources. Many of these have been returned, thank you. We are particularly keen to use the smart pals (clear folders which you can slip A4 sheets into) so if you still have these at home could you please send them back in. Thank you!

Here is a summary of our learning this week.

Maths

We have been learning to round numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000.

Here is a poster which is useful to refer to.

We have also been using rounding to estimate an answer to a calculation. For example:

51 + 78 will be roughly 50+80=130

792 – 323 will be roughly 800 – 300 = 500

We also looked at the RUCSAC technique which helps us to solve word problems. Click on the link below to download a poster explaining this method.

RUCSAC POSTER

Opportunities for home learning:
  • Give yourself a budget (e.g. £5) Ask an adult to give you 3 items to search for using supermarket prices online. Find the total cost of 3 items then calculate the change you would receive (if any) from your budget. Make this more difficult by adding more items or changing your budget.
  • Challenge yourself with funny puzzles using your home environment. For example, ‘What is the number of doors in your house multiplied by your favourite number then divided by your age?’.
  • Use Daily 10 on the Top Marks website to practise the concept of rounding. There are different levels so choose the appropriate level of challenge.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/daily10

Literacy

Spelling

Our spelling pattern this week has been soft c.

  • c is soft (saying s) when it comes after e, i, y
  • ce and ci are more commonly used in the middle of words than se and si

Writing

We had two opportunities for story writing this week. The first was an adventure story based on a short text called ‘Mission Possible’ which we read and analysed. The class came up with fantastic character names for the spies and the ‘baddies’ in their stories. I really enjoyed reading them! The second was an imaginative story based on a picture stimulus. The picture had the title ‘Time stood still but for all but one man…’ There were some very imaginative ideas in the stories!

Reading

We are nearing the end of our class novel ‘A Kind of Spark’ and are still really gripped by it. We have had some very in depth discussions about the issues raised in the book.

Opportunities for home learning:
  • Reading homework (please check reading records!)
  • Revise this week’s spelling words by creating your own word search or use this link to get you’re a computer to do it for you:

http://puzzlemaker.discoveryeducation.com/WordSearchSetupForm.asp

Ideas for writing activities related to our class novel:

  • Have you ever felt sorry and wanted to apologise for what you had done but the other person wouldn’t listen or talk to you? Use these ideas to write an apology letter from Nina to Addie to apologise for all the issues/hurt they have both gone through.
  • What advice would you give Addie about how to deal with Miss Murphy? Imagine you’re an agony aunt and Addie has written to you to explain her teacher seems to hate her and mistreats her. What would your reply be?

Other areas of the curriculum:

  • We have been developing our fitness in outdoor PE lessons.
  • We enjoyed working with different partners in outdoor learning activities such as making maths puzzles using natural materials.
  • We enjoyed using the laptops to log into teams with our new passwords.

Have a great weekend,

Mrs McFarlane

P5B Reflective Friday 11.9.20

Good afternoon everyone.

This week in P5 we started our new reading books, we read the first 10 pages and then concentrated on describing what we had found out about the main character. Class reading will be done on a Thursday and then pages will be given to read at home for the following Wednesday.

Our spelling pattern was

  • Learning to add suffix ing / ed with no doubling.
  • Learning more about root words before adding suffix ing / ed

Suffixing Rules:

  • If you have a root word containing long vowel sounds – you just add ing

Here are the words

Magic e                          Long Vowel

phoned                           avoided

escaping                         delayed

thriving                          displayed

driving                           flowing

Here are the children’s reflections and ideas for home learning.

Have a great weekend
