P2 Wonderful Wolves Friday update

This week in P2W…

Literacy: This week we have been learning our soft ‘g’ sound and spelling rule. We also had lots of fun with our Mr Men and Little Miss story writing station this week…lots of creative authors in the making! This week we also were learning about writing lists and we created a list of instructions for washing our hands. In writing this week we focused on using connectives when writing about animals and the reasons we like them.

Numeracy and Maths – This week we continued our learning on place value and partitioning. We have been using our counting blocks to help us represent tens and units and then used these to help us add and subtract large numbers. This week our class had some very specific pizza orders from customers so we used our fraction knowledge to make the pizzas and sent them out for delivery! We also got to play fraction bingo.

Other curricular areas: We were learning about the artist Claude Monet this week and P2W are excited to try and replicate some of his art work in the coming weeks. We also had outdoor loose parts play this week where we got to be very creative…lots of mud pies and dens! To celebrate filling our class pompom jar for our targets of ‘being kind to others, showing good listening and being respectful to resources’ we had a movie morning on Friday. We also created some new targets for the rest of term.

Our new class targets:

Tremendous toilet manners

Cool carpet sitters

Excellent example setters

Ask your child what these involve!

Reading: Next week we will be having a look at some non-fiction books. Your child’s reading book next week will therefore be non-fiction. This will correlate with their Oxford Reading tree stage.

Have a lovely long weekend.

Reading

We continued working on our group readers. We set the chapters to read .

We chose 2 characters and used our detective skills to find words in the text to describe them. We compared them using our skills.

Literacy Evolve Novel Study.

We continued being reading detectives to explore Ottoline and the Yellow Cat”

We had to find clues from the adverts in the text . Then we could work out the suspicious buildings and try to solve the mystery.

Numeracy

We continued to practise division using our knowledge of tables and number fact families.

We began a topic of money and looked at the value of coins. We sorted money into values and added heaps to make totals.

We decided we would start a shop and use the junk boxes to sell. We plan to organise this next week .

Titanic

During Skills time some of us built Lego Titanics. We decided to see if they would float or sink. It has stirred our interest in water and why things float . We are going to investigate this more over the next few weeks

Here are the results

Group 1 (A,W,E)

Groups 2 (I,T) and group 3 (W,H)

ICT

We divided into groups and began to create information posters to display.

They are First class, Second Class, Third Class , the Captain and crew , icebergs and the shipbuilders. We searched the internet for information and photos to help us We were doing historical research and discovered some amazing facts which we did not know. We used our reading and comprehension skills alongside computer skills to find information. We printed out some photos . Next we will combine all our research to make information posters,

Here we are working together …..

What we have been learning this week – 21.5.21

Happy Friday P5M!

Literacy

In reading this week, we have been learning about the circulatory system and the nervous system for our Human Body topic. We practised taking notes in our own words from a passage and from videos. We then used the information that we had gathered to create information posters.

For persuasive writing this week we moved on to learning how to write persuasive letters. We wrote letters to Mrs Imrie trying to persuade her to get recycling bins in to the school. The skills that we were focusing on were; using emotive language, repeating our point and exaggerating our point by using WOW words.

Things to do at home –

See the progress record for this week’s reading pages. Practise the different reading skills that we have focused on in class such as: creating and answering your own questions, pick an important part of the book and illustrate it, write a short paragraph about why it is an important part of the book or use a dictionary to find the meaning of any unknown words.

Spelling words will be posted on Tuesday – practise writing them out in the air with your finger and trying to use them in sentences.

Have a look at TV adverts and try to identify if they use any of the techniques that we have been learning about in class.

Maths and Numeracy

This week in numeracy we have continued with our topic of time. We have been practising converting 12-hour time into 24-hour time by adding 12 to the hour. We also looked at different timetables while learning how to calculate the duration of time. To work this out we have been using an empty number line. We will continue this next week.

Things to do at home –

Practise your problem solving – https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/7-11-years/problem-solving

Log on to Sumdog and try to complete this week’s challenge ‘Master Maths’ before it ends next Friday.

Look at any timetables you come across (bus, train, etc.) and try to calculate how long it takes to get to where you are going.

Other curricular areas

  • For our Human Body topic, we have been learning about how the circulatory system works. We discussed how the heart transports blood around the body and we carried out a mini experiment where we took our heart rate before exercise, straight after, and then every minute afterwards for 4 minutes. This helped us to see how our heart speeds up when we are active and how quickly it will return to normal.
  • We also learned about the sensory system, focusing on how our nerves send messages to and from the brain. We created great pieces of art showing the different parts of the brain and our nerves.

Enjoy the bank holiday weekend!

Reflective Friday 21.05.21

Happy Friday P1L!

You have all worked really hard this week! Well done!

Here is what we have been up to:

Literacy

In literacy this week we have learned three new sounds – ‘nd’ ‘nt’ and ‘mp’. We enjoyed thinking of words which have the sounds in them, looking for words in our reading books and drawing pictures of words which have the sounds in them. We also enjoyed writing words with these sounds in sentences, reading texts and highlighting the new sounds and playing games! We also continued to learn and look at the Block 3 tricky words. This week we focussed on ‘kind’ and ‘find’. Please continue to practice your tricky words at home and our new sounds each week. Please practice learning how to read, write and use the tricky words at home! (Block 1-Block 3)

For reading, we each got a new ORT book and we predicted what we thought was going to happen in the story before reading, we had word hunts and we read both individually and with a partner. We also practised our comprehension skills by completing a fill in the missing word activity sheet. We enjoyed the extra challenge of reading our book backwards this week! Reading books will be sent home on a Thursday and to be returned to school on a Monday! Tuesday next week. Please feel free to write any comments in your child’s reading diary!

In writing this week we wrote a story using ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ as a stimulus. Our writing task was to continue the story as the butterfly and think about what they might like to eat. We planned our stories by thinking about who our butterfly was (what did they look like etc), where our story was going to take place and what did they eat. We then wrote our stories, reminding ourselves to use our non-negotiables and designed beautiful drawings of our butterflies!

Things to try at home;

  • Practice reading your reading book which is sent home! Read the book forwards and backwards, ask your child questions about the story, the characters etc. You could extend the learning of the book and ask your child to write the next part of the story.
  • Revise our new sounds and tricky words! Can you read them and write them?
  • Write a story about your weekend! Can you add lots of detailed language?
  • Recognise and use our non-negotiables in everything you write!

Numeracy

In numeracy this week we practised our counting skills and recognising numbers up to 100. We also looked at 100 squares and noticing patterns on them. We counted screened and unscreened collections together and also practised making equal groups. We also practiced thinking of other ways to make numbers on our fingers, sequencing numerals and identifying numbers up to 100.

We also had a look at the Early Level Benchmarks and revised our learning of numeracy we have done throughout the year.

We also started our Data Handling maths topic and learned how to make tally marks to record information. We also learned how to make pictograms and bar charts to show the information we had gathered when taking the tally marks.

Things to try at home:

  • Practice counting to 100.
  • Can you notice numbers in your local environment? On buses, houses or outdoors? What number comes before or after the one you see? What is 10 more than that number?
  • Practice counting items or groups of items in your house. Can you make tally marks to show how many you have?

Other Curricular Areas

P.E: We enjoyed practising our athletic skills and learning how to use our arms and looking where we are going to help us run faster.

French: We have been learning how to count to 10 in french and basic greetings. We also have been learning the days of the week and how to say ‘Today it is..’ We also learned how to say what we are feeling in French.

Topic: This week we talked about where our food comes from and if it comes from a plant or an animal. We also spoke about our favourite foods and where we thought they came from.

Outdoor Learning: We had lots of fun playing with the outdoor loose parts and exploring building and making things together!

Photos of the Week:

P1L’s Highlights of the Week:

Jack – I enjoyed loose parts outdoors.

Joe – I liked the loose parts messy play.

Barney – I liked doing maths this week.

Next Week:

  • Enjoy the Monday holiday!
  • P.E will be on Thursday.
  • Please bring appropriate outdoor clothing as we will have one outdoor lesson per day.
  • Please return your reading folder (book and reading diary inside the folder please!) on Tuesday!

I hope you have a lovely weekend!

P2/3 Golden Treasures Reflective Friday week beginning 17th May 2021

Please remember that Monday is a holiday next week! We hope that you enjoy the long weekend.

Literacy

  • Spelling: this week we practised our spelling words using Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check; we also did a carousel of activities to practise our spellings: pastels, making them from wool, making our own wordsearches and tricky word highlighting.
  • Team Jewel- continuing our work on ‘oy’
  • Team Gold– continuing our work on adding ‘ing’ endings to words where you don’t need to make any changes to the root word.
  • Team Treasure- plurals where the root word doesn’t change.
  • Reading- skimming and scanning in our reading books to find words with our spelling sounds; reading for information about plants.
  • Handwriting– practising formation, focusing on the correct height of letters, beginning joining.
  • Writing- writing a story.

At home ideas:

  • Try to add some extra words to your group’s spelling list that follow the same rule.
  • Keep reading for pleasure, can you read for 20 minutes every day?

Numeracy/Maths

  • Continuing our work on fractions. We revised how to find half of a shape and half of a number and moved on to looking at quarters. We talked about the meaning of the word fraction and how it’s super important to remember that it’s an EQUAL part.
  • We talked about the numerator and denominator in a fraction (don’t worry about remembering these long words though!)
  • Focusing on our counting in 3s and linking this to the 3 x table.
  • Continuing to work on measure: weight, capacity and measuring in cm.

At home ideas:

  • Fractions: draw some shapes on paper and cut them out. Can you find any shapes that you can fold into quarters? (Hint: you could try halving a shape and then halving it again)
  • Listen to and join in with these counting in 3s songs

Other Areas

  • IDL/Topic- learning a bit more about what plants need to grow, making posters and planting our own sunflower seeds which we plan to look after really well.
  • PE- sports day stations
  • Starting to plan for our class assembly, which is all about our learning during Health Week.

At home ideas:

  • Have a look at plants around your house, garden or in your neighbourhood. Do you know the names of any of them? What are the similarities and differences between the different plants that you see?
  • Set up your own sports day stations for family and friends to enjoy. Be creative with the equipment that you have in your house!

Have a super weekend!

Reflective Friday WB 17.5.21

Primary 4WL well done for a busy and successful week of learning! We have enjoyed lots of different opportunities across the curriculum and finding out more about our topic, Titanic.

Here is a summary of our learning across the week:

Literacy

We have been learning to-

Spell words with a ‘wr’ pattern correctly

Use accurate spelling of ‘wr’ words within a context

Share our class novel, thoughts and opinions

Review our class novel by writing a book review

Recap our understanding of our reading by answering different questions in our class novel, reading group books and texts in class

Look for information in a text and share where we can find the information using the layout and organisation of the text for example the title and an index

Find out about what a letter is, what it looks like and how it is structured and organised

Look at examples of letters and write our own examples of a letter, using the correct layout and languages

Write and redraft a good copy of a letter, using self-checking skills and careful presentation

Work cooperatively with our new table groups and new learning pairs on challenges

Use correct spelling and word contexts to fill passages (cloze procedure)

Look carefully at a glossary text and answer different questions about it

Next week our Spelling rule will be-
L.I. We are learning to spell words with a silent ‘k’ pattern.
Over the years the pronounciation of words has changed and some letters appear in the spelling of words which are no longer sounded:
Silent ‘k’ followed by ‘n’ – kn
Word List (there will be additional ones and set as Super/Fantastic next week but these can get you started!):
knee knight knot knead knew knowledge knives kneeling knitting knocked
Tricky Words
know no

P1 Tigers Reflective Friday 21.5.21

.

It has been lovely to welcome a new pupil to the class this week. Please say a (socially distanced, of course) hello to her and her family if you see them in the playground.

Literacy

Spelling

Our new sounds this week have been the blends nt, nd and mp found at the end of words and our new tricky words many and water. You can find the home learning sheet below. Please continue to work at home to consolidate the learning of the new sounds and using them to build and write words.

The word my is not one of our tricky words, but lots of us do find it a little confusing. Please learn to spell the word my if you don’t already know it. It is a useful word to know as we often use it in our writing.

Writing

We went to the woods and found a stick to be a magic wand. We decorated them and then wrote about them. In our writing we described our magic wands and then wrote about what they can do and what magic words we might use. We all have amazing imaginations !

.

Reading

Thank you for your continued support with reading at home. The children work hard in school all week so that when they bring the book home they feel confident to showcase what they have learned.

We continue to work in school on developing our reading skills. As well as reading the words and learning new vocabulary we predict, discuss and comprehend. We hope you enjoy sharing the books with your children at the weekend. If you feel perhaps that they have memorised the book ( which is part of the learning process) then you could ask them to read the book backwards, starting with the last word. Of course this makes no sense , but the children do find it funny and it helps the adults to see if the child can read the words with little context. We use this technique in class so the children are familiar with the idea.

Please note that we cannot send reading books home on Thursday unless your child has their purple folder with them, and we would respectfully request that the children do not carry their water bottles in the purple bags – we have already had one soggy reading book!

Numeracy/Maths

We continue to work on our numeracy skills, consolidating counting forwards and back, numeral recognition and addition strategies.

Other areas of the curriculum

We are learning about the life cycle of caterpillars and tadpoles. We enjoy watching them closely each day to see how they are changing and growing.

Here are some photographs of us enjoying our independent learning opportunities this week. Please ask us what we were doing.

Things to try at home

Practise knowing the order of the days of the week – focusing on the day BEFORE

Play this telling the time game.

Look around the house for all the clocks you can find. How many are digital clocks? How many are analogue ( with hands) ?

Count backwards from 30 to 10 ( or 100 – 30)

Write all your numbers from 1-9. Are they all the right way round? If not, can you practise them.

Practise spelling all the tricky words so far – how many can you write from memory ?

Be Geraldine……. ” Off she went around the house to find something ENDing with nt/mp/nd etc ” How many things can you find? You could make a list of all the things you find.

Practise your letter formation – are there any letters you find tricky to write ?

Learn to spell and write your surname.
